Slowly and surely the range of game styles and genres is growing on the Switch eShop, and now Chess Ultra is confirmed to be filling a very particular gap later this year.
It's being developed and published by Ripstone, which boasts that it's the "best looking chess game in the world". Based on the trailer and limited information to date there'll be tutorials, a range of offline modes and online play.
Ripstone has been here before, publishing Pure Chess by VooFoo Studios on the Wii U and 3DS eShop. That game was impressive as it supported crossplay between those systems and smart device players, too. It was a handsome chess game, though the lack of real-time online matches was a tad disappointing, as it was limited to a 'play by mail' approach of taking turns. Ideally Chess Ultra will support both time-limited live games and also longer turn-based matches in its online offering for Switch.
Update:
Thanks to the comments we now realise this has already been released on PC and other consoles, priced at £9.99 on Steam in the UK. Below is a feature checklist from a press release, too.
- Stunning environments and beautiful chess sets, including a ‘Fire and Brimstone’ chess set that literally burns
- 10 Grandmaster approved AI levels
- Comprehensive time controls, including Classical, Blitz and Marathon, all available online
- Intuitive local and online multiplayer with ELO ranking system
- Over 80 chess puzzles
- Re-write the past by winning the biggest historic matches
- In-depth tutorials
Are you looking forward to this on the Switch?
With thanks to SLIGEACH_EIRE for the heads up.

This should be great. I've Pure Chess on the Wii U which is from the same company and it's fantastic. It allowed cross platform play so hopefully this will too.
No ultimate checkers?
erm, no game play ONCE AGAIN! Therefore not interested, it could just look like a mobile shovelware for all i know.
Sold!
I'm hoping that online also supports realtime matches. I enjoy the 'play by mail' approach too, but sometimes I want to chill for 90 minutes or so in a timed clock game.
This is all that I wanted and more...is this a dream?
@Bunkerneath I fully agree, I really hate it that game ads these days don't show any gameplay. No matter how beatiful your ad is, if there is no gameplay I will not be able to know whether I would like it. In this case though I probably will not buy it anyway, as I am not interested in a digital chess game.
@Bunkerneath It will look good.
This is gameplay from Pure Chess on Wii U.

It's chess though, you don't need a whole lot going on. Plus it should be cheap, Pure Chess is €5.99.
Pure Chess was a great game that was absolutely beautiful. I'm expecting nothing less from this.
That subtitle... groan*
It hurts so good.
This will give me the opportunity to hone my chess skills again after I have let them rust for the past 8 years or so. Hopefully the game runs well, frame rate wise, and I'll be all over this day one.
Despite the atmosphere being a million miles away from ultra fast bass, a mode 7 spinning chess board hurtling towards you and an engrish announcer yelling 'Chess Champ '17'...chess is one of my favourite games. It does look beautiful in all seriousness
Ready for a release date and some challengers.
I feel like these guys should be making more than just chess games. These environments are very impressive; loved Pure Chess on Wii U/Android.
@LegacySmikey Ah my bad, will look out some info and update the post.
Ah..... a chess ?
Sweet, that can go next to my shogi game. And once I get monopoly my board game trifecta will be complete.
I bought Pure Chess on Wii U and was promptly disappointed when I found there was no real-time multiplayer. Logging in over and over again to finish a game of chess over a period of weeks wasn't fun at all. I won't even mention the fact that many people just never played their turn in the games we started. That said, the game looks great, and that remix of Moonlight Sonata in the trailer is delightfully catchy. I may have missed it in this article, but is this one going to have real-time online multiplayer?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I prefer simple graphics for sure, especially for chess. I have the last couple iterations of Deep Fritz, and the first thing I always do is disable 3D graphics. It's just easier (for me) to navigate and see what's going on with a 2D board.
What I'm really hoping for, but is super unlikely, is that this could function as a FICS client.
So its chess porn...
I guess I will buy it.
Great! Keep the price sensible and I'd be happy to add this to the collection.
Looks amazing. Playing pure chess was a delight on the wii u.
Looking forward to this (hoping for more awesome backgrounds too, or if they add shogi too :> )
Don't care, got two tabletop and one portable Saiteks.
@Kiz3000 "This will give me the opportunity to hone my chess skills again after I have let them rust for the past 8 years or so."
But you're only about 9, right? Lol jk
I bought Pure Chess for Wii U but for some reason I only played it once. I'm not really a chess player but I thought a console chess game would be fun. I never really gave it a proper chance.
@Bunkerneath I strongly disagree with your comment. The truth to the reality is that Chess Ultra is also available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and virtual reality. If I were you, I would do some research before posting a comment.
i'll wait for the complete edition of chess in 400 years
I'm probably going to get this. Being able to do chess on the go and on the tv is appealing to me. Hopefully they make cross platform play an option.
Oh, gosh! I have not played a real game of chess in years. It's been so long, so what the hay! This should be great for me to dive back in. cracks knuckles
