The UK chart results are out, and they represent one of the busier weeks in the country in a number of months. Though FIFA 17 is comfortably number one ahead of Gears of War 4, there are a whole load of PlayStation VR titles arriving in the top 20 alongside the hardware.
So, what about Nintendo games? Paper Mario: Color Splash was an inevitable victim of the influx, though it's still the leading seller on Wii U - it fell from 14th down to 31st in the all-format charts. Considering the context of the results (13 new entries in the top 40) that's not too bad.
The only other Wii U title worth mentioning is Skylanders Imaginators, which came second in the Wii U chart; the multi-format release was 8th in the all-format chart, and in the single-format results the Wii U iteration secured 33rd place. It sold less than the PS4, Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions, though at least beat out the PS3 release; yes, we're looking for small wins with that one.
There's only one more Nintendo release in the all-format top 40, with New Super Mario Bros. 2 clinging on in 39th place.
Not exactly a memorable week for Nintendo UK, though Paper Mario: Color Splash is at least holding on in the top 40 for now.

It's holding on already.
For now.
Poor Mario Party Star Rush deserved SO much better! This one really feels like Nintendo listened to criticism of previous entries and tried to fix them.
It's a great game and really deserves more love!
Haven't brought new Paper Mario yet mainly due to it still having issues I hated from SS. Honestly just waiting for it to drop to the £15-20 mark.
@Toadsfriend Agreed. I bought it purely for playing with my girlfriend and her daughter as they're the only kind of games I can get them to play. Whilst I enjoyed the MP games from the N64 days, the series has always felt pretty flat. Star Rush really changed my mind about the series. The mini games are really fun. My only criticism is that it's not online and that is something fans have wanted for a while. Other than that, really good. I've not seen much marketing for this if I'm quite honest. Maybe that's affected sales??
@fox_mattcloud you're quite right, my friend...I have seen zero advertising and in fact my local Game store have not even bothered stocking it. Such a shame as me and my gang have laughed/fought so much with Star rush. It's one of the best.
Not sure about online myself...I'm very calm but can even see me rage quitting after a particularly annoying loss on a mini game hahaha 😊
I'm loving Colour Splash. Never played Sticker Star so I don't hold any animosity towards it in that regard. I do find the battle system a little annoying (I prefer it from the original) but it's not as bad as the 'end of life as we know it' reaction from the internet.
I also don't understand the comments about story. It's a frigging Mario game, what do you expect? Play a traditional RPG if story is important, or read a book. What next, full on voice acting for Mario and Goombas?
The writing is humorous and a pleasure to read. Oh and it looks amazing too! I highly recommend it if you're on the fence.
I got Paper Mario Color Splash yesterday. It was fun yet challenging.
Btw, never get interested with football game. Just Zero interest for me.
The spoon fed help mode is the big turn off for me!
When does Nintendo actually have memorable weeks in the UK? Honestly, though.....
I have still to get Color Splash, hopefully for Christmas if not before it, (funds are low), but I'll definitely be getting it.
@Toadsfriend If I could simply play online with MY FRIENDS, I would've bought that game I really love Mario Party games, they're really fun. I was able to play one of them with an emulator hack with my friends online on skype and it was a blast. But I can't do it with 3DS titles ;; I wouldn't even play with random people online, just my friends. It'd be the best thing ever! But nope, I don't have friends irl that have 3DS ;;
@Toadsfriend Star Rush's main downfall was it's timing... a handheld party game really needs to be released around the start of summer so that people can play it while on trips... once they've missed that window people are more interested in console games and handheld single-player games, which are more suited to being played at home.
Many are waiting until Christmas so that could be a factor in slumping sales.
Probably won't be seeing this again until Wii U's next game release in 2017.
Color Splash is actually a really fun game. I wasn't going to buy it, as I hated Sticker Star, but I recieved it as a gift, and It's been a blast. I'd actually place it as my second favorite in the series, above PM64, but below TTYD.
They should now make it a selects title.
Yes already
Skylanders should just end already. It's a waste of plastic.
Just started playing Color Splash today, great looking game and really enjoyable so far.
I'm glad I didn't listen to the negative remarks, worth it so far.
Btw, if you're waiting for the price to drop good luck, because it must be limited stock here in Australia.
I tried 6 different stores and got told they only had enough copies in to fill pre-orders.
I ended up getting it off eBay!
No copies anywhere.
Good ole Fifa @ number 1 it used to be Need for speed every Christmas. EA really know the connoisseur market!
Nintendo make the best games and they're kicked to death and criticised with barely a chart appearance. Who said life was fair?
@A01 One of my favorite James Bond movies had a similar issue ... Licence to Kill or License to Kill?
I'm glad I didn't let the British spelling bother me, since the film is great.
@KiWiiU_Freek Yup, I cant find it anywhere, not even EBGames in the middle of Adelaide, both stores, have any stock!
The end is nigh for wii u.
Skylander's will probably start selling on PS4 more with the fact that PS3 and PS4 are the only ones with the Crash Bandicoot edition. Other than that, there's not much out on Wii U for people to get excited about, and the one game every now and then, doesn't help the system's placement and setting. I agree with what people said about Mario Party though...it's a game that should have come out for the summer. It's that time of the year when people are going to be playing more inside than outside due to the upcoming weather. Star Rush is going to end up becoming a 'hard-to-find' game by summer, then people are going to be paying expensive prices for it, because nintendo will stop making a bunch of copies of it and stores won't stock as many...seen it happen too many times with many games. Everyone should have also known that the VR was going to dominate for now, with it's current release. Sony really advertised it to death and the preorders were almost sold out everywhere. Hopefully, sony keeps the momentum going on it and maybe I'll think about buying it (when the price goes down a little more), other than that, I think everyone's waiting for nintendo to announce their next console (NX) before they go crazy over nintendo right now. Maybe this will be a 'heads up' for nintendo to announce it...but, the next Pokemon games will take top spots for sure and Mario Run will definitely give them a huge profit!
I wonder how well Breath of The Wild will sell on Wii U.
Paper Mario: Colour Splash is a joy! I still miss companions and a decent story, but the game is definitly entertaining and it looks gorgeous.
@A01 that really is petty. since the spelling is correct. it's American English. it's just as understandable as British English. the game was released worldwide with an American spelling for ease and simplicity. one title. there's nothing wrong with that.
I have played the game and its really fun
@A01 but it is the correct spelling.
@A01
That's like saying I didn't buy it because there was a typo in the description. Who gives a rats?
@Clownshoes
Must be a lot of dumb people here so, me included.
@Clownshoes totally agree.
31st place so soon after release for a Paper Mario, "not too bad"? Alright, now we're reaching a little bit too much... I've never heard anyone praise that kind of performance before. Even with high profile releases, that's a very quick drop from the Top 20.
@Toadsfriend Something I'm looking into for Xmas, as thats when I'm with my gaming family and friends and this would be an awesome game for that, but I can't justify it for just two of us.
@bolt05 @KiWiiU_Freek it's crazy. I've been to Target, Big W and three different EB's and couldn't see it anywhere. Oh well I'm sure I'll find it one day
@Madden87 It was a deliberate dig by him. He enjoys trolling. We did our bit last week. The drop off was to be expected. We'd all pre ordered. And the Wii U audience is tiny. If you took out the Irish buyers from last week the sales would have been much worse.
I bet the Nintendo NX will sell really well just like paper Mario colour splash
@Martendo Can't make a chart presence to begin with if they release hardly any games for a significant interim...
Is anyone surprised by the lack of sales for wither Paper Mario Or Metroid federation force? If you do the exact opposite of what fans are asking you to do, don't expect the game to do gangbusters.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE A lot of people missed out on the argument of the millennium...
@firstnesfan It's poignant that there's more interest and praise for the Metroid 2 Fan Remake than Frankenstein Farce...
I would have bought it , but it needed more Toad.
@firstnesfan As if the older (Paper Mario) games did much better...
@PlywoodStick
You didn't miss out on the "argument of the millennium"? Your still trying to poke that fire. 😏
@LegendOfPokemon I never would have expected Disney to be the first of the plastic legion to go...
Have there been any actual sales numbers, because the list positioning tells us nothing at all?
As for the game, it's mediocre but mostly fun title that, like Sticker Star and SPM, does not deserve the moniker Paper Mario, as merely a papercraft aesthetic does not a PM title make. In anticipation of the release, I replayed both PM64 and TTYD and I can say, both unequivocally and with utter subjectivity, that its farce of a story does not hold a candle to its forebears. I admit that that has everything to do with Nintendo and IS capturing lightning in a bottle in two successive attempts, but oh well. There's a reason that Godfather Part 3 is so maligned.
@JohnGrey Care to elaborate? Because these days those game's stories just seem seriously overrated. At their cores, the plots are exactly the same as Colour Splash or even Sticker Star: collect X number of Macguffins to defeat the Big Bad. All they really had over the later games was a somewhat more varied cast and a little extra focus on Peach (she still does her info-gathering in Colour Splash, just not on-screen). TTYD also threw a curveball for the final boss, but many of it's chapters include serious amounts of padding to mask how short they'd honestly be.
Super is the only one that has a ''groundbreaking'' story compared to it's peers, due largely to the extensive backstories and how they affect the game's plot (backstories in TTYD are seldom relevant to the main story outside recruitments).
@King_Johobo
I know, so hard to find.
Target have it on their eBay store but not in store!
Wtf.
$64 with free postage.
Good luck.
@bolt05
Sad but true, I'll be pre ordering Zelda Botw that's for sure!
I'm buying as many Wii U games as I can (51 and counting) because ten years from now people will realise how good a console it was and it will become sought after and very collectible.
I mean if I can't find games for it now how the hell will you find them later?
Eh. Color Splash is a "take it or leave it" game, as much as NintendoLife doesnt want to see it as such. I'm not surprised it would step down in the charts so soon.
@KiWiiU_Freek Cheers mate I'll have to check it out!
@KiWiiU_Freek Agreed. Im going to buy a second Wii U to store in the box for another time... They ought to be thrown out dirt cheap come March next year...I reckon Wii's went for $50 in the end.
