Following today's announcement of Pokkén Tournament DX we have an increasingly clear picture of Nintendo's first-party plans for Switch over the next few months. The company has accentuated the point with a new trailer showcasing three games.
In the video you can see plenty of photogenic and enthusiastic gamers playing ARMS, Splatoon 2 and Pokkén Tournament DX; some of them have great eyesight, too, considering how far away they sit when playing the Switch in tabletop mode. All told it's a pretty effective trailer, we reckon - check it out below.
These aren't all of the Summer releases on Switch, of course, but as a triple-header of competitive games they work well together; their release dates are below.
- ARMS - 16th June
- Splatoon 21st July
- Pokkén Tournament DX - 22nd September
Do you like this pitch for the Nintendo Switch Summer?

September isn't in Summer, it's Autumn(or Fall as the Americans wrongly say).
So what's our August game, Nintendo?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
I was just about to say that. More specifically, Fall (see what I did there?) starts exactly on Sept. 22 this year. Lol.
Plenty to play this summer 😃
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It is for university/college students who don't start lectures/classes till October.
Does we know yet if Splatoon 2 has any sort of local multi-player?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Technically, assuming the game releases at midnight on the 22nd, it's still before the autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere. Still summer for most of that day.
That Splatoon map ***DROOL**
@SLIGEACH_EIRE If you believe there's a wrong way to speak the language, your English is wrong too. The right way would be found in England, specifically London. If you believe that.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE summer starts on the middle of june and end on the middle of september
Is Steamworld Dig 2 still heading for a summer release I wonder?
So FE Warriors on August? Or October?
meh maybe Pokken...Splatoon seems good but I might get it for the wave mode.
Hopefully we'll get some pleasant surprises at E3. That's two more fighting games as major releases. Hopefully (prayerfully?) Mario Odyssey still makes it this year, at least before Christmas.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Majority of it is in summer, though.
You notice how smokey it looks in that Splatoon party?
420 they know what's up.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE september is summer in western europe. 21st june to 21st september.
EDIT: I just realise how stupid my comment is, 22nd of september indeed isn't summer. Although most of september is summer.
All these summer games makes me think Nitnedo was really planning on having paid online begin in the fall. People busy playing Zelda, Mario and XC2 don't really need to pay to play online.
$300 Switch on top of a drum, what could possibly go wrong?
I'm still happy Nintneod is marketing and making good ads. I saw the ARMS in the garage ad in front of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 in the theater last week. Can't wait for E3 and seeing what they have planned for the holidays.
@GoldenGamer88 Rabbids x Mario most likely but we're not suppose to know anything about that yet!
@Spoony_Tech Oh yeah, those leaks did mention an August release!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I agree, but it's Nintendo's slogan not mine
@Steelhead That's what Image and Form keep saying on Twitter. Trust me, I ask often but they seem to make it sound like definitely in the summer. Here's hoping for that date next week!
@rjejr When does Nintendo earn the right with you to be spelled right? What must they do? Just curious.
@GoldenGamer88 I was thinking the same thing! Surely it won't be Smash DX, that would be way to many brawlers! Maybe the rabbids crossover, or something to be as of yet unannounced (Pikmin 4, Animal Crossing?)
@GoldenGamer88 Hmm, looking at the release schedule, I guess our August games are Sonic Mania and Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, as well as whatever else gets confirmed for August between now and then. There's still a fair number of games that are listed as just Summer or just 2017.
I'm waiting for other content. Good to see some big games this early for Switch, though, even if they are mostly ports.
@GoldenGamer88 Sonic Mania from Sega aka the dreamcast fell through and now we're destined to make dozens of games starring a hedgehog and tetris pieces vs blobs. 😉
Don't worry, I'll be picking up the blue spikey thing for platform fun.
Here in Ireland Summer is June, July and August.
The advert is good but they need to show you can play arms on pro controller /joycon grip too so that casuals know there is another way to play.
Also pokemon should have been after splatoon2 as it looks like it could be part of arms footage if you know nothing about it.
**sadface** I'm sad because even though the summer releases are great games for Nintendo fans I'm not interested in any of them. Maybe the August release will be Dragon Quest X..... Well actually scratch that. That would mean a North American release before Japan. Not happening. **Sadface**
Maybe the Eshop will be my ticket.
I legitimately was confused thinking why it was called "Switch Summer" when all these games are releasing in Winter but they I remembered Australia and the rest of the world is always opposite.... XD
@Alikan @Folkloner Sonic Mania! How could I have ever forgotten about it? Well, guess my brain is all Pokemon, Pokemon and more Pokemon after the Direct today lol.
Splatoon 2 all the way baby.
Hey we have great games coming out but have fun finding our system to play them on!!!!!!!!!!
I've seen one physical system since they have been released and not a single system on a store shelf.
@Spoony_Tech I'm using all my time correcting AMRS, I don't have time for Nintendo.
For the life of me, I can't figure out why I keep misspelling AMRS like that but it happens every single time.
TBH I've given up on Nintendo, I just don't care anymore. When I start mistyping Sony then I'll worry about it.
Maybe 5 million more NES Mini will get me to focus.
So I'm just gonna turn off my ps4. Its been in sleep mode since the Switch came out. ARMS and Splatoon 2 alone are enough to ensure I'm booked all summer. I love this system so much.
It's interesting how much table top mode is featured considering how little I use it.
But then I'm not a millennial playing at parties I guess - which some of the advertising is pitching as the zeitgeist. And pitching it well!
Have You seen that August is missing? Well, this will be filled with the rabbids mario game;-)
Nintendo is lining up a perfect summer of competition. I am all in, here's hoping they have something special stashed away for an E3 reveal.
@sligeach_eire The word "Fall" to mean Autumn comes from ancient German or Norse languages
Cheese
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I've always thought the same, well it is that way over in Clare HaHa!
@FX102A
What college starts in October? Every one I've attended or worked at has started in September.
@GoldenGamer88 "So what's our August game"
You darned well know the answer to that! You might try to force it from your mind, but deep down, you know.....
@Ryu_Niiyama So true. I'm looking at these Summer/Fall games (and I don't even like online/competitive gaming!)....I'm looking at what's coming out by 2018 including freaking Skyrim...... Persona 5 is going to be sitting in shrinkwrap for a decade. Might as well just sell Horizon. The VCR has lost my interest completely. (Side: Still watching the Sony show though....because.)
@JoeDiddley I think they're overdoing the trendy urban millennials at group crash houses and parties thing though. I'm glad they're targeting adults instead of their cringy "sis and bruh and ma and pa" 1950's commercials, but they're really overdoing the whole theme of "this is for people living in upscale, up cost, up crime rate, down sanitation, urban environments, with arts studies backgrounds, who live for trends and organic eateries and all seem to have parties and group events with Switches." It's A good angle, but too much of it makes it look like a hipster box. At this rate they might as well add Whole Foods as an official distributor.
Summer or Autumn, who cares ?
As long there are Great Nintendo games, seasons / dates doesn't really matter.
@NEStalgia Bit too late, mate. Was already reminded of 'it'.
"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED"?!!
Gladiator-Russell Crowe voice
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
here in Ireland summer is June, July and August
And September. Ireland is no different than any other country in the northern hemisphere.
In fact, if any month should not be considered summer, it's June, which has less summer days than September does.
Where I live (Athens) summer can be May, June, July, August, September and October. Where I live Autumn or Fall is called Fthinoporo, so not a big deal
@GoldenGamer88 You can never be reminded about "it" too much
@Refurin The ones in the UK.
It was nice having an extra month off to laugh at the kids on school.
Then I remembered our exams.
So far ARMS is the only game that I don't already have access to on the Wii U (Splatoon really doesn't appeal to me at all as I tend to be a solo/couch co-op gamer). Again there is little or nothing for a Wii U owner to be excited about unless they love repurchasing games.
I'll check back in a year when I can get a discounted Switch by just walking into any store, along with fresh content, and maybe some heavily discounted retreads. But to be honest there is just as much of a chance I will still be happy with the Wii U. I just don't seem to have as strong of a consumeristic drive to own the latest greatest these days.
3 years ago, Nintendo released their first major online focused Wii U game (Mario Kart 8), nearly 20 months after the console's holiday 2012 launch.
Now, Nintendo will release 4 big online focused Switch games (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms, Splatoon 2, and Pokken DX) within the first 7 months of the Switch's lifecycle.
What a turnaround. Nintendo went from almost forgetting about online games to releasing almost a bit too many.
Not interested in any of these three but there are a large amount of games coming out in addition to the ones I still have to pick up to keep me quite happy
@SLIGEACH_EIRE "Autumn" has too many consonants. Gives us less time for stuffing potato chips into our mouths.
If the weather is warm - it's Summer!
Namco museum!!
All I think when I watch these things is: God, young people dress like idiots nowadays.
Good trailer.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think you'll find September 21st is the start of autumn- 3 months after the start of summer 21st June
I didn't like Arms much from my time with the Testpunch. I'll be skipping it. Also have no interest in Pokken.
Looks like I'll be playing MK8 until Splatoon gets here.
@retroxdp nope I am too- far more
@SLIGEACH_EIRE it really isn't
@darkswabber it's one day- most of September is summer 😂
I think these games will have varying degrees of success. I think Splatoon 2 will do well all over, but I feel all three of these games will do like gangbusters in territories like Japan. For some reason, ARMS really strikes me as a game that the Japanese will love - and we all know how they feel about Splatoon.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE We 'Muricans don't only say Fall. We say Autumn when we want to sound smart.
@westman98 There online still sucks something fierce. Voice chat being provided on an app is ass backwards not to mention the total lack of VC at this time. Plus Splatoon 2 is keeping the map rotation system which is trash. Just let us pick the mode we want to play and then vote on the map like any other fps.
As for the summer releases I didn't dig Arms, it's fun but not $60 fun. Splatoon 2 is really the only "must have" for the summer as Pokken wasn't really all that great. Even if you dig all those games 3 games in 4 months is still pretty sparse and I would've hoped Nintendo would've gotten more games available even on the eshop considering they let the Wii U wither for 2 years.
@JpGamerGuy90
Nintendo's online service and the 4 games I mentioned themselves are far from perfect (voice chat on a smart device is a terrible idea), but their focus on online gaming is clear and will greatly benefit the Switch.
Ill just sit here while my starving Switch is waiting on its Xenoblade 2 or (English) Monster Hunter XX main course =(
#switchlivesmatter
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Oh you Brits and your Queen's English. Stuff it.
I kid, but yeah, September is def past Summer, what the heck, Nintendo?
@MegaVel91 I'm Irish, not British.
At least the Big N are keeping abreast in terms of marketing. Push push push that console!
@MoonKnight7 not until after 4pm. Nintendo is right. This releases this summer.
This will be a great summer. All releases considered, my summer top 3 list is #3 Splatoon. Lukewarm so far but I think it's cuz I'm so into my first choice. #2 Steamworld Dig 2. Can't wait for this one looks great! Like others I haven't heard any updates on the release date. #1 Arms. Will be fun to learn. Almost disappointed I'll be on vacation when it's released.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE My mistake ya blarney toad. : P
My family heritage is Scotch Irish.
I was sure Skyrim was down for August.
Pokken might be coming technically at the end of Summer given Fall doesn't generally start officially until around that time, but most grade school and college kids are going to be long back to class at that point in the US. Pokken would probably be a good dorm room game to have though.
@MegaVel91 It's Scottish not Scotch.Unless your heritage is whisky
they really are pushing the social aspect of there system. look at ps4/xbox adds, I love those systems but normally not a person to be seen in their adds. Nintendo though have people getting together in every frame.
An excellent video! Now let's get it on the TV!
@OorWullie Oh, lol.
Well it's a mix of Scottish and Irish, so hence the term. That's the term I grew up with for anyone or anything that is a mix of Scottish and Irish.
Ok just so everyone can get educated......seasons on the planet earth are determined by solar cycles.....we have the summer and winter solstices which are the longest and shortest days of the year and then we have the spring and fall equinox which are the the two days with equal length of day/night. Same everywhere in the northern hemisphere and just reversed in the southern. So yes technically Pokken DX comes out the first day of fall but here is the somewhat exciting thing....Nintendo appears to be setting and meeting an aggressive roll out schedule. This makes me think they have learned a bit from past issues with WiiU. I mean we already have Zelda, MK8D, and then quickly comes a new (and awesome) fighter with ARMS, a sequel to a very popular newer IP Splatoon, a spin off of maybe the most popular portable series Poke and then a 3D Mario and a major JRPG with Xeno2. That is how you do first party support. Someone care to remember what PS4 and XB1 got in major first party releases in year one? Nothing even close to this lineup. Also the big summer release I really want is what others mentioned and that is the new SteamWorld Dig2 game. Loved Dig1 but it was too short, really loved Heist and put a lot of hours in and then the DLC, so Dig2 with its expanded size and more metriodvania style is something I am really looking forward to.
