The ACA Neo Geo game series just keeps ticking right along, faithfully increasing in volume with each passing week; at this rate, it feels like we’ll have the entire console’s library available. For those of you that are into old school fighters, this coming week’s new offering will no doubt be a welcome addition.
Fatal Fury Special will be launching next week on the 13th, for the usual rate of ACA Neo Geo games of $7.99 / €6.99 / £6.29. Taking a page from Street Fighter’s book, this one is a faster remix of Fatal Fury 2—which also got an ACA release—and adds a few new characters and a combo system. Here’s the game’s description from the eShop:
Fatal Fury Special is a fighting game released by SNK in 1993. Fatal Fury Special is a powered-up version of Fatal Fury 2 which brings a faster game speed, introduces combo attacks for the first time in the series, and welcomes more returning characters for a total of 15 fighters. Clear the game with specific conditions and Ryo Sakazaki from Art of Fighting will appear.

Yet another Neo Geo game for my Neo Geo Switch. I mean, this is a Neo Geo system right?
Strange that they release this so soon after FF2. But this is the one to get, folks!
@Bengals76 I have NO problems with that!
No point in getting Fatal Fury 2 with Special coming out soon.
This game is the sole reason the King of Fighters series exist and the game that define the words, Dream Match. The same no story dream match that defined games like Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers, Samurai Shodown V Special, Samurai Shodown VI, The King of Fighters 98, KOF 2001, and KOFXII.
@masterLEON @shonenjump86 That is unless you care about the story in FF2 as Fatal Fury Special had no storyline since it basically is a dream match title cause no way is Geese Howard that young and still alive and a young Ryo Sakazaki appeared in the roster which would never happen in the canon storyline. Other than that, it's basically the "Super" version of Fatal Fury 2 similar to how Super Street Fighter II was to Street Fighter II Turbo.
Also coming in the next few weeks are Aero Fighters 2 ,King of the Fighters 2000 and best of all,Super Sidekicks.With SS now confirmed I hope that means its many sequels will also come.Baseball Stars 2020 would be great too.I really love how the Neo Geo games look on the handheld,I've bought 5 already and am tempted to buy more.I bought Last resort last night and it's fantastic,can't stop playing it.
These ACA Neo games, does they have online play?
@OorWullie just looking at what the XBOX, PS4 andP.C have got, I'm pretty sure I'll be buying most of the next 20 games from the ACA library, lol
@PAHTK I just bought another one,Metal Slug 3.Going to play it now
@OorWullie I've gotten 4 myself. I really liked the turf masters and waku waku. I would love to see more of the old sports titles like baseball.
@eltomo No unfortunately. It has online leaderboards, but no online play.
@retro_player_22 yeah, good point. I always prefer Special because of the cast and gameplay.
I was gonna say we need another Neo Geo fighting game for Switch.
@OorWullie I seem to buy them every gen, right now I have the PS2 collection on PS4 but if the gods of gaming somehow grace the Switch with Metal Slug 1, 2, X, 3, 4, 5, 6 and XX I will buy them all to finally have the whole damn collection on one system.
@Ps4all I've got Turf Masters too, I'm playing it now as it happens. Yeah I'd love for more old sports titles to come. I had Baseball Stars 2020 on Wii VC and it was great but the rest of them, I've only played a couple of times, if at all in the arcades back in the day.
Awesome, this one's a keeper!
@Bengals76
The PC Engine Switch is next, I think. Personally, I am just waiting for the Nintendo Switch, with all of those old classic Nintendo games on it.
Hopefully it's an improvement on Fatal Fury 2.
As nice as it is having the weekly Neo-Geo releases, I'd love to see Hamster get the PS4's Arcade Archives series started up!
It would feel so right to play the arcade versions of Contra, Double Dragon 1 & 2, Gradius, Life Force, Super Dodge Ball, Bubble Bobble, etc. on a Nintendo system! Then to have their NES counterparts, when Nintendo gets around to gracing us with a VC service, would make the Switch Nintendo retro gamer Heaven!
I have boughy exaxtly 0 neo geo games and dont intend to buy any.
Maybe one day Nintendo will release classic games on the neo geo switch? At this point its becoming rather farsical.
Well I've bought all of them so there's that.
@Ooyah Yes pls. I love the PC Engine. I'll be picking Special up as I do have a nostalgic fondness to it. So many great retro games and the VC console isn't even out yet! Amazing
I'm getting more and more anxious for KOF '95 and 2000's Eshop release as I'm worrying that Hamster'll stop weekly releases eventually.
I've still not bought any of these - though I welcome them - mainly because I already have Ultra SF II, so I don't need umpteen Vs fighters. That said, I will dip in for Samurai Shodown 2, when it comes, and I'm pretty tempted by Waku Waku and KoF '98. I've got the Metal Slugs on my watchlist (need to finish up some other 2D games first) - so Super Sidekicks might be the first one for me.
I was not expecting this one so soon after "Fatal Fury 2".
And that means that we will start getting "Real Bout" series next!
Also put one hour aside and watch this epic Game Center CX episode.
Can we PLEASE get the original Baseball Stars?!? The NES version remains one of the best arcade baseball games ever, and the NEO GEO version blows it away.
This is getting silly now.
Finally! This is the one we should've gotten in the first place!
Which probably means we're getting Metal Slug X soon after, as it's a similar situation with Metal Slug 2.
Give it a rest SNK, they should try making many new games instead of racing old arcade ports down ppls throats for years on end
I want 3 count bout, savage reign, and rage of the dragons I always wanted to play those.
And while your at it give us the real bout games
@EDF
It's not SNK publishing these.
@Humphries90
Whoever it is, enough already
I'm definitely getting this. However, where the heck is that Pocket Fighter game that was supposed to come out awhile back? It got pushed back then poof.
Edit: Actually, I'm gonna wait on Real Bout Fatal Fury 2... I want the most fighters and polished experience. This is tempting... but I don't want a game on my Switch that'll be left behind for another eventually.
I liked FF2 better than this, definitely. It wasn't better, just different. Some things added, some things removed.
I'm gonna skip it.
