It's the middle of the week, which means it's Media Create Japanese charts time. This week is all about new releases, and also provides a reminder as to why the sporadic third-party support for Nintendo's hardware can be a notable negative.
On the software front new releases on Sony systems lead the way - on the face of it Dragon Quest Heroes II: The Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End has had a strong launch, though it's down on the equivalent figures for its predecessor. The first Nintendo release to be found is Kirby: Planet Robobot in 6th place, and it's still doing reasonably well; results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PS4] Dragon Quest Heroes II: The Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End (Square Enix, 05/27/16) – 184,820 (New)
- [PSV] Dragon Quest Heroes II: The Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End (Square Enix, 05/27/16) – 120,664 (New)

- [PS4] Overwatch (Square Enix, 05/26/16) – 58,363 (New)
- [PS4] Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator (Arc System Works, 05/26/16) – 17,829 (New)
- [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo, 04/29/16) – 17,313 (285,647)
- [PS4] Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (SIE, 05/10/16) – 10,040 (159,919)
- [PS3] Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator (Arc System Works, 05/26/16) – 9,385 (New)
- [3DS] Yo-kai Sangokushi (Level-5, 04/02/16) – 7,493 (525,985)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SIE, 03/19/15) – 6,335 (780,431)
- [PSV] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2016 (Konami, 04/29/16) – 5,816 (131,889)
- [PS4] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2016 (Konami, 04/29/16) – 5,685 (146,132)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 5,225 (1,372,492)
- [PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2016 (Konami, 04/29/16) – 5,140 (85,532)
- [PSV] ClaDun Sengoku (NIS, 05/26/16) – 4,459 (New)
- [Wii U] Super Mario Maker (Nintendo, 09/10/15) – 4,412 (882,905)
- [PS4] Homefront: The Revolution (Spike Chunsoft, 05/19/16) – 3,781 (13,204)
- [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 (Square Enix, 03/24/16) – 3,420 (599,789)
- [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, 02/18/16) – 2,903 (164,951)
- [3DS] My Hero Academia: Battle For All (05/19/16) – 2,810 (8,417)
Moving on to hardware, both the PS4 and Vita see increases that have no doubt been helped by multiple new releases. There are small increases for the New 3DS LL (XL) and Wii U, while the 3DS family is still second overall when combining the different models. The results below have last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 24,813 (18,430)
- PlayStation Vita – 14,956 (10,954)
- New 3DS LL – 12,394 (12,051)
- Wii U – 4,340 (4,109)
- New 3DS – 2,495 (2,552)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,017 (1,001)
- 3DS – 696 (700)
- 3DS LL – 78 (103)
- Xbox One – 61 (72)
That's it for another week in the Japanese charts - save us Kirby, you're our only hope.

Sony is dominating in Japan
For a second the article's title had me thinking Sony was releasing a new handheld.
Then I realized Sony never had any faith in handhelds anyway.
Whoa, the PS4 version of a game beating the Vita version for once. Still hope Vita version makes it over. A handheld open world ARPG that isn't SAO would be absolutely lovely.
Nintendo ain't doing so well.
Who would buy a standard 3DS over the "New" version? They must be blowing them out or something.
3DS line for 2016 is pretty small, no wonder sales are slow.
Ace 6 releases in nine days and should do pretty decent.
@Nintendude789 And yet combined 3DS family sales are still above Vita, so it's not the end of the world.
All the new titles get a huge buying bump in Japan. Staying on the list after that fact is only noteworthy thing here.
@ThomasBW84 The article title "New Sony System Releases" makes it sound as if Sony has released new Hardware. Its slightly misleading. You may want to consider changing it a little.
It was on the cards
Terrible sales all around. Even Dragon Quest Heroes 2 launched with just 60% of the launch sales of Dragon Quest Heroes 1 despite being available on one additional platform (the Vita).
Well done to Vita for hitting the 5 million milestone in Japan. Shame that success wasn't replicated elsewhere...
@Nintendude789
Sales are low because market saturation and most the heavy hitters are hitting in the second half the of the year. We have had some games like Kirby and dragon quest monsters do a lot but the system sellers and the million sellers all hit in the second half of the year.
Monster Hunter Stories
Dragon Quest XI
Pokemon Sun/Moon
Yokai Watch 3
Puzzles and Dragons X
Etc.
go kirbs
Man....I don't know which sells most in Japan anymore. Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy or Pokemon?
Whoever has a Wii U, I have a Runbow code from the recent Humble Bundle promotion:
B0LS70X13SXQD0GV
Hope it still works but I think it expires in a day or two so better use it fast.
@Yorumi I miss the glory days or when handhelds sold like hotcakes.
Nintendo needs to rebrand and stop pulling their over controlling stick in the mud attitudes. I love ya Ninty but get your heads out of your butts. Hoping for something powerful and killer with NX and I've been saying this but for poops sake learn to market.
@Socar None of them. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is the biggest selling game in Japan this generation.
NL "There are small increases for the New 3DS LL (XL) and Wii U, while the 3DS family is still second overall when combining the different models":
The number for 3DS/LL/New/NewLL is 15,663, not too far from supposedly dead Vita's 14,956.
@wazlon Thanks! Downloading now...
Aww I need to finish the first dq heroes since I switched to pc.
Well its not that bad (splatoon,kirby and yokai are still hanging in there! )
@Anti-Matter noted
@Clacko You're welcome
@ikki5 It has more to do with the impact Draque has in Japan.
@Anti-Matter if you're done with Sony, why do you like the PS5 so much?
@Groovz
Why did you reply on my old comment?
Of course I have different idea about PS4 during year 2016 and after pandemic.
Used to be I dislike PS4 for not knowing more about 3rd party kids games I can play but from year to year, I discovered more interesting 3rd party kids games that slowly changed my mind to like PS4 even more especially during pandemic.
PS5 also have a lot of 3rd party kids games and that's why I like PS5 very much.
Btw, I have deleted my embarrassing comment during year 2016.
@Anti-Matter because i wanted to see what your oldest comment was. I found that gem of a comment and couldn't resist teasing you about it
