Earlier today we reported on a discovery by a homebrew user on 3DS that suggested a Western name for Ace Attorney 6. It turns out that was right, as Capcom has now officially confirmed that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice is coming to the 3DS eShop in September, priced at $29.99 / £24.99 / €29.99 across North America and Europe.
It's pleasing news - it had long been confirmed for the West, but it's a relatively snappy release considering that it's arriving in Japan in early June; it's also a download-only title in the West, as per the previous two releases in the series.
The Capcom Unity blog has published a neat summary, too, to give you a taste of what it has to offer.
At the start of Spirit of Justice, Phoenix is found visiting the far eastern Kingdom of Khura'in , origin point of the Kurain Channeling Technique, a method of communicating with the spirit realm. As Phoenix soon discovers, courts work differently in Khura'in – trials and verdicts are not decided by evidence or arguments, but through visions conjured via mysterious séance trials by the Royal Priestess of Khura'in herself, Rayfa Padma Khura'in. Thanks to these visions and Khura'inese law, trials here are lawyer-less, leaving defendants helpless! That's where Phoenix steps in: the new Divination Séances reveal the last moments of the victim's life, and it's up to Phoenix to find the contradictions and discrepancies between Rayfa's vision of the events and the truth of what happened.
Meanwhile, Apollo Justice is doing his best to hold down the fort back at the Wright Anything Agency, on top of taking on a case that will have massive implications. Apollo will do everything in his power to find the truth, so watch out – here comes Justice!
Spirit of Justice is packed with puzzles on top of the series' well-known witty and humorous courtroom drama. Plus, the new Divination Séance joins popular investigative techniques from previous installments to keep you constantly on your toes both in and out of the courtroom! Phoenix and Apollo will unravel captivating and revealing cases in their search for the truth, working with (or against!) a colorful cast of new and returning allies and adversaries along the way.
You can see a trailer for it below - are you planning to pick this up in September?
With thanks to Benson for the heads up.

I like the quick localization. Definitely looking forward to this.
Awesome, we won't be waiting too long for this then!
eShop Only release = Wait till on sale.
I'm still making my way through the first one anyways with another 6 after that!
I've always thought spirit mediums had no place in a game about logical thinking, and one of the things I loved most about Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies was that they seemed to be moving away from that... and now they're going right back...
Top bad it is e-shop only, I prefer physical copies. Still a day 1 buy for me
Will definitely be getting this. Just a good price point and I really love AA
I enjoyed Dual Destinies a lot and the voice acting is still great like usual, can't wait to try this one out.
Oh that's why we're getting some discount tomorrow !
Saddened by (but also understandable) that it's an eshop only release but I'll certainly keep an eye on this come September as it does look fantastic.
Guess I'll be picking up Dual Destinies in preparation then seeing as its on sale tomorrow.
While I'm mostly just pleasantly baffled that my favorite Capcom series has somehow managed to survive during the company's on-going "Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter or bust" era, I can't deny that I'm a little disappointed, though hardly surprised, that Ace Attorney 6 is going to be digital-only as well. Still, it's great that we'll be getting it so soon.
So is Athena cut from the cast?
"it's also a download-only title in the West, as per the previous two releases in the series."
Did I miss something? I thought only Dual Destinies was eShop-only. Phoenix vs Layton was physical.
Awesome. Now we just need release dates for Rhythm Heaven Megamix, DQVII, and DQVIII. Expecting DQVIII to be delayed to early 2017 though.
I'm assuming that Monster Hunter Generations, SMT IV Apocalypse, and 7th Dragon Code III will release in July.
That awful dub though...
No objection!
@Knuckles No, she's definitely in the game. I think she'll mostly serve as the assistant during the game's Apollo cases.
Looks great and love the fact that this game will come so quick.
It also, unfortunately, cements the fact that the Great Ace Attorney will probably never be localized. All thanks to the wonky localization (everything occurring in America) xD
@LasermasterA
They would have just had it so that the Japan segments of the game are actually set in a village of Japanese immigrants, and Phoenix's ancestor is 100% pure 'Murican.
Jokes aside, it is pretty sad that we won't get the game. From what I've seen, it looks way better than DD.
@SMW I think they may be counting the Ace Attorney Trilogy, not the Professor Layton crossover.
@Snargledon
Yea it looked amazing, and fresh.
If they tried they could probably work around the localization problem but meh, too much effort >.<
I love Ace Attorney/Phoenix Wright games, I just hope the DS-only fourth entry is also made available on 3DS.
Wooo, a release date! Super excited for this, and surprised at the localisation speed too!
Now, where's the Great Ace Attorney at...
Hooray! I'm so excited!
I AM SOO HYPED a lack is physical is disappointing, I was hoping that the UK store would have a limited run like fatal frame! Anyway guaranteed day 1 for me over loved all he others even investigations I wish it was localised!
Ah, that's why there's Phoenix Wright discounts on the eShop this week then.
Hey, Capcom, my birthday is September 1 and that's a Thursday. You getting my hint here?
Yes! It's a very localisation as well, which I'm pleased about! The lack of a physical release doesn't really bother me, considering I actually have more ace attorney games downloaded than physical this is the one game series that has never really let me down at all, so hopefully this game will keep up the series' reputation
day one download for me.
Great timing, two months before Pokémon Sun is going to take all my gaming time on 3DS.
Maya is that you?!
Eshop only? Import time!
Please pick this up Limited Run Games.
No objections to the game coming stateside! However my 16 GB Micro SD might have some reservations...ugh, time to just go for the 64 GB...maybe, just maybe then I can make to the NX launch.
Definitely gonna get it - but since its an eshop game I will wait for a huge discount (as I did with dual destinies)
I've only just finished the first AA game... looks like between now and September I need to finish those, Fates (which is going to take A LOT of my time), Kirby:PR, Dragon Quest 7, presumably more games on my 3DS and Steam all whilst studying for exams all year through - not even mentioning all the shows and books and movies and so much more...
obligatory OBJECTION! to make it seem like I'm still on topic...
TL;DR: I have no time for anything anymore but then again who does? Is this the growing up they warned of?
No physical again?.... Well I love Phoenix Wright but I will probably wait for a discount
@Jolt
Funny thing, I recently just finished the first AA game as well - my backlog is even greater than yours. So waiting for a dicount for an eshop is not a problem at all for me . I tend to buy physical games right away at release (which is why my backlog is constantly rising) but games which are digital only can wait - they will always be there...
Getting it. So happy to hear the next installment is coming west. I loved Duel Destinies. I wonder if Athena will make a return in this one.
I'm guessing this will be another eShop release only? Or is a physical copy possible?
I love Phoenix Wright but I will probably wait for a discount
Objection! This statement is clearly faulty.
No physical version, no sale.
No physical version, no sale.
Need I remind you that you play with the game, not the box it comes in. There's no point for this line of reasoning anymore given how prominent eshop exclusives are becoming. People want good eshop games every week and complain when they are denied, then when a good eshop game does come along, they complain that its not at retail.
@Andrzej777 Same here aha. I guess I never thought of waiting for a discount because I always like getting games at launch - but I guess it can wait. Even so Pokemon Moon will be out two months after and who knows when DQ8 will come out? To think I might get Fed Force too (although now that seems like a sale affair too)...
Too many games, too little time but that's the way it is aha.
@Bass_X0 THIS
I do prefer physical MUCH more as I like a nice box on my shelf, but if it's eShop only then so be it, I'm not having the lack of a box stop me from enjoying a game. A lot of my library is digital for various reasons and sometimes it's even more convenient. But I still like me some boxes at the end of the day, there's something about them a digital release can't match.
At least give a reason as to why "The Great Ace Attorney" isn't being localized Capcom.
EEEEEE! I can't wait to see who the new prosecutors are!
I'm....gonna need a bigger SD card
@Dark-Luigi That was revealed a while back actually... but if you want to stay spoiler free I guess you'll have to wait until the game.
@DarkKirby It's due to the fact that it takes place in such a distinctly Japanese setting. All of the previous localisations have claimed the games are in North America, so to suddenly move the whole series to Japan is a bit strange. Also, there are parts in the game that take part in England, and the Japanese characters cannot understand what the English characters are saying. This makes it very difficult to explain if the main characters are talking in English, so that's probably why they've opted out of localisation.
@HeroponRiki Ace Attorney is a really ridiculous and crazy series, why do you need to put only simple logic in it? I mean, what's wrong with having spirits and all that stuff?
Besides, Japan's logic is different to westerners.
As excited as I can possibly be.
I've never tried this series before. The lack of gameplay always seemed unappealing, but maybe I will get this if I get that collection on the E-Shop.
@Nintendo_Ninja
I think there is a demo for Dual Destinies (at least, there is one on IOS) if you want to try it out, before splunging on it. But between the trilogy and DD, the trilogy is far better.
Its a damn shame we can't get the game physical, but it still is day one for me! Now, if only we could get the Great Ace Attorney....
Kinda bummed its digital only. I will still get it though.
@Nintendo_Ninja Its not fun to watch, but fun to play. Its very story based, so I suggest playing the trilogy first before diving into this title. Its more a fun visual novel than anything.
@Luna_110 @Nintendo_Ninja There is a demo for Dual Destinies on 3DS as well, but you only can play the first...third(?) of the first case. I know the demo cuts you off before the first day ends, but it does give you a decent amount of gameplay. The iOS version gives you the entire first case for free, though. Additionally, the iOS version of Trilogy lets you play the first two cases of the first game for free as well, but I heard that the iOS ports are somewhat buggy, and have not been updated for compatibility for more recent iOS updates. Feel free to try it out, but do keep in mind that the 3DS versions play flawlessly (or just shy of flawless).
@RevolverLink Oh yeah, that's right. I forgot about the Trilogy pack.
@BranJ0
Only the most sheltered of people at this point don't know that the Phoenix Wright games actually take place in Japan. Capcom should just admit their fault, retcon the poor localization decisions, and move on.
I prefer physical copy of course, but I'll still take it. I just hope it's better than Ace Attorney 5.
I'm still on the first one. It's never ending. I'm not sure I'll make it to 2, never mind 6 😅
I'll never get used to the voice acting! lol It just seems so weird to me!
..really?.. NO physical?..again?.......

@DarkKirby Unfortunately though, after 5 main series games, a Miles Edgeworth spinoff game, and a crossover with Professor Layton, they can't just retcon the localisation. I do understand where you're coming from, and it is obvious at times even in the localised versions that they take place in Japan (especially in cases like the monstrous turnabout), but we can't just ignore all the work that the localisation team has done over the years. There is a team doing a fan translation though, and it seems to be quite far along, so you'll probably be able to play it soon btw, I love that comic!
Couldn't care less that it's digital only, as it was to be expected, if localized. I do plan on waiting for a sale though, like I did with the other two, but I will definitely continue to support the series here in the west, by buying.
@DarkKirby The actual reason is that fair or not Capcom does not believe that an Ace Attorney game not completely centering around Phoenix Wright will do well in the West after tepid responses to both Apollo Justice and Ace Attorney Investigations. It's the reason why Investigations 2 was also never localized.
@TruthBeTold A shame, really, because Investigations 2 is one of the best games in the entire series.
@Novanon I think there is little chance of a localisation of The Great Ace Attorney at this stage, sadly
Dual Destinies is the worst AA game I've ever played and since the series' creator (Shu Takumi?) has put all of his focus on The Great Ace Attorney (which probably won't make it to the west) I'm expecting the worst with Ace Attorney 6.
I'm still gonna buy it day 1 because Im a huge fan of the trilogy and Apollo justice.
Day 1 Purchase.
Your Magistry? Is that a real in-game title or a localization "oops"?
@Yoshi Really? I played the first Investigations game and I wasn't overly impressed (compared to the classics)
@Yalaa I love Dual Destinies, I enjoyed that the story was streamlined (less investigation), seemed like better pacing. The graphics and story on Dual Destinies was also great.
he should work with detective pikachu for the next crossover, assuming the good detective gets released outside japan.
@DeltaPeng The second Investigations game is much better than the first. I'm not going to divulge specifics but let's just say that if you have the ability, you should try playing the sequel.
Hi have no objections to this, funds should be looking good in September.
@HandheldGuru97 Can 3DS' even hold 64? I hear it can only hold up to 32gb.
@Kamiyouni You Can Format it on your PC or Mac. It works.
Yay! I'm super excited - love the ace attorney games!
Great news... An english option in the japanese game would have been welcomed then.
I won't put money on it then. I feel bad now because I bought the trilogy on e-shop rather than importing it and supported this "system".
if a non-localized amateur translation is released, I will buy the game (hoping import won't be too costly). Before that, I hope Dai Gyakuten Saiban will be fully translated.
Oh snap the Japanese demo is live! Where did I put my charger?
Well well well! Awesome! Never in a million years would I have expected such a speedy Western release, fantastic! Day one for me.
Yes! Very excited for this, and pleasantly suprised about the release date. Question now is which do I get: this game, or FF XV....
Damn all those "physical only" gamers. Be glad that we're getting a new Ace Attorney game at all.
Pathetic.
Yep, not getting this until it's on sale. If it was getting a physical release I would have paid full price for it. Not sorry about it.
@Lil_B Why is it understandable this is an eShop only release? (I'm not being a butthead; I'm honestly curious.)
@Yasume There's nothing wrong with having a strong preference.
Quality looking good.
@c1pher_c0mplet
No problem at all - just seeing as how Dual Destinies & the Trilogy only got eshop releases along with Capcoms focus on mobile/digital & which main ip's of theirs gets a physical run nowadays.
I was rather hoping this would get a physical run (even if it was limited) given the success of Dual Destinies & the Trilogy but seems Capcom didn't wanna take the risk (given their financial state).
At least it's coming west in some form or other.
@Knuckles No, she'll be serving as co-counsel to Apollo.
@Lil_B I see, thanks. I haven't kept up with Crapcom's ebbs and flows simply because I loathe the company and its practices. But I do remember a few years ago they put all their eggs into the mobile basket, lost a grip of money, and now it seems like they're giving it a good ol' second try (like idiots. But I guess I can't fault 'em for trying. Again.) Anyhow, I like many others would've preferred it physical but... yeah. We'll live, though.
@c1pher_c0mplet
I'm don't keep up with them either, just news articles I remember reading on here about their plans for future Ace Attorney games, money issues, mobile focus & all that. I have pretty much the same view as you do when it comes to them anyway...
But if they ever make a Viewtiful Joe 3 (fortunate enough to have 1 & 2 on GC), give Monster Hunter Stories a western release & send some more love towards the Ace Attorney series & it's spinoffs, I may look kindly upon 'em..briefly til they mess up..again aha
Aha just about. Another game to look forward to later in the year anyway
