Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, courtesy of having all of the DLC tracks from the Wii U original, offers an impressive 48 tracks to take on. Not long ago the Nintendo UK Twitter page asked followers to vote for their favourite track in the whole game; we're slightly surprised that the end result was the new Rainbow Road.
The game's producer, Kosuke Yabuki, was asked to talk about the track and the design inspiration behind it:
My favourite part is how the two routes form an intertwined spiral, before heading into the final corner. The design allows for lots of different tactical gameplay depending on your items and the situation around you, such as changing your route, or taking a shortcut between the two paths of the spiral.
However, this is also the part where drivers from all over the world are most likely to fall off the track... If you keep falling off no matter what you do, then in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe you can try turning on Smart Steering. This option now gives anyone the opportunity to have fun driving around.
...We have been making Rainbow Road courses as a way of marking the end of each Mario Kart game. Since we’d decided that Mario Kart 8 would also include a remake of a past Rainbow Road, we worked to create new Rainbow Road visuals and audio making use of near-future technology, such as anti-gravity, in order to contrast with that.
Around the edge of the course you’ll see Toads wearing spacesuits and cheering you on. These are actually a symbol of the online mode of this game and appear in places like the matchmaking screen too, so keep an eye out for them.
In a neat touch you can, of course, do a custom GP of the top four courses:
- Rainbow Road
- Hyrule Circuit
- Mount Wario
- Bowser’s Castle
Do you agree that these are the top courses in the game? Probably not! Let us know which ones are your favourites in the comments.

I like the Animal Crossing track, not challenging by any means, but the visuals always bring a smile to my face. Guess, I am just a big Animal Crossing fan...
No grumble volcano!!!!! Poor do......
Tough choice. Maybe Yoshi's Valley(SNES), Rainbow Road(SNES) or Toad Harbour.
Definitely not Toad's Turdpike or Bowser City. They're manky.
The results in this poll sound like a fix is afoot.
Surely every person who voted was trolling... o_O
Mount Wario's pretty great, but it kinda feels like the others were picked just for being cool or iconic, although that's not to say I don't like them.
I really like the Dragon one and the Music one
I love Cloudtop Cruise for the music alone, but I sure do miss my Maple Treeway...there was always that star hidden in the leaves that you could exploit when you were in first place.
1. Mount Wario
2. Ribbon Road
3. The Woods where the Shyguys and Yoshis live
4. Toad Harbor
Not sure how rainbow road is the 1st one.
It was a disappointing.
I feel the only thing going for it is the part where you go into the space station thing. Other than that, just a generic, boring race track like 90% of the new courses in the game. (which is weird, because all the retro tracks have been updated wonderfully)
But for the other 3 positions, I agree. They provide something unique and are interesting enough to keep one engaged.
I've just started playing MK8 on Wii U and there are so many tracks! I haven't really played an MK game since DD. There are quite a few I like visually, but haven't found one I like more than another yet. It's weird and great seeing the SNES Donut Plains 3 in the MK8 engine. I still love Baby Park from DD too
Wario's Gold Mine is my favourite, which I find quite strange as it was one of my least favourites on MKWii.Grumble Volcano I hated on Wii but I hate it possibly even more on MK8.There are not many guarantees in life but one of them is that I will screw up on Grumble Volcano and finish in the bottom half every single time. It's still not my least favourite course on MK8 though, that honour has to go to Cheese Land.Just like Grumble Volcano,I am guaranteed to mess up at least one lap on that damn track.
My MK8 top 5
1.Wario's Gold Mine
2.Electrodome
3.GBA Mario Circuit
4.Moo Moo Meadows
5.Donut Plains 3
@Gridatttack I kinda felt like some of the tracks were boring when I first played the game, but I've mostly gotten over it and grown to like them, although the Mushroom Cup is still pretty meh.
Mount Wario was robbed!
These people have horrible taste! 8's Rainbow Road is the worst in the series. Bland, just like most of the base game tracks.
I really like the excitebike track.
It's actually one of my least favorite Rainbow Roads, but to each their own. I love the other three, especially Mount Wario.
@LiberatedAnimal This is it! Right on
The Bowsers Castle in Mk8 is the best one to date. What a visually impressive course. I also love Rainbow Road (SNES) for time trials
Yeah I like the excite bike track plus the other 3 tracks with excite bike are my favs
I actually love Neo Bowser City once I learned how to drift properly on it. It is so beautiful, too!
I really like Sherbet Land. I love winter themed tracks and I love the music that goes with it.
But my favorite is Animal Crossing. Not challenging at all, but it is beautiful to look at. The detail in every facet of that track, from the seasons, to the bug sound effects, to driving on the beach and seeing familiar faces... I absolutely love it.
1. Excite Bike
2. Toad Harbor
3. Mount Wario
4. Yoshi Valley
I like the chaos of Baby Park
Rainbow Road actually is my favourite track in the game. And my favourite Rainbow Road ever. Nothing in particular about it, I just really enjoy racing on it and I usually do pretty well.
Mount Wario is pretty fun but the other two I'm not all that keen on.
Yoshi circuit.
DS Wario Stadium
Wild Woods
Big Blue
I think those are my favorites, but honestly I love nearly every track in the game.
Big Blue
Cloudtop Cruise
Toad Harbour
Electrodome
Honorable mention: Baby Park XD
Big Blue.. I just love F-Zero and its music. And the way they've made that tune Mariokart-ish it's just great. Toad Harbour is gives you somehow happy feeling, Cloudtop Cruise I've always liked aaand Electrodome is something what is... very Mariokart-ish track.
Rainbow Road. Esp newest. Is. Awful.
What the....? I demand a recount.
I kind of wish they would remake the 3DS rainbow road, it's one of my favorites!
I usually love the Rainbow Roads in MK games, but I wasn't keen on the new one, since I could never stay on the track. My favourite MK8 track is Rainbow Road N64, it's so pretty and colourful. Shy Guy Falls, Electrodrome, Mount Wario, Tick Tock Clock, Grumble Volcano, Excitebike, and Wario's Gold Mine are also big favourites of mine.
Grumble Volcano and Bowser's Castle are tied for my favorites in the game.
MOO MOO MEADOWS FOREVER!!!!!
I love the SNES and 64 Rainbow Road, Hyrule Castle, both F-Zero tracks, and Excitebike. All of those just equal happiness and relaxation.
@skwiddly Grumble Volcano debuted in Mario Kart Wii. It's my favorite track as well
Baby Park all day every day
It's too soon for me to pick a favourite. Although Mount Wario and Electrodome are pretty awesome.
Bowsers castle is perhaps my favourite in the series, and I do better at it. Rainbow road really is a bit of a disappointment though, which is a shame. And it's especially an anti climax given all that precedes it
I gotta go with Sunshine Airport, Mount Wario, and Wild Woods.
All of the Rainbow Roads in all of the Mario Kart games are my favourites. Although, the Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing DLC courses are pretty high up on my favourites list too!
Hhmm. The Hyrule track is a fun novelty but I always thought it terms of actual track it was pretty boring.
But on the flip side, Excite Bike is one of my favourites and that's just an oval with semi-randomly placed ramps and puddles.
Big Blue and Wild Woods would also be top choices.
My Top 4 :
1. Rainbow Road (Space Station)
OMG... The Most Futuristic and Beautiful Tracks ever. And the Best Rainbow Road Music ever !
2. Big Blue
OMG... The Futurism, Anti Gravity , Blue Color & Rock Jazz music = Awesome !
3. Ribbon Road
Oh My Heavenly Lord....! The Most Insane Remake ever. Too Good to be true. The Remake looks 10000% even better than GBA version.
4. Baby Park
GOSH... Disneyland version of Mario Kart in HD ?! Looks even better than Gamecube version.
Mount Wario has always been my favourite. The final third is a real thrill, and I tend to love sprint-style races more than laps.
I'd say my favorites are:
1. Mount Wario (It's an extremely dynamic track with so many awesome sections. There isn't a part of the track that feels dull, from start to finish.)
2. N64 Rainbow Road (My favorite out of the three Rainbow Roads because of its great atmosphere, big jump at the beginning, and tricky section near the end.)
3. Shy Guy Falls (Such an underrated track! It's actually so well-made, and the waterfall sections are just so fun!)
4. Sunshine Airport (The multiple paths, loads of ramps, and great gliding section just make this track so enjoyable!)
Animal Crossing track always makes me smile when it comes up online. Would be very happy if that's how the new AC looks.
1.Mount Wario
2.Wild Woods
3.Animal Crossing
4.Hyrule Castle
Piranha plant slide is my fav, music and all
SNES Rainbow Road
Nothing comes close.
Rainbow road will always be great, though I do enjoy Mount Wario along with Hyrule Castle
All 4 are also in the original!
5. Electrodrome
4. Cloudtop Cruise
3. Mount Wario
2. Toad Harbor
1. Ribbon Road
I am not surprised, Rainbow Road has always been a favourite, just not mine. In fact I would rate it my least favourite.
Wild Woods or one of the other water tracks I would place top of the list.
@AndrewJ I am with you on Big Blue. Mute City is pretty awesome also.
Really?
Boy, the common people are weird...
....and in 2nd place after SNES Rainbow Road?
Clue: it's on the cover of MK8D. Love dem fireworks.
