Xenoblade Chronicles X is now so close we can practically taste it, and there's good reason to get excited - the game boasts one of the biggest open worlds yet seen on a Nintendo console. A world that size means that loading times can be an issue, so Nintendo has kindly provided players who plan to purchase the disc version of the game with downloadable data packs to speed things up.
North American Wii U owners already have the option to download these packs ahead of launch day, and come Monday European players will get the chance to do the very same, according to a Nintendo representative:

Xenoblade Chronicles X launches on December 4th in both North America and Europe. If you want to see why those downloadable data packs are so important, check out our videos below which give some sense of the title's incredible scale.

So how about if you plan on downloading the game?
@Humphries90 If you go digital you won't need these since they are included in the game file. These are for retail version only. They didn't say anything about pre-downloading the entire game.
I'm buying this game digitally anyway, but has there been any announcements that one can pre-purchase and download the whole game before December 4th in Europe as well? It will surely take some hours to download and install...
A Nintendo game that releases on the same day in BOTH US and EU?
Is Nintendo sick? Does it need a DOC-TOR?
Thanks for the info.
I had hoped downloading the data packs would make the files size of the full game smaller (so it would be quicker to download day 1). It's going to be like 2 days before I can play the game with my download rate.
Great!
Hopefully this applies to us Australians, too.
I usually download all my games but with Xenoblade X being such a big download & my internet speed being slow I decided to buy it at retail. Plus I couldn't resist preordering the Limited Edition
@Humphries90 There's no reason to believe they won't allow preload too. This mean you can download the full game Monday and start playing the minute the game releases.
@RennanNT Nintendo of Europe have yet to do that with any game as far as I'm aware of.
@Humphries90 I was hoping for that too but it seems that it's not possible.I plan on buying digital but not directly through the Eshop as I've seen it a lot cheaper elsewhere,so even if they do offer the pre-download option I wouldn't be able take advantage of it.I'm going to be waiting 24 hours at least for it to finish.
@Humphries90 just buy it retail, then you might even get it a couple of days before Friday.
@manu0 I live in central China with a UK Wii U. Physical would take weeks haha.
I have had a pre-download for at least one game I got from the eshop, can't remember which one it was though. I can't see why they wouldn't offer pre-downloads for a game this huge.
@Humphries90 Smash had preload in EU:

I think it just so happens that most (if not all) games since then were just about a couple GBs so NoE thought it was not necessary, but this game is huge, plus they are allowing data pack preload so not offering preload would only create unnecessary displeasure from fans with Nintendo.
I gotta remember to buy myself an external hard drive to transfer my eshop games so I have space for these packs.
Does Nintendo have a list of suggested models or just that they recommend an externally powered one? Also does it need to be FAT32 formatted?
Pip Pip old bean Indeed.. lol

Cant wate for this game lol iv wanted it from its very 1st reveal trailer and haveing realy enjoyed the Xenoblade on Wii im realy excited for a even larger world to explore.
I'm downloading the entire game. I have a EXHDD and I'd really like to save my disc drive. Xenoblade Chronicles killed my Wii.
I'll have to check whether I even have enough space for those files.
If you don't have a hard drive you can forget it. These files are MASSIVE.
@FX102A Since now I just moved all my biggest games to a cheap 16GB flashdrive to free space for the data packs. Y cables are fine for self-powered hard disks and I'd go for a Western Digital: it all depends on how big Neo Fast Racing will be!
Do they have to be downloaded on the internal 32gb memory or it's fine on the ext.hdd?
Great. I'm getting the retail collectors edition, so downloading these prior to launch will be nice, but first I need to find my spare portable Hard Drive
Ugh...I can't find the special edition for sale anywhere in Ireland. I think I have around 16 GB left on my Wii U's HD so I can d/load some of these packs.
@Humphries90 Oh, okay
truly hyped for this, don't care even if its reviews a 5, gonna be picking this up, fatal frame, devils third, triforce heroes, all the games I was looking for, turned out underwhelming, and just bad, this one and Fast Racing Neo, are sure bets. also the very last ones to come out in 2015 lol, the wait has been long, but its def coming to an end very soon, very excited for this one!
But will the game load quicker if it has both the data packs AND the Disc? GTA V had that benefit of running the game from both.
Do you need to pay for these data packs
Well, that means Shovel Knight and MH3U get the boot. Nothing will stand between me an the greatest game of the year! NOTHING!!!
@invictus4000 Base pack owners are indeed screwed, but people who have the Black version can just make some space.
@Kaze_Memaryu
Haha i felt the same way. So pumped for this game I was like I WILL HAVE THOSE PACKS NOW! Had to delete Metroid Prime Trilogy and Wind Waker HD. This is what finally kicked me into buying a hard drive. Lol
@The_BAAD_Man
All 4 packs ended up totalling 10GB on my systems hard drive. At least that's what it says in my data management menu. The eshop says 15GB though.
@andrea987 I love your profile GIF!!! I'm Canadian but my Nan was from theUK and brought over awesome cartoons for us. Sherlock Hound was my absolute favourite!
I'm going to buy a physical version of this game. Does anyone remember what the Nintendo Direct said about the packs? I think Bill said you should at least get the Basic Pack? I'm down to like 7 GB's so I may just get the minimum I need for the game.
Nintendo needs better storage on their consoles.
Wow, this game is really massive. I can feel the hype train finally approaching, wasn't that hyped for it before. But now that the release is imminent I'm really looking forward to it!
I gotta agree with some people who critisize Nintendo's marketing of the game. On other consoles it would be a blockbuster, surely a game for which you couldn't miss the advertisement.
But no, you don't see ANYTHING about it ANYWHERE (aside from Nintendo-centric websites like NL). I think maybe two of my friends know of this game at best.
Whoops. I forgot to download the data packs myself. I'd better do that.
@WiiLovePeace I'm an Aussie too, and feel the same way, but from what I can tell Europe basically means Australia as well.
I too got my limited edition of the game and can't wait!
Will these data packs include the option to play the game in Japanese audio with English subtitles?
If not, why the hell are they not giving that as an option?
@Nintendofan83 Thanks, grew up with it (and Nausicaa, Goldrake/Grendizer, Lupin III, etc). Good times.
Still, on topic: nobody knows whether they need to be installed, these files? Internal only or external hdd is fine too?
@andrea987 I can't be 100% but I'd be amazed if it mattered where you saved the files. Mine will be going on to my external drive. Hmm, mental note, check storage on external hard drive!
@Kolzig The audio files can be very huge (for example the pal version of Fallout 4 is 13GB bigger than the US/UK version) and maybe they just decide to cut the dual audio option at its root...
I guess I use this opportunity. When the game arrives, I am immediately set.
@invictus4000 Thanks for the heads up I ordered the special edition from Nintendo's UK store last night. It's absolutely ridiculous though that they don't deliver to Ireland, so I have to have it mailed to a friend and have him mail it to me :-/
No lunch day playing for me but I guess it's worth it for this game even though the £ to € conversion nearly made me not get it. I've never paid so much for a game before!
Are these available yet in Aus/NZ?
