Whatever happened to the space in-between Soul and Calibur? That's just one of the questions that keeps us awake at night. One of the other questions relates to the sixth game in the illustrious weapon-based fighting series, and its chances of coming to the Nintendo Switch - something that was rumoured not so long ago (just like pretty much every other new game announcement of note, in fact).
Producer Motohiro Okubo has put our minds at ease, even if it's not quite the response we were looking for. Speaking to Metro, he admits that SoulCalibur VI isn't currently in development for Switch, but that doesn't necessarily mean the game will bypass the console altogether:
Is there any chance of a Switch version, so we can have Link again?
Motohiro Okubo: SoulCalibur VI development started more than three years ago. And nobody knew anything about Switch back then. So, as a matter of fact we are not working on Switch, as of now. But of course, personally, I’m interested in the platform. So if the Unreal Engine can adapt to Switch, and evolve itself, then maybe the possibility will be more.
It always helps if you have a console which interests developers, so the chances of SoulCalibur VI coming to Switch are hopefully quite high. This might seem like a silly question (unlike us asking about what happened to that space - that's a perfectly reasonable question, thanks very much) but would you like to see this title come to Switch?

"So if the Unreal Engine can adapt to Switch"
Spoiler alert, UE4 has native Switch support
Edit: I suppose they could be using Unreal Engine 3, though I'm not sure why they would since Unreal Engine 4 was out around the time they started development
Not a surprising answer.
The grovelling battle ended with a victory for Namco. You lose
On a personal level I couldn't care if this comes to Switch as I'm not a big fighter fan (plus after the massive disappointment of SC4 I lost any interest at all). For the consoles sake it would be a good release to have.
However would be game for maybe a SC2 HD port of the GC version.
At least the reason is honest (length of development), which is the issue with most third party games skipping Switch right now.
...I won't hold my breath.
@XenoShaun
maybe but the power differential is real. it's so easy to poop out ps4/xb1/pc games now that messing around downgrading everything to the switch and THEN farting about with resolution adaptations and framerate adaptations probably isn't something a lot of houses want to deal with.
the switch is better served by budget indies, old remakes, and nintendo's less than taxing games.
a remake of the GC version as stated would be nice for those SC fans.
This is a game that I would rather play on one of the other consoles.
so what? If it comes out later it's too late. I've moved on. They didn't care enough at the start so i won't care enough moving forward.
I doubt it will happen. Most fighting game enthusiasts want the highest possible quality from their games, not versatility or portability. Even if we did get it, it would be a port, not developed for the system, and at this point I don't trust "big AAA companies" to treat the Switch versions with respect. Bethseda being the exception.
Would love to see it come. Still wondrr who guest charat will be.
I liked Soul Calibur 2, I loved Soul Calibur 3. If this game will be at least as good as Soul Calibur 5 (that was just ok and nothing more) I'd like to have it on Switch. But if it will be as ugly as Soul Calibur 4 was I couldn't care less about it. Of course I hope it will be fantastic like Soul Calibur 3 was and that it will be ported to Switch.
Of course I hope for every game to come to Switch. Tbh, I would've bought on the Switch, but I'm not really interested on other platforms.
But we are almost a year into the lifespan. These excuses of "oh well, ya know... we didn't know what the Switch was when we started development" are going to wear thin fairly soon.
one of thoese games, that i can get on PS4 or PC. i'll only double dip if the game offer something exclusive or if it's a good port (if their is one)
Every Soul Calibur game after SC2 has been a disappointment.
This lack of direct, straight forward support from Namco saddens me, but I understand their business point of view. But if all they games are based on unreal engine... surely they can have someone outside port them down to the Switch, no? Because I would buy them all! Especially you "Ace combat 7", especially you...
@Equinox Let's hope so.
A lot of 3rd party games aren't immediately putting their games into the Switch because they weren't aware of the Switch's existence. We'll most likely see more intertwined releases in the future.
I'm very underwhelmed by the 3rd party support. This is just typical. Namco Bandai:- "We've no plans to put our new game Soul Calibur VI on Switch but here, have some Pac-man port instead". It's like they feed us the crumbs that fall from their table and they expect us to be grateful.
I guess this means I'll have to wait for those three big Switch games early next year.
Look you don't understand. I NEED Bamco games on the Switch!
Hopefully development for a Switch port starts in 2018. Of course it would come out later, but a Switch version with Link and maybe a Fire Emblem character or two would be great and people would buy it.
@sword_9mm Says a character with a Romeo and Juliet gun as a name. 😉
@MetaRyan Outlast 1 & 2 are coming to Switch in 2018 ad they're both Unreal Engine 3 games. Then again maybe Red Barrel Studio are handling the duty of making their own port of UE3 to the platform, but that's all rhetorical anyway.
they better bring one over or they ll have riots on their hands and switch can run unreal engine 4 perfectly well dont know why their making an excuse on that for soul calibur.
I think that all the people sounding off their negative ramblings, especially the usual ones, should cool their jets a bit and read and digest what was actually said; it isn't besides the truth, and it isn't all that bad either.
For upcoming games that have only very recently been announced, and which will work with Unreal Engine 4, there won't be any real excuse not to put it on Switch, other than a loss of graphical fidelity and/or frame rate, but in this specific case, the game is indeed too far along in its development process to put it on the Switch as well, or at least not at the same time, since that would mean quite a lot of work for the developers to tweak/downgrade the game to make it a good enough port.
Just look at how long it took to make the various ports of the other large, triple A games that we've gotten so far, those haven't been ported over in a mere couple of months either...
And he didn't say never, so it could still come at some later point in time, when their team will once again have the time and the manpower to focus on another platform besides the ones that they are working on now.
And we're not just receiving leftovers either, since all those "leftovers" are also released on the Xbox One and PS4, so in that respect, the Switch isn't treated any differently.
If Nintendo can keep the current momentum going, then numbers will only rise, and at some point, it will be next to impossible for any developer or publisher to ignore them, so the games WILL come, simple as that.
Provided Nintendo keeps up its end, obviously, but initial signs are positive enough, so we might all be a little less quick to worry about any impending/repeated third party support doom scenario, which (for now) is nowhere to be seen...
If the game started development 3 years ago then yeah this makes sense. They was never gonna release a Wii U version.
Not surprised they want to finish the current development before committing to a switch release. Don't agree with the moaning and negativity towards namco over this. They need to concentrate on finishing the game on other consoles and PC first.
Even with the not so stellar visuals I still not convinced switch could target 720p.
Once we see how it performs on xbox one we can get a rough idea. Tekken 7 performance on xbox one shows the problems of getting that have running on switch hardware
Nobody was making money when the WiiU was at 12 million units worldwide. So even if the Switch has a good first year not surprising Publishers are still playing it safe.
Same as One Piece. They gave a safe port of One Piece: Red but no mention about One Piece: World Seeker.
If it began development so long ago, I wouldn't hold my breath. They had other ideas and specs when they began designing this game, and it is understandable.
Specially if it uses Unreal Engine 3, porting it to the Switch may not be worth it.
I’ll probably just get on PS4, regardless if this comes to Switch or not.
A Link-inclusive port of II HD would suffice.
Anything that has come out or will come out between march 2017 and around September 2018 or so , I won't be surprised if they don't have a switch version ready at launch, or whatever, because the Switch is new and still need developers to port or whatever they need to do.
...a little after that time I gave, I won't be so easy on them without a reasonable excuse. How can developers just piss on the Switch crowd, after the big install base....? I don't want them to be like "later in the future"... You mean when your game sales for $20 on PC and other consoles and you expect Switch owners to just hand you a full retail price?
I understand that a game in developement a few years before the NX became the Switch, may not have had anything or much, of the Switch in mind.
But after everyone (developers) knows what the Switch is.... They either want to or not, not maybe. This is for the "AAA" titles
The real answer is that they don't want our money so they won't get our money.
@XenoShaun
id also be up for SC2 HD port of the GC version, if the price was right of course. but saying that i paid £40 for Street fighter already, and will likely get the SF collection also if it is £40 or less.
i gave up on soul calibur when 5 came out with very few characters and they started to become pay to win on side games of soul calibur.
I'd rather they focus on a Tekken for Switch or a new Ridge Racer (how long has it been since we saw a new entry?)
@Heavyarms55 Super Street Fighter IV sold 1.2 million copies on 3ds. I think its a good number
Bring Link back! I don't care if he's DLC! Bring him back, and I'll die a happy Zelda fan!
I wont buy this at a later time so dont focus on porting it a year later, just focus on a brand new game for switch.
Probably it won't happen, or at least not anytime soon, but I REALLY hope it comes to the Switch.
I love fighting games, and SC is one of my favorite series.
But....but that rumor PROMISED that it was coming to the Switch!!
In all honesty, I only have Soul Calibur 2 on GameCube and while it’s a good game, I probably won’t get SC6. But who knows. Maybe if the game is really good or it comes to the Switch I’ll get it. If no Switch, then definitely PS4 (but only if it’s good).
I wouldn’t object to having it on the switch. I haven’t played one since Soul Calibur 2. I kind of wish soul calibur 2 he was an option
To me it sounds as if the publishers want to load off the work. This is an interest check if any other company wants to handle the port.
I'm not planning to buy SoulCalibur VI and support Namco, but that might change in the future if they decide to become serious about attracting me as a customer.
@SanderEvers
For me, it's one of the few I have.
Thank goodness I have a Game Boy Player jacked in, alongside all the games I needed back in the day: a Mario (although not a perfect one), a Mario Kart (still not a perfect one, even though the lack of single races is still more reasonable than the one in Mario Kart 7), a Smash Bros. (nothing to complain about here!), and that's it. I'd snag Twilight Princess and/or Wind Waker in their original selves, but they're unavailable below reasonable price tags.
pleasepleasepleaseplease.
I'm going to get the pc version but I'm not buying this game for any console but switch.
Hope they change their minds, I loved Soul Calibur 2 on Gamecube with Link, so would be neat if they released this one on Switch with Link again, or other Nintendo-exclusive characters, especially since it'd be a fun multiplayer game
@sword_9mm @sword_9mm
"the switch is better served by budget indies, old remakes, and nintendo's less than taxing games."
Wow... I couldn't disagree with you more. Though, I understand you're reasoning, and it all comes down to one word, POWER.
The Switch may not have the raw capacity to do what the Xbox One/X and PS4/Pro can do, but as its impressive launch lineup has proven it has the capability to compete in its own way. And that's just the thing, it doesn't have to compete directly with the other consoles because it's providing something useful for the busier half of today's gaming audience that the other consoles simply aren't, seamless and flexible mobility.
You're talking about it like it's a novelty at a gift shop, and you and I both know that there is no way it could have performed as well as it did with core gamers if that's all it was.
Basically, my point is, it may not be the most powerful console ever created but it is indeed the most core mobile gaming device ever created, and that's how it's relevant in today's gaming space.
I have a feeling that soul caliber vi probably will come to the switch. Let's not forget which company sold more units of soul caliber Ii
This would be interesting if Link would also be a returning character for SoulCalibur VI on Switch, I remember all the silly stuff I did on the GameCube version of SoulCalibur II. Geralt vs Link, anyone?
