As a sign that Microsoft Studios, Mojang and Nintendo didn't quite think it through with the 17th June retail release of Minecraft: Wii U Edition in North America (E3 and all that), it's sent out a press release today as a reminder that it's now in stores. The title's been available as a download since late 2015, while the Super Mario Mash-Up DLC has been a free extra for some time.
For some, of course, it's all about physical retail editions, so the disc version is sure to be tempting (it's due on 30th June in Europe).
The disc version is the same in terms of content, of course, as the eShop equivalent, but has the Super Mario DLC (and other free starter packs) on the disc rather than as optional downloads.
Minecraft: Wii U Edition has consistently performed well in the eShop charts, so it'll be interesting to see whether the disc version can also perform well.
Have you been holding out for Minecraft: Wii U Edition on disc? Let us know in the comments.

Where is the rest of Story Mode?!?!
I can't wait for Minecraft: Block of the Wild.
And by that, I mean a Zelda mashup.
@Zach777 Yeah that's what I've been saying! In Europe we haven't even had it yet. But it's awful for people who've bought the season pass and can't play it. I would complain like crazy
Fingers crossed for a 3DS version now
@Zach777 Perhaps Travelers Tales is waiting to finish up with episodes and are gonna release them all on one disc?
I've been holding out! I am looking forward to my first physical copy of Minecraft. I ALMOST picked it up elsewhere but it makes me happy to have it on Nintendo and happier to have the Matio content.
Will grab a physical disc copy some time, but will likely wait for this to go on sale. Really hoping they one day patch it for larger map sizes and inventory on the GamePad.
bought today for my son. he loves minecraft so he will be very happy. Plus I also bought Kirby today too
@tysonfury Mojang said that they could only get Version 0.9.6 running on 3DS if I recall correctly. However, that was the original 3DS, but I don't imagine they would release the game on New 3DS only, that would severely limit the profit the 3DS version would take in.
I've been waiting for the disc to buy it for my kids.
So what will be people's excuse now for not buying it? Oh wait, yeah, "the map is too small." pfft! Whiners will always whine.
@DoctorOverbuild The Season Pass wasn't available for purchase last time I checked. Unless is available now, nobody has been able to buy it.
@Nico07 In single player you can use the GamePad for inventory and crafting.
@Dark-Link73 Oh really? It still sucks for people who bought episode 1! Promises broken. They should not be allowed to get away with it
I will pick this up if and when it goes on sale. We have it like 5 other times on various formats but that Mario content is worth it alone.
@Dark-Link73 I don't believe it does. As of about two weeks ago when I tried our digital copy of the game this wasn't an option. It simply shows a "Minecraft" logo on the bottom screen if you're not mirroring your television screen. If mirroring you can pause the game and go into your inventory with the stylus, but you can't have a dedicated inventory screen that you can use while playing the game.
I'll grab it on disc when it hits $20 or less. This week I have Tokyo Mirage Sessions SE and Mighty No 9 to pick up.
@Nico07 No you're right. There isn't a dedicated screen for the inventory. But you can do most of the functions with the tuchscreen. The only thing you can't do is "drag" items, and because of that, you can't do "classic crafting". But you can do regular crafting on the touchscreen.
I thin the main reason Mojang didn't bother with a dedicated inventory screen is because one does "off tv play", then that dedicated screen would be useless.
@DoctorOverbuild Perhaps the sales were not there to warrant the development of the DLC. Sadly, a lot of developers do that. Wii U owners didn't get all the Batman origins season pass (Nintendo issued refunds although idk if it was them or WB who forked out the money), or do you remember that no console got the remainding DLC for LEGO The Hobbit?
As long as nobody gets charged for an unfinished product, there's nothing that can be done about such "unfulfilled promises".
I already got it from the eShop and it is great with the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack.
The Super Mario Mashup pack has made me want this game, but I can't buy it since I just spent all my money on other games I wanted. Uggh!...
I usually don't mind getting indies digitally, but because I can get a discount on physical games, and because Minecraft is among the priciest eshop games available, this is likely how I'd get it. I'll probably wait for a sale, and take the discount off that.
I decided to wait so I could trade it in later if In ever get a good PC. Having a lot of fun, this has kinda taken over my life since I bought it, haha.
Got the disc last Friday so it wouldn't take up space on the small hard drive.
I'll definitely be picking up a physical copy.
