Square Enix is bringing its Picross-style title Pictlogica Final Fantasy to the Nintendo 3DS as a free-to-play release, it has been revealed.
It's based on the smartphone version of the game, which was released in Japan in 2015. There are more than 300 puzzles to beat and 160 characters are included from the famous RPG series. The game's quest mode sees you controlling a team of four members and mixes Picross-tyle gameplay with magic, battles and even summons.
There's no word on whether or not this will make it out of Japan, but if you're interested and you own a Japanese 3DS system, you can check it out when it launches on July 12th.
Thanks to David van Mil for the tip!

Looks like a cool game so I hope it comes west. However, I am always skeptical about free-to-play games so I will wait and see what the catch is.
Not sure about the free-to-play style (Pokemon Shuffle made me weary with a massive halt to gameplay), but I hope this game is a fun Final Fantasy spin-off like Theatrythm: Curtain Call is!
This looks good and is free so yeah is a download for sure.
if it comes west I will definitely be downloading it. I love Picross and Final Fantasy
This was released as a Japanese mobile game in Oct. '13 and still hasn't seen release outside of it. The original version was developed by Jupiter which is the "official" Picross developer. Maybe this version will since it's presumable still developed by Jupiter and most of their other 3DS picross games — Picross e to e7, Pokemon Picross and LoZ: Twilight Princess Picross have but not the two Club Nintendo reward games — were released outside Japan.
I'd love to see this arrive here, I'm always up for a game of picross. I enjoyed the Twilight Princess Picross, as well as Pokémon picross, so I don' see why I won't enjoy this as well.
As far as the free part is concerned, I've managed to make my way through most of Pokémon picross without having to pay, so if this one follows a similar model, it shouldn't bother me to bad.
3DS needs an official new update from Nintendo for Region Free patch before 3DS discontinued...
I'm still hammering through Pokemon Picross (finally unlocked Alt World), but this looks cool. Here's to hoping for a western release.
Hope this stays in Japan. Ever since the DS, Square Enix has been doing a bad job of giving 3DS gamer a true Final Fantasy experience and instead focusing on meh spinoff after spinoff. Where's the FFV and FFVI remakes Square Enix or a third FF Tactics Advance game? Instead the only thing we got on 3DS in terms of FF is a Monster Hunter clone, two music games and now a Picross clone. What next a FF cooking game? Just make a FF RPG and bring it.
I'm probably one of the rare people who's more interested in the Picross side of the game than the Final Fantasy side of it.
No interest in Final Fantasy, but I would play this, being the helpless Picross junkie that I am. If the F2P model carries over to the West, then I hope that it can essentially be purchased outright like how Pokémon Picross was handled (essentially AU$39 worth of purchases unlocked the "full" version of the game), however it is outrageously overpriced for what it is, especially for a digital-only release.
I want it. I'm currently playing the Japanese exclusive Picross 2 for GB.
I am to stupid for picross games.
Because its not like we need the FFVII remake on Switch.
*Sigh
Square, do you know what most 3DS-owning Squaresoft fans would rather have? Rereleases of the 8/16-bit Final Fantasies!
Lookee here, a tip of mine got featured!
I am obsessed with picross, so you bet I will download the living crud out of this if it goes worldwide.
If this goes west I'll be sure to pick it up.
Still time to put FF6 on the 3DS though guys, if you want $10 for minimal effort
@DragonEleven not just you. my favorite Zelda games are Crossbow Training, Nintendo Land, and Picross.
Neat.
Not a fan of free-to-play. But I love Picross, so bring it on!
