Footage of what appears to be the Nintendo Switch developer options menu has appeared in a leaked and unedited Portuguese commercial for the console.
The footage shows actors playing various Switch games, but at certain points the console is on-screen with its dev menu interface showing. This is because the commercial is largely "raw" live footage, and in the final version, video of each game will be superimposed over the console'sscreen, hiding these details.
If you're really keen to see the screens, the timestamps here as follows:
Interestingly, one of the shots indicates that the Switch used in the commercial has 64GB of on-board storage - this could be the amount of memory developer or debug units come with.
Some have expressed doubts about the validity of this video, claiming that the dev screens could easily be faked, but the fact that the commercial is all-new would make this unlikely - a more probable scenario is that this unfinished commercial has somehow leaked out before all of the appropriate game footage has been edited in.
UPDATE: Mere minutes after we posted this story, Nintendo released the final version of the video in question. You can clearly see where the final game footage has been edited in.
That aside, what do you make of this promotional footage? Do you think it does a good job of "selling" the core concept of the Switch and its software?
Thanks to Gonçalo Lopes for the tip!

Oops!
Interesting. I wonder how this was leaked?
A developer interface leaks during a commercial?!
That must be the work of...
No harm done really. I doubt this was a mistake.
Edit: On second thoughts I now see what went wrong. It also shows the people all faked their enjoyment and experience, they are actors I suppose.
aside from debug, those all look like options that a user should have access to.
That model has 64GB internal storage, interesting
Why would the machine even be powered on during filming of an ad?
@Shiryu will love this! Lol
Wait.. it has "Reboot"? Now if they're talking about the late 90s/early 2000's CGI television show Reboot we might be talking!!
@Skunkfish Good spot, though it's likely just a developer version & not final hardware. Maybe they increased the speed of the internal memory & cut down the amount after this version was released?
@cfgk24 Guess who sent in the tip...
@AlexSora89
Indeed !
FAIRY GODPARENTS !! XD
Oops indeed! Can't view the video anymore.
I'm curious about what the 'Tandem' application could be... could be another game that they haven't announced yet.
The video is already gone. Nintendo acts quicker than Hollywood for that Mummy trailer without music.
I mean how much more would it really cost to add 32GB to every unit? The difference in prices of 32GB and 64GB microSD cards is like 5 to 10 dollars. Even if this is just a dev unit where they toyed with the possibility of a 64GB model only to settle on a standard 32GB model, why not offer a larger storage space version and charge a little more for it? $10 more for a 64GB model or $25 more for a 128GB model. ultimately not a big deal given how affordable micro sd cards are, it'd just be nice if they did offered versions with more built in storage space.
Waterproof joycons confirmed?
The original video was removed... can someone re-upload or post another link to the video?
"This is because the commercial is largely "raw" live footage, and in the final version, video of each game will be superimposed over the console'sscreen, hiding these details"
So they still can't show "live" gameplay? What the....?!
Well, looks like they just killed the video. Although I still find the whole thing very suspicious, this makes me lean more towards thinking it could be real.
@duffmmann Not much, but how much are Apple charging between a 32GB iPhone and a 64GB one?
Ohhh SOMEBODY'S IN TROUBLE!!
Lol.. It's the internet. Stuff like this happens offen. Core gamers know what's going on. But casuals will look right past it unless explained to them. No harm done..
Ha Video dead, therefore was real, so...Christmas special 64GB version do you reckon?
@DanteSolablood Not really a good spot, since the 64GB was already mentioned in the article itself, so it's not much of an additional discovery...
@duffmmann Well, we also need to remember than Nintendo needs to pay/invest in the hardware long before they see a single penny back & aren't made of money like they were a few years back. It might be $10 for a unit, but that's an extra $20m they need to spend before they even ship to stores.
This isn't a defense of Nintendo skimping on internal memory AT ALL... but there are reasons, even if they're bad ones.
@ThanosReXXX I was merely being a gentleman... unlike someone picking up on other's mistakes.
@Skunkfish Well when has Apple not bent you over and your wallet? They run on the idea of charging far too much for what you get because they're proprietary and that somehow means they're better I guess is what they want you to think.
@Shiryu I should have known - I should have known. . . .
@duffmmann Common practice though. What's the price difference between a 500GB hard drive and 1TB drive? And last gen, Sony/Microsoft shipped consoles with smaller hard drives that potentially cost more for them to make than the larger sizes.
@DanteSolablood @duffmmann You just said how affordable micro sd cards are these days! Well, Nintendo don't need to give/charge us for huge amounts of storage because they gave each Switch owner the choice of how much storage and how much they want to pay for it! Pretty smart move tbh.
Dante - correct - there is millions and millions of dollars of research and upfront manufacturing costs to -take into consideration - all as the technology rolls ever onward - we should thank Nintendo for their efforts and investments that give us a fantastic gaming lifestyle!
@cfgk24 Yes...that's literally what I was saying... I was just saying it'd be nice to have an option that has more built in storage. Right now the largest commercially available micro sd cards are 256GB, eventually they'll get up to 2TB, but it will be a while. It might be nice if in addition to that 256GB we could also have 128 or so extra GBs, instead of only 32 extra GBs.
@Skunkfish Its common, but no one you as badly as Apple does. They literally charge $100 more for a 64GB model over a 32GB model, no one else charges you that much more for only 32GB of more storage, don't kid yourself.
@DanteSolablood It wasn't meant as bashing, just stating facts. I also didn't see it as a mistake, but more like stating the obvious, since it's already in the article, so he literally discovered nothing new. It's almost the same as seeing 20+ comments saying the exact same thing in a thread that has more than 100 comments. I think that in general, it's due to people just watching the videos or only reading the article half-heartedly in their haste to make a comment underneath it...
And not to be rude, but how does giving people credit for something that has already been said translate to being a gentleman?
Even being my nicest self, I would still reply to that with something like: "yeah, I saw that being mentioned in the article already", to subtly let them know that the info was already there in the first place...
Portuguese here hahaha
@duffmmann FYI, our profanity filter doesn't like the r-word so please could you stop using it? Thanks.
@duffmmann I agree with you and it could easily have been 64GB without all too much of an extra cost to the entire manufacturing process, but I also think that for people that are opting for physical games only, that 32GB will actually last them for quite some time, so the people that are most vocal in this respect are probably the ones that want to download all their games instead of buying them in stores.
@gcunit In my opinion there really isn't a better word to explain what Apple so often gets away with
@ThanosReXXX I was joking sir! I do that sometimes. Remember the secret bro-code of the winky face?
@DanteSolablood Aw man, my bad. Bit of a hectic day over here, I'm kinda beat...
@duffmmann How about "screws you over"?
Just be creative with it...
@ThanosReXXX No worries, I've done that too. It's easy to get defensive on the NL comments nowadays. Not sure what could be causing all this fuss... <-winky face.
@DanteSolablood Nintendo and all of their "bad" decisions, obviously...
@ThanosReXXX see, but that's just needlessly adding extra words, I like to be succinct.
@duffmmann True, but since we just can't use some words, we actually do have to be creative. And believe me, I've been on your end of the equation multiple times myself every now and then, so I had to learn that myself as well...
@duffmmann with Apple the deal is voluntary, no? Consent is given by the customer.
@gcunit Not if you're drunk when you buy your iPhone
@duffmmann Because then they'd have to put a 3 where the two is on their shelf price.
@Henmii It's not that they can't, it's that they rightfully don't want to. When you have the consoles actually play games and use that footage in the commercial, there'll be fingerprints, glare, washed out colors, et cetera.
This is done for all phone/tablet/notebook/handheld commercials. By adding in the screen in post-production, you can truly show it off and don't have to worry about viewing angles, glare and all of that stuff.
Portuguese people...always drinking too much on the night before...ahah típico!
Thats a big oops! lol Obviously clear that game footage is edited in later. Still, interesting seeing what the development interface looks like.
@Ledgendt Nah, realistically, if they made a 128GB model, they could sell it at probably $25-50 more than the standard 32GB model, unless they wanted to be like Apple and price gouge you for only a (relatively) small amount of extra storage.
@duffmmann Actually quite a bit of money. The drive in the Switch is a solid state, those are generally much more expensive than a disk drive (though much faster).
Actually, it would really depend on how good of a deal they could get on larger solid state drives (that's debatable especially since it's not like they are in a good position to negotiate with larger "partners"). As an aside, size might be an issue. I have a solid state in my laptop but that's a device that's actually thicker than the Switch itself.
Also, everyone clamouring for a HDD rather than a SSD, that would contribute considerably to the size and weight of the Switch itself (to the point where it wouldn't really be "portable" anymore). Putting it into the base doesn't make much sense either since you wouldn't be able to access it while playing it as a portable.
Regarding the 64Gb memory, how about a third scenario (asides dev devices just have more space (most likely), or this indicating a future higher-capacity SKU): that all Switches internally contain 64Gb storage, but 32Gb is reserved by the system for the operating system, firmware, and system updates. This would mean that the advertised 32Gb is entirely usable to the player, rather than the usual situation where a chunk is taken by the OS etc. Not saying I think this is particularly likely, but it'd be cool if it were the case.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I commend you good sir. You are one of the most dedicated, consistent trolls on the internet today. And that's no easy feat. You must love what you do. Never change.
@Ernest_The_Crab @Ernest_The_Crab Considering a 2TB Xbox One is only about $100 more than a 1TB Xbox One, I highly doubt that that a 128GB Switch would cost more than $50 more than a 32GB Switch. Unless they just wanted to max out on profits and screw ya over in a similar Apple fashion.
@duffmmann You're comparing using that of a standard HDD to an SSD (not to mention a HDD that's been proven to be slower than most PC based HDDs). If they really wanted to nickel and dime us directly they could have taken the Vita route where there's only pricey proprietary options.
That being said, I doubt that the "storage" space was ever really intended to be used for games otherwise they would have emphasized that more. It's main purpose is most likely for the console operating system and updates to ensure that the console runs fast. They didn't use a smaller size most likely cause no manufacturer would offer such a small size at an affordable cost so they opted for a larger one and allowed people to save/download to it (being a secondary purpose).
@Trickbaby14 You're welcome.
@duffmmann But the cost between those drive is more like $20, so they're taking $80 out of that as pure profit.
If Nintendo did the same multiplied the cost by five (using the price of a decent MicroSD card, the difference between 32GB and 128GB is around $30) then the 128GB Switch would be $449
@Anti-Matter
Crocker's onto them!
Shibata: "Caruvinhu!!! YOU HAD ONE JOB!!"
@Skunkfish Sure, If Nintendo was that crooked, but I don't think they're that bad, of course they love money, but they also try to keep things affordable. If they had a higher storage model, I really doubt they'd price gouge like that.
@Henmii Technology commercials always superimpose images on the screen. Cell phone commercials, websites, and games are always faked for quality control purposes. Lighting conditions and dirty screens are two of the first variables I can think of that makes it unappealing to use live footage. It has nothing to do with not being able to. It's like a car commercial showing a dirty car or one with scratches or low tire pressure.
It always strikes me as a bit of a con that these ads just superimpose the footage over the screen. We know the actors are always overselling the games but at least show us the game running on the unit as it should.
Nintendo's commercials always make me cringe, lol
That's some good editing at 0:29.
If real, would make sense and seems about right.
Why is he looking at his switch while riding the bus? He should be conversing with the nice looking lady sitting next to him!
I love these commercials! I know that they are overexagerated, but it really seems like a fun console!!
@Raylax @jswhitfield8 Was gonna say the same thing, as the Nintendo website already pointed out, part of the 32GB is already reserved for the system itself :

@Akropolon (and some others),
You guys are right about the glare, not so much about fingerprints (use a clean device). However, there may be lines. I don't know what they are called, but when they film screens, you often see black lines. Maybe I was a bit to harsh.
so.... is this goofy thing the switch theme song now? lol
