Nintendo of America clearly likes to give retailers exclusives on limited edition systems, and has done so again with a rather interesting Lime Green New Nintendo 3DS XL Special Edition.
It comes bundled with a Virtual Console copy of Super Mario World, intriguingly, and it's available right now. It's only on sale via Amazon in North America so far - listings are below. Please note that these are affiliate links, so Nintendo Life will receive a small percentage of any sales.
Are any of you in North Americn tempted by this Special Edition New 3DS?
With thanks to Benson for the heads up.

What a bizarre game choice....
Seems like a neat bundle. I like the shade of green and the box art. Asides from that, there's not much else I can say; hopefully it comes to Europe.
Nintendo must not think too highly of their recent Yoshi games
Amazon couldn't negotiate for a current pack in? I mean super mario world is a fantastic game but...it is like not expensive... I would buy a different bundle and just buy smw via VC.
I wonder if this is the beginning of a better relationship between Nintendo and Amazon. They haven't sold much hardware directly for Nintendo, right?
That is lame, the smaller N3DS with faceplates and 3D Land is a much better deal.
I've always thought a lime green 3DS woukd look great... But I still can't convince myself to buy a N3DS due to the short stylus.
@Jimmy_G_Buckets They should of waited and done a Yoshi's Woolly World & Poochy Lime Green New Nintendo 3DS XL Bundle.
Lime green is my color, and I already got the go ahead from my better half soooo
@Mr_Zurkon I agree wholeheartedly. What were they thinking? Just the pale lime? It was cool when it was Gameboy Color, but a N3DSXL needs something special, and an actual 3DS game preinstalled to be worthwhile. An old $8 game with no effects is kinda stingy. I'd rather see a SNES edition with a handful of VC on it as a real deal. Or a limited version of Mario All-Stars on that XL if they REALLY wanted to make money!
How many 3ds do we need to own. I have 2. I feel most people must have 6 by now. how many special edition exclusive 3ds are they gonna come out with.
@VR32F1END Nintendo = stingy
@Jumpman you should get it. It's good. I have it for the original snes and wii u. I think I'll get it for the switch too. Nintendo just wants us to pay for the same games over and over again.
I love lime flavor
Lol 200 dollars when the Switch is right around the corner.
I'm still over here waiting for a black New 3DS...
Nintendo is killing it with nostilga this year between the NES Classic, Pokémon RBY on VC, and bundles like this. What a time to be alive and relive old memories while creating new ones with the next generation.
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy or a poochy coloured one with poochy spots!
If I didn't just get my red one, I would have gotten this xD
Very cool color scheme; very strange game choice.
But, see, I say that knowing full well I'd jump in for a sky blue N3DS with Pilotwings installed so I think this is just a case of it's not for me (but probably for lots of other people).
Interesting color choice. I like the box better than the color.
The color is cool. I wish I would have got this instead of that pukey burgundy.
It's sort of strange that they're just now releasing some more colors/styles of the New 3DS XL in NA, I think if they had released this and maybe the Galaxy style last year they would have a little more interest
Well, at least the SNES VC being exclusive to New models comes to some fruition. About time.
Ok...
@bolt05 Yes.
That color is so cool, and I like the idea of retro game bundles.
Damn that awesome color!
But I'm happy with my Hyrule XL & my N3DS Mario edition ones...
I'm waiting for Aqua x White or Pearl White with colorful buttons. I can die if it is real.
Cancel those Switch pre-orders, you guys, this is the next big thing!
What I want is the yellow Pikachu new 3DS LL that would be available in Japan along with Sun and Moon. I hope US can sell that version sometime as well.
@mystman12 The New 3DS stylus IS pretty terrible. Seems like 3DS styluses just get worse and worse with each model. The original 3DS stylus was pretty much perfect, though I guess having to expand/retract it every time you pull it out and put it back in was a little annoying, I can't recall. But I don't think it should be a large enough factor to keep you from getting one if you want it bad enough. If you're holding out for the Switch I understand, but I can't think of many 3DS games that actively use the stylus. But I know you're into programs like SmileBASIC, which I'm guessing is all stylus-related, in which case it could be a bit problematic.
I HIGHLY recommend Super Mario World for any New 3DS or Wii/Wii U owner. Brilliant game.
@LegendOfPokemon
Along with A Link to the Past and Super Metroid.
@PigmaskFan Of course! (And I own those as well.) 😃
@VR32F1END including a handful of VC games would have been much better, I like the idea of a game boy color scheme too.
from the galaxy to a shade of phlegm. i dunno about this.
@LegendOfPokemon
I got the game (Super Mario World) on Wii U.
@Anti-Matter I actually own the GBA remake of Super Mario World on my Wii U. Not sure if it is GBA physics or the Wii U controls but I find the original on New 3DS to be so much smoother and more fun to play.
@mystman12
It's what you do with it that counts.
So, uh, how bout that orange one Nintendo? Can we have that one?
My Game Boy Color was lime green. I'd love to have a lime green 3DS but the black interior kills it. Price doesn't help much either. Maybe if I can one day find a nice discount on it.
They should've released the blue one in America. After waiting so long, I finally bought an imported one at a marked up price!
..hmm..I still need to upgrade..
..and that color is sub lime..
I don't care if it's a good deal or not - Super Mario World is the best game ever
Super nice, but a couple years too late.
Nintendo really should offer a retro game bundle. I mean imagine the Super Famicom coloured 3DS (modified for other territories) with Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda ALTTP and Super Metroid already loaded. I'd be all over that.
Also really disappointed by their continuous failure to colour the insides of the N3DS XL. None have come close to the glorious Link Between Worlds 3DS XL (well maybe a few like the Persona Q one)
@FX102A
Same here!
$199 for a console that will fade out in a few Months?
Why is Nintendo always so hesitant to sell green hardware options? I'm so glad to see this, and it is the boost I need to finally buy a new 3DS. Bought.
They always have the ones I really want way after I've bought mine. Figures.
You have to imagine that the reason Nintendo doesn't do direct sales through Amazon is that Amazon wants deeper discounts on the wholesale prices they pay than Nintendo wants to give. Of course, Nintendo wants access to Amazon's customer base. A simple color scheme with a cheap, but still poplar, retro game probably allows Nintendo to justify the discount that Amazon demands.
It may not be as good deal as other 3DS bundles, given how cheap SMW is, but regardless it's nice to see a VC retro classic game get some love.
Not to mention, SMW used to be 50 bucks in 1991, and it's just as long (or possibly longer) as the NewSMB games, so it actually is a pretty big game for it's day.
I've always wanted a forest green unit yet all Ninty gives us are the lime greens. Ah well, I love my white n3ds.
This is a really odd bundle. Super Mario World is $11.99 on the eShop in Canada. Unless you've been waiting to buy a New 3DSXL, who would get this? It's barely even limited edition because its just green lol.
On a different note, I was skeptical of SNES games on the N3DS but i'm sold now. Mega Man X looked great. I'm thinking about picking up about 10 games and having a mobile SNES experience whenever I want.
I can't buy this console in the UK however I really love the box design, I get a nostaglia feeling inside when I see it. I would be pretty jealous if the design of the 3DS was that of a snes pad design, also I am prety sure that the U.S and (or) Europe got a Yoshi edition of this? I know it hasn't been announced yet by *Nintendo but I would so love a snes mini to come out in 2017.
*Then again I think every Nintendo fan would wanna buy one!
@NinjaWaddleDee @GreatPlayer Fade out? Switch around the corner? Guys, 3DS isn't getting replaced by the Switch, it will get it's own successor in due time.
And honestly, the New 3DS absolutely kills the Switch as a portable in every way.
Shame it doesn't have coloured buttons, it's a missed opportunity for a proper SNES tie-in.
@LemonSlice I'm sorry, but what? Nintendo put both of their divisions together for a reason. Switch is the successor to BOTH consoles.
@LemonSlice
True. It is already confirmed that the Switch is single screen only and it's very evident that 3DS support will be going for a good while. So unless their next truly dedicated handheld goes single screen (something I think would end up being less than well-received for games like Pokemon or other games that have benefited from dual-screen gaming), calling the Switch the successor of the 3DS is major bs. We've confirmation as well that WiiU/3DS won't be backwards compatibIe physically and, with a single screen, it's practically inconceivable that they'd be digitally compatible unless the developers went back to completely reformat/recode older titles that use both screen. And if that is done, I highly doubt we'd just get those "free". I certainly can see GameFreak/The Pokemon Company doing something decent with the Switch but highly doubt even hey would find it practical for the main line games after so very long with dual screen capabilities. Sure, we had only one screen during the days of the GB/GBC/GBA/GBASP but the revolutionary steps taken when the DS came into existence changed how the experience tremendously for the series.
@NinjaWaddleDee I don't believe that for a second. The Switch takes absolutely no ideas from the 3DS sphere (except maybe well, the cartridges). In the end it's just a different take on the WiiU concept and looks laughably like it's early prototypes, in many ways devolving from the finished product.
And the "play your portables on your TV" and "play your console games on a portable" part? It's already been done to death, and has never been particularly well received. There really isn't much new here.
Portable and console gaming are two very different worlds, and being forced to make games that fit between the two very different approaches to development doesn't allow designers to play towards any of their strengths.
There's still a wide gap left for the next generation of true portables, a gap that neither smartphones nor the Switch will ever fill.
@ShikabaneHime13 Thanks for the support.
getting 9 of these
Only Nintendo can get away with bundling glorified ROM dumps with their hardware.
@sillygostly Least it wasn't a rom dump of City Connection or NES Mario Bros. Haha.
