Nintendo has confirmed that it will be shutting down the Devil's Third multiplayer servers at the end of 2016 - a year after they went live.
The servers will shut on December 29th at 1PM local time in Japan. However, things are going to be winding down sooner than that; players will no longer be able to purchase Golden Eggs - in-game currency - from June 27th.
Nintendo has also revealed that it will be reducing the price of Devil's Third on the Japanese Wii U eShop from 7,236 Yen to 3,618 Yen from tomorrow.
All of this news relates to the Japanese version of the game, but we'd imagine that Nintendo will also be closing the western servers around the same time.

well that's embarrasing
Well, damn. MP was the best part of the game.
That's a shame as it is actually pretty solid.
The press killed that, copying each other's reviews jumping on the bandwagon.
I enjoyed both aspects of that game, critically underrated game.
To be honest the game failed hard both critically and commercially and with a new system on the horizon, maybe they feel those servers will be better used for NX games.
I do hope that Nintendo don't abandon more "mature" games like this just because of how Devil's Third did. Something tells me they will though.
The only surprise is that the game ever got released and servers ever paid for in the first place.
That's a shame, I had so much fun on this game
This is why we should be able to set up our own servers
On a wider scale, any games dependent on online servers have potential to become unplayable as those servers are predictably closed down at the end of a game's natural life. Will it make retro gaming considerably more difficult going forward?
Lol.
Poor people that paid €60 for it not long ago. Wii U's services are a bit far from stable. I remember when Wii and DS stopped offering online multiplayer when millions of users including myself were still using it. I think it was too soon, but just one year...
Man that REALLY sucks!! I haven't gotten the game yet but I'm genuinely interested in trying out the game at some point. I've got about 2 or 3 backlogged games then I'm free to experiment with the quirky games with mixed reviews like this and rodea:sky soldier for example. I know this game bombed in many ways but I never thought I'd have completely missed the boat only a year later!!!
Times are a changing.......
Online multiplayer games need to start being sold with guaranteed server longevity. This decision can surely only be harmful to the marketplace, with consumers understandably becoming warier about investing in such games.
Well that is certainly in record time!
I haven't even taken the shrink-wrap of of my copy...
@VanillaLake The Wii and DS situation was hardly Nintendo's fault though. Who would have guessed GameSpy would go defunct?
Well, not really surprising. The game sold terrible and the amount of players still playing the multiplayer must be really low. There still is the PC multiplayer version if anyone still wants to get his Devil's Third fix.
@MadAussieBloke Nice bait
Not that this completely relates to Devil's Third but I think it's important. This is why I don't buy online-only games as they inevitably become unplayable once the servers are shut down and thus become utterly worthless.
At least with games like Splatoon, they have local offline multiplayer and a single player campaign. Those types of games are made with long term thought put into it.
Splatoon can be played offline with more than one player? I thought it was gamepad dependent! If so I would buy it.
wow...um..ouch :/
@pleaseunderstan
Splatoon can be played offline in two player, one with gamepad, one with pro controller (and i think with wii remote and nunchuk, but I've only used the pro controller)
its ok, but 1 v 1 isn't really the best way to play... if I remember correctly the gamepad player uses the gamepad screen, while the tv is solely dedicated to the second player
Dang, that was fast... But it does make sense considering the lukewarm response the game received and while I don't have the game (or a Wii U, for that matter), I can't imagine it's monetarily feasible for them to keep the servers on as there likely isn't a ton of people playing online (anymore).
@MadAussieBloke ... Yes... Because MK8 is also closing, and Splatoon, and SMM all the others...
Devil's Third is a bad game and it has very few players. That's the reason for closing the servers. Possibly problems with the developers sustaining support for the game as well etc.
@Damo NOA and NOUK also confirmed this

Meh, never like playing online multiplayer in any of the games on Nintendo's system (except maybe Pokemon, Super Smash Bros., and Mario Kart).
@gcunit Nice avatar,almost hypnotic.
@MrWarner14 @PleaseUnderstan As much as I have been addicted to Splatoon, I'm not exactly sure I would bother putting the disc back in my Wii U once they turned the Multiplayer Servers off. Yes, @MrWarner14 you're correct that there is a single player element, but once completed (And it doesn't take long to do so - Amiibo missions inc.) there is no real reason to go back into the single player campaign... The game is all about multiplayer... I feel sorry for the Splatoon-Crack addicts that will one day have to go cold-turkey... Maybe Splatoon will be on the NX before that date...
@OorWullie Nice of you notice; even nicer of you be complimentary about it. Gosh darn it you'd better have a good day now, you've earned it
@Fidu But Nintendo could have provided servers for those consoles a bit longer.
That's ashame maybe alot of people don't play online anymore.
If there's not enough people playing it to be able to put a game together on a regular basis, why bother? Even fans of this game would have to admit that there are much better third and first person shooters available, many of which are much cheaper than this. There's no business sense in continuing to support this.
@Grawlog Maybe Sammy and he are the same person?
@VanillaLake It's not that easy. The Wii/DS infrastructure didn't exactly allow patches. Even Skyward Sword needed a whole channel to fix that one bug. GameSpy ruined a whole lot of games when they shut down. Not even all PC games that used it were able to be salvaged.
This is why I've avoided buying Overwatch, it seems a fantastic game but it's a complete brick once the servers are shut down or people stop playing (TF2 died pretty quickly on consoles while PC stayed active).
Can't say I care tbh but still sad for people who actually brought this.
That's a shame. I was waiting on a price drop to get this game.
This game is a blast in multiplayer, too bad it didn't do better.
Will be interesting to see if Nintendo point this out when they advertise the price drop on eShop this week. Haven't got the game but I understand you can still get online matches at times. Anyone buying it from eShop after the price drop will be annoyed if Nintendo don't advertise the server shutdown.
Was thinking of buying at £14.99 from my local Game, won't bother now.
It's not like you can ever get a game, but I'm disappointed Nintendo never bothered to release a f2p version of the multi player. It's good silly fun.
@MadAussieBloke are you really naive enough to use a word like never, or are you just trying to bait?
We don't know what the next 10, 20, 30 years hold.
@Madder128 The campaign is what was widely criticized; the online was generally called serviceable, but there are so many other online shooters that it would take something truly revolutionary to grab anything away from them.
Its sad the pnline is shutiing doen for those who got the game, but it isn't the end of the world either - MK8, SSB and Splatoon's online is working fine. Devil's Third is getting the ax because it was a disaster in all senses.
What is the business logic in mantaining online for an almost dead game like that one?
I'm amazed by the amount of undeserved hate this game got. I'm sure it would got a green metascore if it was released on Xbox One/PS4 considering the gameplay is quite close to Uncharted but faster. The main problem is it's a japanese game trying to offer an alternative on the shooters market. And western industry don't like that. Stay in your niche corner japanese industry and nothing bad will happen to you.
Just another reason online multiplayer is not worth the trouble.
This is simply outrageous.
Ouch. Apparently the online mode was the best part of the whole game. What a shame.
This will happen to Splatoon in a year or two.
Cutting it after only a year is pathetic. Way to show customer loyalty, Nintendo.
Oh dear...
Multi player is fun campaign is dirt.
@sandman89 It appears you forgot to adhere to the Community Rules regarding profanity when you made this post, so we've edited it. Please remember profanity is not allowed here. Thanks.
@FragRed seeing as NoA saw how much of a dump this was and tried getting rid of it suggests this decision is entire based on the game's quality/sales and not on its age rating
@C-Olimar pretty sure Nintendo has nothing to do with the PC exclusive FTP version, I'm confident the FTP version is a result of NOA trying to dump the game before launch and a publisher rushing in to "save it"
Pff, and I was considering getting it for the online.
What a Devil tur...
Good riddance. The game is complete trash from gameplay to story. It's trying to be Metal Gear, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, and Dynasty Warriors all at the same time and failing miserably. Enemies are bullet sponges, they can kill you in three hits across all difficulties, your melee attacks hit frames are ridiculously small, shooting is pain to aim, tonal shifts make the story a confusing mess to follow, etc. It's not a good game. If your with a friend or two you can laugh at things it's trying to copy or how often you fail, but this game is not worth preserving.
@Madder128 I could not agree more. Picked it up on a whim and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Single player was fun and multiplayer was even better. Now i gotta get on tonight and make the most of it while I still can.
A shame because there is a terrific clan online experience to be had there, they should just make the online portion of the game a free to play downloable title like Namco's "Lost Reavers".
@ULTRA-64 Thats the correct attitude to have. I ignored all the "worst game everrrrr" reviews and figured I would judge devils third for myself. I ended up really enjoying the single player campaign and the multiplayer mode. Half the people that say it was terrible probably never even played it. I think its worth owning for the single player and also just for having something a bit different to mix up your nintendo collection.
Well I don't believe it. Apparently GameFly decided they want to stock Devil's Third for rental after being "Not Available" for so long. Into the Q you go, time to see what you're about in my opinion...
Wow, now that's sh#t treatment towards customer right there. Only game I can remember that shut down servers as fast was x360 game, but can't remembar if it was that crappy Shadowrun fps or other fps.
Anyway, it's better than nothing, amiright guise?
thats what you get for buying in crap games, Nintendo.
so dumb
@MrWarner14 Not exactly. Splatoon offline multplayer sucks, instead of the original modes from the online portion, the local multiplayer is the same mode of popping baloons used on the tutorial.
@meppi might be worth something if you keep it that way...
@cl0s09
I just might. Heck I'm not afraid of a little jank in my games.
Just look at my avatar, one of my favourite series is Earth Defense Force!
But for some reason I haven't felt the need to play Devil's Third even though I bought it a while ago.
@MrWarner14 I completely agree. I feel the same way and that's why I don't buy, at least at full price, online-only games. I was going to buy this game at the end of the month but now for sure I won't.
That sucks. The game isn't groundbreaking but its pretty fun.
Maaan I was just thinking of getting this game too because I had heard the online play was decent.
Ninty are way too quick when it comes to shutting off online services, it makes me reconsider buying games like splatoon and Mario maker in the future
That's the real drawback of online games. They have a shelf life. Like Star Wars Battlefront. There's no single player so when the servers go down the game is useless. This is one of the positives of Nintendo still focusing largely on couch multiplayer.
Mmnnn. And this is why I didn't buy Splatoon. I hate hearing when severs shut down, especially with this short of a life. As a rule I don't buy games I will only get any fun out of with the online aspect of the game, hence why I'm such a proprietor for couch co-op.
Will never know the joy of Splatoon, Overwatch or Destiny.
Assuming there are enough people playing this to get matches going, this irks me. The people who spent money on this game should be rewarded and not spit on imo. And the type of person who buys this and plays online is probably a hardcore Nintendo fan... If I was a recent purchaser, I would contact Nintendo about a refund because by the looks of it the online component was the only worthwhile part of this game.
I dont get it man wtf is nintendo thinking if this kinda crap is gonna happen with nx games i dont know if im gonna even buy their consoles anymore ive never had this happen to me on sony and microsoft (this is coming from a big fan of nintendo)
Woah, now i feel bad, i bought this at launch for its MP.. and i still havent touched it, since im still not done with the SP part.. lol
And nothing of value was lost. The game is an absolute trainwreck. And yes I played it from start to finish. Kill it, kill it with fire
