Up to this point, Splatfests have generally been lighthearted affairs. Whether it be something like cats vs. dogs, Decepticons vs. Autobots, or pirates vs. ninjas; the competitions have been primarily set up to poll the masses for their favorites or opinions on popular subjects. Evidently, Japan has chosen that it's time to ask something that'll perhaps demand a bit more self-reflection before casting a vote.
Nintendo's Japanese Twitter account recently posted a tweet regarding the upcoming Splatfest for the region. Rather than something lighthearted, this one will be a semi-serious topic on whether love or money is more important. Interestingly enough, the tweet urged fans to think about it before voting and asked which one they think will save the world. The results of this should be very interesting, indeed!
What do you think? Is money more important or is love? Do you think Splatfests will occasionally start to touch on more serious topics? Drop us a comment in the section below.

That's interesting. However, I doubt Money will have such a big chance of winning for, well, obvious reasons.
Money leads to more attractive girls.
Neither will save the world. Love gets you nowhere and fades with time. Money fuels greed and is used selfishly. Both will lead the world to ruin
@Dezzy
Money leads to more devastating divorces
Love any day
Japan asking the real questions!
The sad thing is, many of the people answering this splatfest might be Japanese businessmen, without enough time to spend with their family. People who might struggle with this choice all of their adult life
Meanwhile in Europe, dust vs. fluff... Fluff obviously.
'It's all for love, L.O.V.E.' Michael Jackson, This Is It. Love is important!
Love of course, and Ninjas...
What the heack are we gonna get in europe?
Boiling vs steaming?
Wait, so the twitter ask if money or love can save the world? That is quite the question...
I mean, good feelings and caring for others is important for a better world, but same time you can't solve most problems in this world without paying some very heavy bills...
GAH!!! Not my Splatfest, I shouldn't go beyond the tip of the iceberg, but surely it's interesting to see such a more meaningful debate... that will be solved by tossing ink everywhere XD
This is like the first good splatfest theme and non japanese will probably never get this.
Seeing how is Japan i guess money will be the most popular. It will be sad if i am correct!
Hmm..so greed and lust..lol two deadly sins right there. xD
Naturally, the winner of this topic will be decided by which side can fling more ink at the other one.
Next month's Splatfest will be Platonic Epistemology v Arisotelian Metaphysics
Well if you want Nintendo's love you'll need some money for all the amiibo.
Wow, both Japan and the US are getting great choices for the next Splatfest. I can't wait to be disappointed at Europe's theme.
Here's one for you Nintendo... Teabags, round or square? No I'm being serious here...
So it comes down to this. The question that breaks down the fundamental elements that drives the human race down the road of modern evolution. Love or Money. The Spiritual or The Physical. Lust or Power. A question that will either unite us or tear us asunder. The only way to solve this human dilima is through..........TURF WAAAAAARSSSS!!!!!!
Love everytime- people matter more than anything in life and in reference to an earlier comment, love and respect can gain an attractive partner moreso than money
Splatfest just got real
@Just_Ethan Its better than the Europes version lately. I just dont get NoE sometimes tidy vs messy north pole vs south pole it all seems silly
What if Shakespeare was deciding the Splatfests? To be or Not to be? Anyone? No?
This playing out in UK politics. Money is winning
@stinky_t lol brilliant
@MitchVogel Okay, I admit I LOL'd.
Of course love is important but it can only go so far. We can't solve the world's money with JUST love. Both things need to work together.
They say money can't buy you happiness; no, but it can damn sure buy you the limo that drives you around looking for it
No joke, I love it when kid-friendly games ask contemplate left and right wing elements
I don't care too much for money, money can't buy me love
Easy choice for me. Love.
I love money. Since I don't live in Japan I don't have to decide. I predict Europe's splatfest theme will be Western vs Eastern Hemisphere.
I hope love wins; I wouldn't be surprised if money wins by a long shot against love, though. To me, love is more important than money.
Europe: Potato vs. Bacon
Next splatfest: communism vs democracy
Money can`t buy me love...........
But love can`t buy anything!
Sorry but I gotta go with the thing that allows me to keep living... MONEY!!!
Love is too general...
What kind of love are we talking about anyway, because love is not the same thing as love which is not the same thing as love...
EDIT: There are some fantastic comments here.
Money leads to greed !
Love is hope and natural bonds ~
The Irony is you need money to buy the game and to pay for internet, electricity and everything else. I guess if someone love you enough, they can provide all of this for free, but then someone else will be paying for it.
Money in a weird way is what keeps us together in this tech savvy age.
@OddworldCrash Dust vs Sand
Of course I'd choose love over money myself...but screw romance. I'd choose money over romance any day.
@EverythingAmiibo Japanese businessmen don't play games. They work 32 hours a day. Just look at Keiji Inafune. He doesn't play games.
Most people don't understand what true love is. And I mean TRUE love, not infatuation or even of the romantic type. True love is laying your life down for another. True love is making sacrifice for others, even those who hate you.
People don't know what real love is.
At first glance I'd wanna vote "Love", but true love doesn't exist to me (it feels like something you could only achieve in a dream). I'll have to go with money since I've always liked expensive stuff, even though I still like the idea of "true love".
@Just_Ethan I had no idea you had a Nintendo Life account! Pretty cool to see you here!
So you pick love over money huh? I wish I could say the same for me, but I'm just not cut out to be all lovey-dovey.
Assuming the topics get more and more serious, eventually, all matches will turn into 3 minute philosophical discussions using the "boo yah!" and "come on!" messages as morse code.
"Team Subjective Morality Vs. Team Objective Morality!" Boo-yah!
Seriously though, this is already complicated enough for Splatfest. One can love money, and one can show love of others through money. Not to mention the difference between a view of love as simply pleasant emotions and a view of love as say, sacrificial actions, or simply doing good to others.
@MJKOP pyramidal teabags of course!
@JaxonH Yes, only you understand what true love is, oh great sage the wise and ponderous
@JaxonH you're right... but I do believe I know what love is... and it's powerful! I love my family I'm in love with my children, I'm crazy about them. I tell you something else, I love Michael Jackson, I got told for many years it was infatuation, I'd 'grow out of it', but.... 23years later and I've no doubt I have genuine love for him and I go outta my way to show that, even more so now he's gone. You seem very passionate, what do you love?
@LemonSlice woah woah woah, what the heck are you doing?! This is supposed to be fun, don't go throwing PYRAMID teabags in there too!
@pikminfan22 'I think I told ya, I'm a lover not a fighter!' The Girl Is Mine, Thriller... But I reckon you already knew that lol
@stinky_t, Team Not to Be would be a very depressing bunch.
Money has a practical use, Love does not.
I'd take money over neural-chemical reactions that make you act like an idiot any day.
@khaosklub
And it was money that led many to become Tingles and fall under the dominion of Uncle Rupee!
@Galvanic_Arcvn That's not true. Love can be very useful; it causes loyalty, bonds, dedication, etc...
What's next Science vs Religion? Till now they've marketed these Splatfests to children, and I don't really think it's an appropriate thing to ask kids to think about. The comments above are proof of that.
@Aromaiden I said 'practical use' as in: infrastructure, technology, communication, etc. Things people need and everything 'Love' can do can be achieved though other means like: respect, ideals, fear and manipulation.
@Galvanic_Arcvn I'm aware that you said "practical use", and the examples that I listed are practical, just not in the specific sense that you're using it. As the denotative definition of "practical" is something that can be appropriately and reasonably done or used.
Love includes respect and can truely accomplish all of which fear and manipulation can do, but with greater longevity and far more positive effects. Besides, love is an integral and significant emotion, and is part of what makes us human.
@MJKOP
A fantastic response. Well said. Yes, you indeed seem to know.
The comment was meant to provoke thought. A lot of people throw the word around loosely nowaday which has reduced it's meaning to near worthless status.
@JaxonH "A lot of people throw the word around loosely nowaday which has reduced it's meaning to near worthless status."
Tell me about it.
Wow, that's quite a serious Splatfest! I like the idea, though....
Definitely a pretty deep Splatfest theme. Next they'll do a worldwide Splatfest that decides the last Smash Ballot pick: Shovel Knight or Shantae.
Wow, they're getting existential
Need money to put food on the table for your loved ones...
Huh. I would want to say love, but divorce does tragic things to ones psyche.
So money it is...
This is hilarious, Japan has been struggling for so long with marriages, and sex is sold to them on every corner. Sounds like Nintendo is trying to shame the Japanese.
