The weekly Media Create chart results out of Japan are now available, and this week they're dominated by new releases on PS4 and Vita, though Nintendo's hardware sales have maintained their momentum.
As you can see in the top 20 below, new releases on PS4 and Vita are the headline story, with Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization and World of Final Fantasy leading the way. Monster Hunter Stories (now close to a quarter of a million retail sales) is the first 3DS title in 10th, while the delayed River City Ransom SP (minus the co-op that was once expected) only managed to secure 14th place and 6,268 sales in its debut week. The results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PS4] Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization (Bandai Namco, 10/27/16) – 70,871 (New)
- [PSV] Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization (Bandai Namco, 10/27/16) – 69,648 (New)
- [PS4] World of Final Fantasy (Square Enix, 10/27/16) – 53,176 (New)
- [PSV] World of Final Fantasy (Square Enix, 10/27/16) – 47,159 (New)

- [PS4] Titanfall 2 (EA, 10/28/16) – 21,443 (New)
- [PSV] My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO! Game (5pb., 10/27/16) – 19,269 (New)

- [PSV] Neo Atlas 1469 (Artdink, 10/27/16) – 4,969 (New)
- [Wii U] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Mojang, 06/23/16) – 4,845 (161,481)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SIE, 03/19/15) – 4,610 (905,493)
- [Wii U] Paper Mario: Color Splash (Nintendo, 10/13/16) – 4,490 (33,169)
- [PSV] Macross Delta Scramble (Bandai Namco, 10/20/16) – 3,960 (28,567)
Moving on to hardware, both PS4 and Vita saw small increases, no doubt helped by all of those new releases. New 3DS LL (XL) still held second place with an increase in sales, though, with the rest of the 3DS family also holding steady; the Wii U is still, sadly, selling less than 2,000 units per week.
- PlayStation 4 – 30,375 (27,069)
- New 3DS LL – 15,151 (14,092)
- PlayStation Vita – 10,392 (8,853)
- 2DS – 7,103 (7,404)
- New 3DS – 3,090 (2,700)
- Wii U – 1,898 (1,919)
- PlayStation 3 – 610 (763)
- Xbox One – 335 (752)
- 3DS – 244 (370)
- 3DS LL – 72 (77)
A quiet week from Nintendo's perspective, with new titles on Sony's hardware stealing the limelight.

@ThomasBW84 Stories is actually 10th place.
Also looks like Nintendo may lose out on any sales till the Switch comes out. Looks pretty bleak for the next 5 months.
Is this the 1st week Splatoon has slipped off the list?
Well I added to the Macross Delta Scramble count. Can't put it down.
@Spoony_Tech "Also looks like Nintendo may loss out on any sales till the Switch comes out. Looks pretty bleak for the next 5 months."
I think Pokemon may be able to crack the Top 20.
Can you replace "modest" for "crap" in every Nintendolife article? Seems like!
Nice use of the boldface for (New) too bad Wii U may never see that again. Maybe not even for Zelda U if they make it digital or bundle BotW w/ Switch. Well maybe Japan's Wii U has something else I don't know about. So crazy nothing for Wii U for the holidays. Zip. Zero. Zilch.
Where's Just Dance in Japan? ugh.
Wow. Just 33,000 total sales for Paper Mario Wii U in Japan... not good.
RIP in peace Nintendo?
@rjejr I keep forgetting about that solely because I'm not interested but yeah that's a big one.
@Spoony_Tech Pokemon will be the top game until Swtich, yeah Final Fantasy may win in the release date, but the days when FF beat Pokemon in sales are long gone.
With so many big releases on PS4/Vita this week it's unsurprising they'd have so many games in the chart, I'm actually impressed that the 3DS and Wii U games on there have held in as well as they have... but I'll be more interested to see how quickly sales drop after the first week.
@Spoony_Tech No Hyrule Warriors?
wow, I don't like any of the top 13 in that list lol Me and Japan definitely have different taste in gaming.
I think Nintendo will do very poorly in every region until Switch comes out. Considering it's a console/ portable hybrid, I could see it effecting both Wii U and 3DS sales, with people waiting for the very powerful portable, instead of a portable starting to show it's age.
@alasdair91 It was expected, truthfully. When you make something that goes the total opposite route of what people want, sales are bound to be weak.
@Spoony_Tech I was just giving you a hard time, I keep writing about Wii U stuff and people are always telling me how great 3DS is to. And I believe them, I'm just not a handheld gamer at all. Nintneod Badge Arcade was fun for a few days, should really get that on mobile, good advertising by the bunny we call Coindexter.
Super Mario Maker may hit #1 as well, even gimped w/ no online, b/c 3DS install base has to be bigger in Japan than the Wii U. Like 10x bigger maybe. And Yoshi is Jan 19. Won't sell as well as SMM, but Top 5 probably. Nintendo wants us all to buy a 3DS this Christmas whether we want to or not. A 3DS and a NES Mini. Save the rest of our money for a Switch.
Page 6 of 7, upcoming releases w/ dates worldwide. It tilts just a little to the left.

berserk and the band of the hawk? O.O why didn't I know about that game?!!!!!!!!!
also, japan loves their bad animes, sword art online LOL.
@RyanSilberman While many die hard fans were annoyed, the game got decent reviews. Also, Sticker Star on the 3DS sold almost 2 million units in the end, despite the bad reviews and fan hate.
@kotag
Its like Hyrule Warriors but with all your favorite characters!
Like: Griffith and Wyald!
Oh yeah and Guts & Friends too.
World of Final Fantasy is great, even with its cringe-worthy dialogue at times. Love it.
What's left to say about the Wii U?
Paper Mario: ColoUr Splash is nearly gone after only 3 weeks in the charts and hugely disappointing sales. Minecraft though to its credit has been hanging in there for quite a considerable number of consecutive weeks.
@kotag Just so you know it will have a western release next year. I'll have to look for the link. (I'm at work and Berserk isn't um work safe)
@rjerj @Spoony_Tech I think Mario Maker 3ds could make a dent. I mean, the Wii u version has sold over 1million copies In Japan, and there's only 3million Wii u owners there vs what like 10million 3ds owners?
@alasdair91 Sticker Star also got decent reviews. You can't always trust a "professional" critic for an opinion you don't have. Call of Duty is the posterboy of that.
Sticker Star sold only because 1) It was on a system with a wide userbase. 2) It was originally hyped up as an actual Paper Mario game.
@kotag ikr SAO is a terrible anime
@Moon
Never !
Nintendo must fight back !
Go, Nintendo !
@Anti-Matter I'm with you dude! They're just biding their time... they'll be back, better than ever!
microsoft can say that the xbox one outsold two of the best selling consoles of this generation in nintendo's home territory, japan: the 3ds and 3ds ll.
Pokemon is pretty much all Nintendo has to coast on until the Switch, it seems. Although, other than GTA, I can't think of a better series to coast on.
Protip: your systems will probably sell better if you develop games for them, Nintendo.
Honestly, the best thing about the Switch will be its unification of handheld and console dev teams. There is no excuse for this thing ever having a dry spell that lasts more than a month.
@rjejr Thank you very much, thanks to you, I learned that Nintendo intends to release Yôkai Watch 2 in Europe too.
@Ralizah But will it result in the unification of handheld and home console consumers?
(I know that I find the console suspect despite being a big handheld and Nintendo enhusiast)
@Rei I hope so. I mean, a lot of people will buy it just to play Pokemon, if nothing else. If Switch gets the sort of games that came to the 3DS, then it'll be popular. It'll also attract a lot of the home console-only crowd.
@Rei You're welcome.
Nice FB page, I'd forgotten all about my VHS copy of Legend of the Overfiend, I hid it somewhere when my kids were little. First was great, 2nd went a little overboard for my tastes w/ the tentacles. I'll be using that anime website for MHS:RO now, I've been wondering how I was going to watch it. So thank you.
@rjejr How did I help you ? ^^"
Ahah, I watched the second compilation as a teen (13 or 14) so I kind of remember it fondly (except the ridiculous demon triple "missile"). I only tried the original OAVs recently and it made me regret my non-participation to the US manga funding. The story in itself was full of basic elements but pretty great (and they never try to make it appealing, I was even disgusted xD). Sadly, I can't find any (il)legal copy of II or any fansub of the 200x (re)animation of the original story.
The Monster Hunter Stories anime is available on Crunchyroll only for North American territories, I think. (at least, it blocked me when I used my french IP)
PS: sorry about that unnecessary talk about Urotsukidoji. ^^"
PPS: I never talked about this anime on this site. o_o
@Rei You helped me by showing me where to find the MHS anime. I'm in the US so I can get Crunchy Roll
And I clicked on your name b/c I was trying to find out who Rei was, reminded me of somebody I follow on twitter named Riae (NSFW), I confused the spelling. That led me to your FB page. But no, this isn't the place for demon triple missile discussions, which is all I recall from the 2nd movie, which is why I only own the first on VHS and stopped watching after that.
