It was certainly positive news for RPG fans, earlier this year, when Atlus confirmed Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse for a Summer release in the Americas - it was called 'Final' in Japan. An entirely separate game from Shin Megami Tensei IV, it nevertheless shares the name as the events of the two games intersect.
Atlus has now released a rather neat story trailer for this one, along with a typically humorous press release description.
The protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse dies. Oops, spoilers! Oh wait no, that's in like...the first five minutes of the game. That's right, the Hunter-in-training for the Outlaw Hunters, a demon-fighting organization, bites off more than he could chew early in the game and gets murdered by a particularly unconcerned (yet fabulous) demon.
Luckily for players, death isn't exactly a permanent state in the world of Apocalypse. The lesser god Dagda has taken a keen interest towards our hero and "rewards" him with a second chance at life. But like most things in life, the second chance isn't free, and the protagonist is bound to Dagda as his vassal for the coming events.
As Tokyo is caught as the battle ground between Merkabah and Lucifer (with some familiar faces from the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado thrown in the mix), Dagda's position in the battle isn't exactly clear, but one thing's for sure...the protagonist's work is just beginning.
Atlus has also confirmed that pre-orders from GameStop/EB Games, Amazon.com/Amazon.ca or Best Buy will include some free armor DLC. You can see these outfits below.
Are any of you in the Americas planning to get this, or are you in Europe and sweating over its release in the region? Let us know.

Getting this for me and my friend. (He went crazy with SMT4, while I recently got it) Should be fun!
That reminds me, I still need to beat SMT IV
how does this ties with SMT IV
I wanted this muuuuuuuuch more than FE:Fates. So hyped!
@DualWielding It takes place after the true ending.
I'm so glad they've got the whorish Amazon armor again. I wore that way longer than it was effective because it's so hilariously gauche.
SMT is my favorite series ever, and the persona games
It feels weird hearing Flynn talk. Well for me at least.
Loved the trailer. Now I just need to wait until they release it in Europe sometime in October next year.
Really can't wait for this.
Shin Megami Tensei IV was hype. I remember the $30 offer through CN for it.
Not seeing as much hype for this one, but then again it seems like there hasn't been much hype in the 3DS fanbase for several years now.
This is a day one for sure.
I wonder if SEGA is "very interested" in doing their job with this one.
Ohhhh yes. Day one, baby. So many good games coming out this year. I just hope this and Persona 5 don't release too close together. Deciding which one to play first is not a choice I want to make.
Day one Fa Sho! SMT IV was such a great game...We need more 3DS atlus (JRPG) gems!
love the trailer !! even i didn't play any game in the series before ... bt it cost 50$ on amazon !! why 10$ extra than any other 3ds game ?
Can't wait for this to be announced (and possibly released) for Europe as well! SMT4 was my first SMT game and I was so hyped for it that I went to my friend's apartment in the city where we both study to download it using his unlimited Wifi
I'm not afraid to say it's one of my favorite games ever, and I'm sure Atlus will deliver again
I've never played a Shin Megami Tensei game before, but I'm interested. Is each installment pretty much its own thing like Final Fantasy, or should I start with numer one?
Day one for me!
The Best Buy and GameStop preorders armors actually look pretty nice, being stylish jumpsuits with referential, sharp colors. The Amazon one, though... Hahaha! It looks ridiculously out of place! It's a bit TOO blatantly referencing it's source...
@ProfessorToad For the most part, they are all their own thing. SMT1 and 2 are sequential plot wise, but don't have to be played in order. SMT3: Nocturne is it's own thing. This game is an interquel of sorts for SMT4, so playing that one first gives some background, though it's not necessary. Others like Digital Devil Saga definitely want you to play them in order. The Persona titles are all their own thing.
They tend to be harder than most RPG's, although the difficulty can be toned down at will in SMT4 if you die enough times. But the challenge is part of the fun, so try it on normal.
I really like Gamestop's colors better but Amazon's prices take the cake. So I'll be orange.
Hmmm, beat SMT4 twice, first Law, then Neutral. I enjoyed the second run much more. I have my nitpicks with the original game, but if I should go by this trailer, it seems Apocalypse will address some of those issues... I'm very curious.
So come on Sega, Europe likes JRPGs.
Oh my god! The overworld map doesn't look like sh*t! Looks confusing but not confusing as the one from SMTIV!
@Frank90 It seems way better than the one in SMT IV. No more struggling with the world map.
It looks like a superior sequel to my most-played 3DS game. I approve.
I will get this game. Since playing 4, I've played every game I could find. One of my favorite RPG series.
Atlus has made the 3ds my all time favorite system. Sure there's plenty of other great games but if you take away Atlus then you take away about 10 great games!
I'm making decent progress in my SMT IV playthroughs - aiming for hundred percent completion - so hopefully I'll be ready when this comes out in the west.
Also, I'm not going to bother waiting for SEGA to do their job, because I'm positive they won't. I'll just import it.
@Tsurii Oops, I missed that. And yeah, I'm sure we'll have helmets... Otherwise, how are we supposed to get our Asmodius heads!?
Looks good. But I hope they offer a few improvements over SMTIV in terms of traversing the map and other issues
Awesome!!
Besides Persona 5 no other game has me more excited!
Not really interested in the game, i'll just wait for the eventual sale. SMT IV wasn't as much fun as I hoped it would be.
Disappointed in no concrete release date, but then again, between Monster Hunter Generations, Dragon Quest VII, and Etrian Odyssey Untold 2, I'm not sure how much time I can really devote to it right now ha ha.
@ProfessorToad yes you can play any game without order, but i heard u need to play persona 3/4 in order as for smt yes start with any but i heard this game has a decent amount of spoilers for smt4 so if ur planning to get this you should just start with smt4 first
Wish i was more of a SMT fan than Persona. For me SMT4 was just ok, but seeing "Atlus" on the start of the video is almost enough to make me go for it.
Europe? EUROPE?! Please, bring it to Europe as soon as possible! Shin Megami Tensei IV is my favourite game on 3ds, can't wait to play this one!
@PlywoodStick Okay I'll try SMT3: Nocturne from the PSN store. Thanks!
Highly looking forward to whenever it comes out in Europe! Been playing Devil Survivor 2, I'm loving it and bah gawd does it make me want more SMT. Guess I'll go play the other games while I wait for Apocalypse. 😃
Im a "European" here...Nope, cant be classed as that. Its like valling someone from Brazil an American. Im from the Uk! Not Europe!
Anyway now thats off my chest id like to know if there are any sort of ideas if this will come to the UK-ahem-Europe?
@Marshi Oh darn, watch out for the special snowflake.
@Marshi
What the heck are you talking about? You know that Europe is a continent? The UK is part of Europe. So yes, you are European!
@Balki Yes, technically, I am a European. But again, technically, you could call someone from Brazil an American. Brazil is in South America which is a continent. Yes, I was also being facetious but its just a real bug bear of mine to be clumped together as part of a continent like that.
@LinkSword I was being a bit silly, I agree, so apologies for that! But that being said next time you see someone from scotland, call them a Brit and watch hoe quick they turn into a "special snowflake"!
@CrazedCavalier Oh o.k, I only got the Order ending, that's why it seems weird to me
I wonder will this ever come to Europe? Sega and Atlus really do suck.
