Minecraft: Wii U Edition was a natural fit for the eShop, finally providing Nintendo gamers with the opportunity to give it a shot. 4J Studios has certainly shown that it's willing to support the game post-release, and while the Nintendo exclusive DLC plans are still under wraps, there was an update last week that added a fairly substantial amount of content. All the same, there are still some gamers that prefer not to buy games digitally for one reason or another, but a recent announcement will no doubt be pleasing to that demographic.
The official Minecraft Twitter account just revealed that Minecraft: Wii U Edition will be arriving in physical form at some point in the future. No window or release date was given, just a vague "soon", but hopefully it won't be too long of a wait until you start seeing this on store shelves. Here's the tweet:
What do you think? Will you buy a physical copy? What do you think the Nintendo DLC will look like? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I would have bought the disk if it came out first
Already have the digital copy. Glad to see them give this option though. I bet there are a number of people they may not realize there is a digital version.
'Bout time.
Yea I wasn't gonna waste data for this, either I wait which worked or just play it on my pc/ other systems.
I'm just waiting for 1.9.
I think it's PC only at the moment.
Glad I waited. I'd be more likely to find it on sale in physical form than digital form.
Even Stevie Wonder could see this coming a mile away
Typically I go for retail. Don't... think that's going to happen with Minecraft. I already have it on Wii U and prefer PC anywho.
I feel the Nintendo dlc will just be a collection of skins of there best IP's
I can't imagine the game playing as good off a disc as off a hard drive. Seeing how slow things load off discs on Wii U compared to eShop installs, and how slow Minecraft loads already on Wii U... prepare to pull your hair out. If only Nintendo allowed disc installs like everybody else... oh yeah but then people would run out of space too quick thanks to their choice to always go for the smallest storage possible XD.
Ah, I've been waiting for the disc release! I'll definitely be picking this up when it launches! I've been itching to play Minecraft on my Wii U but I've held off ever since I heard it would get a physical release. Same story with Story Mode, too.
@dethmart on the other console versions game specific DLC its skins, themes and a custom game world.
So if the DLC theme is Zelda we might even get ocarina of time's world map
@abe_hikura that would be cool.. Peach's castle ...
Hyrule field and hyrule castle
Never got this game from eShop, so I'll think about this. Especially if it has some DLC included.
If the disc version gets released in the UK, good luck buying it in stores, it might be in Game if you are lucky but nowhere else. Wii U at retail stores is all but dead in the UK. Pretty much online only.
Wii U at stores in the UK has been abysmal from day 1.
I'll buy it from Amazon Warehouse Deals when I can get it for under $15.
Will definitely consider this. But the game needs to work well without an internet connection- so no big day one patch that eliminates half the reason for buying a physical version in the first place (ability to play the game in 10-20 years)
@Megumi My kid waited a year for 1.9 on PC which finally came out on Feb 29th, so don't hold your breath.
So now instead of the price just looking stupid to Nintendo digital buyers the whole world can see the $30 Wii U version sitting on the shelves right next to the $20 versions for both PS and Xbox consoles. Don't see that selling well.
@Kafei2006
Not installing to disc is a good thing.
32gb on Wii U has lasted me more than both my PS4 and X1. You always have the option to buy digital if there's a game that would benefit from loading from HDD. But why should the other 95% of the games be forced to install just so 1 or 2 can benefit...
@rjejr
Minecraft has been topping the eShop charts since its release.
I do see it selling well, for better or worse. I tweeted them and said gamepad inventory management was the only way I would buy it again on disc for Wii U. But regardless of what I do this game is going to sell. Minecraft always sells.
I don't own this yet. Only Cube Creator 3D and Cube Life: Island Survival. I actually want to buy Minecraft: Wii U Edition, but I'd still want it digitally, even with a physical retail release. I'm just waiting for them to put it on sale, along with all the DLC. $15-$20 is what I've been hoping for, since it's a 3rd party IP.
YAY!! physical all the waaay, now if they'd only do this for FF: Maiden of Black Water, but sadly that won't happen. Don't get me wrong I love eshop indie & nindie games, but I will always pick physical over digital if I have the option.
Finally. I've no room on my hard drive with the Xenoblade DLC so the physical copy is what I've been waiting for. Hopefully find a copy for under £15 too.👍
Do one better Nintendo, offer a console bundle with Minecraft included so the box has Minecraft art all over and I bet the kids all snap it up like hot cakes...
DLC is unlocked through amiibo only lol
Is it bad I have only 13 gigs left?
@JaxonH "But regardless of what I do this game is going to sell. Minecraft always sells."
OK, I'll give ya this one. Kids who want it won't care if it's $30 vs $20. Parents buying it for their kids won't care, they are too busy worrying if it works on Wii or Wii U. The only people who care about the stupid $30 vs $20 price are old jaded men like myself who were never going to buy it anyway.
Hopefully it will be on NX at launch, not 3 years later.
As a collector, I held off on buying the digital download in case the rumored retail version would come to pass. Glad I waited!
@JaxonH @rjejr
Having a hard time buying Minecraft for Wii U and thought I would. It's probably My Nintendo that will get me to do it more than anything else, so the retail option isn't enticing. GamePad inventory would be nice, but it's the local multiplayer that is the attraction, so that only helps one.
I've been ignoring LEGO games lately and maybe I'm late this knowledge, but did you notice that the Avengers LEGO game (demo) has support for 2 screen play? I was kind of shocked. One player uses the TV and the other uses the GamePad. You can even split up and be in different places. You can switch it back to split on just the TV but it defaults to using both! I really hope NX has good support for local second screen play.
I may buy it on disk just to say I have it. I still don't "get" minecraft.
I was wondering what was going on with this. This is the first time ever and probably the last time I'll be interested in this game, but I still doubt I'll delve into it unless the game comes with goodies or I find a cheap used copy after a while.
Well that's nice. Now it can finally be very official that Minecraft being on Wii U doesn't help the system any bit.
@aaronsullivan 2 screen play in Lego games goes back at least 2 years to Lego Marvel, maybe longer. Most of those games I have on PS3 but we have Marvel on Wii U and my 11 year old always plays on the Gamepad and the 13 year old on the tv. I'm surprised gaming w/ your kids you don't have more of them. I played Lego LotR w/ my wife and it was fun, huge open world over map. We don't have Lego Avengers yet, nor Jurassic World, b/c my kids backlog is getting as bad as mine. Today they are playing DI 1.0 starter pack playsets, that's how far behind they are. Though in their defense we only got DI 6 months after 2.0 came out. And we have Batman 2.0 but not 3. And we have 6 sets of Lego Dimensions toys but not the starter pack, still waiting on the PS4 for that one just in case Wii U version gets left behind when NX launches.
@rjejr
Yeah, I skipped LOTR because I wanted the kids to experience the movie and/or books without having it told LEGO-style. Was kind of tough, because I wanted to play those. Marvel I skipped because we had Disney Infinity 2.0 (I'm sure Marvel was better than the DI Marvel Play sets). We kept going back to the Star Wars trilogy on Wii. It was cheap and there was tons to do (but man were the prequel sections boring.)
Oh yeah, then LEGO City Undercover. One player only but it used GamePad in many other ways.
Those plus replaying the LEGO Batman (2?) demo on PS3 about 10 times and we had our LEGO fix, I guess.
Anyway, that's cool they supported the GamePad so well. So few games do. I wish they had been rewarded by the Wii U more. They really went out on a limb with LEGO City Undercover.
Been eyeing LEGO Force Awakens, but I just can't shake the feeling I'll have a better place to play it within a year. NX or PS4.
Glad to see the physical copy is available like other platforms even though I don't want Minecraft myself. It's just good to see that Nintendo aren't always treated differently to other platforms.
@aaronsullivan LCU is still $50 on the eShop. That's hard to do for a 3 year old Lego game, which normally drop to $20 or $30 in 6 months, and that's w/ co-op multiplayer. Nintendo never gave that game a chance. It should have been $30 6 months after release and $20 as a Select last month. Hung out to dry.
We have no interest in TFA, the first part of a trilogy. That didn't turn out so well for the Hobbit, and the 3rd movie was the most action packed battle driven part it could have been a stand alone $60 game. My guess is people didn't buy the game b/c it only had the first 2 movies, they were waiting to see what happened, and then nothing happened. Had we purchased Lego Hobbit I would have sworn off all Lego games for life. Now I only mostly avoid them. TFA can wait for parts 2 and 3 in several years. If DI is still going. Though you know me, I'll probably pick it up for $4.98 next year clearance at Target, it's what I do.
Oh, my kids have played Lego LotR, but they had already seen all of the original movies from the 70s/80 - original Hobbit is still the best, but Return of the King has this unforgettable story song.

Probably next winter we'll watch all 6 of the new movies in book order. We own extended LotR on both DVD and blu ray, we need The Hobbit, it's $65 in my Amazon wish list, hoping for $30 next Christmas. It's good to have things to look forward too.
@Angelic_Lapras_King that is really.....a great idea!(sadly the last bundles that came out in the west with 3rd party games were swap force and zombiu)
I hope they can patch it by then to have gamepad separate screen in coop :T
