Well, still not on board with the whole idea, but I did enjoy the video @AlexOlney. You're one of those guys that we over here label as "impossible to hate". And I like British humor, which you have plenty of, so all ingredients for pleasant viewing material. You would probably even be capable of making an enjoyable video out of bad news, so hats off to you, sir!

With the PS4 "Neo" and Project Scorpio coming, I don't think this new NX console can afford to be "slightly less powerful" than the PS4 and Xbox One.

I honestly really just wanna frikin' see this thing already.

Huh...from what I see this whole NX thing is more or less to be a home console with control panels which can also be used as a portable console that support cartridges like 3DS...

Anyway 1st August is on its way and we will be able to get more information from Nintendo, so shall we just...you know...stay clam and let go of the rumors.

Glad to see the bloopers back at the end, one of the recent videos didn't have them, after I sat through 5 minutes of loading screens, I felt trolled.

Question - is the Sim slot/card part of the rumour or just Alex wishful thinking? I can see how a data plan could come in handy, but I don't expect them to have 1, but a slot for BYO might be possible. That way if kids run up big bills it's on the parents, not Nintendo.

If any of this pans out, I do think Wiimotes are likely, not slim NES controllers, so that tablet mock up may be close.

well, this terrifying rumor does line up with the intelligent idea of unifying development teams so as to avoid future game droughts. so i guess it will be for the best. nx could be an hd-capable hybrid with enough power to play ps3.5 games and maybe sell as much as 3ds+wii u did, which would make it a hard platform to ignore.

If they really want to go this way Nintendo NX should:

• Be smartphone size, not tablet size.
• Be also a phone (or sell two versions, one of them a fully operational smartphone).
• Use thier own OS and their own "App Store".
• But also have all the apps that people won't live without (instagram, twitter... you now, all the social stuff).

Basically, put people in the situation where they can choose between an android smartphone and the Nintendo NX. Because most people won't carry both or buy both.

Then, they can continue to make some games for the Androids and iPhones, and use them to lure people into their system, which would be the only one to have all the major releases, like zelda.

Would not be surprised if the console is less powerful, since the SNES days Nintendo has had success with less power but intuitive play. I'll still buy it even if it's s#!t, let's be honest.

I hope this isn't true, this idea sounds stupid and would probably put nintendo in dire straits. I hope they just release a console that can run 4k on par with ps4k and xboxone s!

@EXP it's a handheld dude. A handheld more powerful then the Wii U is fantastic.

Reason why you are annoyed is because you are treating the NX as a console so you are comparing it to the competition.

Its not a home console. Its not even a hybrid. This is a new handheld. I really don't understand how people can feel disappointed with a handheld that will push out games like Zelda and dragon quest XI.

3DS needs replacing and I am excited about Nintendo next handheld.

@kobashi100 that's quite simple man, if the NX is capable of running The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, that's a "last gen" console a game.
Then people will immediately think that the NX is indeed a home console, or a hybrid console.

The way Eurogamer and Digital Foundry is putting the NX is that is indeed a handheld with lots of power, but just like YouTubers have said, I feel there is missing information.

I am one of those who consider this is a hybrid and not a powerful handheld. Maybe not as powerful as current base gen home consoles, but that's capable of enough to also have games on the go; with is freaking amazing on its own accord.

@Tops You and me both, this is becoming obnoxious at this point. Wishing Nintendo would say something about this, so people can stop assuming stuff and put rumours as facts.

@CidMaik Oh sorry I think I confused it with Pokémon Sun/Moon (10 am in NZ and I'm still half dreaming...), on 1st August there will be updates for the new Pokémon, and we won't get anything regarding NX until September.

I thought Nintendo was completely going away from Wii U,it's a reversal of it.Not only that this sort of setup has been done before,can't remember it's name but it came our 3 years ago.It was a tablet with detachable controlers.Maybe one if you kown it's what it's called.If true I hope its lot more to it.Maybe multiple device.There's been some 3rd party's saying very positive praise for NX,like take 2,I just can't see them given a thumbs up on this.This will not sell in England or .U.S.A ect Japan yes.

@kobashi100 Simply put the article does not mention it's NX portable in otherwords a replacement for 3DS,there's no need to replace that yet it's doing ok for now, its wii u console that needs replacing and Nintendo stated that the NX is home console.So this has been done before mate in tablet form with detachable controlers.

Nintendolife is really milking this Eurogamer rumour lately I think it could be true to a point, but knowing Nintendo, we only know a fraction of what the NX will end up being.

@Arctic_Nights yes, but that particular Nvidia rumor was published in 2009; the 3DS launched in 2011. It's a bit different now considering the timing, little will change between now and lunch

lemme just add: the detachable controllers can also mean dual screen. when in 'gamepad mode', the screen would be in landscape and the controllers are attached on it's sides that way. in portable mode, the screen would be in sorta portrait, but with the top half and bottom half serving as the dual screens, the controllers attached to what are now it's sides then. remember that the system is supposed to have edge to edge screen area or close to it, so aspect ratios will be fine, and opens the possibility that the thing can fold in half. just my dos centavos.

Good video. Cheesy and simple as it is I think the visual mock-ups highlighted some key ideas people seem to gloss over when considering this potential scenario for the NX.

I've come around to this idea to the point where I want it to play out. Let's see how it goes. I'd almost be disappointed if it was multiple complete devices at the outset now. I still want a dedicated monster Nintendo console in my entertainment system, but I want Nintendo to have huge success with their next wave of games and hardware more. I think this scenario may have a better chance.

I really don't get the hope that it's identical to PS4 or NEO. What you should really want is for Nintendo to have no recourse but to make games for that platform. So, I guess if you think this is going to be a huge flop you may get your wish! But that's just late night babbling. G'night.

Oh yeah, Nintendo, please at the very, very least... pretty please tell us when the reveal will be? Just a month right now would be okay for me, but a date would be fantastic. Maybe a silhouette of the thing... babbling again.

So, I was just begging Nintendo to give us maybe even a silhouette of the machine in the announcement for when the reveal will come (yeah, I know. riiight) but I imagined the announcement image:

This rumour has ruffled a few feathers, that's for sure. But as we all know well and good, there's no smoke without a blazing fire going on somewhere, so let's look at it this way:

1) Nintendo haven't gone with AMD as the portable component (which was planned all along) had needs that were not being met.
2) It's rumored to be an over-clocked Tegra in the thing, which is quite a good indication that it's the latest model in there at retail. Possible due to the burn felt by Nvidia after the new generation kicked off, and also possible that Nintendo have struck a massive deal with them to get it cheaper.
3) If it has a dock, it's possible that it's not just a dock; the SCD patent has been passed and paid for, and this may be more to do with their secrecy than you suspect.
4) It's one device the serves 2 puroses, that will have the full weight of Nintendo and their partners behind it. That's insane.
5) Ports are likely, so get ready for a complete version of Smash Bros. with all the 3DS stuff in glorious HD.
6) Luigi's Mansion 3 would be awesome on it.

It could all be wrong though, and they could very well be making a straight-up console. People might be seeing a new handheld and getting confused.

Didnt nintendo say it was a home console? Like i said before i doubt its a handheld when their mobile pokemon doing so well and more mobile games coming. But we will see in a few months.

This rumor just makes no sense. This thing would be as bulky if not more then the Wii u controller. Nintendo said this new system is not the Wii u so I just am not going with this rumor. I can't wait to hear the real facts though.

My fairly unimportant NX thought for the morning, which we've probably already covered, apologies for my senility, but it seemed interesting to me waking up this morning.

What if it's not NX - as in the letters "N" and "X", "Nintendo eXperience", but N and "cross" (see Monster Hunter X, apparently pronounced "cross" in Japan.) Nintendo Cross-platform. Cross-over, Cross-trainer, and the 1 I finally settled on, Cross-play. Which is a very bad choice b/c Adam Sandler probably owns the rights to "X-Play" from his long running TV show, and X-Play looks too much like Xbox, Xbox360, Xbox One and Xbox One 1. But we are talking about the company that named it's past consoles "Wii" and "Wii U", so the naming department obviously isn't it's strength. Nintendo CrossPlay kind of fits a hybrid. It could still be NX for short. And it brings to mind cos-play, which is big in Japan. And fits in with the new slogan. Maybe bold the X button on top, or draw an X in between the 4 buttons?

I tried to fit "cross" and "Transformer" together, to take account of the attachable controllers that attach together to make a controller while the tablet is in the base, but Cross-former sounds stupid, and Nitneod Transformer, well no probably not.

tl;dr It's not NX, Nintendo X-ray, it's Ncross, Nintendo Cross-over.

I don't mind them re-branding the Nvidia Shield by writing Nintendo on it, but if they are re-branding the Wikipad (makes CrossPlay sound good, doesn't it?) that may be taking things a bit too far.

Funny thing, the Wikipad (still can't believe somebody actually named it that) runs on, drumroll please, the NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 mobile processor. Coincidence?

Saw a big $399 X1S ad in the Target flyer this morning. I guess that's good b/c it makes the Wii U look like a better value at $299, right?

You're a marketing guy, do you think 3 X1S models were really necessary? I get $399 2TB for the hardcore gamers who might own a 4k TV, and $299 500GB for the budget minded, but how many $349 1TB consoles are they planning on selling, and too whom? My experience is people say like they choices, but then they don't like acting on it. I think 1 Wii U, the Deluxe at $299, would have gotten Wii U off to a better start, even if it cost them a few bucks. 8GB no game was never going to sell, even at $249.

People only think that, because in some twisted way, seeing a patent of it, and seeing a large magnet appear as a tool in Zelda Breath of the Wild, must "surely" mean that this is going to be a thing for the NX.

I think those kind of individuals are your victims of conspiratorial YouTube videos, not someone as inquisitive and level-headed as me...

@HSuzumiyaVI Yep. X2 chipset with Pascal GPU is what I've been hoping for if this scenario comes to fruition. It could be great and even in the realm of 3rd parties bringing current PS4/XB1 games over (especially ones based on Unreal Engine). Nothing but circumstantial evidence that Nintendo is going to use it, though. Especially since pricing on it is going to be a big issue that Nintendo hasn't nailed at launch very often. In my dreams and desires, it will use the latest Tegra chips from Nvidia, maybe even a bit customized and it will make the console aspect competitive with what will be the 3.5-year old PS4/XB1 in power. It's a winning combination I think, but I just don't know enough to feel any kind of confidence in it.

Oh God, please no. That has to be one of the WORST rumors I have heard throughout this entire period of rumor spreading.

Not to bash religious people, but it sounds like a Christian console and also: NX was only ever a code name, consoles/handhelds are never named after their code name, so NX means nothing.

Iwata even once said that he didn't even remember how they came up with that codename in the first place, so no one really knows (or will ever know) what it stands for.

But if we had to speculate, then Nintendo eXperience, or to go with the train of thought of Nintendo themselves and how they wish to position the NX, simply New eXperience could suffice for the origin of the code name. Someone somewhere (I've read so much lately, don't know if it was a website or a YouTube comment) theorized that it could also simply stand for Nintendo 10, as in the Roman number, because adding up all the consoles and handhelds will amount to that.

Could be X marks the spot, and as men of our age may remember, in the eighties and early nineties, X was also a letter that indicated mystery and excitement, so a device with an X in it was simply cool...

Anyway, like I said before, I'm suspecting it to be no more than a code name and the final device will probably have another name. And of course NX isn't one device but Nintendo's new ecosystem on which all devices will run, so NX's, not THE NX, but we've already discussed that one...

And that Wiki Pad thing? Already done and dusted, my friend. Not new...

As for your question of today: personally, I don't particularly like all these iterations of the same devices, although to be honest: in this and the last generation, they also brought improvements, such as being more quiet, more energy efficient, and the coming generation will add more horsepower to the mix.

That last bit may hurt existing owners, so it's understandable that people won't be very enamored with that if they have already invested in a current gen console.

BUT...

From a marketing point of view, it's nothing but pure gold: get people hooked on a device (or a brand) and then, entice them with a version of that very same device that they already like and use, but make it even better, sleeker looking and so forth. Hence all the "slim", "v2" and "Mini" devices. And even with today's access to knowledge and information, people still gobble it all up like crazy, so yeah, it works. Sometimes it is a bit crazy though, but it is indeed customer-driven. Xbox 360 a ugly big machine with a fan that sounds like an airplane and too many RROD problems? Make a smaller, quieter version that's even a bit faster to boot. Hard disk too small? Bring out a 1TB version. They only move in that direction if their target audience appears to want that, so it is simply acting on demand, whether it'll be successful in the end or not, since consumers are indeed fickle and sometimes it will never be enough.

Agreed on the whole Wii U debacle, though. Never understood that 8GB version, and even the 32GB was pretty sparse to say the least..

It's just a tilt and tumble controller, aka motion sensing device, with some regular buttons added for maximum control. It actually works pretty good, even though it looks odd.

The Wiki pad doesn't work as a standalone: it draws its power from the tablet, and it needs to be synced to a device.

@aaronsullivan there is a plan to use this as a Trojan horse into the living room again, Nintendo likely isn't using the form factor and Reggie called it a platform, so multiple NX, or it is a hybrid and it'll play Project Sonic 1080p 60/30

I stopped listening to these rumours when NVidia claimed they weren't releasing anything in the smartdevices...

what I didn't know is that Nintendo would get the handheld to be powered by tegra, hell, k1 or Tegra 3 was rumoured to be in the 3DS.

@rjejr First I thought your work was coming to visit you, then I thought it might be family or friends. but then I thought: "no, that can't be it. It has to be something else, so I Googled "Company TV Show" and that came up. Might interest you, by the way: it's a mini series about the CIA during the cold war.

@ThanosReXXX We did have a nice time thanks. Though the version of Trivial Pursuit board game we had, 20th anniversary edition, was horrible. We'd never played it before, and w'ell never play it again. Sticking w/ the pop culture ones from now on. I need to find card sets as the rest of the set is fine.

@rjejr Ah, Trivial Pursuit. II still have the original set with one expansion set, don't even remember which one. We used to play it a lot, but that has now literally been decades ago. I don't have all that much interest left in board games and such. If any kind of non-videogame related game is played, then it will be cards or dice. Accompanied by alcoholic beverages and snacks.

@ThanosReXXX After about 20 questions and no pieces in TP we played a board game called Exago, it's like Connect 4 but w/ 4 players. Much better. And yes, alcohol, snacks and pizza, some things never change.
