Splatoon has had some high profile tie-ins in nearly a year since launch, but arguably few have been bigger than this weekend's bonanza for fans of alliteration - the SpongeBob SquarePants Splatoon Splatfest.
It was the first time that North American and European Splatfests aligned and even had players from both regions competing against each other; it was undoubtedly a close battle between Team SpongeBob and Team Patrick. Pink power prevailed, though, with Patrick taking the spoils.
With Splatoon being such a success on Wii U, and having clearly captured the imagination of many fans as an IP and concept, it wouldn't surprise us if more tie-ins like these come along in future.
Did you take part in this Splatfest, and were you on the winning side? Let us know.

Those of you who picked team Spongebob, screaming will get you no--head gets ripped off
Haven't played Splatoon in months. Sometimes I plan on making my grand return but these plans are quickly swept away by the combined forces of Mario Maker and Dark Souls.
It has been a while since I pick the winning team. Lost most of my matches, though.
Patrick Team rules!
I had a strong feeling Team Patrick would win after losing only around 10% of my battles. In one particular match I made a personal highscore of 18-0 kills/deaths. I suspected Team Spongebob might become the weakest team in the history of Splatfests so far. Choosing sides however was as random as ever, as I have zero interest in Spongebob as a cartoon. I might have sided with Patrick contiously because Spongebob is ugly and irritating as hell. What's the next pain gonna be... Teletubbies?
I was just so bad - I hardly helped Team SpongeBob... I know I spend most of my time in Ranked mode, but even still I was just naff...
I don't care. I reached Queen rank, and I'm getting my slot-adding thingies.
once again less popular pick was the winner. i made it all the way to patrick champion but the splatfest ended before i thought it would so i couldnt get any higher. also spongebob teams really were garbage taken as a whole, so many comfortable victories that day
I FINALLY WON MY FIRST SPLATFEST - IVE NEVER WON ONE BEFORE IM SO HAPPY hahaha
It was the Splatfest I had the most fun with. I made it to Patrick Champion rank. #TeamPatrick
My huge problem with Splatfest... Why can't we keep the shirts (like we would an old rock concert shirt)?
We spend hours ranking up the shirt, acquiring Queen/King status and helping our team win. But once the feat is over then -poof- the shirt and all our achievements are gone?
There should be a gallery or something to document our Splatfest History. Because without that then much of this feels like a waste of time.
yay...
I knew I was picking the right team.
I was team Patrick (don't know the show, but I know several Patricks and relatively few Bobs). We won only 20-30% of matches. I only play during Splatfests these days so I I know I'm ranked too high and as such start at a higher tier than I should.
I'm not at all surprised. While I did very well at first, quickly shooting up to "Spongebob Champion" and getting a "Spongebob Power" of about 1550, the quality of my teammates plummeted, and I lost the majority of my matches after that, ending with a power of around 1350.
Actually, i'm surprised that Team Spongebob lost. I chose it, and I won about 85-90% of my battles. Oh, well. It just seems that in every Splatfest the most popular team is the one that loses.
This is what happens when you call a certain starfish "Rick".
This is the second time out of six splatfests I've won. This platfest I lost three more matches than I've won if I count playing against other Patrick teams and disconnects. Because I played against other Patrick teams so much, I thought for sure the Patrick team would win the most popular choice category but lose the whole thing.
No I missed this time thought it was just in America lol.
I've been very short on cash and haven't been able to pick up Splatoon yet. Is it really as fun as I hear? It seems like a game I'd really enjoy. But I want to know before I spend any money. Just to be safe.
Pretty surprised Spongebob was more popular, half of my matches were with other Patrick teams.
Gosh darn it! I didn't get stuck in till late Saturday night, I was working. #teamSPONGEBOB lost more matches than we won, which is unusual for me, so I'm not surprised at the result. Great fun as usual though! And yeah I'd love to keep the Splatfest Tee's!
@Kris_Gunn we've been playing it since late July last year mate, and still absolutely love it in my house.
@MJKOP Wow! Then this game really has some crazy amounts of life to it then! That's something I look for in games with how tight my budget has been.
@Kris_Gunn yes me too mate. I wasn't sure at all about it, it was not my type of game at all... but my Son really wanted it & I was lucky to get it a very good price and took a chance... I can't speak for everyone but it's genuinely fantastic & like I said, we're still playing in our house!
@MJKOP Well thank you very much for the recommendation I'll definately look into getting it when I get paid in a week or so.
Man I really hope we have this Splatfest again. It was a lot of fun! Splatoon was literally filled with SpongeBob fan art during its release and seeing something like this was amazing and hilarious.
The part that caught me by surprise the most is the time that it ended. I thought it was still the same 12:00am sunday deadline until I open my game around 11am only to be freaked out that it's still night. Didn't know European players were in on it too.
