TowerFall developer Matt Thorson has revealed that his latest project - described as a "Hardcore Mountain Climbing Platformer" - is coming to the Nintendo Switch this year.
Celeste may be billed as "a game about climbing a mountain", but as you can see from the trailer above, things get pretty intense at times. Your character can perform superhuman leaps and deft wall-jumps, and it's not just long falls and sharp objects that get in your way - the trailer shows a sinister doppelganger and a scary floating head, just two of what we assume will be many enemies in the game. Thankfully you won't be alone, as Celeste is shown conversing with NPCs at certain points, too.
It all looks pretty great, and is yet another potential indie classic for the Switch library. Let us know what you think by posting a comment.

Feels like there's lots of games just like this at the moment. Still, the more games the better. Will check it out when it launches.
Towerfall is fantastic, so I'm up for this!
I like Towerfall, great laughs in multiplayer so I have real high hopes for this. Just hope I don't end up breaking the Switch if ever played on the go
I always have room for another good platformer.
Good luck playing this without a pro controller. This looks like it really does need tight controls. It's another game that won't be playable on the go as no D-PAD.
I won't be buying it unless I have the pro controller also.
Looks great! I also appreciate the "slow" start for the Switch lineup. Maybe I'll actually have the time to finish some of the games!!!
Good luck to them.
I have a 3DS, I don't need these pixels on my Switch. Looks well made, but not my type of game particularly, and I can't bring myself to pay more than £2 for a retro styled game unless under exceptional circumstances (e.g. Shovel Knight, Undertale).
looks amazing ! and fun .. ill buy for sure ... but yet still no AAA games ? only indie's games and 99.9% of them made with pixels
i need real games for switch
@gcunit shovel knight is the best pixel retro style game ever made !!!
@gcunit
But... but... Towerfall is critically acclaimed! 87 on the ole MC.
I feel you though. Not a huge fan of pixel games myself, with rare exceptions of course. But this could be a really good game (maybe one of those exceptions...???)
you kids these days have it easy. back in my day we used to climb mountains with our bare feet, and we didnt have any achievements to unlock but all the dirt and boulders getting stuck in our @***s from falling down with no traction of having bare feet
@JaxonH I'm not overly familiar with Towerfall, I'll check it out.
If this was actually climbing a mountain I'd be more interested, but it's just same old platformy styled levels with an underlying theme of ascending a mountain.
@ogo79
And there was no climbing down either, right? It was an uphill climb, both ways I'm sure 😉
@gcunit
Honestly, this does look like one retro indie I'll make an exception for. It reminds me so much of.... Super Meat Boy. Only, a much more appealing premise (climbing perilous mountain seems much cooler than a red block getting sawed into ground beef). And with a developer behind it with pedigree, I have no doubt it'll play as good as it looks... better even.
Wait, weren't they working on something else that sounded just like that?
...Oh, it's coming to the PS4 as well. Huh. Well, I did like Towerfall.
@JaxonH Yep, at first glance Towerfall looks the better game, I'll add to my backlog wishlist, though I don't get many opportunities to play multiplayer so I probably won't get the best out of it.
@JaxonH
yes. it was uphill both ways. back then mountains had no downs on them.
we kept climbing up and we never looked back.
i mean we never looked down...
yes down.
we never looked down because there was no down
Towerfall is an incredible game, so I'll absolutely pick this one up. I wish that Towerfall would come to the Switch as well. Given that Nintendo's pushing the local multiplayer aspect of the Switch a lot, Towerfall would be an incredible addition to the system's library.
Will probably buy on PS4 as need that D-pad
@kobashi100 Lucky the pro controller has one, so this is a game I'll be looking to play on Switch.
Might be fun, but I'd need to see the reviews before getting this one.
Yikes, the spikes alone look like a greeting from VVVVVV. Seems like another game to leave many teeth marks on many controllers, but pretty charming in other aspects as well.
Meanwhile, comments buzz with D-pad nostalgia again. Guys, Vita has one - but I've done two full playthroughs and V'd a few time trials in the aforementioned VVVVVV while using nothing but the left analogue stick for movement. And you're making me feel like a heretic here. XD
Oh man, so many cool games.
Loved TowerFall. To think this developer started out on the Ouya.
Same dev that created Towerfall? Yuck. (Probably) won't be getting this.
@Ralizah What is your dislike with TowerFall if I may ask? I'm not planning to provide a counterargument, just curious.
I'm not too fond of pixel games usually, due to liking modern graphics a tiny bit too much, but this looks fantastic! Gonna get it on the day it releases
I saw this and I thought that it was a reboot of Ice Climber. You've had such a long time to remake Ice Climber, Nintendo!
I may pick up Celeste at some point, but the Indies are stacking up and I'm on a budget.
@LemonSlice Terrible sprite art. Monotonous gameplay that loses its appeal quickly. Not a huge fan of the local multiplayer only approach. And I'm not a fan of the dev for reasons I won't get into.
I look forward to the seemingly impossible Speedrun on some future GDQ.
This game looks fantastic! Hopefully it's not too easy to complete
@Ralizah "And I'm not a fan of the dev for reasons I won't get into."
I threw a glance at his persona, and I feel you don't like him for the same reasons I wouldn't either. It's a shame that when you get down to it, most of game developers are unlikeable. There are still many though that I respect even after learning a lot about them, especially among the Japanese.
Oh my gosh, how did I not hear about this game sooner?! I've played the SmileBASIC port of the original PICO-8 version of this, and I absolutely love it! This game will be an instant purchase for me!
@LemonSlice I've noticed a lot of Western indie devs can be intolerable human beings (at least, based on interviews and whatnot), which is why I generally try to learn as little about them on a personal level as possible.
So wait there is ice and she is climbing. You know...
Nintendo is going to take publishing rights, team up with Thorson, tweak and release this as Ice Climbers: Hyper Drift.
Or...not.
XD
We need a new Ice Climbers game, just like lots of other "forgotten" Nintendo ips
Celeste might be the best game for SmileBasic on 3ds. Its almost as good as an Eshop release. Im looking forward to a Switch version. Highly recommend this to anyone who likes a platforming challenge
Looks great, the controls seem really precise. I'll be checking this out day one.
Looks great. I hope they'll bring Towerfall to Switch at some point as well. I love that game and was sad to not see it on Wii U.
I really think they should've had some kind of a d-pad attachment for the d-buttons on the left Joy-Con. Maybe attachable by a magnet, like the swappable parts in the Xbox One Elite Controller.
Ah, maybe it won't be that bad playing these types of games with the stick.. :--3
The music is horrible IMAO, but the game looks rather fun!
I am missing the part where you are supposed to climb a mountain.
It looks like an average pixel platformer with horrible sound fx and music
Looks great, loved towerfall on the ouya , another purchase for me
I love pretty pixel art games and this one could be interesting. I just hope the levels look more naturalistic in the release version and that Towerfall itself comes to Switch. That sounds like a perfect kind of local co-op game for the system.
Wow, aside from the portraits when she's in a conversation with someone, those graphics really suck! There are NES games that look better than this!
Anyway, this is clearly one of those expert platforming challenges, so that's a definite "no" from me even if the graphics were good.
@ogo79 you just reminded me of a Boulder Dash
Looks like several other games I've seen.
@BulbasaurusRex Yeah your right.
@BulbasaurusRex Yeah your right. I mean, Ice Climbers and Q-Bert are old and far prettier.
@Tempestryke I said there ARE NES games that look better, not all of them. Although, "Ice Climber" is about on par with it, whereas something like "Kirby's Adventure" far surpasses it. It's pretty sad when a game released in 2017 looks like it was made in the late 80's for the most part.
Very simple graphics, but looks interesting.
Ooo, I'm game.
@KIRO
sorry about that
@ogo79
Lol - no! I adored the game on the old Spectrum 48k
