With Pokémon Sun and Moon set to grace the 3DS this year, fans are expecting a gradual roll-out of new details and reveals for the titles in the coming months. There had been hope of debut gameplay footage this weekend, though we've had to settle for a more minor update.
Series director Junichi Masuda, battle director Shigeki Morimoto and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire game director Shigeru Ohmori were scheduled to appear on the official show in for the series in Japan, loosely called 'Gathering at the Pokémon House'. There was initial hope (which started to fade) that gameplay footage would appear, but instead it just had the TV début of the reveal that was originally seen in the Pokémon Direct earlier this year.
Nevertheless Masuda-san did address one key point for fans. The arrival of Mega Evolutions has perhaps prompted less new Pokémon than hoped in recent years, but when 'teased' on the topic it was apparently confirmed that there'll be more than 10 new 'mon in the games.
More information may emerge in an upcoming issues of CoroCoro Magazine, so we'll keep our eyes peeled.

More than 10 new pokemons? Sheesh, not sure I'll be able to keep count of that!
So basically we get 3 starters with their evolutions, magaerna and the 2 box legendaries? I mean that's 12 soo....
Yay. More Pokemon with supposedly more crazy designs and names. :/
More than 10? That's it? That was a terrible answer. I know it will be more, but you are just trollling the Internet to spew rage when saying this.
This game better see some significant upgrades. I don't mind skipping if it's just another small iteration.
Yeah Gen 6.5 confirmed
I just hope they do some more Mega Evolution Pokemon. I don't mind about completely new Pokemon just yet. They did just recently make a new gen of Pokemon in X and Y.
'in an upcoming issues'...
@Favna The concept of Gen 6.5 instead of Gen 7 was never deconfirmed so the starters may be the X/Y starters (Froakie, Fennekin, Chespin).
It's Pokemon, not much ever changes. I still buy it anyway and enjoy it.
But when they are at 10 where do they go from there? What will they do if they need that extra push off the cliff?
@Grumblevolcano
Pretty sure a leak of the starters were shown already.
@Grumblevolcano that's true.. I hope not tho. Gen 6 meta is super stale.
@KO-Cub: Those were 200% fake lol
@KO-Cub That was confirmed fake.
I love how people go batsh*t crazy over a joke
I'm excited, then. In my opinion, if they just stopped adding Pokémon (except for, say, two legendaries per game) and just focused on creating new and significant experiences the series would be far better off. There's so much that they could do with 800 'mons, so just cap it off as a nice, even 800 and be happy that it isn't any more bloated than it has to be.
@XCWarrior It was a joke made on a kids' TV show. He was asked, "How many new Pokemon will there be?" by one of the presenters, and rather than scowling and giving the cold response of "We are not obligated to share such information at this point in development", he give a cheeky smile and replied, "At least... 10 new Pokemon".
There are much better things for the internet to get its knickers in a twist about than a joke made on a kids' TV programme.
@SageWaterDragon going to 800 would mean they'd cut themselves once again the same way they did for gen6, but this time they'd add even less mons than before.
More than 10 new pokemon? Game Freak certainly is ambitious. -_-
WOAH DUDE, 10 NEW POKEMON!? THAT'S A LOT! BUT WAIT...THERE'S MORE!? ARE YOU SERIOUS!? I'LL NEVER COLLECT THAT MANY! ./s
I love how people are getting upset at something that was said in a clearly joking manner. There will no doubt be at least as many new Pokémon as there were in X and Y (72 total if you don't count the Megas and Primal Reversions, which upped that total to 124). My gut feeling is that there will be about 90 new Pokémon. 72 new Pokémon were a few too few, for my taste, so I think they'll make an effort to up the number a little more.
@Grumblevolcano No. It is Gen 7. That was confirmed.
What the heck! I thought we were getting a whole new region. What do you mean more than 10? That's uh, terrible?
10? Please let it be at least 10 times that many! Preferably 15 times.
I wish they'd do the Black & White thing of giving only the new ones at the start and then letting you catch all the others after beating the Champion. It made that game so much fun! For the first time since the originals I was going into battles not having a clue what was going to come up! I remember battling a friend online who had a Jellicent, which I'd not come across at that point, and the realisation of "oh crap it's a ghost type!" was amazing
Then X&Y was back to the same old. I barely ever Mega Evolved anything as I either didn't need too or I couldn't find the specific stone to do so. Was a real let down in that regard.
About time we stopped getting another 100 new pokemon, there is enough already, i like they think vertical instead of horizontaly for once when it comes to expending the series. Rather add more mega evolutions or other things instead of just tacking on a pokemon that looks like a chair and evolves into a sofa.
I find it funny how people are getting their panties in bunch even though he was clearly joking
I think they will shoot for about the same amount as X & Y with new megas which would be fine to me.
@Vee_Flames Well, there were some crazy designs and names since the very beginning, I guess everybody was just too young to notice back then.
@Arngrim The focus on Mega Evolutions ruined G6 for a lot of players. Especially since a lot of them were as stupid as Genwunners claim new Pokemon all are. Mega Aerodactyl, and its amazing skin condition! Or Mega Garchomp - significantly weaker than regular Garchomp!
Starters and their evolutions and boxart legendaries. Yup, that rounds up to 11. XD
@Wolfgabe you don't know that, for all you know there will be just 14 new Pokémen.
Could be telling the truth to take the bullet now
Moe information. I really have been waiting on those Moe updates, How's he doing these days?
@Arngrim
My thoughts exactly. Klefki's design was when I began to think this way.
@Grumblevolcano
I hope not. I really want some new starters
Darn. I was hoping there was going to be some big blow out of news and gameplay footage. I guess we'll have to settle for the CoroCoro scans that leak out a little before the middle of April.
@HyrulianOfHyrule More like Gen 7 confirmed. Gen 6.5 has been deconfirmed.
I like how they posted the april fools joke late
@Yrreiht Thank Christ it's only 10. There's FAR too many Pokemon at this point. I thought it was great when there was "only" 150, but now it's just ridiculous imo.
Only the most hardcore player is ever "gonna catch 'em all" now.
@Krisi @Kirk It's MORE than 10. Junichi Masuda also said it jokingly, implying that there will probably be MANY more.
Whoa, ten new Pokemon? And even more than that! Not sure if I can count that high. I mean, ten is already an incredibly high number for a new gen.
In all seriousness, this statement is a little underwhelming. I mean, I don't have a problem with Gen 6 having just about 70 new Pokemon (especially counting the new Megas which are practically new imo). What kinda annoyed me with Kalos, though, was that they for some reason felt the need of having like 60-70% of all Pokemon in one region. Every route had different Pokemon which didn't quite make Kalos feel as an open ecosystem. That's what I liked about the prior regions. They felt more connected, you could find a certain Pokemon in a larger area and not just one or tops two routes.
I'm not too bothered about how many new pokemon we get just as long as they have great designs. The more the merrier, but I would like to see quality over quantity.
For the record, adding in 100 new Pokemon would be more than 10. We don't know how many they're going to add. X/Y had only a small amount due to the transition to 3D models.
@seb5049 God help us.
@GoldenGamer88
Kalos was basically a nonsensical "Greatest Hits" album which is why it didn't make any sense. They had an opportunity to do a slew of European Pokemon and the only ones we got that fit that criteria was essentially the Flabebe line. The rest was all G1 nostalgia-pandering with a few others.
@Kirk
You were never intended to catch them all. That was a phrase invented to sell toys in America. In Japan, the advertising slogan was "Get Pokemon" - with the implication that you'd only go after your favorites.
And the global trade station makes getting all 700 a joke even now.
@Shepdawg1
It was hilarious watching the XY anime and seeing the writers struggle to wring 150+ episodes from a pool of 70 new Pokemon.
@SageWaterDragon
Aside from new moves, the games have nothing new to offer if there's no new Pokemon. There's literally nothing else to the series. The storyline is the same in every game, and the environments of the Pokemon series are literally just the real world with Pokemon added in.
"Here's the experience of Lumiose City - it's Paris, but look - Pidgeys are flying over it! Now it's a totally different experience! Now it's LUMIOSE! Totally different! And here's Eiffel, I mean - Lumiose Tower!"
Yeah, right.
As long as it's not Buttlax or Penisdong Pokemons I am sure I'll be ok with 10
New Pokemon are a HUGE part of the appeal in any new generation.
I don't think new generations would have the same kind of appeal if we were to start getting even less new Pokemon than Kalos introduced. I mean Kalos only just barely covered all the types with it's new Pokemon. Some types got really shafted.
Personally speaking I would be content if we got anywhere between 80 and 120 new Pokemon each generation. (I wouldn't say no to a couple more, but I think somewhere between those numbers is more reasonable)
Did I not understand the article correctly? There will be at least 10 new Pokémon? There are usually over 100 new Pokémon
This article really needs to make it clear that he was saying this in an entirely joking manner in the broadcast. Laughed and all. He didn't mean to imply that the new amount would be in the ballpark of ten. Obviously we should get a whole lot more than that. Gotta wonder how far above ten it will be, though.
@Arngrim yeah! Lets stick with the six eggs that evolves into a tree! Not like all the weird ones like that one based on a robin, or the pigeon, or the bat. Remember when we used to have normal design like the magnets that evolved into more magnets or the mime artist and that digital low-poly one? Now we've got a shrimp and a lion and a panda. It's just silly! They should have stopped after they made the land mine one and the one that looks like a poke ball with eyes. They're just weird now. They actually added a goat! Of all the nonsense things to add they brought in a goat!?! Absolutely ludicrous.
@e105zeta Hence me saying that if they just buckle down and try to make each game something new it would be better than just throwing in Pokémon and hoping people eat it up. Just make one last Stadium-esque game with the old combat system and everything, perfect that for people who want to play in the future, and then revamp it for future entries. New combat, new storytelling, new structure.
I think the joke was that he revealed something without revealing anything at all.
Since it would be obvious to the majority of people that a new generation will introduce 9 starter Pokemon and we already know about Magearna and the new bird Pokemon. So we're already at 11 even without considering the mascot legendaries and evolutions of the new bird Pokemon.
@Arcamenel to be fair ORAS had new megas and that was still Gen 6....
Who cares? Like, at all? Everyone but the most hardcore of Pokémon fans have been complaining for years that there are way too many stupidly designed and named Pokémon, and that it feels like new ones are added and made up with little effort just for the sake of adding new ones. I'd be grateful if they only put in a handful of new monsters, as long as they're thoughtfully designed - instead of just, say, a bunny with green ears or a generic bird with a pink tail or whatever.
More then 10...what kind of thing is that to say? I would hope so. If Gen 7 doesn't have like 75+ preferably 100 ish new ones...then nobody is going to be happy.
Edit: PROFANITY FILTER ACTIVATED. OFFENDING MATERIAL REMOVED.
He's obviously trying to be funny, but it's all in poor tastes. Fans have been waiting for solid information since the reveal of S/M, and when we are promised SOMETHING for it, all we get is a joke? It's obvious why there's a lot of disappointment.
On the subject of more Pokemon. Odd generations always add more than new generations, no one can say for sure if they'll continue this pattern, but it's food for thought.
@SageWaterDragon
The only new combat people would want is action. And that would be impossible with 150 characters, much less 700.
I think its wrong to view the Pokemon generations as separate games when they are more accurately expansion packs for the same game all interconnected via the metagame and Pokemon Bank.
@CB85 I was thinking the same thing kinda. I have no problem if they go with the quality over quantity approach. Personally I think Gen V had some of the worst designs. A trash bag really?
@e105zeta Imagine a system like Final Fantasy XIII. Something that is more engaging than a purely turn-based game but also not incredibly difficult to design as long as all of the animations and whatnot are easily standardized. There are opportunities for change that they aren't taking.
I'm pretty sure that "more than ten" means "way more than just the ten you're assuming we're gonna add". Anyway, I'm so, so, so glad I forgot about the footage due today. Forgetting about my expectations means I forgot about how they potentially be disappointed.
The thing that was underwhelming in X/Y is the lack of new pokemon added.
Hopefully, this new one doesn't make it as disappointing as that one.
Also, I know this is something I can't expect Gamefreak to do, but I would like to atleast see pretty visuals in this new one if they are gonna use 3D Graphics. The old one is just passable. I miss the pixel art times.
@Favna
The box legendaries will be Mega Solrock and Mega Lunatone, bringing the count back down to 10.
@Snargledon lol well played
@Maxz Then the writer of the story needs to say, "said jokingly." Don't get on me for the writer leaving out an important adjective.
Though the last generation only had like 70 POkemon. If you can't put the effort to make 125+ additions, don't bother. Especially when they on purpose make about 85% of them useless for competitive battling.
@XCWarrior Well you've got a point there. Nothing of much substance came out of the broadcast, so there's not a whole lot to base an article on, really. To be honest, having watched the broadcast, I was surprised when this article appeared at all.
I don't know whether the even author knew the exact context either. They may well have just read a rundown of the broadcast, which had picked that particular statement, which could then have been based on a translation that THAT author received from ANOTHER person.
I wouldn't say it's a case of Chinese whispers, but you often lose some of the fidelity and nuance when these sorts of things are reported and re-reported (especially after translation).
As such, don't think it's worth reacting too strongly against any this sort of thing unless the context is clear. In its defence, the article didn't actually state anything erroneous, so it's wise to keep an open mind unless you've been given information straight from the horse's mouth.
DUUUDE...TEN NEW POKEMON?! That's, like, waaay too many.
Why must they always focus on putting new Pokemon into these games? They're really going overboard now. Ten whole Pokemon? That's just ridiculous. Game Freak must be really working those Pokemon artists like dogs if they plan on getting ten WHOLE POKEMON out by November! I'll be floored if they even get 5 out, but TEN? IF they can somehow pull off this ambitious goal of ten new Pokemon, Pokemon Sun and Moon will be the BEST games in the entire series!
More than 10 new Pokemon?
Hahaha, that's cute!
God you people take things so seriously. It's Masuda. From what I know, he's a troll in some ways!
What I hope we get is the Black and White treatment, where there's so many Pokemon, none of the Pokemon from past generations appear until the post game. That's what I love the most about Black and White. I just beat White last night after replaying it and I never realized it until now.
He's obviously joking... But man, what a troll.
Fellas, he only said it a joking matter. More then 10 can be anywhere between 11 and 1100 for all we know. Basically, It's a non answer since he obviously can't tell them there and now.
Guys, you all need to calm down.
For those of you who don't want 100+ new pokemon, I say this just gives you more options. Besides, think about the people who do want more pokemon.
This was also one of the major reasons X and Y were criticised so negatively. Apparently anything less than 100 is just not enough. Not to mention it's what we (the fanbase) have come to expect from the series after how many years? Many would argue that a lot of thought went into each 'mon that's been created thus far, and I'd be one of those people - please refer to Grimer > Muk and Voltorb > Electrode before stating something along the lines of newer gen pokemon are lacking in quality. There have been good and bad in every generation, but don't let those select few blind you to the rest. Truth is, such vast differences between each pokemon allows us to pick our favourites or have such diversity when it comes to building a team. Rather than top teams constantly having the same generic pokemon like Garchomp or Tyranitar. And keep in mind, the majority of pokemon are based off real world animals. And there are supposed to be 1000+ specie out there. Past and present (fossils, anyone?) so it really shouldn't come as a surprise that we're still getting many more. If you want to consistently use the same pokemon or stick to the number we currently have -maybe even lower- you only need to buy an earlier generation to give yourself that option. But the majority of pokemon fans want more, new, interesting designs to play with. We want to see the lore behind them, we want to see the new type combinations and we would love to see how they all fit into the greater spectrum of pokemon. There's nothing wrong with that - just different preferences. And to be honest, that's the main reason why pokemon sells so well to begin with.
For those of you who haven't realized what was meant with Masuda's comment - it was a joke. That's all there is to it. Because "more than ten" can mean anything. And as fans have come to expect by this point - 10 simply won't cut it. If anything, it's a safe bet to assume we won't get any number less than 60, thanks to X and Y. Now they know the minimum that fans are asking for. Not saying they can't do less than that if they wanted to - I'm sure they'd make it work somehow if that's the case. But to keep the majority of fans happy, that's probably what they'll shoot for. In the end, this is a business to them. And they need to sell as many units of pokemon as possible. That's how it's always been. So if they give the majority of people what they want, they'll have a better chance to reach whatever sales target they've set for the new games.
And I am definitely looking forward to whatever they come up with for this Gen. Here's hoping Corocoro drops some amazing stuff. There are only 7 months to go until the games are released afterall, so its best to start feeding us something solid pretty soon. Hype needs maintenance, at every stage.
@SageWaterDragon
I liked Final Fantasy 13 but its battle system was never something I hear praise about.
But still, what you just described was Yo-kai Watch.
Action-based combat would basically kill Pokemon's Pvp scene by naking it entirely about reflexes. Yo-kai Watch's pvp is rightly regarded as a fun little extra that would be impossible to balance.
Between Mystery Dungeon, Pokken, and Rumble the metafranchise has tons of alternate gameplay as side projects but any attempt to supplant the main series' battle system would likely either kill Pokemon's pvp or pve which both already exist in a perilous balance.
I do agree that the Badge Quest narrative should be jettisoned asap, or at the very least de-emphasized as it was in G5.
Wow, a whole lot of people got out of bed on the wrong side this morning 😄
I think this whole "10 new Pokemon" thing is actually the right way to go. Think about it; Pokemon Black and White added over 150 new Pokemon, and everyone hated it. Everyone loves Pokemon X and Y, and thats because it only added 60-ish new Pokemon. The fans don't want new Pokemon, they want a new region with old Pokemon! I'm so glad Masuda and Game Freak have finally understood the error of their ways and can now create Pokemon games that are truly worth playing.
10? They sure are stretching themselves thin, huh.
I wish they would reset the franchise. Pick 200 pokemon (any 200 from the whole franchise) and start it over.
Oh well, it seems that many people have no sense of humor and less patience; it is sad to say it, but for that reason is that many people aggress fans ...
Yes, I also expect info yesterday, but never mind; I know that information will come, sooner or later, but it will come, but well, that continue the disgust for not receive info...
on another thing; yes, the joke was "simple", XD, or they are not good for jokes, or they were not fit to make good jokes, XD
I feel sorry for anyone who believed that Masuda's response was anything other than humour.
10 new mon!
3 new starters and a new Normal/Flying type confirmed!
I've been telling you guys, this is indeed Generation 6.5! Be patient, I mean, Zygarde hasn't even been explored yet...
@e105zeta
I have all 720 sitting on my 3DS right now. Just awaiting the official release of Volcanion in the west.
He was joking when he said that statement. I'm surprised how many places are reporting that there are only gonna be 10 new Pokemon
7.8/10 - Too many Pokémon.
Seriously though, I'm really looking forward to Sun/Moon I really hope they're full-on new adventures with a new region to boot.
@seb5049 I... know? I didn't comment anything on that, just said that the newer designs and names aren't really crazier than the older ones.
@Maxz I just hope this game has a big update. I skipped the Gen 3 games, and the ones right before that. X was the last game I got, skipped Black2/White2 as well b/c of sameness.
They'll change Star Fox to know end, even though there is a proven working formula with SF64. Pokemon could use some tweaking, but all they seem to do is mess with meaningless mini games.
10?!?! That's enough for the starters and an evolution-less region rodent. Whew. At least we got the basics down, that's a relief. Now we just have to slap Solrock and Lunatone on the covers and call it a game.
I hope there's a ton more than just a handful of new Pokemon.... Otherwise, what's even the point in putting out a new generation?!
I thought this was pretty funny, actually.
Over ten new pokemon!? Hotdog!
More mons hmmm,the more the merrier.What amazes me is where do they get their ideas from and will Pokemon Sun/Moon have a more refined battle system?
I can't wait to see some new Steel types
