Rumours about the possibility of playing as a Octoling in a future Splatoon update have been circulating on the web since August last year, so its surprising that this much requested bit of fan service hasn't been unveiled yet.
To add more evidence to this rumour, we even reported on data miners uncovering details of playable Octolings in October. It seems playable Octolings might be a Switch exclusive feature as Nintendo Life's chum Liam Robertson has been speaking to his sources again and has tweeted the following:
Would you welcome playable Octolings in the Switch version? As always, let us know with a comment below.

Cool, but I wish that this was a thing you can do in the first game though...
Rumor, schrumor.
By pure coincidence, I finally
gave indecided to buy Splatoon yesterday given the tempting festive discount, but I'll wait until my friend comes over to actually play it.The Switch reveal kind of gave away the fact we would get a Splatoon game on it, and the fact we can already enjoy this franchise on the go is pretty good news all around (although Alex Olney pretty much called it for the last April Fool's Day joke); in fact, if memory serves, this marks the shortest amount of time a Nintendo franchise has taken before offering a portable outing.
The next Splatoon will feature a grim dark story, with blood, and swearing, and drugs, and alcohol! I heard it from my "source".
See? I can do it too.
Why stop at Octolings? Play as Judd or any cat. Play an Octarian. Play as Captain Cuttlefish. Play as Spike. Grant some Squid Sisters skins - and animations.
It would be cool if the Switch version had more single player content or maybe even full feature local multiplayer.
@Savino I really don't see the problem with re-releases. There are millions more people that are likely going to buy the Switch who will never have had a chance to play this game. As it is, the online community for this game is dwindling on Wii U. It's a quick way to give the Switch a strong library out of the gate and attract sales while at the same time introducing new people to some great games that they missed. Plus, they're not just going to be simple cut and paste ports. They clearly have additional features to make them feel fresh. And if you don't want to double dip, you don't have to buy it again. Simple as that. There are likely plenty of brand-new games on the way, but Nintendo is understandably being secretive about them at this point.
Sick of $#@%&? Rumors give me the 12th, actually give me end of March, I can just feel my fingers hitting those shoulder buttons!
@AlexSora89 Don't wait for your friend, play the single player. It's too short to be an entire game on it's own, but what's there is really good. And there is replayability to get all the scrolls. And more if you have the 3 amiibo. I like parts of it better than the main game. I think it was world 3 that was really good. Took me 13 tries to beat the final boss, I usually give up after 4 or 5 and move on to a new game but I just had to do it.
If this turns out to be true, that'd pretty much seal the deal on me trading in/selling off my current copy of Splatoon and just get it on the Switch instead.
The more content the better. Hopefully the single player and local multiplayer get expanded, as they were quite lacking.
Personally, I'll buy Splatoon 1.5 regardless of Octolings or not. The game was stellar and I can only imagine how strong the game will be when its fine-tuned to perfection. And new clothing, new weapons - hopefully a new single player and it'd definitely be good enough to warrant a purchase on Switch. Bit worried about how it'll play though. The motion controls were essential with the Wii U. Without them, I feel like it'd hurt the gameplay. I've never had good aim in shooters (not that I play them) until Splatoon.
@Dev You're right. But for me the ending kinda left a sour taste because of the Octarian opression, so resolving that feels like the right thing to do. Maybe with a few extra levels in singleplayer.
I'd have welcomed Octolings in the Wii U version, but I don't think I'll be buying the game again for Switch.
The Switch NEEDS new installments of Mario Kart and Splatoon, not just ports with added features. Remakes won't sell Switches and will only alienate the faithful.....
...but yes, it would be cool to play as an Octoling once in a while.
Would be better for multiplayer that two diferent colour squids fighting against each other
Already sold off my Wii U copy of Splatoon: it's not receiving any more support, and I expect the servers to be near completely empty once the Switch version releases.
@rjejr
I'll see if the urge to play gains the upper hand against me. I have no trouble waiting a few days if needed.
Octolings remind me of the Cold War. Would love to play as the other side, it could even be a mode of Squid vs Octoling so they arent everywhere.
@thesilverbrick "There are millions more people that are likely going to buy the Switch "
LOLOLOL
@gatorboi352 Go ahead and laugh, but do you honestly think the Switch will sell as poorly as the Wii U?
Early interest in the Switch is already far greater than the buzz around Wii U before launch and the media's reception is significantly more positive. Plus, don't forget, Japan is still all about portable gaming, as 3DS sales in that region indicate month after month. This is the logical successor to the 3DS, as well as likely the only dedicated handheld for gaming in the coming generation, I can see it performing quite well there. Add to that the fact that the game lineup for the Switch looks already overwhelmingly better than the Wii U, and it will be a much more appealing console right out of the gate, not to mention people won't be confusing this thing with the Wii.
I'm in no way saying it's going to be the market leader, but it is no stretch of the imagination to say that the Switch can and most likely will sell at least a couple more million units than the Wii U did. Seriously, it's not hard to beat 10 million.
But go ahead and just type a big LOL, it's a very cheap way to increase your visibility on this website without saying anything intelligent, compelling or interesting at all.
I think it would make a great team death match mode. Similar to jokers v bats in Gotham impostors.
Awesome! As much as people are upset that Nintendo aren't adding this feature onto the Wii U version, at some point Nintendo had to start making features exclusive to the newer version. Seriously, you think Splatoon Switch will sell badly? Imagine Nintendo releasing it with no new features?
Edit: I am aware this is an unconfirmed rumour, but it does make sense that a Switch version will have new features. It shouldn't really be much of a surprise if this is true.
@thesilverbrick Don't sweat the sarcasm, there are a few people in the community that like to troll or just be really negative. While occasionally they can have good points, most of the time they just make themselves look stupid. There is one person (will leave them unnamed) who categorically denies ANY update to Pokémon GO every time one is rumoured and has been wrong 100% of the time... yet he still shouts people down like he has credibility. Ignorance is bliss.
@thesilverbrick
No I do not expect Switch to sell as poorly as Wii U. That might be the end of Nintendo as we know it, if that were to be the case. However, much of your stance is based in falsehoods.
"Early interest in the Switch is already far greater than the buzz around Wii U before launch and the media's reception is significantly more positive."
Is it though? How are you qualifying this statement?
"Plus, don't forget, Japan is still all about portable gaming, as 3DS sales in that region indicate month after month."
Japan is also, BY FAR, the smallest of the 3 markets. Like, not even a factor in the grand scheme of things. Western markets (and their tastes) rule the roost. Nintendo has still yet to figure this out.
"This is the logical successor to the 3DS, as well as likely the only dedicated handheld for gaming in the coming generation, I can see it performing quite well there."
False. Switch is quite literally the successor to Wii U. It is also a very bulky device when considering the portable factor of its offering. I believe that once Switch is out in the wild and a thing we can all hold and play, folks will organically realize how much of a pain it is routinely carry around another device (especially one as clunky and component heavy as Switch) on their person every day in addition to their smart phone and/or tablet they most likely already have. And don't give me the whole "smart phone gaming and Switch gaming isn't even comparable" because if you do, you're just missing the actual point here. The point being having to lug around a second device.
"Add to that the fact that the game lineup for the Switch looks already overwhelmingly better than the Wii U"
Based on what? Where are you getting this information from? If anything, the majority of the releases we do know about for Switch are quite literally Wii U ports/upgrades.
And just like that, argument destroyed. El-oh-el.
@bluedogrulez You add enough new features and options (and I am not talking about just reskins of existing features and options), along with all DLC included up to that point and I guarantee you they will sell. Will they move consoles on their own? Probably not. But it'll be nice content along with other, brand new games (Like BoTW, which should be there to do the console moving).
@gatorboi352 Just based on my perception of the buzz surrounding the Switch vs. the Wii U, there is no question the talk around the Switch is far more positive and louder than the Wii U. To me, I attribute that to the clear message that this is a new console. No mistaking this for an add on (as many still ask if the Wii U is to the Wii). Will that necessarily translate to booming success for the Switch? No. But there is no question the buzz around it is far greater and positive than it was for the Wii U based on the lack of confusion alone.
@YouSeemFRAZZLED
I don't know, perhaps it will be like the villain story in Hyrule Warriors; telling it from their perspective.
Nearly everything Robertson says comes across as very safe guesswork to me.
@UmbreonsPapa "Just based on my perception of the buzz surrounding the Switch vs. the Wii U"
That's my point exactly. Your perception (or any one person's perception) does not = reality.
@gatorboi352 Shhh! We don't want to hear your realistic outlook!
@JubilifeRival just keepin' it realz dawggg
@gatorboi352 My wording aside in my last post, I'm not sure what you're point is here. Are you trying to point out the hype surrounding the Switch vs the Wii U is no different? Anyone who's followed Nintendo in the last 5 to 6 years can see that there is no comparison in buzz versus the two. There is a lot more excitement for the Switch than there was for the Wii U. But for the sake of having a constructive debate and clarifying your point, how would you personally quantify the response?
@gatorboi352 First of all, my argument is not "destroyed". You out right agreed with me that it will not sell as poorly as the Wii U, which was my initial argument. So, thanks for that.
As far as the reception for the Switch goes, I got that information from articles I have seen on various websites, many of them that don't exclusively cater to video games. The simple number of views and likes the Switch reveal video got on YouTube is a testament to the fact that people are more enthusiastic about it and they were the Wii U. That, and among people I know (many of whom have not owned a Nintendo console in years) more than I expected are very excited for the Switch. And just the simple fact that people immediately know it's a new console and not just an upgrade of the Wii helps tremendously. Again, I'm not saying the public is foaming at the mouth for the Switch, but they seem at least marginally warmer to the idea than they did to the Wii U, enough for the Switch to outsell the Wii U at least by a couple million units, which again, was my original point.
I'm entirely aware that Japan is a small market. But I daresay the millions of units sold there helped keep the 3DS afloat and become the moderate success we know it is today. The Wii U has sold quite poorly there, but a potentially portable device seems poised to sell much better.
Japan loves portable gaming. And serious gamers aren't interested in smart device games. They want more substantial gaming experiences and traditional buttons and sticks for input. I will agree that the Switch does look quite bulkier and more unwieldy than any portable console Nintendo has produced to date, but if it's the only option and the games are good enough, people will buy it.
And as far as the games go, there are already more launch window games that we are aware of at this point than were confirmed by the time the Wii U was in stores. There are developers poised to support the Switch that have either never supported Nintendo, or haven't done anything substantial with them in decades. Add to that the fact that Nintendo's home console in and handheld markets will be fused into one, and you have what is likely a much heartier release schedule of first party titles lined up in the future. Again, everything could fall apart. The third-parties could jump ship. But you have to agree, two months before the Wii U launch, nobody was as optimistic.
I can't stress this enough: I am not saying the Switch is going to be a runaway sales success. I am simply saying it it's going to sell better than the Wii U. That was my initial argument, and nothing more. And since you have already agreed with me on that, your initial LOL was completely unnecessary and just an attempt at trolling with no substance.
@DanteSolablood Thanks. I think my problem is that sometimes I give people too much credit. I assume that they are reasonable people who enjoy honest and intelligent discussions. Problem is, it's the Internet and people who have absolutely nothing better to do think they can act unintelligent and unkind because they're protected by anonymity.
https://www.google.com/amp/venturebeat.com/2016/12/14/nintendo-switch-and-nes-classic-were-googled-more-than-playstation-vr-ps4-pro-or-xbox-one-in-2016/amp/?client=ms-android-samsung
There's a link as well that provides something of a verifiable metric for the buzz surrounding Switch. To be fair I don't know how well the Wii U lit up Google search engine for comparison's sake.
@gatorboi352 I'm not going to get into your discussion as it's pointless until we at least see the Switch presentation next week. But basically your main argument is based on your personal opinions rather than fact, the same as @thesilverbrick. No one is "destroying" anyone else's argument until we have some fact. All you're doing by using "LOL" is being a bit of a wiener.
@Savino To be blunt, Nintendo can't aim all of their efforts JUST at Wii U owners. I don't own a Wii U (I have a 3DS with an extensive collection) and have none of the games that will be released again on the Switch but I do know they're great games. I will buy them. You have to remember that the Wii U has only sold about 10 million consoles, there is a much wider gaming community that know these games are great but haven't wanted to buy into a dying console for quite a while.
Is it a bad idea ethically? Possibly. Is it a bad idea business-wise? Not by a long measure.
@gatorboi352
You contradict yourself so much that its hard to take you seriously, you come off as an obnoxious troll
@Savino Because ports (upgraded or otherwise) are an easy way to quickly give the system a bunch of games and make it look appealing. If they wait to do the ports, the Switch would have only Zelda and possibly one or two more titles within the first year from Nintendo itself. Being able to put out an upgraded Mario Kart, Smash Bros and Splatoon with little to no development time and so close to launch makes the Switch look attractive with such a varied library.
@thesilverbrick "I can't stress this enough: I am not saying the Switch is going to be a runaway sales success."
Ah but herein lies the issue. Nintendo needs Switch to be that runaway success. If Switch ends up selling, say, GameCube like lifetime numbers? It will be a failure. In the eyes of investors and in the general public.
Nintendo is no longer in a position, both financially (due to their strict 'can never take a loss on hardware' approach) and in the eyes of the industry and consumers as a whole to just sell 'ok' numbers.
@astros75 yeah sure either that or you just don't like what I'm saying. I'm not trolling, I'm being realistic.
This is cool but I just really hope Splatoon Switch has a bigger campaign mode or more single player stuff since that is what I enjoy most.
@thesilverbrick "If they wait to do the ports, the Switch would have only Zelda and possibly one or two more titles within the first year from Nintendo itself."
HOW DO YOU NOT SEE THIS AS THE PROBLEM?!!? Seriously dude. It's ok to be a fan, but some of this defense you're employing for the company is absurd.
@DanteSolablood False. His argument is based on hopes and dreams and a perception viewed through Ninty colored glasses.
I'm observing the actual real world. A world where dedicated portable consoles have plummeted off a cliff (so much so in fact that the king of dedicated portables had to merge their two divisions and create a hybrid instead) and smart phones and tablets have taken over in droves. Oh, except in the tiny corner of the world known as Japan. where their sales numbers are peanuts and crumbs in comparison to western markets.
@BensonUii game of the year, two-thousand-and-all-years
@gatorboi352 We seem to have entirely deviated from my original point. How is my perception based on hopes and dreams and Ninty-colored glasses? I'm not predicting wonderful things for Nintendo, nor am I defending them. I'm simply predicting the Switch is poised to sell more than the Wii U. That's it. I've said over and over again that I'm not predicting market leadership nor a runaway success. Sure, I'd love the Switch to exceed all expectations and sell Wii-like numbers, but I don't see that happening. I think you have an entirely incorrect idea of my position and points.
That said, I will entirely agree that Nintendo needs the Switch to be at least moderately successful. GameCube level sales won't cut it; you're absolutely right. Can they pull it off? Possibly, but I can't make a confident prediction until I've seen more, and fortunately we're a week away from some solid facts. I do think they've learned from their biggest Wii U mistakes, and only a fool would think for a second that the Switch will sell as bad or worse than the Wii U. It seems the Switch has architecture more suited to third party developers. They've wisely dropped the Wii branding. Fusing their home and handheld markets will allow for a better output of games. These are all good signs, but not enough for me to be overwhelmingly optimistic.
I'm a fan of the company for the software they've produced, but I'm the first to admit they've made and continue to make some really foolish mistakes, due to either stubbornness or a simple lack of understanding of how the market works.
Maybe I missed something but I don't quite understand why you attacked my comment about Switch ports of Splatoon, Mario Kart, etc. I think ports of tried and true Wii U games that sold well (considering the horrible install base) and received critical acclaim is a smart business move to flesh out the Switch's early library. Adding a few new features might make them feel fresh enough to double-dip, while not adding months of development time that could be better spent on new games. If they can pump out three high quality ports that most people have yet to play instead of one new game, I call that a smart move. It adds variety that can move systems initially, giving them a larger market to which they can sell original titles a few months down the line. Of course there are new titles in development, as well. They're understandably being quiet about them until next week. But take the ports away and there's less to play, nobody buys the system and we're back to where we started.
Your most recent comments lead me to believe that we've essentially been on the same page all along. In the future, if you disagree with someone's phrasing or need more information, simply asking or opening a dialogue is far more effective than simply LOLing their comment.
@gatorboi352 I think your perception is viewed through doom coloured glasses rather than reality. There are a couple of points you've made that aren't realistic in the slightest.
You claim Nintendo have merged their divisions together because "dedicated portable consoles have plummeted off a cliff" despite the 3DS managing to be one of the top selling consoles of all time (#11 ahead of the PS4), Pokémon Sun/Moon being one of the fastest selling Pokémon games ever & most of all the Wii U failed spectacularly! Heck the 3DS had a MUCH worse launch than the Wii U & is still selling.
Nintendo's home console failed, their handheld was successful & your "reality" tells you that Nintendo are making the Switch a hybrid so they can bank on their home console aspect?
Also, tablets are in decline in the West and have been stagnant for a while. I can't argue that smartphones and apps have an ever-growing presence but bringing up tablets as competition for handheld consoles is like bringing a turd to a knife-fight.
Either way, my main point was that using "LOL" and "destroyed" in a discussion is simply being a wiener for the sake of it. You argue your points well & are certainly intelligent, but why drag yourself down? You're only going to make the person you insulted more likely to argue with you.
I've been trained to know octolings to be evil. They are evil.
I'll always be an inkling.
@thesilverbrick @gatorboi352
Children! Shut up and wait for the 12th!
@DanteSolablood
"Bringing up tablets as competition for handheld consoles is like bringing a turd to a knife-fight."
LOLOLLOLOLOLOLLOLOLLOLOLOLOLLOLOOLOLOLOLOL!!!
But it would be really useful! You could start rubbing it on yourself and your opponent would be too weirded out to fight you and forfeit, or your could distract them for a moment and throw it on their face! HA! HEADSHOT *****!
I can't contain my hype... I'm really hoping we get Splatoon 2 for Switch, opposed to getting a port, I'd love a bigger story mode and more online game modes. Not to mention being able to play as an Octoling girl/boy. Splatoon is my favourite game on Wii U!
@thesilverbrick fair enough, and thanks for the reply!
I love Splatoon but for me to buy it on Switch it needs to be a full fledged sequel with new content.(preferably a bigger single player mode, which was awesome on the original. Really cool final boss)
@DanteSolablood so much wrong here...
"3DS managing to be one of the top selling consoles of all time"
As laughable of a claim that this is to make on its own, you then site that it resides above the PS4, a home console mind you that oh btw has been out 2 and a half years less.
"I can't argue that smartphones and apps have an ever-growing presence but bringing up tablets as competition for handheld consoles is like bringing a turd to a knife-fight."
Ah, seems you've also missed my point here as well. I'll just copy pasta from my last post for your eyes too. And I quote: And don't give me the whole "smart phone gaming and Switch gaming isn't even comparable" because if you do, you're just missing the actual point here. The point being having to lug around a second device.
I'm not saying tablets and smart phones are here to take over dedicated handhelds because of TEH GAMEZ. No, I'm bringing it up because people like carrying around their smart phone or tablet since, you know, they already have this device on their person at all times anyways, for non-game related functions. By and large, the masses do not lug around multiple devices (especially one that is solely used for gaming purposes) in this day and age.
@Clownshoes nailed it.
At least we are getting Judd , Spike, Captain Cuttlefish, All the four shopkeeper characters, Octolings and DJ Octavio Amiibos in 2017! Hurrah!
@Savino The simple answer would be time and resources. I've said it before, with the time and resources required to make one brand new AAA title, they can upgrade ports of three games. Three is greater than one. And since most people didn't buy a Wii U, these are essentially new games to the masses, anyway. Three high quality games of varying genres look a whole lot better than one.
@Clownshoes I think you are incorrect here. The Switch will sell 3 million units in it's first year in Japan alone. The console will benefit from the several Wii U ports - these games will not have been accessible to many gamers as the wii U install base was relatively low - so it's a fantastic HIGH QUALITY games library coming quickly to the Switch. Also - interest is much much much higher than it was for Wii U already . Online services will be far improved - I am hoping that Nintendo provides a paid monthly online service - to improve their revenue, engage players into the ecosystem and to provide a much better service. in regards to breaking consoles - iPads are used everywhere - some get broken - but it doesn't put people off buying and using them. . I'm excited!
@Clownshoes It remains to be seen, but 10 million Wii U consoles is sad and just about any new console could top that number. Nobody knew what the Wii U was when it launched, thinking it was just an add-on for the Wii. It had next to zero third party support. Its gimmick (the GamePad) was prohibitively expensive and not all that useful. Nintendo was way too slow to publish even first party games for it. Everything was stacked against the Wii U. It was doomed before it even started.
Nintendo has corrected a lot of these issues with the Switch (clear branding, better third party support, an actually useful "gimmick" in its portability, better first-party output) but it's too early to call whether or not it'll be a true success. Mark my words, though, it'll outsell the Wii U, even if only by a little.
And you're wrong about the third party support. You definitely need the CoDs, Maddens, etc. to be a market leader, for sure, but I have my doubts that the Switch can ever be that. It can carve out a niche and sell respectably if Nintendo plays its cards right, much like the 3DS did. Note that the 3DS did quite well without any of those games you mentioned, and the Wii was a massive success, as well, with downgraded ports of those franchises that didn't sell all too well on the Wii.
Sounds to me like you just want Nintendo to release their own version of the PS4, but just with a Nintendo branding. That would be a disaster. They tried to be like everyone else in the GameCube era (similar specs, standard controls, etc.) and they landed squarely in third place. If the Wii and original DS taught us anything, it's that Nintendo does best when they do something a bit different from the competition, whether you like it or not.
@Savino Based on my conversations with friends who don't own a Wii U, the games they missed the most were Mario Kart, Smash and Splatoon, so I think it's fair to say people care about those games. They just came out too late in the Wii U's life cycle, when the public at large realized the console was a sinking ship and didn't care to invest in one.
I get where you're coming from, though. I'm a Wii U owner who already has all those games and I personally wish there were more original titles sooner. But the fact of the matter is that Nintendo's development resources are limited, and they'd rather pour time and effort into getting as many quality titles on the system as fast as they can. Ports are the fastest and most business-savvy way to do that, for better or for worse.
It might not be as bad as you think, too. Next week we might find out that the ports have been upgraded more than we thought and might justify a purchase. Nintendo will likely show us some other new games they've got lined up. I'd reserve judgement until after the Direct. Let's revisit this next week, shall we?
@gatorboi352 No problem.
@Savino "because Sony and MS are just two of the same console! "
And yet, they both have outsold Wii U by double. Why is this? The market has changed. Nintendo has not realized this fact.
Same thing happened to BlackBerry. Google and Apple ran away with the market by doing things the complete opposite of them.
I could care less as long as there is some sort of motion or gyro thingy to control aiming, or I won't play it. I hated dojo or whatever it was when I didn't have it. Major disadvantage and horrible game play without it. Cumbersome and less immersive.
@gatorboi352 Hey there, went out for a couple of hours! However, your points also miss/deliberately ignore almost all of the context to my statements.
\"A home console mind you that oh btw has been out 2 and a half years less.\" Yes, not only do you need to look at the 3DS sales with the knowledge that the 3DS is a handheld console which has always been a smaller market globally, but the 3DS also had a horrific launch & took a long time to get moving. The 3DS had a launch arguably worse than the Wii U... but has still sold very well.
Plus the horrifically launched 3DS (with sales off of a cliff edge) is still a clear 11million units ahead of the PS4 (which has pretty much had an entire generation to itself).
No, I'm bringing it up because people like carrying around their smart phone or tablet since, you know, they already have this device on their person at all times anyways, for non-game related functions. I won't bring up that how comparable the games are because that's simply not in question. Most people don't bring tablets with them & tablets sales are dropping, they can literally be dismissed from the conversation.. however mobile/cell phones are indeed a factor. However, there are something to take into consideration. 1. People who were always likely to buy consoles & handhelds are likely not going to be satisfied with the mobile gaming experience. 2. A majority of mobile games require a data connection. Only one of the games on my phone doesn't require a constant connection (Minecraft PE). Not everyone wants to shell out the money for a large data plan or lose the ability to play games when their signal is bad. 3. People play mobile games on their phones & their tablet at home as well, I certainly don't have a single home console in my house... but I still have mobile games AND a 3DS. However, if you literally know "most people" then feel free to state their opinion as fact. We have the next couple of years to find out who's right.
BTW, you've ducked my main point a couple of times & attempted to move the discussion elsewhere. Why is it that you need to act like a wiener & insult people when you are already quite capable of putting your points across so well without being rude?
@iGen You have bested me sir! Turd would be useful in a knife fight.
I'd probably prefer a gun myself.
Oh I see Doctor Cupcake says so. Well what can you say it's a given, add some flour and eggs and you get gaming information. Sweet.
All I want for switchmas is voice chat!
@DanteSolablood I still maintain that there is not a sizable market in the west for what the Switch is offering. People in the west (by and large) don't care for the portable aspect of the console, and they also (by and large) don't care for an under powered home console in 2017 when things like a $250 PS4 mini is already a thing that exists.
Most importantly though, gamers both west and east want games. Something Nintendo has failed to consistently deliver on over the last 5-6 years.
As to your main point? I mean, if that is your main point then I do apologize. Maybe it was just a bad day yesterday? But yeah, my main point still stands: the Switch is not the savior Nintendo is hoping it will be, and yet they are not in a situation anymore for it not to be. Anything less than say, SNES like sales numbers might just doom Nintendo's plans going forward as a dedicated hardware provider.
@Lord and isn't it just so sad, that in 2017, we're still wishing and hoping for something as trivial as voice chat from Nintendo?
@gatorboi352 That was indeed my main point (as I said twice), considering we'll have more information on the Switch in about 6/7 days. I'm happy to wait for more information on Nintendo's plans rather than make assumptions.
I personally think Nintendo can find a space in the Western market, not at the top of it mind you... but a good enough position that they can make profit & maintain a sizable fan base. I don't think anyone is arguing that Nintendo is going to be a PS4 killer. If they do, keep the laughter internal please.
Yes there are a lot of hardcore gamers that demand their yearly CoD reskin & whatever this "Madden" thing is, but I don't think they are the majority by a long way. Where were they when the Wii (an underpowered console) outsold the 360 & PS3 by 20 million units?
Plus fun fact, the lifetime sales of each main CoD release are around the same as each main Pokémon release. If not having CoD is meant to sink the Switch, why hasn't a lack of Pokémon tanked the PS4?
Either way, it is a game of wait & see, Nintendo not releasing enough good quality games could damage the Switch... but we don't know they're going to do that. Considering they've merged their gaming divisions they are likely going to be able to up their output.
"Yes there are a lot of hardcore gamers that demand their yearly CoD reskin & whatever this "Madden" thing is, but I don't think they are the majority by a long way."
Well, they are.
"Where were they when the Wii (an underpowered console) outsold the 360 & PS3 by 20 million units?"
Um, PS3 and 360 still managed to sell 80 million a piece. Also, don't even try pulling that Wii card now in 2017. That 'lightning caught in a bottle' one off fluke is no longer relevant in today's day and age, especially considering the fate of Nintendo ever since, like 2010.
@DanteSolablood
I guarantee you that if I had a turd, and if you had a gun, I would win.
HEADSHOT B****!
@gatorboi352 "Well, they are" Personal opinion or provable fact? My opinion is different to yours. Plus it's interesting to note that Pokémon sales on one console are comparable to CoD sales on multiple platforms. (Pokémon 2006 25.23m/ CoD4 MW 2007 17.4m. Pokémon 2014 28.82m/CoD Black Ops 3 2014 25.68m).
"PS3 and 360 still managed to sell 80 million a piece. Also, don't even try pulling that Wii card now in 2017" Well the 3DS managed to sell well over 60m units despite a disastrous launch. And lets not forget a considerable amount of those 360 sales will be 3rd, 4th or 5th replacement consoles.
Either way, we're getting into opinion rather than fact. We will see! Oh and if you want to make your point to me... don't forget the "@DanteSolablood". Wouldn't want to accidentally get the last word in without me seeing it. Would be a shame!
@DanteSolablood How much did 3DS cost in comparison to how much a PS3 or 360 cost? And let's not forget a considerable amount of those 3DS sales will be repeat purchasers. Many people own multiple DSs/3DSs.
@gatorboi352 "How much did 3DS cost in comparison to how much a PS3 or 360 cost?"
At launch the 3DS cost £229 in the UK compared to £209 & £279 for the Xbox 360 models. The PS3 launched at £499 but was (as far as I remember) the first Blu Ray player to launch in the UK and hit the sub £190 much earlier than the 3DS with the Slim.
A "new" 3DS still costs £180, only about £70 less than a PS4 with game. So yes... all about price.
Have they said if online play Between the Wii U and they switch will work? Because I think it would be nice if split in and Mario Kart 8 and such would work regardless of which system you were playing on, but I have a feeling that since its Nintendo they will be a butt about it and the Wii U version will not be able to play online with the switch folks
@Danrenfroe2016 Well it appears from the original Switch presentation that Mario Kart 8 Switch will have slightly different game mechanics (it shows you able to hold two items at a time etc.). Depending on how heavily updated the game is, it may not be compatible with the Wii U version.
@DanteSolablood well I will be upset at Nintendo again if they do this. And they better support the Wii U online play for years to come, if they pull another Wii on me and kill off the online too early, I will definitely not buy a switch, I can only gets stabbed in the back so many times.
@gatorboi352 to be fair I only want it in monster hunter, I can live with other first party games not having it but third parties...no excuse!
A year later, and the Octo Expansion is confirmed...
