The Super Mario Cereal caused quite a stir when it hit supermarket shelves not so long ago, and not just for its nutritional value (or lack thereof) - it was the fact that the box actually came with an amiibo tag that could be used in games.
This aspect made the cereal incredibly collectable, but it seems that all good things must come to an end. The cereal is still going to be sold, but it has been reissued in a new box which lacks that coveted NFC functionality.
Here's what the original version looks like, for reference:
The new version of the cereal is already making its way into stores, but it has a different box design so you can tell them apart. If you're still on the hunt for that amiibo-powered packaging, be careful which one you get. You might also want to act quickly, because once the original variant is gone, we may not see it again.

Did this ever hit the UK?
I skipped breakfast
If it did hit the UK, never made it my little island
I didn't expect much when I got a box for the amiibo but I was pleasantly surprised to find it actually tasted good. I'm guessing Nintendo got enough of a positive response to keep it around. Maybe we'll see some more stuff like this in the future. I can see them doing cereal themed around Zelda or even Kirby.
The box's amiibo functionality was pretty much useless anyway.
But why wouldn't one want NFC cereal?!
I already have a box. The cereal's OK, and I kept the box because I collect amiibo.
I could never find it in my state 😧
Don't do it. The cereal tastes awful. Even my kids rejected it, they didn't even want to eat the marshmallows lol.
@MegaMari0 Which state? haha
@redd214 lol Most American cereals are chemical
@mr12calvin yeah I know we don't get cereal very often so it's kind of a treat when we do.
Man, I dont think any company compares to Nintendo when it comes to getting the most mileage out of their art and character assets.
I'm 99% sure Mario's pose on the new cereal print already exist, and they just shopped a spoon into his hand.
Gotta see if I can import it to Australia. The choice of kids cereal here is crap, it's practically the same boring garbage for decades. I buy all the good stuff from the US (Lucky Charms, Fruity Pebbles, Cinnabon, Apple Jacks, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, etc...)
"Naturally flavored with other natural flavors" - what does that even mean? Doesn't sound that natural to me...
@mr12calvin Maryland.
It has a vague "berry" flavor in the crunchy bits, but the marshmallows are no different from Lucky Charms. Honestly, its the first junk food cereal I've had in almost a decade. Somewhere along the way, I slowly shifted my attention away from "A prize in every box!" over to "No added sugars"
Gettin old, I guess...
There’s no longer a reason to buy the cereal anymore.
I have a whole stockpile of the amiibos. I cut them out, given away a couple to friends as well.
If it cost the same then why would you want it without the amiibo?
@Scrummer well I guess if you take the tag you can make any old figurine a working amiibo.
Glad the cereal is staying around longer. It's my new favorite marshmallow based cereal since they discontinued Kaboom and removed marshmallows from AlphaBits (dislike the taste of Lucky Charms). They don't stock it in my neighborhood so I have to go the extra distance for a few boxes.
The Cereal's amiibo matters little to me since I already use my large amiibo collection for in-game features. I have 2 on the side so far just to give away.
Instead of a piece of plastic tat in the box there's now codes to scan with your console.
Truly future has arrived.
@riChchestM Nope and not likely to as Kellogg's will be altering their UK cereals this summer to be less sugary. Ricicles have been axed already.
Is this cereal canon?
This was tasty, but the NFC tag was just a sticker. Doesn't seem like a big deal to keep it in there.
