The Pokémon Company, once again, hasn't disappointed after promising more details for Pokémon Sun and Moon. It's unveiled the Legendary Pokémon, the Rotom Pokédex and more besides for the new games; it's all rather exciting.
The official website is full of details and art, so as we did with the Starter Pokémon and boxart reveals we've compiled them into a handy gallery below.
Enjoy!
Legendary Pokémon
Solgaleo
Since ancient times, Solgaleo has been honored as an emissary of the sun. It is referred to with reverence as "the beast that devours the sun." Solgaleo's body holds a vast amount of energy, and it shines with light when it's active. It has a flowing mane with a remarkable resemblance to the sun. Its signature move is Sunsteel Strike, an attack that charges at an opponent with the force of a meteor, disregarding the target's Ability.
Solgaleo's Ability is Full Metal Body, a new Ability that no previous Pokémon has had. With the Full Metal Body Ability, a Pokémon's stats will not be lowered by the effects of an opponent's moves or Ability.
Lunala
Since ancient times, Lunala has been honored as an emissary of the moon. It is referred to with reverence as "the beast that calls the moon." Lunala is constantly absorbing light and converting it into energy. With its wings spread to absorb the surrounding light and glittering like a crescent moon, it resembles a beautiful night sky. Lunala's signature Moongeist Beam attack releases an ominous beam of light that disregards the target's Ability.
Lunala's Ability is Shadow Shield, a new Ability that no previous Pokémon has had. With the Shadow Shield Ability, a Pokémon will take less damage from an attack that lands when the Pokémon has full HP.
Rotom Pokédex
The Pokédex is a convenient tool that records information about the Pokémon you see and catch during your adventure. In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, your character receives a special Pokédex from Professor Kukui to support you in your travels. It's known as the Rotom Pokédex, and it's inhabited by Rotom, a Pokémon with the power to reside in various electronic appliances. It does much more than record Pokémon info—it sparkles with its own personality. The Rotom Pokédex shows your current location and your next destination, and it also gives you advice on where to go next, based on the conversations you have with others! It's likely to be of great help to you in many parts of your adventure.
The Rotom Pokédex is an extremely rare device. There are only a few Trainers that have one, even in the Alola region.
Alola Region
Visit the Alola Region!
Your new adventures in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon will take place on the tropical islands of the Alola region! The Alola region centers around four islands rich in natural beauty and an artificial island. Many Pokémon that have never been seen before occupy these islands.
The world of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon is filled with many colorful people in addition to the fascinating Pokémon. Meet some of the folks you'll encounter as you travel through the Alola region.
There you have it, lots of intriguing details and art for Pokémon Sun and Moon. Which of the reveals has you most excited? Let us know in the comments.

Dexter can suck it. Rotom pokedex is where it is at.
Why am I so hyped for a darn Pokedex?!
A ton of great infos, sounds like it will be a lively region to explore, but they are so mean in keeping the new monsters so secret, we got nothing new about them, not even a silhouette XD
The only thing I found weird is Solgaleo's ability, am I missing a detail or as far as they revealed it sound exactly like the already existing Clear Body? ^_^;
I can't wait for this one.
Region looks small (excepting water dwelling monsters).
Dat pokedex has a freeform display.
I'm still holding out hope that they will offer a camera control option using the c stick to new 3DS owners. It looks like this game was designed to have a dynamic camera.
Does the RotomDex possess combat capabilities? Beyond attempts to use it as a ninja star, that is.
I can see the 7.8s already...
I devoured all the info and... It's okay.
A bit disapointed with Lunala's typing and Ability, Solgaleo gained appreciation in my eyes, I'm curious about that pokedex and I'm afraid the region may be a bit small. I'm curious if the pokedex QR codes will be the same as in Pokedex 3D pro. That cyan thing behind the HP/status bar in battle - I hope it is a placeholder... The game looks good for a pokemon game but I don't expect it to be revolutionary.
Aaaand of course 7.8/10 - too much water
Oh man, I'm so excited for that RotomDex
@BakaKnight
Don't think to much into it.
Remember, Zekrom and Reshiram basically had Mold Breaker.
Ah I'm looking forward to getting to know the new Rotom Pokedex ^_^ even though I like to find my way around each region however, a talking Pokémon companion is a welcome touch. :3
Rip jerk rival trainer.
Look at what you've done gen 3. Look at iiiit.
I don't know why! I can't get excited for Pokemon anymore...I'll buy for sure, but I don't know everything looks so cheap and silly =/, and don't come with "but pokemon is aimed for kids" because until XY Pokemon was a bit more...serious (I can't find the right word).
I don't know without a hard mode this game will be very forgettable to me.
@BakaKnight yup and Lunaalas is Marvel scale.
@KO-Cub Yeah! Now I know what's missing! Everything is so nice and happy! That's the problem! Thanks! I don't know what it is until read what you said!
THAT ROTOM POKEDEX IS ADORABLE I WANT ONE!!!
@Frank90 play competitive or try rom hacks that add dificulty. pokemon has always been silly. Gen 1 still has some the silliest/stupidest looking pokemon. Tangela and likitung anyone.
While I am beyond excited, I can't say I'm really feeling the female protagonist's fashion design. It looks a bit overdone in comparison to the male character. Here's maybe hoping clothes can be purchased?
So I guess wer are getting clothes back from X and Y excited!
@Evenmoresteven I doubt it. GF still didn't fix the 3D issue and judging from the gameplay they edited the same engine (again). That's why I think the free camera movement will not be an option. We will get more "floating camera shots", but it won't be controlable - they have to hide the empty, non rendered stuff behind the camera. I just hope the battles won't lag anymore and that even multi battles will have 3D effect implemented (and the said 3D effect will finaly look good).
@Frank90 They are creating this utopia-like world for a while. With each game iteration it is harder to feel connected and immersed in the word where everyone is happy, everything is available, everything is so nice and cosy etc. The only real problem they have are random evil teams that keep appearing for some reason, wanting to destroy the region/world and only 10yo can stop them. Maybe that's the problem you have?
auohhh i hope w e can surf in between those islands.. ..
You had me at the new artwork for Alola. I'm throwing money at the screen already.
@Emaan Don't worry, I'm sure that'll be the main (and perhaps only) way to do that for some portion of the game
Make the new pokedex an HM device
I'm assuming that the Rotom Pokedex doesn't technically count as a party Pokemon. So...we can now have "seven" Pokemon with our character at once?
@ShikabaneHime13
Compared to the Black/White 2 female protagonist I think the design looks nice. I'm pretty positive that we'll get to buy clothing just like in X/Y.
@ShikabaneHime13 I've just been feeling envious of the female character's funky chicken hat and oversized, blousey T-shirt, while being slightly put off by the boy's brown and red 3/4 lengths (and his hair is a bit long at the back for my tastes). I guess the grass is always greener and all that.
Anyway, I super hope there are more customisation options too. And I hope the boy gets a chicken hat.
@KTT Exactly, just like the first Matrix "generations were lost".
The 10yo is hard to connect when you're older but it's a problem that I can easily look over, but the pitch perfect world is hard to swallow.
@argol228 I'm not talking about the looks, I'm talking about the world. The generation I and generation VI both talk about war, the difference, gen I marginally talks about it, gen VI uses as background but put something like a happy to go war.
Gen V is amazing, the theme is perfect, the antagonist is brutal yet enjoyable, you can feel his motivations, and some battles are hard.
Competitive, I try to enjoy, but the online is a mess, you can't use 6 pokemons on singles and there are almost no rules, one hit ko, tons of legendary pokemons, etc.
Gen VI (XY and ORAS) are a mess, and I'm not a fan of older generations only, but when a problem is so striking, we must talk about it.
@Frank90 Try smogon, personally 3v3 is the better format as that mitigates some of the issues with 6v6. long match time, and brings more tactical elements to the game since you have to choose 3 to counter a possible combination from 6 but that is beside the point. I don't think you paid much attention to VI. a plot where a mad man wanted to destroy the world and recreate it in his image by using what is essentially the god of death. Sure a war from thousands of years ago isn't the same as the possible mentions of a more recent war. since you can't relate but i wouldn't say it was " happy to go to war"
Also the character isn't 10 years old. only the anime keeps making that claim. the character are clearly mid to late teens.
Also. just because there was no mention of the jerk rival, doesn't mean there won't be one. perhaps that is saved for a plot reveal trailer. or villain team reveal.
So how does the pokedex work? You need to get Rotom inorder to do so?!?!
@argol228 I hardly think that will be a rival after a friend and a "mysterious girl" alongside the professor. Of course the rival team can be interesting, but what will make anything, even this "perfect life Hawaii", interesting is a hard mode. I can swallow anything that GameFreak throws at Pokemon since they add a hard mode. Not just level up swap, but enemies that at least use the move that is supper effective against your pokemon.
I'm guessing that the Sun Pokémon will have higher Attack and Defense, and the Moon Pokémon will have higher Special Attack and Special Defense. They will have the same Speed and HP.
@SpykeKat What's your avi from?
Call it a tad random, but Kukui seems to remind me of Junpei from the Persona series. In fact, with the theme of persona 5 being based around society; Pokemon Black and White centred around a parody of peta (Plasma), maybe we could get a parody of social justice warriors. Sorry if I might be stepping on a few toes.
@Frank90 Do you know what a Nuzlocke is? It sounds like you're craving a Nuzlocke run. That's true Hard Mode.
@Frank90 Same here; I know alot of people were divided on Black and White, but it was one of the few generations where I felt engaged with what was happening. The main problem with the first 4 generations and 6 was that the gym leader and villain plot felt completely separate, so it felt jarring having to alternate between the two.
Solgaleo info changed my mind; I wanna get Sun now
The Rotom Pokédex is so clear out of left field, I love it. Super amazing! So far I like what I see of the Alola region, good size (and I think...not 100% sure, but maybe there is some hidden stuff) and good variety. Ever so slightly disappointed that there is still an icy area in Alola, an otherwise tropical region (I've never been a fan of the frigid areas in PKMN games), but there should be some new ice type Pokémon. Looking forward to getting more info at e3!!
The ROTOM POKEDEX seems super amazing, and Alola also looks awesome. Super happy with these reveals.
"we've ran out of stuff on Earth to make into Pokemon" "Make the Pokedex a Pokemon" also it's slightly less interesting than if they had ripped off the WiiU gamepad or the 3DS and made it the Rotomdex. Which is something I'm surprised they didn't do, considering previous Pkdex looked like whatever handheld system Nintendo was producing.
I will never understand why people want pokemon to be darker. Don't you get enough of that doom and gloom in the real world? Let me have my world filled with battling pocket monsters and rainbows and sunshine.
I love all this news! The over-world and character models finally have good art styles, the region design looks awesome, and while it's too early to tell, it seems like we'll finally be back to just one true rival/friend. I'm all for good themes in video games, but seriously, that friendship stuff in X/Y was nothing but an annoyance.
Oh, and that new Pokedex is awesome. I'm curious if this will be a new form for Rotom in battle or if it is purely just for the story.
Oh man a Rotom Pokedex. Genius. Wasn't expecting Solgaleo to be Steel type. So hyped.
Your friend is named Hau?
OMG POKEMON X BIONICLE CONFIRMED!!!
FINALLY! Finally some news!
@Kalmaro Avi? I'm not too sure what you mean, sorry buddy. ;-;
@Arcamenel This seems like a direct response to Frank90. I do have to agree though. When Gen V decided to be all serious it came off as pretentious and "edgy" to me. Pokemon has always been lighthearted and happy, if you want serious play Fire Emblem.
I don't think I'll be the only trainer that'll try to break the pokedex, capture Rotom and have it in my team
The legendaries typing surprise me. I was sure there would be flying and fire involved. My guess is there'll be alternative forms with different types.
Also, that pokedex sounds great. Maybe it'll be like the PokeGear or Poketch.
I'm slightly disappointed with the rival. I was wanting another jerk rival, like Blue or Silver
@SpykeKat profile picture I mean
@Kalmaro It's Marshal the Squirrel, from Animal Crossing: New Leaf, as a human. (Gijinka) ^_^
Pretty good stuff, they've done a good job of making the game look like a generational leap over X/Y even though it's not on new hardware and I like the idea of the Rotom in the Pokedex.
I think there's a joke about Full Metal Body and Shadow Shield being abilities "no other Pokemon ever had" when they're functionality identical to Clear Body(Metagross, Regis and some others) and Multi-Scale(Dragonite, Lugia).
I want a rival with many issues and mental problems. not someone who likes food..
The typing for the legendary Pokemon completely surprised me. I have to wonder if their typings will be detrimental to their usefulness competitively though. Being weak to ghost and dark, especially with Lunala being 4x weak to these, means the cards are already stacked against them as far as battling other übers. Psychic stab also isn't that useful, with the lack of poison and fighting type legendaries.
@Ed_Fairway Yeah! Not even a phrase from gym leaders talking about the world ending!!
And a lot of more stuff, the story is good as any jrpg and better than general Pokemon story, the music is great as the first gen (Nimbasa City is so damn good).
Of course that a few things are off, the dreamworld, the design of some pokemon, the new pokemon only, but overall I love gen V.
@Arcamenel I get where ya' coming from. Maybe rather going full neon genesis evangelion on it and go fan deterringly dark, they could go more in the direction of gravity falls/undertale/steven universe; a light-hearted world with a deeper storyline. Think Black and White but a few shades lighter (pun intended).
@Frank90 Plus it broke the framework the previous gens set up: Older protagonists, a region not inspired by Japan, and introducing N one of my favourite villains from the series; mainly because I felt he was much savvier than others (sorry if I might be stepping on some toes), for example, HE ACTUALLY USES THE LEGENDARY IN BATTLE AND IT IS EPIC!
This region looks kinda small but that's why I think it'll allow cross region play like Gen II did!
That Rotom Pokedex is awesome.
The typing for Solgaleo and Lunala is surprising. Lunala actually has a type advantage over Solgaleo - Steel doesn't resist Ghost anymore as of X/Y. Lunala is 4x weak to both Dark and Ghost though, which will hurt it in Ubers (Giratina, Mega Gengar, Aegislash, and Darkrai, I'm looking at you!).
@Dr_Lugae Multiscale halves the damage given at full HP though. Shadow Shield might not halve it. Same concept though. Just might be a different damage reduction.
Am I the only one who thinks that the Rotom Pokédex will become an annoying Navi-like assistant?
So no adult trainers again? Thanks Nintendo, but I'm skipping this one until my in-game persona can be as young as I want him to be!
The new region sounds a lot like Hawaii. This could be very interesting.
The hero's wrist...that design in the final video's thumbnail reminds of Reshiram.
Also: SOLAR FURNACE LION, I AM ON-BOARD. Though typing feels a bit been-there, what with Metagross.
@Rumorlife
NX?
@BakaKnight haha no you're not missing anything. It IS clear body, just with a different name. and lunaala's ability, shadow shield is the same thing as the ability multi scale with a different name
@SpykeKat Thought she looked familiar!
I can't wait! I just pre-ordered Pokémon Sun!
This is hype. The rotom Pokedex looks really fun to use, and it may finally give me a reason to check my Pokedex. The region has 4 islands, which means island hopping, baby! I hope the evil team is just super chill and they want to, like, steal coconuts or something. Hawaii's not the place for any true evil. I hope they add an optional hard mode in the game, because Omega Ruby was a joke. I get that the normal setting should be easy for kids, but there's no reason you can't have a difficulty selection like in Black and White 2. All they have to do is up the opponent's levels a little bit. I'm hoping the graphics improve, which they most likely won't. It would be really nice to see them fix the awful framerate issue. If Monster Hunter, a MUCH more demanding game, can hit 50 FPS and 40 with 3D on, then there's no reason that Pokemon, of all games, can't manage 30. Regardless, I like what I see thus far.
So the Rotom is gonna be Pokemon's Navi?
@Detective_TeeJay Pokemon was not always a full light heartheat and happy adventure. The monsters were killed for money, hunted and eaten, used as tools in wars, kept in cages and sold as prizes in gambling games. And don't forget about genetic experiments on pokemon foetuses. People also seemed to act more like a tamers, handling their pokemon with whips.
I'm not saying the games need such themes, but keep in mind the games had dark vibes from the beginning.
And also to @Frank90 I wouldn't mind the perfect happy world that much if the story would be more engaging. Give me all the sunshine and rainbows, just don't repeat the same plot for 20 years, don't make the story silly and make humans act like actual humans. Just because something is aimed to kids doesn't mean it have to be infantile. E/PG rated game is not an exuse for a dumb plot.
@KTT Oh yeah great point, just look at Gen V, Cheren hate to lose, he tries to beat you and isn't happy about to be beaten. Now look at Shauna and co. they are so happy to lose and do something stupid, they tried to infuse some personality on the justin bieber guy and the dancing one (I can't even remember the names), but it was so flat that failed at every level.
Gameplay wise the game is good (except that steel is overpowered for now), the graphics were a great evolution, the 3d models amzing, but it's so hard to take a bland world with bland characters.
I think that Black and White was the culmination of personalities, the rivals, the champion, the gym leaders, the elite 4, and gen VI it was a huge drop from this great evolution!
@Frank90 As for me gen 5 was the reboot that the series needed. And the games were also harder due to the changes in exp gaining formula.
Beating White left me with the feeling that I beat a game. A normal, compelling video game. There was an accomplishment. Beating other pokemon games is like: "meh. At least I can at last transfer my livedex now".
My guess is that they returned to the proven formula after fans backslashed gen 5.
...Aaaand they probably had to cut out lot of content from the games due to the time restrictions.
I find it incredibly ironic that Solgaleo, which identifies with the Sun, is actually weak to Fire type attacks.... Hahaha, figure that one out... Also, clocking in at only about 500 lb. seems extremely anemic, considering it's over 11 feet tall, and most large four legged beasts only 1/2 - 3/4 that tall (like lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!) can weigh twice as much. Sounds like they need to be taught not to follow the example of barbie dolls!
I also find it rather ironic that Lunala, which represents the Moon/Night, is not just doubly, but 4x weak to both Dark and Ghost type attacks... That nice defensive ability doesn't mean much if it can still be one shotted anyways by a strong Dark or Ghost type.
Fire/Steel or Fire/Fairy and Dark/Psychic or Dark/Ghost would have made more sense for these type assignments.
@Arcamenel Says the one with a Luxray icon... (Lol, wrong kind of dark, but still funny)
Watch the Rotomdex be like HAL/Skynet... Don't be fooled! They're the REAL enemies!
@Frank90 It could be the change of art style. The earlier ones, especially with gen 1/2, were definitely sharper and displayed a greater mix of emotions than the more recent ones, which are super sunshine smiley even during the worst of times. Frowns, smirks, and disaffected looks were much more pronounced in the earlier art styles.
There were also a lot of subtly referenced but heavy themes going on in the background in the earlier titles, which was built upon up through gen 5, but got tossed out for the most part with gen 6.
@PlywoodStick and @KTT hahahha thanks guys I'm feeling better now, knowing that I'm not alone in this way of thinking.
And yeah the art, the themes, the characters, the story, everything, Gen VI disconnected something for me, and I simply can't go full hype mode with Pokémon, at least for now, sadly.
@PlywoodStick What's more ironic, on Solgaleo's part, Iron is produced in a star (or sun in this case), which is a telltale sign that it's nearing the end of it's life. It's not exactly the iron that kills the star, more along the line of it being the cosmic equivalent of throwing ash an a fire.
P.S. Sorry if I'm acting as a bit of a know-it-all
