It seems like official video game guides are a bit of an antiquated item in the current day and age. Just about every game now has extensive YouTube series covering every facet of the gameplay and going over it all in nuance that guides might miss, and games are also prone to change with patches, which places a physical guide book at even more of a disadvantage. Nonetheless, they act as nice collector’s items for those who are interested, and feature plenty of art that fans will appreciate.
For a while now, Prima has been Nintendo’s go-to company for producing guides for all its new games, and that trend is set to continue with the fast approaching release of Super Mario Odyssey. On launch day, there will be a 320-page softcover copy and a 336-page hardcover collector’s edition, which can be found here and here. No info is present as to what all will be included, but given the exploratory nature of this particular Mario release, the guide will probably be something pretty handy to keep nearby.

Meh, I have Google for that.
I'll stick with the inevitable Starter Guide that'll appear on MyNintendo for 10 Gold Points. I have no use for a guide, especially in a Mario game but at least it lets me spend some points.
I'm still waiting on the Hotel Mario Prima guide.
Best just get the Starter Guide version in MyNintendo. Or even better, just check out YouTube. Even better? Do it yourself, that's the fun of games, being stuck and having to figure out the solution by yourself.
Oh, good. I love having all that info readily available at my fingertips. When's the last time a Nintendo game other than Pokémon or a multiplatform release even got a guidebook released for it?
I still think it's always good to get a physical guide if you have the choice to. You don't have to keep surfing around Gamefaqs, IGN, and all the other internet guides, because you can just quickly look it up in the book. Another plus is that if you're looking for a day 1 guide, IGN, GameFAQS, even Nintendolife won't have a guide for you. I may or may not pick this up depending on whether or not I 100% the game by around christmas time.
Btw, how many Moons in the games to make Mario Flying to the Moon ?
@BulbasaurusRex There's been quite a few of these Prima guides the last couple of years. Splatoon 1 and 2 have one, as do BOTW, MK8D and Xenoblade X. I think ARMS might have one too but I'm not sure about that.
@BulbasaurusRex Every Zelda game gets a guide.
Honestly why buy a strategy guide when you can find one online for free.
@OorWullie BOTW guides are actually from a different publisher, Piggyback.
@OorWullie I mean, Piggybank. (Darn collect autospell.)
@TF-Warrior I didn't realise that cheers.
@Tasuki Why? Well, the information is laid out better, I find it more accessible than having to load up whatever device you are surfing on, people like "things", either to collect or because they just look nice. Oh, and it smells good as well
Just hope it's full size. The MK8D one was half the usual size. Felt a bit conned when that dropped through the letterbox.
Back in 2007 when Super Mario Galaxy came out I used to subscribe to Ngamer magazine and with that they provided a free guide telling you how to obtain all 120 stars. I have to say it was pretty handy for some of the more tricky levels. I actually still have it somewhere.
These days though it's so much easier to simply pick up your mobile phone and get the level up via game explain on you tube.
I'm really looking forward to this game though and the exploration of the levels is all part of the fun. I try to make a point of not using you tube videos for help unless I'm REALLY struggling, it's so much more rewarding to complete a level without "cheating"
People are debating the usefulness of a physical guide in the age of the Internet and all I gotta say is - I just love physical books. Reading a book on your tablet is nothing compared to physically turning page after page and soaking in the pages's smell. Sure hope a translated version comes to Germany. BotW got one and so did Galaxy 1 and 2 back in the day.
To be hones I used them back in the day without internet. Since I got internet access I never used them.
You could argue that they have some really nice artwork in them and for most of them this might be true but I would like a hardcover "The Art of..." book more for the games I care about.
I'm annoyed they still seem to be using Prima. I thought they may be moving away from them after BOTW guide was done by PiggyBack.
The recent Prima guides that have been abysmal are:
NES Classic - cheap paper, missing maps
Twilight Princess HD - they mostly re-used their guide they did for the GameCube version of the game, including a mistake on the location of a treasure chest!
Xenoblade Chronicles X - the book itself looked nice, but the guide was completely useless and finding the locations of things was impossible.
The annoying thing is that I'm a sucker for physical guides, especially collectors editions which generally have lots of nice artwork and other info. I have many of the official Nintendo Players guides that Nintendo did for GB/SNES/N64/GBA/GC/DS/Wii and still use them to this day. I wish Nintendo still did their own guides, they were always the best.
@OorWullie I'm hording all my points for when physical reward's come around
I have some birthday money leftover and might pre order the collectors edition. I got Prima's guide for Splatoon 2 as well. 🤔
@crackafreeze Exuncly. I did the mistake by using guides whenever I was stuck in Zelda and finished the story in 55 hours. A disappointing state for my first Zelda game and fist playthrough... To compensate, I spent the rest of the time playing without guides. I won't do that same mistake for a Zelda game again...
@crackafreeze lol yeah
Deh... Collector's item at best. Strat guides really mattered back in the day when jack and squat made sense lol. But to each their own
