We were lucky enough to sit down with the one and only Charles Martinet this week and pop some questions to him about how he got to voice Mario, what he loves about the role and why he thinks Super Mario Maker is so special.
We also picked out some of the best questions that you guys put forward recently - you can catch his replies in the latter part of the interview.
Give it a watch and let us know what you think - and like Charles himself says, don't forget to subscribe to the Nintendo Life YouTube channel.

I probably would've gotten Mario maker if it had multiplayer like the last Mario games.
@Xaessya I'm sure they considered it, and discovered problems with it.
He is so cool and animated. I still can't get over the fact that he is Parthunnax. Doesn't even sound like his normal speaking voice.
Only thing I'd ask is about the Wario voices and why they sound different in some games. (like in Mario Party it's like a deep voice, while the WarioWare voice seems...normal? lol. I dunno, Wario's voice seems more fitting in his own games)
Love this guy. Every video i see if him I like him more. Haha
One of the nicest people you'll ever meet in the world of video games. Awesome video guys! Also a long one...you should make an interview/fan questions version
I wish I would have known you were doing questions. Charles had some small roles in David Fincher movies and I've always wanted to know if he'd ever met him!
I love how jolly and happy he is. He pretty much IS Mario in real life, except without the jumping, hammering, he's older looking than Mario, and lacking the giant turtle arch-nemesis.
I am so jealous that you get to talk to him in person. I wish Nintendo would make a Mario game with Mario speaking full sentences.
Watching this whilst flicking through the Super Mario Maker art book was a treat, time to dive into the game!
What a guy!
It's great listening to Charles. He always seems like a genuinely kind and interesting person.
so happy you answered my question thankyou so much!
Charles is a great guy. It's hard to imagine what Mario would be like today without the combination of Miyamoto's character and Charle's distinctive voice.
What a thoroughly lovely chap!! He seems so nice. Excellent interview. Thank you
Martinet has a really unique energy to him. When a person affiliated with Nintendo says "it's fun working for Nintendo", I always question that notio. But with this guy, he just says "I love working with Nintendo, it's so much fun", and all I can do is nod and smile.
He's a really outstanding personality, and everything he says seems just so genuine, it's almost unreal. Can't help but like him!
@Toadsfriend Aww, thank you!
@davetheshrew
Man, what an extremely likeable guy. His enthusiasm is absolutely contagious, I just have to smile along with all his little jokes and stories and even gasp life lessons.
Super fun, well made interview~
@Megumi It seems that Nintendo didn't always have a consistent lineup of voice actors for Mario games in the beginning. Wario was voiced by Thomas Spindler in the early Mario Party games and the Japanese ver. of Mario Kart 64 but by Charles Martinet in just about everything else. See here for the complete list of Wario's voice roles: http://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/characters/Super-Mario-Bros/Wario/
I just love how sincere Mr. Martinet is with his career and his fans. I expect some sort of primadonna behavior to be commonplace among actors of his level of notoriety, but no, he is truly a genuine and wonderful man. He is more than worthy to be representing Mario's name, and he fits in perfectly with the attitudes that the rest of Nintendo's staff give off. It just makes you feel happy to be supporting a company filled with people like these.
Methinks that Charles and Robin Williams are long lost brothers
Would never have thought that a guy who says "Hello, it's-a-me!" and "Woohoo!" for a living is so philosophical
@Pandaman Which David Fincher movies?!
Charles Martinet is the freaking best. I love him. He's endlessly fascinating and pretty much the voice of my video game childhood.
@BluStreak I wonder how he would look with a moustache and a red cap...
@Damo He plays a role in The Game with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn, and he does a voice for Zodiac. Weird, huh?
Oh my...hahaha! You sorta asked him my question about if Mario spoke in a full sentence. I was manly just wanting to hear Charles to speak sentences with Mario's voice. :'D
Anyway, this was awesome to watch. Good Q&A.
@Pandaman OMG. He's the dead dad in The Game! Just watched the trailer! Incredible! I wish I'd have known this at the time, I would have mentioned it to him!

46 second mark... mind blown. I had no idea and I LOVE that movie!
@Damo Yeah, I've always wanted to ask him about it. But it seems weird to walk up to him at E3 or Comic Con or whatever and be like "soooo..."
But hey, I'm not above it. I'll put it on my list for next year.
@whodatninja He's more than worthy enough to wear the cap of and mustache of Mario himself in my opinion. His lines consist of mostly "Woohoo!" and "Yahoo!", but he sounds so goofy and genuine when saying them, almost like he's pretending to be the character himself.
What a good dude! He seems so humble and genuine. Gives me the warm fuzzies to think that the guy who plays Mario is such a lovely guy.
It's funny when his voice gets higher he actually sounds like Mario. I'm basically obsessed with voice acting and this interview was great. I admire Charles a lot, he is a genuily friendly and nice guy. He also gave some great voice acting advice
What an awesome interview! As with a couple of other folks, my question was answered even before the selected questions for Charles, and it was fun watching the two of you interact and spend a few brief moments building and playing Mario Maker levels. I love the potential that Mario Maker represents, and I can't wait to eventually get my hands on both a Wii U and the game.
Omg I was the first question asked. Thank you so much guys, I also now have a sound clip of him saying hello gamermole..... This is literally the best thing ever
Ain't fair that my question isn't asked.......still, love Charles Martinet though. <3.
Love this website, so much great content.
He is joy and fun personified.
Just a great, funny guy. I hope he has continued success and keeps doing what he's doing.
@abbyhitter
I'd love to hear Mario talk in complete thoughts/sentences. I'm hoping they greenlight an animated Mario movie. I know they've been flirting with the idea.
@Xaessya really? you wouldn't buy one of the greatest wii u games ever?
Is it even possible not to like this man?
@gamermole Haha! You're more than welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
CHARLES MARTINET. most awsome person ever.
@Honelith We love you back!
Great interview, Charles is such a great guy.
