Ever since the initial announcement and hype of Yooka-Laylee, it seems that new information on the upcoming title has been difficult to come by. No doubt this means that Playtonic is hard at work, polishing up what will hopefully be a glorious homage to the great N64 platformers of old. Of course, this project is being worked on by former employees that had a hand in the development of titles such as Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64, and it seems that the roster of Rare veterans is continuing to grow.
Playtonic recently announced that Phil Tossell, who did coding work on both Star Fox Adventures and Kameo: Elements of Power, has joined the studio on a temporary basis to contribute code to the project. Tossell cofounded Nyamyam – the studio responsible for Tengami – and it seems that he'll just be part of this in a somewhat limited capacity. All the same, it's good to see that more talent is being added to the team, and that development is progressing nicely.

Hopefully this one won't get delayed a few years because the multiplayer doesn't work right...
Cool beans. Looking forward to some sort of announcement soon.
@MitchVogel shots fired 😂
That's awesome!
@DarthNocturnal The only release window we have to work off of is the Kickstarter, where they stated that they are targeting October of this year.
Really looking forward to this... Loved the N64 platformers from Rare. Not sure I can pick 1 favourite. Loved DK64, BK, BT and CBFD equally, although I think the multi-player parts of Conker probably edged it...
We'll see if this game will actually get released for Wii U. It could be a good idea to shift focus from Wii U to future Nintendo consoles.
This is taking too long. TwT
I hope it turns out great.
@DarthNocturnal A delayed game is eventually good... Just look at Shantae Half Genie Hero. It's a year and a half late, but at least it looks very good, and from the demo, it's not just looks.
looking forward to this. My favorite N64 game is definitely DK 64
Saw this last week. At this rate, the whole of old Rare will be working @ Playtonic soon...
All these Playtonic staff worked on Rare's Xbox 360 output, which most on here seem to think of as poor games? I'm excited for Yooka Laylee but this dev is a long way from what people consider classic era Rare. A lot of those guys left a long, long time before the move to MS.
I guess we will be in quite some shock when we see more (at E3?). And I mean that in a possitive way. I can only imagine the game has evolved a lot since the first video!!
October is in 6 months. My gut is telling me that they ain't going to make it. I'm smelling a 2017 release.
@Kosmo I've really lost interest in the Shantae game and couldn't care less about it any more! Same with Hex Heroes. I don't think I'd tire of waiting for Playtonic and Yooka though...
I have full confidence in this. It's going to be awesome. And they've done the best thing they can do: shut up, get on with it, and release it when it's done. Many of them have shipped huge games for decades so they know what they're doing. Also, they started development and only launched the Kickstarter when everyone responded so well. It's going to be awesome!
@Peach 64 However, the core team of Playtonic that started the company have worked on Nintendo-era Rare working on the Donkey Kong Country series, Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64.
@DarthNocturnal And why is that? Because it's delayed? That says nothing about how the game will eventually turn out, so you're pretty much jumping the gun here. Let's just wait and see. The staff working on it is certainly a whole lot more worthy of the title "former Rare" than the skeleton crew left at Microsoft HQ...
@Peach64 That is not entirely true. Most of Playtonic's staff is indeed classic Rare and have worked on both SNES and N64 Rare titles, so I have no idea how you came to that conclusion. They even have the original musical composers working for them.
I am still waiting for that Toybox+ thing
Looking forward to this one...in 2017. That's OK though, I'd rather have an indie game like this in the spring as the holiday and winter is for playing all the big holiday titles. Releasing this on Wii U at the same time as Zelda U or Paper Mario may not be the best plan. April is good, it looks like Easter on that Island.
Lobodestroyo is nowhere to be found so I hope this one makes it. Too much silence isnt always good.
I wish they'd show some more info on progress, it's been more than a month now.
Nintendo buy playtoinc you will have a closest thing to old rare back.
@andrew20 OR Nintendo should someday hire these guys for a fun project.
Hopefully, I want them to make an HD remake of Donkey Kong 64.
@Peach64 I have to correct you.the games they made there weren't the games they wanted to make.they didn't want to make nuts and bolts.there idea got scraped by xbone.everything these guys done from nes to the gamcube are classics.Till Microsoft bought them.that's just facts,this game Wil be a classic before it even comes out.
I hope they do a deal to make an amiibo!
Rare on the N64 days were my absolute favorite developer. I cannot tell you how excited I am for this game! Probably my most hyped game right now except for Zelda. Conker's Bad Fur Day is not only my favorite Rare game but my 2nd favorite game of all time. Banjo-Kazooie is very close to that, and I have a lot of love for Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Tooie, Jet Force Gemini, Blast Corps, Killer Instinct, the Donkey Kong Country series, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark too. Basically I love all things 90s Rare!
@Peach64 You do know alot of the design decisions over the last decade were made by Microsoft focus teams that came in from America and not actually Rare themselves?
The last platform game Rare made was Banjo Nuts and bolts, which was good, but it was Microsoft who insisted on enforcing the vehicle concept and abandoning platforming!
I'm buying this game no matter what the reviews are. I've been playing my old Rare N64 collection and I'm addicted.
I hope they make a game inspired by Jet Force Gemini next. Easily one of my favorite games on the system. Not to mention my favorite soundtrack of all time.
@rjejr Zelda U delayed to 2017
This game is day one purchase.
@PikminSalad Yeah, I bought an Xbox One for Rare Replay - and then I discovered more great stuff, too, like Halo and the new Killer Instinct (Ken Lobb supervised it).
@Grumblevolcano Now I'm sure The Legend of Zelda will launch the same day NX launches. I remember now that the Wii version of Twilight Princess was released before the GameCube version.
@Grumblevolcano Yeah well probably. The only thing for certain is that it isn't coming out in 2015 like they said. Twice.
I feel like we know so much more about PS4k than NX, and PS4k is just a rumour, Ninteod said "NX" last March, 13 months ago. And Zelda U is almost certainly Zelda U/NX, but who knows when either of those release?
Secrecy is one thing, I get that, you want to keep something new secret so you don't talk about it. But they've talked about NX - even at E3 when Reggie said - "We'll talk about NX next year" - well it is next year now, April, year is already 1/3 over. And they delayed Zelda last spring, but "delay" shouldn't mean vanished. Canceled Starfox 2 gets more coverage than Zelda U. They aren't being secret, they are just being silent. Secret may be good, but silent is frikkin annoying.
uh, sorry about that, rant got away from me.
I just don't think this will come to Wii U.
This game is easily near the top of my list of most anticipated games mainly because it has been so long since a truly great new 3D platformer in the vein of Banjo Kazooie was released. I hope this game lives up to expectations but looking at the team I expect that it will!
Man, I get so excited every time I see a story about this game! And then I read the headline and it's just about another staff addition, and then I get sad. I need an actual update on this thing, man! Man.
@rjejr Well, I enjoyed your post. Just wait a few more months, at E3 we'll see what NX is and Nintendo will say: launching spring 2017, or something like that. And a few days later, a Nintendo Direct about Zelda "on NX and Wii U". So yeah, be patient.
@Dpishere I agree 100%.
As much as I want to play this right now, I don't really mind waiting THAT much. It would be a lot more bearable if they'd give us some more info, or screenshots, or something!
HOT DAMN, Phil Tossell, this guy's a regular tech wiz.
@business-scrub
I'm certain they'll be at E3 with a new showcase.
@VanillaLake Man, if we have to wait until E3 to get something real on NX I won't be here to post on it, I'll be banned from all of my insane obscenity laced rants throughout May.
NX reveal in early May, drop some game names, then show the games off in all their NX glory at E3 w/ dates. NX in reveal in May should just say things like "holiday 2016" for the NX and "launch window" for games. E3 gets console and game dates. Too risky to wiat until E3 to show off the NX w/ PS4K lurking and VR becoming a thing, not just on PS4 but PC as well. Best to have it in May and get all the attention for a few weeks to a month.
@rjejr Haha
@Kirbman Then just go and look at the Kickstarter page.
