The Japanese market sometimes has a more long-term approach to building up major releases, which helps explain why Nintendo's YouTube channel for the country has gone big with an overview trailer for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It's the next big first-party Nintendo Switch game but isn't actually out until late April - nevertheless a delicious near-six minutes of footage shows familiar and new parts of the game.
The highlight is probably the Shine Thief mode, something that's been so in-demand that it was one of the most widespread hoaxes pre-E3 for Mario Kart 8 DLC back in the day. Nintendo, perhaps, was listening. In general the Battle Mode segment is perhaps the most interesting, as we get a look at a few neat stages and mode configurations.
Beyond that there's just a lot of footage, and it's looking like - well - Mario Kart. And that's a wonderful thing. Are you planning to pick this up on Switch on 28th April?

I got this on WiiU, but I'm absolutely double dipping. Battle mode is something that I've always enjoyed with friends, especially on the N64. I'm curious to see what that Phiranha Plant mode was, it looked like some sort of Pac-Man-esque game which seems like fun
Shine Thief? I've been more of a fan of Shine Run (provided that is the mode's English name) from Mario Kart DS, but a comeback from a Double Dash!! battle mode is also nice.
I'm not double dipping, i love MK8, one of my favorites on wii u but not going to throw chash for the same game, even with new battle mode, better spend it in a new game!
Battle mode hasn't interested me since the N64. I don't think I can justify MK8D unless there's 32 new racing tracks
Wait a sec... if Splatoon gets a racetrack aside from the battle mode arena, does that mean new tracks?
Because there's another Mario Kart game that could use some more justice...
@AlexSora89 If not, hopefully we'll get some more Mario Kart DLC goodness. The first batch was definitely value for money.
Please let there be a Daisy amiibo suit!!!
Depends on price of game and whether I have any other commitments that month. Of course this is one of those games where Joycon 2-player on the go can really shine.
@Danpal65
True dat. Hyrule Circuit and all that was surely nice, but let's be honest, they had me at GBA Cheese Land and GBA Ribbon Road.
After the equality we had seen in the Mario Kart DS retro tracks, the Super Circuit representation was basically phased out game after game, culminating in a whopping grand total of one GBA track in Mario Kart 7, GBA Bowser Castle 1.
Which made me that much happier to see more GBA love in 8's DLC. That alone is worth the season pass and, by extension, a double dip for this port.
There are so many genius tracks in Super Circuit. Aside from one of my most loved, if not my most loved period, Rainbow Road iterations, there's just so much good stuff in there. Cheep Cheep Island. Sunset Wilds. Snow Land. Riverside Park, or, even better, Lakeside Park. Yoshi Desert. Broken Pier.
Instead, it seems only the other MK games are getting all the love. Which is just flat-out unfair.
Remember people! This is a better game that you can take on the GO. This is the game you'll want to play on the go.
Lol I can't believe people are actually planning to fork over another 60 bucks for the same game.
I love Mario kart but this will be the only one I won't get
I have Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U and have played it for hundreds of hours. But I will be getting this for Switch on Day 1.
The new battle modes look awesome and 8 player LAN (we have 6 Switch in the house) will be fantastic.
@Yasume but it's a new hat!
(Simpsons reference)
@Yasume I guess I can just look beyond that and consider the value of enjoying the game anywhere, plus battle mode, to be worth getting it on the Switch. But, to each their own, $60 for something you already have a version of is definitely a reason to not get it if you don't consider it value
For one reason or another I hadn't played Mario Kart 8 on my Wii U for well over a year..... To avoid recent temptation I actually traded it in last Friday and put the funds towards Bomberman for the switch
Again for one reason or another I'd never got round to buying the DLC either so in short I will definitely be picking this up on 28th April as (for me at least) there will be plenty of new content
There was some music about halfway in the video I didn't recognise. Could be from one of the new battle mode arenas, or it could be from new tracks!!
I don't remember the Inkling girl costume being in the original MK8... so... hopefully there's more new amiibo costumes on the way, too?
I know it's such a minor thing, but I liked dressing up my Mii as a chubby, washed-up Captain Falcon enough for it to become my main online character/kart combo.
@Yasume Not everybody owned a Wii U? As somebody who -did-, the portability, and the fact I'll finally be able to play it online with friends who skipped out on a Wii U, are definitely swaying me towards picking this up again. I mean, I get your point, it's silly to spend £50 on a game -again-; but given the improvements to the overall package, including what looks to be glorious 60fps 4-player splitscreen, it's not a bad idea if you're gonna be getting use out of the new features.
Besides, the original MK8 held its trade-in value pretty well, so selling -that- to get a decent discount off of this version is also an option.
I can't wait for this.......I had it on the WiiU (inc DLC's) but had to sell my WiiU console about a year ago when I needed some dosh. The prospect of having this game again and being able to play it anywhere means I have no qualms about double-dipping at all!!
Bring it on!!!!
It simply can't come soon enough. I can't wait to take this on the go for some sweet local multiplayer action.
I just want to know what extra amiibo figures I'll need in order to unlock all of the suits (I've stopped collecting amiibo some time ago, and I've been meaning to restart my collection).
And I hope that all of the content will be unlocked from the start. I don't want to go on an X hour grind with the sole intent of unlocking everything again.
@UK-Nintendo same here.
It would take every track in the history of the franchise for me to want to buy MK8 twice
I don't have have a switch, but I'll definitely buy MK8 Deluxe, I mean yea practically repurchase when I do get one. But that's fine the game is amazing and added modes look great, but be able take MK8 to work, trips, etc, will be awesome.
You're playing MK8DX on the train. The passenger sat next to you is bored.
You offer them a joycon and throw down there and then
You've either made a new friend or pulled.
Battle arenas! Why did they remove them in 8
So many people using "double dipping" incorrectly. It's Nintendo who is double dipping, not the consumer.
I can't wait for this. I randomly play MK8 every few months but the sooner I can pack up my wiiu, the better.
This version will get much more use for me too as someone who frequents conventions with friends (who all have switches and will be getting this too).
I just hope they have online ready by the end of april.
@Yasume anytime, anywhere, with anyone. cash me ousside
there was a shortcut thru that waterfall all along?!?!?!?! DAMMIT!!!!
3 years ago Nintendo provided me with my most favourite game ever. And they chucked in a FREE DOWNLOAD of another game with it.
They've now taken that game and probably made it even better. Plus provided the opportunity for me to take it anywhere with me.
I think I can probably stretch to buying this version.
When I leave the house, I am working, running, biking, kayaking, fishing, hunting or some other outside activity that is not conducive to playing video games.
If something does comes up, I have my trusty 3DS XL and MK7. No need to spend another $60 on the same game I alreay own.
Anyone know if it will be possible to have local multiplayer with two (or more) people on each Switch? For example four player game with two players on each Switch? Thanks.
Yay...Amiibo is return !
Mii players are confirmed too !
Gotta Double Dip this game.

I'm just hoping that this doesn't give Nintendo an excuse not to make MK9
Zero chance I'm paying full price without new tracks. I love MK8...I think it was Nintendo's only franchise that was taken to the next level on WiiU. But I'm not encouraging companies to resell the same game with little new content. There is a market for it though..and Nintendo knows it could put Mario Kart EIGHT on the box and it would be enough for some fans.
I'm going to pass. I would have considered a rebuy if they added 2 or 4 cups.
The other deluxe
capture screen
Okay... 8 battle courses is good, but let's hope we got more in DLC! The Wii selection was incredible.
No I am not!!! Nintendo ripped the Wii u buyers of!!! Now they want me to buy a new system and pay for the game again to play the game as it should have been in the first place.
@Alexprime Not all of us NEED to play a game on the go, or have the opportunity to.
Already have it preordered and paid for.
@UK-Nintendo
Out of those, I never played Super Circuit on GBA
I own it and all the DLC on Wii U so excuse me if I don't feel like giving Nintendo another €60 for essentially the same game except for the fixed Battle Mode, which they could and should have done on Wii U.
@Xaessya please don't. It's the worse one.
I just hope they keep the online servers running for Mario kart 8 on Wii u.
And give a big discount to those that bought it on the Wii u by seeing the nnid purchase of dlc pack 1+ 2
@SLIGEACH_EIRE No one is telling you to buy it. It's just there for the majority of consumers that didn't buy a Wii U. It's an option and nothing more.
I personally think they should port over all their Wii U games for consumers. I'd definitely be willing to buy them again just to have them on the Switch instead of the Wii U. I mean, what other games are there to buy anyway?
How does 4:25 get rounded up to six minutes?
Looks nice but not enough for me to double dip without an extensive friend list.
This is obviously aimed at the millions who don't own the Wii u version. I think we'll see a lot of Wii u games on Switch. Why not? These games deserve a platform that can infiltrate the market.
@jswhitfield8 battle mode. Specifically battle arenas. When Nintendo realize that it wasn't going to sell enough Wii u, they did not finish Mario Kart 8, they left out battle arenas and proper battle modes on purpose to save money and then which became well we will sell the whole game and call it Mario Kart Deluxe on the new system. Now if Nintendo with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is released issues a coupon for current Mario Kart 8 players than that would make me a little happier but it's not my fault the Wii U failed? In fact it is Nintendo's fault that the Wii U fail I just feel like that this double dipping is screwing the customers. Now granted I will probably buy a switch in the late summer and will probably buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but it does not make me feel any better about it that it is a bad value to essentially get the same exact game that are already paid for full price I might add.
This also goes for Splatoon 2.... all indications is that it is a revised splatune not a new game.
I understand why Nintendo is doing this trying to save their console business and I do realize there is a lot of people that have not played these two games because they never bought a Wii U but again why don't they issue a coupon for the previous generation players? Even just a little token? They have to realize that a lot of players are feeling let down by Nintendo..
Do you get where I'm coming from? Or do you think I'm way off base?
@Mart1ndo yes but don't think current Wii U owners that bought and paid for these games a couple of years ago don't they deserve a discount? It is essentially the same game comma I am not against them bringing them out I am just kind of pissed that the loyal fans that bought the Wii U are the ones that get screwed and are left holding the bag.
@UK-Nintendo why do you feel this way? Super Circuit is great.
@Danrenfroe2016 totally agree with your comment #55
Super circuit was good at the time, don't get me wrong it's still Mario kart but it's definitely my worse mario kart
Sold my Wii U copy and put the money toward Deluxe. Mainly because of the portability, but also looking forward to trying out the new battle mode, which was the one real flaw in the original.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Good thing you're not obligated to buy every Nintendo game, huh?
Looks fun but I just hope MK9 is in development and is going to release either later this year or next year.
@UK-Nintendo The PAL Mario Kart 64 box is strange looking haha. Nice collection though!
@Gobelee 👍🏻
@jswhitfield8 I think it sold over 8 million.
@Danrenfroe2016
I've a Wii u, I bought most of the first party games. It doesn't bother me because I don't think I'm going to buy a Switch. It's not for me. It'll be the first Nintendo I haven't bought since the NES. Don't get me wrong I really want it to succeed.
Why would anyone want the same game twice?
@jswhitfield8 I think they should offer a loyalty discount because it is literally the same game all they are adding is just a few little touches and then they are adding the battle arenas that should have already been in the Wii U version to begin with.
And I don't mean to say that Mario Kart 8 fail, but in the grand scheme of things the Wii you failed miserably and Mario Kart 8 could have sold a lot more copies if the Wii U had not failed miserably.
they really should add some more tracks. the dlc worked a treat and breathed new life in to the game on wiiu. i cant justify buying it just for the battle mode and new characters. give me four more cups and im in.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE well that is completely your choice. But for anyone wanting to play online, the Wii U version will only get more barren.
For me, I'll be grabbing it for the additions and on the go gaming. Perfect for those of us who have kids!
@Danrenfroe2016 Wait, how are "all indications" pointing to Splatoon 2 being a revised port?
-New singleplayer campaign
-Expanded customization options
-New gear
-New weapons
-Entirely new specials
-New hub
-New modes
-New maps
-Local multiplayer
What about that says "revised port"? That's a full on sequel.
Clearly, this is more geared towards the people who skipped the Wii U... but I'm excited for it anyway. The battle modes and map look great and will be a ton of fun. Having a console-quality Mario Kart on the go will be awesome!
Totally going to double-dip. Might end up giving my Wii U copy to someone or just trading it in.
@gcunit I forgot about this. The Wii U purchase was good value with Club Nintendo.
@Mart1ndo yes and there lies the issue at least for ten million people what is the reason to buy a switch? Hopefully they will come up with some new great software I am like you, I am going to wait a while I will get a switch but it will be a while.
If some new compelling software comes out will you buy a switch to?
@IceClimbers I don't know it looks pretty identical to Splatoon on the Wii U in the trailers.
I really hope you're right because I really like Splatoon
@gcunit Finally. Someone's positive for once. Thank you.
Seriously baffles me everyone's being so negative with this game. It looks great. And I've played the heck out of 8. I play it still every Thursday with some forum buddies. And we're all getting this updated version too.
@SuperTeeter64 #fistbump
I am the owner of the original title called Mario Kart 8, released on the Wii U console in 2013. I also own all of the downloadable content (DLC) on the Wii U console, which came out in two different occasions. All of this said, pardon me as I have not deemed it necessary to give Nintendo Co. Ltd. $59.99 USD for what I am seeing to be the same video entertainment. I do understand that the battle mode in this game is superior to the original, but I feel like they should not have changed the battle mode in the last title and they most certainly could have not changed it. All of that said, I am boycotting this "new" release simply out of principal.
@SLIGEACH_famicom good for you pal
I wish consumers were more concerned with consumer interests than with corporate
I swear, if there is a Mission Mode in this game, I will be all over it!
@Yasume
Lol I can't believe people are actually planning to fork over another 60 bucks for the same game
Well, believe it.
People have no problem paying for an extra copy of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on handheld, or Yoshis Wooly World, or Mario Maker, or Smash Bros. Most of which have either no online or missing features, and all of which are in standard definition and only one of those has a save transfer function and even it is a bumbling mess of a workaround.
People see the option to buy the game and not only get a better version of it in 1080p, but also a console-quality vHD handheld version to play anywhere? And a brand new battle mode that Wii U owners can only wish they had?
The question at this point is why wouldn't a person buy this game. After five years of buying completely separate handheld standard definition versions of games with no online this is the first time in years a handheld version is worth buying. That table top mode with two controllers anywhere is priceless
edit
Not to mention, anyone who bought the Wii U version can sell it or trade it in and knock half the price off right out the gate. So then it's $30 extra for a better console version with HD handheld version included that has full online and added features and no save transfers needed... seems a far better deal than buying a $40 SD 3DS release.
@Danrenfroe2016
"think they should offer a loyalty discount"
Take your Wii U copy, trade it in toward Switch version... there's your loyalty discount.
I never got a Wii U but I have a Switch so I'm definitely picking this and Splatoon 2 up when they release.
One thing that I found annoying with the online on MK8 on Wii U, is that the lobbies were separated because of the DLC and not everyone got the DLC. So, if I wanted to play on the lobby with all 48 races that could potentially be picked, those lobbies were often a bit barren compared to the others. But with MK8 deluxe, this won't be an issue.
Not only that, but from that trailer, Nintendo did a lot of good improvements! And on the Switch I can play anytime, anywhere with anyone
I was really critical of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at first but I'm beginning to consider double dipping. It's an amazing game.
Might trade in my Wii U version.
