When we reviewed Pokémon Picross we rather liked it, but felt that the free-to-play aspect was stingier than Cranky Kong's Black Friday discounts. Nevertheless, those happy to spend some money that like both Pokémon and Picross should have much to like in the download.
For those of us trapped in the purgatory of its excessive limitations, though, there's a little piece of Mew-shaped release. Nintendo of Europe has tweeted a code that gives us access to a puzzle featuring the popular 'mon.
A nice little extra in any case - will you be trying it out?

Mine's not working. Is it europe only?...I'll try again later
Has taken them long enough to officially release them! All of the passwords were datamined shortly after release and are here:

I gave up on this a while ago. I'm usually very patient with free to play, but this took it too far with it's pay wall. If it had just been slightly more generous I probably would have got hooked and dropped some money, but it became impossible to progress, too early.
@RIC616
It's definitely not free to play, just free to start.
Someone did the math as I recall and found you'd have to wait up to a year to get enough picrites daily, to enjoy the full content of the game.
@Captain_Toad they're region locked. But all the codes we data mined and you can find them on bulbapedia if you're so inclined. : )
@Ogbert Figured. Thanks.
@RupeeClock It taking a while to complete for free and it requiring money to play are too different things. Even if it takes a year to get enough free Picrites, the fact you can get enough free Picrites means it is indeed free to play.
I've not put in anything so far. I've only unlocked 14 areas but I've a whole bunch of other games to get through I kinda like that I can slowly chip away at it like that.
"Stingier than Cranky Kong's Black Friday discounts" I love this.
@RupeeClock That's absurd. Are we talking playing the game every day for a year?
@RupeeClock That sounds about right.
I didn't bother downloading this. The other Pokemon free to play games I've tried but they are pretty tedious. Another one, albeit on different lines, was a step too far for me.
I won't do this, since I've lost interest in this game. If it had been a fairly cheap download game, then I might have bought and enjoyed it.
II'll almost never spend any real money in a free-to-play game. If it's possible to unlock something without spending money then I'll give that a try, and I'll either succeed or get bored and play something else.
Pretty sure I got Mew a long time ago
I bought the discounted picrites back when the game was launched and used them to unlock Alt-World and make some progress. I'm currently on map 20/30. I'm liking the game and I'm in no hurry. I open the game once a day to do the daily challenge which takes like a minute and a half and once I open a new area I'll solve all the puzzles in a day or two. I don't think Picross should be played all the time. It's more of a relaxing experience.
Does everyone really play games hours at a time? I can barely make myself play a game for an hour nowadays before switching to other things. I get my daily dose of gaming by playing one hour of Smash with friends every day + a quick play session of Pokémon Shuffle and Pokémon Picross. I guess those will be accompanied by Bravely Second soon.
@Kalmaro Yes, you are allowed to do daily training once per day to earn Picrites.
These are the only renewable Picrites in the game. Others can be earned by completely missions on each stage or unlocking achievements, but are one-time deals.
The further you go into the game, the more Picrites you get awarded for your daily training. A couple of players figured out that you can cheat the 3DS system clock to repeat the daily training as much as you want, I forget the specifics though.
I got the European code for Mew from some random GameFAQs thread, like... months ago.
@RupeeClock With only being able to earn up to 7 Picrites a day in free play and needing 500 to buy a Mega Evolution puzzle and 70-80 for new areas it can be a challenge to play and get much out of it. And with the play timer that only lets you complete one or two puzzles every few hours, I suppose it keeps the non-paying players from getting too addicted. Would be nice if North America received a similar promo code.
@Nico07 You can earn more than 7 a day. The amount you earn goes up the more you play the daily challenges and you get more for completing the challenge within the time limit than if you exceed it. And there are one-off achievements that grant a few Picrites here and there plus whenever you unlock a new area completing the puzzles and missions there (and the ones you now have the right Pokémon to go back too and do) usually replenishes 50-60 Picrites immediately. I just do my daily challenge and play something else until I get enough to unlock a new area.
You do know that there Region-Locked, right?
@RupeeClock if I can cheat the clock then I don't mind downloading it. I don't mind paying for stuff but it better be upfront. Not sneaky dlc.
At least with amiibo I knew what I was getting.
Yeah got Mew months ago ^^
Yeah... I've kind of had Mew for 3 weeks now. I guess some of those passwords I found on the internet weren't officially released yet...
It's really annoying that Picrites can only be mined so slowly (but that's why it's free-to-play, they want you to pay money to get them faster), but then I realized I'm probably playing the actual Pokemon games just as slowly, so I'm not as bothered.
(though of course, I like that me playing a game slowly is an OPTION)
@DefHalan I also got Mew ages ago, it's a pretty early one.
I bought the maximum number of Picrites (5000) and completed the game in about 70 hours. Not the best value considering the minimalistic nature of the game, but I don't feel completely ripped off either.
Password has been officially available since begining of January at http://www.pokemonpicross.com
Like someone else said passwords were known right after game was released.
Serebii's version even lists the official release dates and sources
http://www.serebii.net/picross/passwords.shtml
I agree, takes way too much time to mine enough Picrites to do anything. I wouldn't mind so much if there were other things to do, or if it wasn't the easiest Picross game ever made.
I guess at least it isn't as bad as Pushmo or Pokemon Shuffle.

Multiple daily training but time spent doing it though is likely way higher than earning money to buy 5000 picrites to unlock game.
@CubeFanLucy looks promising, I feel better about the game now, thanks!
Shame there's no touchscreen-enabled picross games on Wii U, I quite enjoy those.
I have a problem guys! My password option dissapeared after I had entered a few passwords. How do I get that option back?!
Update: Oh, I have Mew already! It seems the option dissapears when you have entered all codes.
I entered three or four codes who were delivered over Twitter a month ago (including Manaphy, the Zygarde forms, Jirachi and Mew). I thought it was an official announce. ^^" Since then I have no option anymore.
@RIC616 @RupeeClock The japanese direct presentation clearly said "free-to-start".
@Sean_Aaron Agreed. I'm still waiting for PixlCross
It looks promising, I feel better about the game now and will play it shortly
