A recent CoroCoro magazine leak announced the Volcanion Pokémon, confirming that it would feature in the 2016 movie for the series. The Pokémon Company has now done an official reveal through a video and web page, giving us some details, footage and screens to gawk at.
Volcanion is number 721, for those counting - thanks, Serebii - and based on the official website is definitely set to be distributed in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire next year, with full global distribution details yet to come.
Below, first of all, is the reveal trailer with gameplay footage:
The following description below is from the official website, which confirms Volcanion as a one-of-a-kind Steam Pokémon that combines the Fire and Water types.
A new Mythical Pokémon has been found in the world of Pokémon, which cannot be encountered through regular gameplay. This Pokémon's name is Volcanion!
Unlike any Pokémon discovered before it, this Pokémon is both Fire and Water type. It uses fire and water to create steam within its body, expelling explosive shock waves and boiling steam from the arms on its back. The power is said to be great enough to blow away an entire mountain, gouging out the earth and changing the shape of the land.
Finally there are some official screens below. So, are you excited about Volcanion?

Ugly.
Yeah, even when it was leaked by datamining and live memory editing a long time ago, I didn't think much of Volcanion at all.
I warned up to Diancie and Hoopa, but not this thing.
Excellent. This thing will mostly likely get a new forme or Mega Evolution for Pokémon Z and the new movie due to Diancie and Hoopa getting new forms.
Strange looking thing
I can't wait for the day we have the 1000th Pokemon.
Cool looking Pokemon, but I don't get why I can't get it as an owner of Pokemon Y.
Is it that hard to add a new Pokemon to an older game in the same generation?
X and Y getting the shaft once again. Anyway, is scald too obvious a move for this guy?
Prob going to be something like Gamestop or McDonalds like always, will prob end up getting one from the Japanese distribution on a giveaway.
@Caryslan
It's already in X and Y. They just want you to buy OR/AS.
I'll take Flamethrower and Hydro Pump to go please.
A fire and water type......if it has levitate, then it would only have like rock as its main weakness....which means that its special defense must be higher than its defense.
As for the design...... I'm assuming that its a legendary Pokemon....but why on earth would they put this on Hoenn when they might as well update it on Kalos?
@Dankykong it's called digimon XD
Is it pronounced Vol-CAN-yun or Vol-cane-E-on?
Hope we don't have to go back to McDonalds to get this. Wi-Fi on the 3DS is such a pain. Had to go into both of my son's 3DS and delete one of our home routers settings and enter the McDonadls Wi-Fi. Then it took about a minute or 2 to find and download Hoopa. We were in there for over 30 minutes Saturday morning and we didn't even get anything to eat or drink, just trying to download Hoopa. Hopefully 4DS or NX will have a much better method of connecting to WiFi.
Pokémon players in the UK will probably get to go to their favourite high street retailer GAME for a wonderful serial code to get this Legendary Pokémon.
Cool ! Looking forward to adding it to my complete dex
The only pokemon who learning Scald actually makes sense. Lol
Shocking
@Socar well its already on X and Y, there's nothing to update. Though it fits nicely in Hoenn too, with the main villains being team Magma and Aqua.
I'm slowly realizing that most pokemons hate mountains.. :S
Let me guess, distribution via code? Probably (inevitably). *flings copy of ORAS into corner >
@AVahne I bet it won't be able to learn it. Like how Wooper(which has no arms) can learn Thunder Punch and Lickilicky couldn't learn Lick in Gen I.
X/Y distribution or bust. Screw you, GameFreak.
For all we know, they may distribute Volcanion to XY as well, like with the recent Hoopa distribution in some countries. I nabbed our genie friend in both my copy of Y and my copy of OR.
That said, Volcanion looks like an interesting Pokemon, and I'm interested in learning more about it.
@Calllack It can learn it through leveling up (it's actually one of only three pokemon that can learn it through leveling).
@Calllack Lickitung*
@Socar Don't forget Electric-Type as a weakness.
I wonder why it has the massive ring on its back. What purpose does it serve for its survival? My guess is, not a thing. Probably why it's 'legendary' aka extinct.
With so many pokemon that destroy mountains, I'm surprised mountains even exist in their world.
@Porky Legendary Pokemon strike me more as Pokemon that are gods ie: they can't be killed and don't die.
Like, Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza are absolutely god Pokemon that live forever. The same can be said for Ho-Oh and Lugia, as well as the creation Trio. I think it's very likely that Arceus creates subordinates to maintain the world and its order, and that legendary Pokemon ARE these subordinates.
It was leaked through data mining after X/Y came out but sure. The article title sort of references that was well.
Looks cool to me, I wonder if it can mega evolve.
Oh, look, it's that new pokemon everyone already knows about since like two years ago, when dataminers discovered it along with Hoopa and Diancie, buried deep in X/Y's code. Hooray.
Japan: Here ya go, one wifi distribution coming right up tomorrow morning!
America: Just go all the way to Mcdonalds, buy some Mcnuggets, and connect your 3DS and maybe you'll find a location that distributes it! Just wait a little longer and we'll have Volcanion up and running soon*!
*one year later
Love the look. I thought it was odd that it is a water and fire type though.
lol, 721...
It doesn't look that great to me design-wise, but it will probably grow on me. The fire/water typing is really interesting though.
Reminds me a lot of Empoleon, in that it has two types that add some nice complimentary resistances. Steam Eruption sounds pretty nice for a signature move, and Scald is the perfect move for this guy.
The only issue I see is the weaknesses would be hard to overcome. Since it's a steam-based Pokemon and a pretty heavyweight grounded type, it would be a bit easy to lose it to a high-magnitude Earthquake or Thunder.
@Porky @BlatantlyHeroic Legendary means it appears in legends, and they're rare enough for people to know little about them.
Most of the time they're really not all that mystical, its just that humans think of them that way.
Hopefully it'll be distributed by Mystery Gift since Canada no longer has Nintendo Zones.
@rjejr YES. THIS RIGHT HERE... I hate the wifi management on 3DS. I really wish we could hold more than 3 saved connections... It's usually not too bad but I think having at least 5 or 6 would be better; this McDonald's scenario as a prime example...
...and hey while we're at it, more than 10 street passes at once!
Ugh, more Pokemon. Well, it's only one.
@TerrapinJess "more than 10 street passes at once"
Forgot all about Street Pass, never even checked after spending 30 minutes getting Hoopa. Maybe I'll check it after dinner.
And the 3 slots wouldn't be bad, if we could ad hoc or adjunct or omething to any Wi-Fi connection in range while we wer ein range. The problem with McDonalds is besides my 2 home routers - upstairs adn downstairs - we also have our local Wi-Fi company. o that's 3. But the local Wi-Fi company is also available in McDonalds, so our three 3D were hooking up to our WiFi host rather than the McDonalds Wi-Fi which we needed to be on for Hoopa. But nobody ever tells you that on Pokemon.com. And the 3DS doesn't tell you what Wi-Fi you are connected too. Seriously I've used our 3DS on numerous Wi-Fi hotspots in restaurants and hotels and I never know what 1 we are connected to. I've used smartphones and tablets for at least 5 years now and you always get alist of all avaible Wi-Fi and you just pick one. So even if 3DS only had 3 slots but had the ability to momentarily pick any WiFi in range that would be great.
Almost anywhere I go on Long Island there are several - Xfinity, CableWiFi, Optimum, and Time Warner. And then McDonalds or TGIFridays if we are in a restaurant. They need to fix it for 4DS. They should have fixed it for the "new 3DS". It's quite annoying in a household with three 3DS and so much Wi-Fi available. .
Why do people flip that it's not coming to ORAS? Jeez, XY came out over 2 years ago. It's naturally coming to the year-old new game. Not sure why Hoopa even came to XY.
Lol, I read the article title very quickly and thought it was about a Pokémon clone game that's coming to Steam, called 'Volcanion', and it's coming to 3DS for some reason!
Great design, love it 😍
I guess this is the "big reveal" from Corocoro... Event Pokémon, a mechanic I'll never understand. A Pokémon that's part of a game I own, and yet I have to wait for, with its reveal being hyped like that? What's even the point?
Wait, Fire and Water? Ugh, with that typing I have to eat my own words... which I won't.
I can finally let myself look at Volcanion after deliberately avoiding him (mostly) in Bulbapedia.
I will be getting it. I think it looks awesome
Funny story, I work with adults with disabilities, & one named Trey keeps telling me about this pokémon. I.can now, finally tell him that it's finally being distributed & never have to hear "Is Volcanion out yet?" Again. Same question every day for 2 years now, it got on my nerves.
@rjejr Wow, I was going to tell you that the 3DS connects automatically to Nintendo Zone locations like McDonald's, but that sucks. It's also pretty strange, since in my experience the wi-fi range on the 3DS is really weak. I always have to be inside a building that offers free wi-fi, and even then the connection isn't always strong enough to work. I also only get inconsistent connectivity by being on a different floor or the other side of my parents' house from their router.
@Socar Nope, it gets Water Absorb as its ability (which does make perfect sense), leaving it with weaknesses to Rock, Ground, and Electric; and it has 120 base Defense compared to 90 base Special Defense.
So doofy. So, so doofy.
Disappointed that this is the "Big news", since Volcanion has been datamined for years now.
Please, Nintendo UK, don't make me hold the qeue up at GAME just to get a bloody DLC...
Diancie got a Mega, and Hoopa got a forme change. What's the other method of changing a Pokemon that we know of?
Primal Volcanion confirmed
Likely not going to be in my copy of Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon but that game already has 720 Pokemon and Mega forms to collect and play as so not having Volcanion in it would be fine. An update to add him in would be quite generous. Over all this game is great and tons of replay value and easier than ever to recruit your favorite Pokemon check it out
@Socar Perhaps because Hoenn is a place where water and land collapsed, where Kyogre and Groudon fought each other? Seems fiting.
@Porky The "ring" opens in the middle, releasing the steam. It seems to be working as steam circulation, the water is boiling inside the pokemon's body.
@3dsgeek333 I would prefer McDonalds... I'm still hoping for a Hoopa distribution code here...
@BlatantlyHeroic I'm thinking some legendaries may have god-like status (Arceus, partialy Creation trio), but many of them seem to be pokemon that are more powerful than others, and rare.
On the topic: the video is pretty... underwhelming. One shot of an artwork, few gameplay images and "new pokemon!" all over it. I think it would be better to make the video later, when more juicy info come (the movie anouncement, the actual distribution, formes/evolutions, Z or something), especially when most of us already know about the pokemon existence for about 2 or so years. The hype is long gone. But I guess it works as a quick advertisement for YouTube followers.
And what's up with all the mountain hate? At this rate Pokemon world will be flat as a pancake!
I already have this...thing, the shiny version as well thanks to data mining and power saves.
@BulbasaurusRex It was funny, I asked my kids to try out Nitneod Zone in case they had to go through there to get Hoopa, but we just got a message saying Nitneod Zone was kaput. Which I think I knew, but I forgot.
And the 3DS wifi range isn't good, 1 of the reasons I have a Wi-Fi router upstairs connected w/ a 25' Ethernet cable to my wi-fi router in the basement so they can play wherever, but that takes up 2 slots, 1 for each, and the cable company wi-fi is the other b/c that works almost everywhere. Which is a pain whenever we spend a few days in a hotel, or visit my parents or sisters, trying to gt them online.
NX just has to be better. Maybe they can get Amazon to help them out, their tablet products have pretty good wi-fi w/ dual antennas.
Are we sure it won't be on X and Y as well? Diancie went separately on XY then ORAS, but Hoopa was for both at McDonald's.
