If you were sad about Splatoon Splatfest events coming to an end, then we have some good news for you - if you live in Europe, that is.
Nintendo have teamed up with ESL, the world's largest esports company, to bring 6 months of Splatoon online tournaments for Euro gamers.
At gamescom in Cologne, the top four ranked teams from ESL Play's early Splatoon qualifiers were getting ready for their final battle, as they were greeted on stage by Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata and Splatoon producer Hisashi Nogami. Here's what Mr Shibata had to say:
I'm happy to announce that, starting in early September, Nintendo and ESL will team up for official online Splatoon tournaments in Europe. They'll last for six months, so we hope you'll all look forward to taking part.
If you haven't yet taken Splatoon for a spin you will be pleased to know that from 18th August until 1st September, you can take part in the free online demo for Splatoon Summer Testfire 2016.
Stay tuned for more information on ESL online Splatoon tournaments. It's likely we'll hear something about North American tournaments soon also.

Cool! Hope it comes to the US!
This sounds promising,I wonder how it'll work?6 months from September takes us up till February, right before the NX launch. With this and the new global testfire it seems they're giving it a final push in the Wii U's end days, possibly to build hype for Splatoon 2?Or it could be because they have absolutely nothing else for us.Probably the latter.
Need more information but it could be good.
Anybody remember Wii Sports Club? Nintendo pushed that pretty hard before the Wi U launched, showing off baseball and golf. Then it released the 5 Wii Sports games separately for $10 each, but never added on any other sports.
It's relevant b/c it was online, and I remember they used to do free online weeks every few months. I think they released the package retail a couple of years ago but I haven't seen it marketed or on the eShop since.
Wii had a bunch of sequels to keep gamers interested -
Wii Sports - Resort
Wii Play - Motion
Wii Fit - Plus
Wii U not so much.
Wii Sports Club -
Wii Fit U -
Nintendo Land -
How did Nintendo Land not get a sequel? Nintendo Kingdom, amiibo Kingdom. No updates or DLC or amiibo support either.
It's nice that they are still pushing Splatoon, but it seems like the company as a whole has stopped making games. NX launch window should have about 20 first party games.
@rjejr That's because those Wii games each sold at least 20 million units, which most definitely isn't the case for those Wii U games. Next to that, making Wii games take less resources than Wii U games because the Wii U had HD graphics. Nintendo themselves said that they had trouble with HD development and that's why they didn't have a lot of games ready at launch.
Even now, they don't seem to have a grip at HD, as they keep delaying their games and release small, cheap games like AC:AF to fill their schedule.
Hopefully they can get their act together once the NX releases, but if it's a hybrid like the rumours say it is, they can focus on the NX, instead of dividing their attention between two platforms, which should help.
OT: I wonder how those tournaments will work, but it looks like a cool idea
New missions in mynintemdo.
@rjejr "NX launch window should have about 20 first party games."
You're right, it SHOULD. But then we thought the Wii U would have a great launch given the similar drought that we endured at the end of the Wii's life. What we got was NSMB Wii U and Nintendo Land.
I don't understand why Nintendo Europe don't have a Treehouse Stream from Gamescom??? Even if they are just showing a few games off and the LEGEND Satoru Shibata introduces the stream. I know they do that at E3 but surely Nintendo Europe could've done their take on it???
@SLIGEACH_EIRE If they told Miyamoto to just work on Pikmin 4, a game he can't really mess up, then we would have those 20 games ;P. I'm sure there are other people at Nintendo open to making another F-Zero! And another Mario Kart entry would be an excellent game for the console! I'm still amazed how fun 8 is and how great the music and graphics are. Hopefully they can get a better multiplayer this time!
And also it was weird how the Wii U didn't have that many experimental new small IPs. The 3DS had games like Pushmo, Dillon's Westurn Rolling, and Box Boy. Those games can't take that long to make, can they? I would be happy with at least 5 of those kinds of games and then 5-10 main series Nintendo games!
Then if some of those Nintendo games are remakes, like the supposed Super Smash Bros NX version, they could easily make 5-10 games on that alone! Many people like me would love a Sunshine HD (with a better 120 star reward to stop people from complaining) along with any other First Party Nintendo game. Heck, a SSB Melee HD would make the NX fly like hot cakes! And it doesn't seem that games like Hyrule Warriors are opposed to ports either! MAKE IT HAPPEN NINTENDO!
On a sidenote, Game Freak let Genius Sonority make a Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness sequel! I prefer that than another Shuffle or another small portable game (assuming most of the staff hasn't left yet like Rare has)!
I may check the online tournaments n see what it's all about.
If they start in september then that means it'll run till March next year, hmm... 🤔
I've missed Shibata glad to see him talking again.

You're not helping. And that 20 might have been a bit exaggerated, my family has a bad habit of that. But there should be something. But you're right, there probably won't be.

Treehouse is the name of NoA's localization division. NoE's division could have been named Redundanthouse, you know, since having 2 English translations on games is just silly.
"Watch Nintendo Redundanthouse broadcast, this Friday 12:00 BST!"
