SteamWorld Heist was a late year treat for 3DS owners in 2015, serving up a hugely accomplished follow-up to the much loved SteamWorld Dig. Its blend of charming steampunk visuals, a humorous script and clever 2D turn-based strategy worked rather well, seemingly impressing many that picked it up.
The studio has now published its first blog update of the year, and has taken the opportunity to share positive news on its performance. Answering a hypothetical question on whether Heist has been a success, it says the following:
Yes, it is! So far SteamWorld Heist is an even bigger success than SteamWorld Dig. Not just in terms of sales: Reviews and community feedback are through the roof!
At the time of writing SteamWorld Heist is tied with Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate for the highest rated 3DS game of 2015 (not counting remakes), according to Metacritic. We have no sales figures to share today, but rest assured we're very pleased with the numbers.
It's also confirmed, however, that the planned January update has fallen back - it'll include additional languages along with some extras in the game.
The first SteamWorld Heist update (containing the French, Italian, German, Spanish and Russian translations) was originally planned for release on Nintendo 3DS this month. Time constraints have pushed this forward a bit.
We're working hard to ensure it's downright excellent and expect to have the update out before you know it. To make up for the delay we're throwing in new surprises and lots of polish. Stay tuned!
It's good news that SteamWorld Heist is performing well; the Nintendo Life community clearly likes it, as you voted it your 3DS eShop Game of the Year for 2015. It'll be interesting to see what surprises the update brings and, of course, a Wii U version is also expected this year.
Are you a SteamWorld Heist fan, or are you waiting for the HD version on Wii U? Let us know.

Good to hear! Puts me on pins and needles for the WiiU version.
this is delightful news! keep making games image and form, they rock! now i need to play tower defense and if i like that i will have enjoyed every one of their games.
Great game, was one of my favourite games of last year and looking forward to NG+ when I get time to!
Hooray! I love seeing a game with so much love and talent put into it do well. Also, as far as the update being pushed back, Image & Form are a studio I trust to use the time wisely and release the best possible content they can. I'll endure any delay they put upon me because it's ALWAYS worth it.
I'm very happy to hear it. It's a great game, they deserve the success.
A wonderful game
Great to hear. I've enjoyed the 3DS version but can't wait to get this on my Wii U
Excellent news 😀 The game is fantastic and I was really rooting it would be successful sales wise!! It's totally deserved 😀
Great to hear! Own and love Dig. Will pick up Heist in the future. But as I post frequently, my backlog is a mess and no point at buying something at full price when I might not get to it for months.
Bought day one, well deserved success! The only small blemish, imo, is NG+, which is basically just a second run through the game, you only keep the hats. Maybe with the update something will change there...
Eager to buy another copy on Wii U and PS4 I love this game so much, just as I fell in love with Dig day 1.
And the best part....they did it without going online and trying to guilt buyers into buying their game! (Reference to this article -> https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/12/sales_for_dementium_remastered_have_been_much_lower_than_expected)
I'm waiting for the Wii U version. There's been very little in terms of news on that front.
I really enjoyed SteamWorld Dig.
Can I ask: how does this game compate to Codename STEAM, as a strategy game I mean?
I played Codename, liked it but it didn't compel me to finish (far from it). I'm afraid the gameplay didn't do it for me. So, how does Heist compare in that sense? I loved Dig.
I've got all the Steamworld games. This one is the best by far so I'm really happy it has done well. I'd absolutely LOVE to see them go back and do a new Tower Defense game.
That's some crazy big talk there! Gotta wonder why GDC debs aren;t as interested in 3DS anymore...
One thing: Is it really a good idea to release a game in other countries while relying on a later patch to bring the appropriate language? Must harm sales if the base product isn;t in the correct language.
Waiting for the Wii U version. Maybe a special discount for double dipping?
superb game, I have 18 hours on it already
doing a second playtrough
This is a double dip if I've ever seen one.
Very good news! I didn't think it would sell as well! I can't wait to play this on Wii U!
Well deserved.
Great news, the game is terrific! Congrats @imageform !
I really need to get this one. I'll probably get it on my 3DS sometime relatively soon. The great reviews definitely make me want to get in on it, and I'm sure I'll like it.
I am one that will eat my words. I thought that the price point even with the initial sale was too high and would hold people off. Its just further proof that if you make a good game that people want then the price shouldn't matter. Great job and we'll done to Image and Form!! You will always have my attention with future game announcements.
Does anyone that plays Heist ever stand inside Gat Parret's Orbithouse and just listen to the music? I love that song. Great game also of course.
@rodaco I honestly find this game to be more compelling and easy to pick up than Codename. It's just...more fluid you know? If there's one thing that'd make it cooler to me though, it's that you could move freely in missions in much the same way as with Codename STEAM and just have a limited move range. This game actually uses more of a grid format though, albeit in a side scrolling perspective.
It deserves it. It's really a great game. Remind me Worms and Lost Vikings. Tons of replayability too which is rare for an eshop game
Totally worth the price
Congrats @imageform.
Didn't think it'd be my thing but after seeing the reviews I gave it a punt and it was definitely worth it.
Please do something with more of a story next time. You've definitely got a solid grasp on making good gameplay but it needs more of an emotional connection to get to that next level. I found myself just skipping through most of the text in this after the first hour or so.
Congrats on the success!.. Diggin the game and look forward to the update..also the home theme is one of my favorites.. nice job Image & Form ..thanks..
Fun and addictive game but yes can't wait for the Wii U version too play this on a bigger screen .
I'm not a fan of Steamworld Heist, but congrats to the devs, they deserve it.
Great game. Cheap and stuffed with levels, guns and challenge. Well done image and form!
Congratulations to Image & Form on the success, looking forward to the Wii U version!
Unfortunately I haven't done my part to help this great studio out but I do plan on fixing that when the game releases on Wii U! Loved dig and this game may be even better than that game!
Nice job! It's a great game. Hope it does well on all the other platforms.
Thoroughly deserves it!! ALL the big xmas console releases were kind of a let down!! Gave Heist a shot (I generally hate turn based games) and loved it!!! Ploughed 25 hours into it and levelled everyone up to the max!!! Addictive as hell!!!
You're awesome, peeps! Humble thanks from all of us at Image & Form! /Julius
Loving this game And I love going to the bars and listen to the awsome music. If I can make a wish, it's to have an in-game soundtrack that can be played while the 3DS is closed, like in Xenoblade or Smash! Going to double dip on this one too, just like I did on Steamworld Dig.
