Data miners are notorious for getting ahold of footage and information ahead of the release of major announcements, typically because developers sometimes tend to put out software updates ahead of the announcements themselves. The process doesn't seem to be overly difficult, it just requires a computer and enough technical savvy to know how to view update data by using one. At any rate, an update has recently gone out ahead of tomorrow's Super Smash Bros. Direct, and it contains some very interesting information.
Of course, Cloud is the focus of the update, and it seems that the bulk of the information is related to him and Midgar, the Final Fantasy 7 themed stage. The victory video that plays after beating classic mode with Cloud is also available, and we included that below if you're interested.
Additionally, there will be the chocobo themed hat that we saw in the last Direct, but there's an additional Mii Fighter outfit that'll no doubt draw lots of attention. It seems that there will be an outfit based on Geno, the character from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Geno is one of those characters that it seems has always been a suggestion for the Smash Bros. roster, so it's good to see that he'll finally be showing up in a Smash Bros. game in some form.
Aside from that, it's mostly just tweaks and balances to the existing game, though do bear in mind that there could very easily be more that the data miners didn't find. Additionally, there could be another update coming in the near future with much more content, and it's being delayed so the surprise doesn't get spoiled.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to Cloud's introduction? What do you think of a Geno costume? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Yeah, I was afraid of a leak happening, but this one seems to be somewhat meaningless. We pretty much knew all this already, except for the geno costume.
Hopefully there aren't any further leaks!
I hope Cloud doesn't take up TOO much of the direct. Also, I have a feeling he'll be released tomorrow...
I knew I said this before and I will say it again: I hope this direct covers more than just characters, stages, and Mii costumes.
The only thing leaked was the Geno hat. Everything else is stuff we've already known about.
@StephenYap3 What else would it cover?
I don't really like the costumes, but hey, at least we could have Geno in some form in the game. Really looking forward to the broadcast, I hope there are a lot of surprises, and I keep dreaming of playing using Isaac, well, we'll see tomorrow
@MitchVogel The last four waves of DLC, we've gotten the usual and those are characters (only for the first two, though), stages (not until the second wave), and Mii costumes.
As much as I enjoyed those, I am hoping that this direct will probably reveal another DLC that is not characters, stages, or Mii costumes for once. Don't get me wrong, I love Super Smash Bros 4 and its DLC, but I want DLC that is not like the usual we have gotten for the last four waves, especially since this would be the last presentation of Smash 4. Of course, Adventure Mode is not an option since Sakurai shot that down
Nope, nope, nope, nope. Not spoiling myself this time. We already had enough of this crap and I don't want another famous character like Ryu get leaked again.
It isn't a major leak so it's fine. Honestly, though, I was completely against Cloud being in Smash. I always viewed Smash as a Nintendo crossover above all else and thus, I wanted the amount of 3rd party content be limited but also for those 3rd Party charcters that got in to be Nintendo-related. Like Mega-Man with his classic NES games. Or Sonic who's been a long-time rival of Mario's. That's why I wasn't that big of a fan of Snake being in Brawl and thus, I don't miss him.
I was especially against the inclusion of Cloud because he and his game mark the cut of FF from Nintendo. I'd much rather have had Black Mage or Crono be playable because they stem from classic (S)NES games made by Square. But I guess I can't make him not happen so I might as well enjoy the ride. Sure hope we get a Sephiroth costume, too. And I'll be mad if no version of One-Winged Angel plays on Mdgard (and please with vocals!).
Also I've never wanted Geno in Smash either. I don't mind him at all, but I much rather have Paper Mario or Fawful. Especially Paper Mario could be made awesome with him using lots of his partners. He could even use that dimension-switch ability from SPM to act as a dodge! Now that would be sick!
I'm withholding judgement until tomorrow, there may be more to this.
Cloud Amiibo coming?
I have a feeling that Cloud will be released immediately after the direct, alongside an additional surprise character (who may or may not be the first Smash Ballot fighter), and perhaps the N64 Smash game for Wii U VC.
Considering that this is the last Smash 4 Direct ever, I suspect that they will be pulling out all the stops. Seems redundant to have a direct for a year-old game just to tell us what we already know.
Geno is a nice touch.
As for Cloud, maybe, just maybe, the HD remake for FFVII will come to the NX.
Very doubtful but the fact that they were able to get him into Smash makes me suspect it. in fact FFVII being the cut off point would make this a dramatic return to Nintendo. Plus we know an amiibo is on the way, so it'd be nice to have a game to go with it.
So it's still up in the air as to whether Cloud is the player's choice ballot character or if it's a yet to be revealed character. It would be smart of NIntendo to save an update for as yet unannounced characters for after the the direct. They'd be well aware of data miners by now so taking a simple precaution like that to prevent spoilers would seem logical to me.
Seeing as British citizens never got Super Smash Bros. on the N64, I would be absolutely thrilled if the game was available on Virtual Console as soon as the Smash Direct comes to an end.
Anything else would be a nice bonus, although I hope it isn't just another re-reveal of Cloud and an outfit based on Geno. Will we see the results of the Smash Ballot that came about a little while ago?
I thoroughly hope so!
@Goldengamer88 Since Cloud represents Square and Nintendo's falling out, I like to think that having him in Smash is a way of patching things up. Hopefully it at least means the remake is being ported to the NX.
@Aerona I'd rather Front Mission wanzers instead.
@Peek-a-boo What? Super Smash Bros. did get a PAL release. I still have my copy I brought back in 1999.
@RadioShadow They were referring to Wii U VC, Japan has it but not NA and EU.
By "tomorrow's" you mean the one that's happening tonight, right? Right?!
@TDA - How does it leaking affect you negatively? Just don't look at them.
Thank you for not posting the leak in the article title!
I eventually buckled and checked it, but it's nice to not be exposed to leaks if you're looking to preserve the suprise!
Couldn't resist clicking on this article but glad nothing really big was leaked
I'm positive they wouldn't hold a direct just to announce this.
you know i'm glad an FF character is in smash, still seems a little strange to pick Cloud over Terra or Cecil
unless those rumours about the Remake coming to NX are true?
Woop woop! Downloading the Geno costume!
@GH05T obviously. Nintendo said all dlc characters get one.
Don't really care for Smash Bros to be honest
@MitchVogel thanks for the way this article is titled/presented. I have been one of the people whining in forums for less 'blatant/obvious' spoilers in articles of leaked info from NL. This is a perfect example of a headline that still gives a choice to readers over whether they want to know more or not. Thank you , this is the way to do it
Welcome to the spoiler era.
@ULTRA-64 But you still couldn't resist reading it anyway
I completely agree though, there's nothing worse than having a spolier suddenly hit you in the face.
It would be a really short NDirect if this is all the news. Looking forward to tomorrow, hopefully Cloud releases at the same time and maybe something more about the beloved Super Mario RPG is revealed.
The hype is real. Glad a character wasn't revealed. Welp see you guys in 10 hours
Final Smash Bros direct......2 mins long talking about Cloud being in it with 5 mins of Nintendo executives laughing.....then it cuts to a 15 min Yo-Kai Watch promo blaming them for the trolling
I'd rather just have Geno added as a character instead of a Mii Fighter costume....
Spoilers. I am definitely not even going to attempt looking at this article.
@tysonfury But thanks for joining us anyway! Grab a chair!
Yeah, there's got to be more to this direct. Surely they wouldn't do a whole direct just to tell us more about what they already told us in another direct. Of course they'll talk about Cloud, his moveset, his stage, etc. But that, even with the Geno consolation prize, doesn't seem "final direct"-worthy.
Curious about the FF7 inclusion in Smash though. It kind of seems odd for 3DS/Wii U owners to get this, but not the FF7 remake, or even the original FF7. I'm going to bet that at some point (probably not from this direct, since this is a Smash direct) we get a FF7 port, and I'm betting it's for the 3DS.
Please be putting SMRPG on VC
@Squashy this was win -win for me as I have no interest in smash, just can't get into it. Gave me a chance to wade into the comments without ruining anything for myself. I like surprises
@earthboundlink Well that makes sense, PC version of FF7 on the 3DS. Wii U isn't getting the remake, probably wouldn't run it, and it will be long gone before it releases, at least the last part as we know it will be episodic. And we don't know enough about NX. But Square does a fairly good job at supporting the 3DS, so it could wind up on there.
I'll be watching with my kids this afternoon, and I hope it's more than just Cloud. There is no way he won the poll, how many people would have voted for him? Goku would have gotten more votes.
Maybe Sakurai will give us a hint at what he'll be working on next. Hopefully something other than SSB on NX.
@GoldenGamer88 I didn't want cloud either. Like I think a mage or character that has been on a Nintendo console would be fine. Doesn't feel right, unless ff7 came to Wii u or its announced he was the ballot winner
@rjejr Alsp there is a chance of final Fantasy 1 it come on the Wii vc in NA also it is on the 3ds vc in japan also maybe GB final Fantasy games. But this could be a decoy for the data miners
The gene thing is a leak but the ending video is nothing. So it will just be mostly one thing with probably them talking about the ballet winners.
Seriously, the people who don't want anything spoiled.... why are you here commenting or even on the article?
@FullbringIchigo I was really waiting for Terra (and her two forms), Cecil would have been nice but a little disappointing (he would have been yet another sword user).
Cloud, as much as I liked FFVII, never had the same taste as those two older heroes.
@Peek-a-boo Really:? I suppose those hundreds of hours my friends and I all spent playing Smash on the N64 in my home just outside of Liverpool was all in my head then...
Good to see that Nintendo has finally learned that people will dig into files and find surprises in advance, and so they need to wait to push updates with meaningful data in them until after the announcement. If the Geno thing is in fact true, at least it was a relatively small surprise, but again, it's about time!
@earthboundlink I have my doubts we'll get any version of FF7 on Nintendo hardware given the amount of effort the port would likely take, but I'd buy it in a heartbeat, especially in some kind of bizarro world where it'd be a 3D Classic of some kind. I think there's a 0% chance of it happening, but they can't stop me from dreaming.....
I'm hoping that the Cloud in Smash is a sign of things to come. Not necessarily all new square games coming out for nintendo consoles - but at LEAST we could have the past virtual console games to be brought over - Secret of Mana - Final Fantasy games - and even My Life as a Darklord. But don't you dare bring King's Knight over. I made that mistake before - I won't make it again.
i want banjo&kazooie and k.krool
It will all depend on the length really if its around 30-40 minutes then I really doubt they will just be talking about Cloud
@ikki5 Mostly because I heard people saying it wasn't as big as a new character or stage. hen I say I don't want to be spoiled when it comes to leaks it means I don't want to be spoiled over big things. This is rather harmless
@andrew20 "3ds vc in japan"
There are Final Fantasy games on the 3DS in Japan? Do you mean spin-off games like Crystal Chronicles or the main series numbered games? Sorry, I don't follow game releases Japan.
@Aerona 'At least means the remake is being ported to NX' what?? That's literally the most that should happen. The least is following through with DQ11. Keep in mind SE is a business. FF has sold infinitely more after 6 on the SNES. After the N64, GC and Wii U flops, Nintendo's lucky anyone cares that another system is coming out.
The last 3 years of the Wii is a hole that Nintendo still hasn't climbed out of. Why would anyone invest in a six year downturn?
By the time NX is even seen, Zelda will have been cancelled for the Wii U for that, the 3DS' last original title will release stateside (Bravely Second) and Nintendo will be bleeding casuals with terrible mobile games.
Forget 3rd party: Nintendo's going to follow every other Japanese gaming relic circling the drain and go mobile exclusive.
In less than 2 years, their positive rep as a decent developer will be wiped away, as one that misses opportunities, ignores fans, cheaps out and lacks meaningful insight and necessary passion.
All they've done for 14 months is ride Smash and Splatoon. Seeing games like Paper Jam, Ultra Smash, XCX, Yarn Yoshi, Fatal Frame, Devil's Third and others not worth mentioning either crash and burn or be entirely hollow experiences, it's not surprising.
What is surprising is any optimism from the fans. You'd think people would clue into a dead legacy from a company that passed long before Iwata, but no.
Still boatloads of idealism and well wishes.
Too bad Nintendo doesn't get reality, they could have done so much more with their talents than singing and dancing like broken animals.
@SahashraLA Wow you typed a lot to say very little. Impressive.
@StephenYap3 Characters and Stages are literally the only DLC worth caring about.
The only other important thing in the entire game is balance, and hopefully that'll be addressed before post-launch support ends. Samus and Mewtwo are inexcusably shit, and there are still some characters that are way too powerful.
Life must be so boring for people who have to hack into news we would get in less than 24 hours at the time just to spoil only a tidbit or two.
@MarioPhD the pc edition would be easy
I want Geno a lot but so does my ex, that makes me very happy because she hates Mii costumes whereas I'm okay with them.
@DankyKong As one of those people, I can confirm this.
@faint Easy sounds like quite the overstatement. The architectures are vastly different to my knowledge, for Wii U or 3DS, making a port anything but simple. I know both systems could easily handle the game in terms of raw horsepower, but I can't speculate how "easy" it would be to take the game from the PC or PSX architecture and port it over to the 3DS or Wii U. I imagine it'd be easier overall for the Wii U since it's far more powerful, and could handle emulating other hardware more easily if the port was a bit lower-effort, but the move to either would likely take at least a decent bit of time and resources. I don't think the Wii U userbase is big enough to justify the port, however. Notice that we still don't see the game coming to the 360 or Xbox One, both systems with larger user bases and a more similar architecture to the PC already, likely making a port even easier to manage. I guess, in short, I can see a lot of reasons it'd be complicated, unlikely, and anything but easy to do. Certainly not impossible, and despite owning the PC version I'd definitely buy a Wii U or 3DS port in a heartbeat, but I'm still highly pessimistic about the possibility.
Cloud amiibo? I will make a spot on the shelf ready.
@SahashraLA I agree with everything said in your post. As a fan, I'm done. Zero Mission and Zelda U will be it for me as far as future purchases go.
This isn't enough for an entire direct.
@SahashraLA Not sure if you ar being ignorant or just plain stupid. First off Nintendo has made it clear NX will be their core focus going forward. Mobile is just to serve as another avenue of profit. They are not cancelling Zelda U they have sunk way too much time and money into that game at this point. Last time I checked they got back into the black long ago. No insight or passion you say they explain things such as Iwata asks or the fact they still make some of the most polished well crafted games to grace the industry. If you are trying to be a troll you are doing a pretty miserable job at it
@Wolfgabe I hope you enjoy the NX. It will be interesting to see if the console even comes close to Wii U numbers.
@GoldenGamer88 I'm with you on Paper Mario. Fingers crossed!
@GoldenGamer88 I hope you realize that Solid Snake, started out on the NES and MX8. He was added to the game because of Twin Snakes being released on the GC. He very much belonged.
As for Cloud He has never been on a nintendo console before and FFVI is such an over rated game and unless they are going to announce that FFVI Remasted is coming to the Wii U he should never have gotten put into Smash Bros.
Paper Mario Would be crap .
VII*
@Consti2tion Paper Mario could have a wonderful move set. He'd be a great addition to the roster.
@Consti2tion But he and his series are more known for their entries on PlayStation. But yeah, I forgot that Metal Gear on NES was a thing (even though I jwatched the Grumps play it a few days ago xD). Yeah, I guess that makes him a bit more justified. But oh well, Konami is butthurt over Kojima anyway so no Snake for Smash 4! Especially because it's Corrin and Bayonetta!
