The Japanese chart data is in, and it's a mixed bag of highs and lows for Nintendo this week. Splatoon 2, having hit the two million sales mark last week, crept into the top three behind PS4 remake Secret Of Mana and the ever powerful Monster Hunter World.
However, the Switch port of Bayonetta 2 and the Ultimate Climax Edition (the game's fancy and enviable special edition in Japan) failed to make the top 10 debuting at 14 and 13 respectively. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe holds onto sixth place, but Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle drops from seventh to 10th. In fact, slots 11 to 20 are dominated by Nintendo-based software.

I was close to picking up Bayonetta, but as someone with kids, I just haven't been able to get comfortable with the idea of openly playing it. So it's a pass for me.
Dreadful debut for Bayonetta 2, it didn't even boost hardware sales. I suppose you can say it's ~21,000 combined. That's still not great. According to 4Gamer, the Wii U exclusive sold 38,828 units in its first week on sale in Japan, nearly double that of on Switch.

I remember it got slated for poor sales on Wii U. What will people say now about it on Switch? And despite its high placing in the UK chart, its actual sales were worse than its Wii U debut there also.
Secret of Mana Remake is another game with poor debut sales this week. I loved that game on SNES. I was watching some video the other day, it may have been Digital Foundry, but anyway they said that Square Enix cheaped out on its Remake.
It's disgusting to see turds like 1,2 Switch nearly at 400,000 copies sold in Japan alone while quality games won't reach that target worldwide, never mind just in Japan.
And the headline should be about Bayonetta 2, not Splatoon 2.
It always pleases me to see Splatoon to continue to do so well. No game on the Switch deserves it more.
They don't seem to like Bayonetta in Japan any more. The original sold ok, but the second sold quite poorly on Wii U as well - only 38k in week 1 (still up on Switch).
If you add the sales from both versions Bayonetta would be 6th, climax and standard are listed seperate
Monster Hunter World still completing destroying the competition and probably will continue until Nintendo Labo launches.
I am interested to see how long Monster Hunter’s legs will be. In the past they were huge when on the 3DS. A drop in over 18,000 PS4s suggests I see it heading back into second place in a few weeks time.
One thing is for sure, you can never underestimate the franchise in its home turf. If I Nintendo I would be cosying up with Capcom to bring an exclusive MH title to the Switch. Sony’s “loss” of the franchise to Nintendo and the 3DS was a major blow to the Vita.
Must say also surprised and glad Breath of the Wild continues to do respectably well.
Competition is good.
I’m playing Bayonetta right now on Switch & still can’t believe it’s a ‘Nintendo’ game.
Guess Japan doesn’t buy it as one either.
It is about as M rated as it gets 😂.
I love it though. Made me stop playing MH World for the time being.
Yes. And that's an easy one. I'm in the US but I am buying bayonet on digital, because the band that a cart does not include both games, if it included both games actually on the card I would be buying it physical.
Just a little bit more, Nintendo.
Keep kick PS4 butt !
@FX102A I think Worlds has shown Capcom that there is more money in releasing the games on both PS4 and Xbox One alone then there would ever be just on the Switch.
@Grumblevolcano That's a lot of faith in Labo. I just can't see it being this massive thing everyone seems to say it will be.
@Reignmaker Kids go to bed. Handheld mode. #switchlife
Unfortunate debut for Bayonetta. At least the UK had a decent one. I’m curios as to how well it performed in the U.S. Both games have currently been in the top 3-10 eshop charts all week
Ouch... For Bayonetta - Hopefully the west will pick up the slack. I'll pick up Secret of Mana once it hits 19.99 on VITA.
@FragRed I think it has more of a chance than the other Spring Switch games.
@FragRed
Really ?
I think LABO will sell quite a lot for peoples who loves Art and something Kawaii (Cute).
Remember, the audiences of gaming world are NOT just Only Adult male gamers with typical games every year every machines (Fifa, NBA, Madden, etc)
What are the differences in the versions that the chart decided to separate the Bayonetta sales?
Here's my take on the Bayonetta sales. The Wii U, while underwhelming worldwide, did rather better in its home market of Japan than elsewhere, so there is a bigger pool of Switch owners who have moved on from the Wii U and so might have already played Bayonetta 2. Thus the slightly low-key debut in the charts this week.
I know you can apply the same argument to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which has sold ridiculously well for a Wii U port, but Mario Kart is an open-ended party game, rather than a mainly single-player story-led campaign.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE while I agree that the Bayonetta sales aren’t great if you combine the two numbers it would have been in the top 5 so those numbers also aren’t terrible.
@Agramonte Shouldn’t take too long. The Vita version is cheaper than its PS4 counterpart. I paid £25 at launch.
Pretty mediocre Bayo 2 Switch sales.
@Fight_Teza_Fight yeah - it is 29.99 in the States. I have the $79 Ninokuni2 on pre-order next month - so reaaaaaaly can't spend the cash right now.
I also know I probably wont really play it - I just want it (like Okami on PC).
Digital sales for Bayo are likely higher than they were on Wii U. Also, I think I read somewhere that the standard edition of Bayonetta 2 doesn't include Bayonetta 1 in Japan.
@Krull yep, you can play MK over and over. It is also kid friendly.
Bayonetta is selling at expected numbers. And seriously why would anyone expect bayonetta 1 & 2 to be a system seller.
It's bayonetta people. Series has never been a system seller
@Nico87 Yep, that's what I do with Doom. Still, something different more about Bayonetta. This sums it up nicely, though maybe it's more of an argument to go ahead and get it: https://www.google.com/amp/s/motherboard.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/mb5pvv/the-nintendo-switch-is-great-for-playing-games-youre-ashamed-of
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think on the Secret of mana remake especially with the bad press i've seen about it I think that I'd rather see a localization of the trilogy instead, but doesn't seem like that is happening either.
It should be noted that both Mario Kart 8 DX and Pokken Tournament DX sold less than the Wii U original versions at launch, but ended up outselling them in the end due to the Switch's rapidly growing install base. I wouldn't be surprised if Bayonetta 2 on Switch did the same, though on a smaller scale.
Seems like the Monster Hunter World effect on PS4 is beginning to fade away.
Also,it's funny that Shadow of the Colossus sold about the same at launch as Bayonetta 2 on Switch, but no "doom 'n gloom"...
Wow, yet again the Nintendo execs that message on here are giving us their 'inside information' that something has failed or not based on week 1 sales in Japan! What were people expecting Bayo to do? How many ports/remakes etc, especially single player focused games, do better when comparing first week of sales. Look at the recent Shadow of the Colossus, Okami sales, even PS4 The Last of Us sold a quarter of what it did on PS3 first week in Japan, which given the release timeframes is about as fair a comparison with Bayo as I can think of.
I mean, what... about 60% physical sales ratio on a userbase a touch more than Wii U seems reasonable to me, I also imagine digital sales will be up over Wii U adding more to that initial number.
Lest we forget we are very early in the Switch life cycle so plenty more potential buyers, not to mention Bayo 3 will act as a sales driver automatically nearer release, especially with the inevitable promotions that will be on Bayo 1 & 2 at that time.
A little bit of perspective would be nice from time to time on these comment boards.
@Aaron09
Bayonetta is currently #1 on US eshop and Bayonetta 2 is #3, at least as of last night. Game deserves to do better though.
@FragRed
World has done very well, but Nintendo MH sales still dominate sales of any other single platform, and that's with super low budget entries.
Release a high budget, AAA MH on Switch and you'll see sales surpass either the PS4 or X1, and probably come close to topping both combined.
Now, I wouldn't say that's possible quite yet- Switch is still building up it's install base after all. But by the time the next game is ready for release, if it were to come to all platforms, I would be in shock and awe if Switch version didn't outperform every other version.
That's not to say there's no money to be made on other platforms- clearly there is. But let's not neglect the fact it would make just as much if not more on the Switch. And with that in mind, no platform should be left out going forward. There's money to be made all around, and gamers want to play the game series all around.
Again, it's 6th if you combine the two. So it did make the top 10, not a smash hit but not bad considering what's ahead of it
Nice to see the ps vita has two games in the top ten. Still my most favourite console off all time.
Even if i spend more time Switch nowadays.
When you play these games it all depends on your point of view. I liked the bayonetta games. I even liked her in smash bros. not every game will sell games so fast. it will take time and japan and uk are not the only regions in the world.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE we really should reserve judgment until the us numbers are out.
Nintendo needs a couple big games to release for the Switch right now, hope something is coming soon or sales will stall a bit ,you gotta strike the iron while its hot Nintendo .
ARMS is still survivin'!
@BenAV Zelda Breath of the wild, Mario odyssey and Splatoon 2, In this order deserve all the love.
Dang fighterz fell off a cliff.
Genuinely surprised Bayonetta 2 isn't doing better. But I guess there will be a small percentage of people who will just never pick it up. I'm one of those people, having already bought it on Wii U. I'm waiting for Bayonetta 3 though!
Still have the Wii U bundle, but I bought them both again for the Switch. The first game is number one on the uk eshop so presumably people are using the codes from buying bayo 2, I think it's selling well enough for a port.
@0muros Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 then Breath of the Wild for me. Super Mario Odyssey was a little disappointing compared to my expectations so I don't have that on the same level.
@westman98 Yeah. Also, I doubt Nintendo was expecting huge sales in Japan. In the end Nintendo determines what is dreadful, not people on Nintendolife... It is a port of a 3.5 year old game at full price after all.
Bayonetta also 1&2 did not get any TV advertising in Japan, only web advertising.. so I think it should sell over time. I would be surprised if it did not sell the same or more than the WiiU version of Bayonetta 2 in Japan.
@roboshort
The Climax Edition for Bayo 2 sold out like a month prior to the game's release. That probably didn't help either.
Can't be helped, the Switch simply hasn't really had any big releases this year. Nintendo needs to get back on their game of this drought is gonna hurt them.
Yes I know we've had lots or good ports and indie titles, but like it or not, those don't really push the sales numbers that the big name titles do.
@BenAV Oh yes I forgot about Xenoblade 2. Its clearly on the list too. The lack about Splatoon 2 is that almost an online only game. Its why Zelda and Mario are better from my point of view. Im more a solitary person. I need to try Xenoblade because of that.
