A big part of the pre-show of The Game Awards 2016 was a new trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It focuses on showing new environments and gives glimpses of villages, bigger towns and other characters.
You can see it below, and fans are sure to pick it apart for details; there's plenty to see, including what may be a glimpse of Zelda herself.
Are you impressed with the trailer? Let us know, and be sure to join us on our live blog of The Game Awards, with more footage of the game (a 'new experience') still expected.

Simply amazing.
Is that Linkle? Female Link? Zelda?
I NEED ANSWERS
I really want a female Link.
@Phin68 I'm going to guess Zelda.
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy Same. It is probably Zelda.
First comment: "When are new NES Minis coming in?"
Amazing trailer!!! Way too short though.. need more damnit!
@Xaessya Now that's just sad.
Yeah. I want this.
That friggin' amazing trailer gave me a few answers, but it exponentially increased my questions!
Also, it was way too short for my tastes. XD
@OzHuski they said there will be more later into the game awards show.
I think the first female character was female Link, the second one Zelda. First one was wearing gloves, the second, hand stockings (?)
We need MOAR
Where's the 2 hour Gamexplain analysis?
This raises a handful of questions.
Where my LINKLE at?!
They would not create LINKLE just for a spin off!
Looking good.
Good to see the Wii U logo at the end of the trailer.
Ill get both versions but only open the Switch copy.
Far too short! Need more.
Definitely Zelda. Look at how he kneels behind and beside her. Assuming those different scenes are the same woman.
For me Linkle is in the same category as Tingle, for comic relief. Id love to have the spirit of the hero rencarnated into a girl, but Linkle is too airheaded for me to carry any real role in a mainline zelda game
@Mad_Haus
People can change their clothes :s
Female Zelda!!! It's gotta be!
@NinChocolate Zelda is always female.
@KirbyTheVampire
Nah, Zelda has always been a brave male out to save the princess.
It's obviously Zelda and Nintendo really knows how to tease us with only showing a glimpse of her
Awesome! I like the look of that flying guy, reminds me of a Rito, but more villainous. And that huge flying thing sorta looks like the Wind Fish, or Levias? I need more!
Man what an amazing trailer. That is totes Zelda.
WHY TF IS THERE NO DEMO
Saw live gameplay on The Game Awards. The Wii U frame-rate is not very impressive.
Wii U Version looks like 20 FPS.
Looks awesome. This wait has been insane. The two looks and this game amd the next Shovel Knight DLC looks great, but as I continue to watch these awards it's really sad how Nintendo hasn't really won a thing, unless you count Pokemon Go getting the handheld award. To name some I really have enjoyed this year, Star Foz Zero (I know everyone hates it) Fire Emblem Fates, and currently Pokemon Sun. Haven't even heard any good nominations and I honestly know nothing about all of these other games like Uncharted 4 that keeps coming up. They may be fantastic, but from this side of things they all look similair in a way.
@Whopper744 I really enjoyed Star Fox Zero! Great game!
THE 2nd trailer is below. It's not as good or as revealing as the first one.
@KirbyTheVampire
I was just about to say this!
The official trailer looked great and showed a 'living' world for the first time, with various characters and towns shown. It got my hopes up!
Then I just watched some new gameplay on IGN...wow...it looked like it was chugging at 20fps or less. No wonder all the previous videos Nintendo showed took place in barren wastelands with 2-3 small enemies. It looks like this game is pushing the Wii-U to its technical limits and it doesn't look good at all.
Hopefully the Switch version runs this better, or it will be very disappointing.
@Whopper744 This show was just to see what "world premieres" they had, everything else is pretty subjective. Now that is not to say Nintendo deserved any prices at all, though they released quiality content truth is every other developer did too and competition is really fierce.
This and that weird Death Stranding trailer was worth watching the VGA show.
I stopped watching the stream after that 5 minute underwhelming low frame rate gameplay ended is there still Nintendo things going on
@HeroOfTime32 cheers for that! I read that shortly after posting so hoping for a decent length trailer now.
@WilliamCalley Dont trust the live gameplay from IGN. I thought the same last E3 when the live stream looked like it couldnt handle it - watching it again later from another source and the gameplay was smooth. Still had frame dips but not as bad as the live stream made it look.
@OzHuski
It wasn't a livestream. It was a slick Nintendo produced promo video. No technical hiccups.
The game looked like it was being played underwater. Shockingly slow. I honestly can't believe what I just saw. I pray the Switch version runs much smoother...
Looks beautiful and I hope that music is the actual in game soundtrack. I just hope the over-world is packed with things to do and feels alive.
@WilliamCalley
Laura Kate Dale says the Switch version will run better. How much better remains to be seen.
I love that the second video shows you can find dungeons and shrines by listening to songs and legends. That is just how it should be.
Looks amazing.
Dat Zelda tease though...
I'm sure a lot of people will be jumping to the conclusion that those bird-people are Rito, and while there are similarities, they do appear to be a different species.
In the other video we see a more parrot-like one, showing that there are different sub-species, suggesting that these beings most likely evolved from birds rather than Zoras.
Plus, Rito possess certain traits that are a result of their Zora ancestry which these beings do not possess, instead possessing the more avian equivalent.
There are two possibilities that come to mind for me... either they evolved from Loftwings, or they are somehow related to the Oocca... both of which could explain their connection to the giant mechanical bird... and the age of both species would explain the evolution of different sub-species.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE the frame rate isn't really that bad
Its zelda, seeing Link bow as for a royalty. Im guessing she will be playable. Choosing between zelda and Link. (would be awesome)
In the end seems like it was clearly Zelda. But that tease at 0:52 seems really like it was a female Link.
I'm a little concerned after how that demo played out that this won't be a day one release for Switch.
@Gamer83 It's not. It's currently rumored for June though.
Absolutely gorgeous. Love it!
The trailer music is still heavenly. Like something Joe Hisaishi would compose.
If there is a big framerate difference between the two versions, I might just save this experience for the Switch.
I just don't want link's gender being pickable. To be clear I am not saying 'no gurlz in gam' I'm saying I want to choose between link and Zelda/Sheik, Imp, Linkle, or his sister
Having the hero of 'wild' as twins and at the start you decide which to play as and the other goes off for a separate adventure
@Whopper744 Nintendo has put out some quality stuff this year, but nothing truly great, I think. Though Pokken could be the foundation of a pretty awesome game in the future. Anyway, why would Uncharted even be nominated when it isn't really a game? Witcher 3 is kind of the same. Not really a game. Overwatch looks pretty neat, from what I have seen. Dark Souls 3 is pretty damn good, but it is a rehash and not really an RPG
This looks like the greatest game ever made! (serious)
@abe_hikuraNew Linkle design and background revealed:

That was glorious! The music is so beautiful!
@Miss_Dark Because as they have said, they are talking about the gameplay footage they showed, not about this video. I'm positive about the game being optimized, but the gameplay did show a considerable frame rate drop. I never give much importance to this kind of things, but again, the drop was considerable even for me.
Who is that fighting with Link at about 23 seconds into the video?
Looks awesome! Very excited
Oh me oh my! Settlements! People! Rito or some almost related other bird folk?! Zelda..?? Short but sweet trailer...
Blue is the new green!
I'm theorizing that both women are Zelda. While I could be completely wrong on this, but a possibility is that Zelda (or possibly just a villager) has been impersonating the Hero of Time/Link due to his absence. Not in just a fabricated/phony way, but so that she's taken to protecting villages, conquering dungeons, searching for the Master Sword and such. It seems plausible enough and I think it would please most fans.
Also, did anyone notice the weird purple-pink (calamity Ganon colored) goo all over the place in that destroyed area? Seems important to both the story and potentially gameplay.
I'm gonna guess that person is Zelda and not Link. They've already stated that Link is male, and it would not make any sense to obscure a simple gender choice in this day and age.
The soundtrack is amazing, very Studio Ghibli.
The grame rate looks like it could benefit from a boost...buy hey FFXV's frame rate looked terrible untile one month from release and is actually perfectly fine in the game. So I am not worrying too much, as Nintendo usually has even greater polish than SE.
Did nobody Notice that the first Female character was Holding a Nintendo Switch - along with the Nintendo Switch Zelda Special Edition Leather Carry Belt Case?
COME ON EVERYBODY!
The artistry in that trailer is wonderful. That sparkle on Link made me yearn for this to be a Christmas game.
Meh, they couldn't improve the in-game textures a bit? The rocks and cliff especially at 0:35 look bland and washed out. I wonder what the next trailer will reveal...rabbids perhaps?
@gcunit It is a Christmas game in my dreams. Next year will be a very special one for Nintendo I can feel it
Thank goodness. I was worried that BOTW was going to devoid of other characters. The towns, side stories and slightly tragic NPCs are my favourite aspects of the Zelda series.
Ocarina, Majoras Mask and Link's Awakening are the pinnacles of the series for me.
I bet that the woman they showed is Zelda, in both shots. She just changes clothes, which, y'know, is kind of common.
No one is going to comment that Link finally had the effing Master Sword, after it was shown in such a bad state?!
I'm beggining to think that the story may have some tragic undertones - the music, the destroyed Hyrule Field - maybe it will lead up to a bad ending and Hyrule ending underwater, setting the stage for Wind Waker.
Hey, so we will get to use the Master Sword eventually! I was worried we were not going to be given the chance, seeing as all weapons seem to be destructible.
Yup I'm excited. Just come on out now!
Aaaah, so lovely!! Towns, npc's, coop (?!). Also that girl, Zelda or Impa. Also: Strange creature with strange flying ship? Now that must be the main-villain! Also: Sweeeet music!
We have to wait till March (or longer). Ah, man!!
Wow, this trailer is great! Is that Linkle?
BTW, I'm really sorry that I missed the Game Awards...
@Mad_Haus I think it's the other way around.
@Emilia -tan sorry but... I love Rem
I Like your avatar. I'm also a big fan of rezero
@Luna_110 agreed it's Zelda in both. If you look very closely, you'll see she's got that gold ring on her left middle finger in both of the shots, (in the first shot, freeze frame just before 0:53 and you'll see it) and as Link is bowing in the second shot of her with what looks like royal garb, I'd say it's definitely Zelda.
I NEEEEED IT!!
The only interesting tidbit to me was that the bird characters both had similar blue and gold clothing to link and the possible 2 female characters. So we very well could have a gender option in BotW.
Based on what we saw in the summer, I was kind of hoping for Zelda to be an AI that tells the story of pre-destruction Hyrule (a legend from Zelda, maybe?) and maybe have her successor or a Linkle-type join Link on his quest.
It's weird that the origin story this time involves a weeping Sheikah crest. Usually it's Hylia doing something, or the Din/Farore/Nayru trio. I wonder if that's important.
(See's the bird...) THAT AINT FALCO!
The bridge scene gave me some fun Hobbit meets Xenoblade vibes, and the enemy seems ancient, yet futuristic. Almost an Atlantis of the skies, Laputa feel.
Still not too taken with the character design, the costumes are a little too Wind Waker, and the enemies are just 'there'. One of my favorite parts of games like Ocarina and TP (and ALttP and ALBW, but to a lesser extent) wereenemy bases and camps.
The desert base camps, in particular, had very meaningful enemy field placement. One of the areas western games have over Zelda is smarter foes, with camps, and loot piles. There's just something jarring about random enemies patrolling random sections of this massive world map. It's almost as if Miyamoto tries to make the fodder precisely that: mindless distractions and empty shells. Sorry if this is a bit old hat, but I'd rather see a smaller map with more genuine encounters than a gigantic map flooded with pointless battles.
