It's always the way with as yet unannounced videogames. A leaked slide here, an official dismissal there, and all the while a toy maker reveals its working on a toy line for said new game. Of course, at this stage in the familiar cycle we don't if we really are getting a new entry in the Sonic All-Stars karting series, but the evidence is starting to look convincing.
There's already been that leaked internal slide from developer Sumo Digital, stating it's working on an, "unannounced karting game," based on an, "established global IP." Then there's the toy maker and distributor Zappies, which claimed that a new Sonic karting game is in development and that its working on a new toy line to tie in with it.
SEGA has quashed the rumours, with community manager Aaron Webber stating a new Sonic karting game is, "not a thing," but at this stage we wouldn't be surprised if another entry raced into view. We loved the last entry - Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed - on Wii U, and even gave it a 9/10, so we're well up for a new take on the genre.
But what do you think? Share your thoughts with us below...

Old news at this point. Still, I'd be interested in seeing another one. Those games are fun.
Kinda sounds like we're not...
Weird. .
Absolutely loved the other 2. Put way more time in to them than Mario kart as I loved the arcade style.
"another SART game"
So, not ruling out another SAR game then?
Isn’t this title a little click baity? Or is it just me?
Still say Transformed was better than Mario Kart 8, so I would love another Sonic racing game.
There is absolutely room for two karting games on the Switch and they would cater to people of different tastes. I rented the first one a long time ago and loved playing through it unlocking all of my favorite Sega characters and taking in the excellent music, a new one on Switch is a fantastic idea.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on Wii U was great, very underappreciated. It got overshadowed by MK8. One of the cool features of S&ASRT on Wii U in 2 player mode was player 1 playing on the TV while player 2 had their own screen on the gamepad. Sadly, not enough games made use of this.
Not the best games, but still fun. I prefer Mario Kart 8 way more though.
I'd love another Kart racing game
"Sonic Boom Racing" Sonic Boom is the right audience for a bad racing game along the lines of Madagascar.
It would be a good time for a new Sonic karting game, last one got good reviews, Sony seems to have abandoned the genre after Mod Nation Racers and w/ MK8D just released we probably have a couple of years before MK9. Might as well fill the gap.
"Tails & Friends Karting" has a nice ring to it.
Personally I'm just happy NL got an article, first after about 10 today, that's about a potential retail non-indie non-retro game for Switch. The last one before now was about Mario's nipples.
Fun MK alternative, in fact, I may have to hook up my Wii U downstairs again just to play some more SART with me pallies. Gee, thanks NL.
So, the news is that there actually isn't one? I see you've already mastered the art of clickbait
Hm....
Not a fan of Sonic franchises.
Up until Nintendo released the 200cc DLC I thought Sonic Racing was more fun. My wife and I played it a ton.
I'd buy this for sure.
I hope so
@Aaron09 indeed - as it Also "Sounds Like We Might Not Be Getting A New Sonic & All-Stars Racing Game Soon".
@Aaron09 "Rumours Surrounding New Sonic Racing Game Shot Down" would have been a far more appropriate title.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I agree it was underappreciated. I want to see more of the same in the rumored sequel. Just bump it to 60fps and it'll truly be as good as Mario Kart 8.
If that's true I will be happy, because I love these games. I hope it will have even more Sega lore, characters and stuff, although I also know it will come with DLC, as previous entries did (and I didn't buy the DLC of the first one because it was -and still is- expensive, more than 6 euros for one character and one track!).
I love both games and I would welcome a third. If Sega is not making it though then they just turn away a golden opportunity.
Love this
I remember these being fun on the PS3. Hope this pans out, Switch needs more solid racing games
@Anti-Matter What Sonic "franchises" have you played? There's the 2D games like Mania, 3D games like Forces and spin-offs like Sonic All-Stars Racing. I'd be curious to know which you've actually played.
I only played the demo of transformed on Wii u at launch, But it seemed like a real quality Kart racer. And that Panzer Dragoon track was Gorgeous. Forgot about it up until now, and now I think I want it.
Looking at the Sumo slides, I don't think they're working on another Sonic All-Star Racing game. It says it's an "original development" which points to something else. And regarding Zappies, it's very possible that a new Sonic All-Star Racing game is in development but it may not be what Sega are hinting at showing next month. It's kind of a misleading headline and story.
I enjoyed the first two game. I know this is wishful thinking but it would funny to have AoSTH characters like Dr. Robotnik, Grounder, Scratch, Coconuts as playable characters if SEGA do a third game.
I liked SART, but the menus felt like ass.
Yes please! Those are some good Kart games
It's obviously going to be DPART - Danica Patrick All-star Racing Transformed!
We all know that she was the real hero of the last game, who needs Sonic anyway? We also need Danica Forces and Danica Mania so hurry up Sega!
Whenever I read MK8, I read Mortal Kombat. That would make an hilarious kart racer!
I loved these games. A good solid alternative to Mario Kart. Played Transformed for hours on end on PS3.
Sadly I somehow doubt we're getting another one any time soon though.
Webber can't fool us now! Anyway, hoping this new one is even better than Transformed
While I’d prefer a new Diddy Kong Racing as the Mario Kart alternative on Switch, I’d be happy if this was true as well.
Interesting. I have it on PC. I love Nights stage. I also like Golden Axe and Panzer Dragon stages. I miss a Green Hill stage. I wanted a port of that game for Switch, I'll look forward to this new game for sure. I hope it will still have at least Nights and Golden Axe stages and they could add Green Hill maybe? I hope it will support Miis too!
I never bought the sonic racing games. Cause they where good but not a shadow on Mario Kart. Nintendo have set the bar so high with MK8 deluxe. And the switch version does not look like a 2014 Wii U game anymore. I wait for review scores and if it comes even close to MK8 deluxe i will buy.
With those initials let's hope we don't get a 'Sonic Heroes: All-Stars Racing Transformed' game.
The headline speculates that we're getting a SART for Switch, but the only source cited says we're not. Why, Dom, why?
Such a tease because I'd like a SART. While it was no MK8 (I know, there a a few who think otherwise and good for them), SART was a decent bridge to MK8 for kart racing fans.
@Yorumi I agree more or less. Items were much better and the tracks were just so cool and inspired. (And Jet Set Radio.....mmmm..) And the single player branching path map made it really interesting versus linear circuits.
OTOH, what made it cool also made it a worse "racer." I think in a lot of ways SART embodies what Kart embodied years ago: silly, crazy, unrealistic crazy bumper cars racing. MK on the other hand seems to have evolved, it's no longer just a kart racer for silly casual racing and has become something of a crossover between kart mayhem and an actual serious racer. As such it DEFINITELY has much tighter controls and handling, tighter, more manageable tracks, and overall more "cred" as a legit racer while remain zany enough to not be up against serious racers. Which is probably a perfect balance even if it's more "boring" in order to remain more competitive, and maintains a better online as a result.
Then again, I prefer NFS: Rivals, Payback, and The Crew, horrid, horrid physics and handling and all, to Forza and GT and Project Cars, so SART's "not really a racer" fills my tastes more.
I loved "Transformed". Bring it on, SEGA.
@Shellcore There's already a Mortal Kombat kart racing game, it's called Motor Kombat and it came free within Mortal Kombat Armageddon. It's not as fun as Mario Kart though.
Can we not? It’s too similar to Mario Kart, we need some more variety from the racing genre. I wish they’d bring back Riders instead, that series has a lot more potential than Totally Not Sonic Kart.
I thoroughly enjoyed both entries, especially Transformed because the Air, Land, and Sea sequences were just so vastly different from each other, yet worked so well. Plus, each character truly felt unique. If it wasn't for the fact that Mario Kart turned out to be a better game, I'd still be playing it. Also, I think I stopped playing because it tended to crash a bit. Great game, otherwise.
@Yorumi
The racing was better
Disagree
, the items were better,
Disagree
the creativity in the tracks was better
Disagree
and the single player was better
Agree
I also like the additional goals like the boss battles and enjoyed two-player on two screens with Wii U game pad.
All said I’d very much look forward to a new one, or just a new racing game made by the same team. Not wild about the array of racing characters/vehicles in that one, really so something more cohesive could be great.
@rjejr Don't forget Garfield Kart.
@youkoaoshi i think that's my ONLY real gripe, too. underappreciated, and the 30fps and occasional lag made it ultimately become overshadowed by the much more powerful MK8. I think SART was just ahead of its time tbh
Had enough racing games with Sonic in a car, give us Sonic R done by the Mania team... then we be in for something awesome!
I'll take it, but can we get Earthworm Jim in the roster?
I’ve been hoping for a port or sequel for Transforned as I never owned a Wii U.
@Matthew010
Eh...
Actually i have never played any Sonic games.
But i have ever watch the gameplay from Youtube or directly from other player.
Hehe... sorry.
But, Sonic Amiibo for Mario Kart 8 is really temptating me.
Just look at that Blue helmet and outfits for my Mii.
Figures you’d changed your headline or remove it completely.
@Yorumi
Agreed on all counts.
Only thing that wasn't better... was the performance. I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to frame rates, but that game played like a flip book when the environments changed.
@samuelvictor I'd bite on getting paid to play video games but I suspect you already have more unlocks than I do as it is
Controls on SART can get a little sloppy at times compared to MK8. That's the one place it still needs work. The physics aren't quite there yet. Also the Monkey Ball stage can die in a hole. But yeah I think I spent more time with it than Kart on WiiU as well....it was a very surprise hit for me (Admittedly Kart hooked me on Switch in a way it didn't on WiiU.)
@Anti-Matter If you've watched newer Sonic games....there's not much to enjoy there. Except Generations which was pretty good. Sonic fans, core Sonic fans, miss the old 16 bit games, and Sonic Adventures. When SART is the best Sonic game in a decade.....that says it all Mania on Switch (digital only....even if you bought the physical collectors edition with the statue, sadly ) is as worthy an entry to classic sonic as you'll find. Or the 3DS 3D Classics.
I really don't see the point with Mario Kart 8 on the console but okay, whatever.
@Yorumi All good points on items. I agree with all of it. Except maybe missing item blocks. I think that's an intentional design choice to make those blocks so critical they create choke points (and stupid errors.) So I can't fault that one. But yeah, it has the core driving better than SART, while SART has better tracks and better items. BUT its item placement isn't so great either.
@JayZ why have Project Cars on the same console as GT Sport or Forza 7? Why have The Crew and NFS on the same console? Why have SFV and Tekken 7 on the same console? The subtle differences in racing and fighting games make the game.
The last was far better than Mario Kart, so I'd love another one to play. Hopefully with even more retro Sega characters in it!
Lets be better journalists. The site is Nintendo Life, not lets behave like children with clickbate life. The headline is completely the opposite to what Sega say in your article.
I hate clickbait...
@rjejr None of these will ever stand a chance to the upcoming Hello Kitty kart racing port.
@AlexOlney Sonic R Remake confirmed!
He said it's not a Transformed game, so it's probably just your basic karting title, but with Sonic and friends. Or they changed the name.
I'd like to see another Sonic racing game, it's nice to have more than just Mario Kart to choose from and transformed really changed things up with the different vehicles.
This article also has me craving a new Diddy Kong Racing game.
Also, what about Snowboard Kids? Pull off stunts with the joy-cons?
I would be far more likely to buy a new Sonic racing game than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe since I played it to death on Wii U. Stinks they are denyong the rumors but hopefully something will come out of this. Loved the first Sonic Racing game myself. I am thinking there was a sequel but I can't remember.
@Dpishere I wholeheartedly agree my main man!
@Anti-Matter
I’d say Sonic Mania is up there with the best games of last year.
Definitely play it if you can.
@Dpullam Nice to see another awesome individual on here! And yes the sequel was called Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Transformed I believe.
@XenoShaun @NIN10DOXD Maybe they are making a Kat Kart racer with Hello Kitty, Garfield and Grumpy Cat?
I know what would be good, a Bloom County Kart game. So ahead of its time.
While I wouldn’t mind the new Sonic racing entry at all, I’d much rather see Sumo do a new Outrun!!! The last one was so beautiful!!! Cmon Sega!!
@Dpishere Ah yes. Now I remember. Was that one well received?
@Dpullam Yes it was, people loved it on the Wii U.
Excellent. I honestly wouldn't mind a remake of Sonic Racing transformed then. With better visuals and fps. Maybe a couple additional characters and maps.
"we don't <know> if we really are"
Dom, you had ONE JOB!
I just want Sonic in Mario Kart, but he doesn't drive, just just runs.
I loved Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed so much that I dreamt about it even when I already had the game. I need a sequel.
@justin233 Just because we got XBox Characters like BANJO in Minecraft doesn't mean that Rare is ready to develop games for Nintendo again, starting with an HD Remaster of DIddy Kong Racing for the Switch with even Taj and Wizpig playable, with Wizpig's Original Voice evilly going "I'M WIZPIG! BAH-HAH-HAH-HAH!" when chosen and accepted.
@YoshiAngemon: I was talking about a new game in the DKCR “adventure racing” style more than an actual remaster or sequel to that specific game, really.
The last entry was tons of fun. It was like a love letter to all their old IPs.
It's rich of SEGA to claim that they have an "all star" lineup. Sonic is their only household name and they've tarnished the brand to the point of no return.
Oh man, the nostalgia. I remember playing uh... SART on my Wii U a while back and boy it was a lot of fun. I wish Sega could dish out the kind of quality they have for these racing games for their Sonic games. Many may disagree with me, but I feel like a tradtional Sonic game could play well as a single-player racer-style game with racetrack like level designs. That's just me though
Nope if anything sumo is working on an separate project and we will just get another bad sonic game from SAGA. It's time they took the poor old hedgehog out to pasture, but no they need that lazy sonic money made by slapping sonic in every game they make.
@retro_player_22 Checked this out on youtube after you mentioned it. Completely passed me by. Thank you. It's brilliant!
@YoshiAngemon The only character in Diddy Kong Racing owned by Nintendo is Diddy so if they replace it with any other and change the name of the game Rare could release it for Xbox. It's probably the best "karting" game ever made. They could also make a sequel without Diddy (the only monkey in that game anyway).
Or Nintendo could allow them to use Diddy, after all he was created by Rare and Microsoft allowed Nintendo to use Jetpac in the Wii U version of Donkey Kong 64. Not sure that Nintendo is generous, though.
I'd love a new SART game or SAR honestly, but, give me 'classic' Sonic to race with. Not that long-finned gangley modern freak of a creature they call 'modern' Sonic.
@Anti-Matter I know, the Mii outfits are so cool! You should get the Sonic one!
@BlueOcean That would basically make it into a Banjo-Kazooie Racing game, if they replaced Diddy with Kazooie, and Krunch with Mumbo (or at least Klungo).
@YoshiAngemon Banjo-Kazooie racing game sounds pretty cool (Banjo-Pilot was too limited by GBA hardware).
