Splatoon's next ranked battle mode is coming to North America tomorrow night, with a European release arriving on Saturday morning.
The new mode involves carrying the Rainmaker item to the enemy's base. The Rainmaker allows the carrier to hurl cyclones of ink, but they're slow moving and will naturally become something of a target; their team mates will need to work together to protect them.
The new mode will go live in North America at 7PM PT / 10PM Eastern on 14th August, and for those with stamina in Europe that converts to 3am UK / 4am CET on Saturday.
It's yet another great addition to the shooter - will you be making it rain this weekend?

THIS IS GOING TO BE AMAZING!!!
I am actually getting bored of Splatoon, so this new mode should help it to STAY FRESH! LOL
I wonder how it will work in the rotation? Will they drop splat or tower for a few days, let this run for 24 straights hours like Splatfest? Let us choose between 2 ranked modes? OK that last part was just wishful thinking.
I was really excited when I first heard about this, but I thought in tower control we had to move the tower to OUR side, not theirs, so this seems a bit too much like tower now whereas before I thought it would be the opposite direction. I'm still excited, but not as excited as I once was.
Impressed it's coming out tomorrow, it's only been a week since the update. Those guys have got their feet on the pedal and aren't letting up. Well I guess we always knew when they would let up, Summer of Slpatoon ends Sept 11th.
I'm surprised they didn't just include this in the august update. Can't wait to try it out!
looks like its an almost instant win if they get the item could be wrong though...
How does ranked mod change? once every 4hrs? coz if so then it should be on teh news.
Ah nice! I'll definitely play it at 3AM.
I wonder if the day will come when you can play these modes in regular battles or at a least a new mode for it. Not complaining, I just like the low stakes way of playing better.
@Arlo They did. They're just unlocking it now.
Where is this going to end, keep em rolling...............DLC
@pherret022 I see what you did there...
Neat! But what about the new map? Bridge Whatsitsname!
Uh, how is it fair that the target has an Inkzooka? I guess this is a mode for chargers.
@pherret022 Can you go more in depth of why you are bored. I dont have this game yet, im still just a little scared to jump into it. How many hours do you have on it?
@rferrari24 Compared to inkzooka it has a shorter range, long charge time and massive recoil. Looks like when you're firing it you can't actually make any progress.
Just realized I've put nearly 60 hours into this game and I haven't even played the offline modes much yet! This is for sure my favorite Wii U game. If they keep the content coming through the end of the year I'll easily crack 100 hours with this
@chardir
Thanks for the insight. I was thinking about strategy, and it looks like it will be hard to approach the Inkling with the Rainmaker. Sounds fun.
@rferrari24 The rainmaker also detonates if you hold onto it for too long.
ooo nice!
This is going to be inkredible!
Another mode is always welcomed. I'm hoping for a standard team deathmatch to be added one day. I would be shocked if it happens though.
@rjejr I'm always impressed with how fast these things have been rolling out. At this point I probably shouldn't be, but Nintendo has done a great job at keeping it fun and moving forward. The whole limited roll out seems so negative on paper, but it has been a great balance and seems to have developed a satisfied fan following that is still with this game months later.
Was good to keep in mind when the "wait until the next day" feature upgrades in Mario Maker was announced. I think Nintendo is learning to manage online communities in their own way that can tick off the savvy players but makes for a happy general user base. At least with the limited size of the Wii U user base they have which does contribute to the decisions.
I just hope this "the connection is unstable" problem gets fixed (nothing on my end will work and it wasn't a problem prior to v2.0.0). Disconnections during turf wars are annoying but in ranked it is a serious stuff as it means you send yourself and your team that bit closer to the pit known as C rank.
@rjejr I seem to recall when tower control came out it was always that mode for 24 hours. Not too different to new stages always being in the rotation for 24 hours.
@rjejr BTW, that Best Buy Splatoon Wii U promo is calling to me, but I'm really tight on money for a few weeks until my first paycheck so I don't think it's going to happen. :/ Not to mention I'm just not going to have time for awhile as I'm preparing new (game oriented!) programming classes to teach.
As far as how we'd play, we have an unorthodox family room where one wall is blank so it can be projected on to (no screen) and then there is a TV like you'd maybe expect against a perpendicular wall. We were planning on using the TV for most things, but who wants to do that when you can have a wall-sized image right there. (Many advantages because we can sit in a different room and engage or disengage with exactly what the kids are watching while relaxing comfortably and we got a good deal on that projector compared to TVs at the time — it's not so great a ratio now that TVs are cheaper.)
Still never bought it. Not paying full price when the rest of the world doesn't need to.
@aaronsullivan I did see you defending the SMM rollout yesterday, but I can't get past the "date" on the screen, looks too out of place. It's not Batman, just give it to me now, I paid for it. Or unlock it level by level like every other video game ever made. It's like a bunch of guys were sitting in a room and decided - "well we already picked the worst possible date to release this in the US, let's also pick the most stupid thing we can possibly put on screen to go with it." Build 5 levels, unlock this, put a level online, unlock that, download a level, unlock the other thing. That's how these things work, reward progression, "next day" is just... well Marie's response to almost everything Callie says.
@ikki5 All I've got to say is you're missing out and it's easily worth full retail. Who cares what others paid? Good for them if they got it for less. I bought it and the amiibo 3-pack, paying almost $100 and don't regret a penny. Of course, your mileage may vary and I have 2 other people in the home getting tons of enjoyment out of it as well.
When I say missing out, I mean it, too. Most of the fun of being involved in the community as it has been playing out and expanding is now passing. Getting it all at once will be okay, but the shared experience won't last. These multiplayer-focused games are like that and this one has been much more fun than others I've gone in on like Battlefield 3 and 4. (Man was 3 terrible at managing the community with pay-to-win quickly overtaking the fun)
Sounds great, but now with three different ranked modes, the game should always offer two of the modes at once, Otherwise. It's gonna suck having to wait multiple cycles for your favorite mode to be active.
@Starwolf_UK - I'm assuming the 24 hours to start, guess I was more concerned w/ what happens after that, I just worded it poorly. 3 ranked modes every 4 hours would put them at the same times every day, AM and PM.
10 - 2 tower
2 - 6 rainmaker
6 - 10 splat
over and over and over again. And how many stages are we up to know, 12? It could be an entire week before we saw a mode and stage combo we liked.
Maybe this will entice me to try ranked battles.
@rjejr
We should play some squad battles with Jax. Since you can choose the mode and the stage there, there is a 5% probability that you will complain 4% less about Splatoon when you try it.
Plus I have been wanting to play with a team I care about since launch and have barely been able to.
@rjejr Regarding Mario Maker, that's what it feels like to you and I think many will feel the same way. I did, at first, too. I just think there are valid reasons (explained over there) to do it this way and it's really not that big of a deal to those who'll complain. It will be over and forgotten before you know it and some might even enjoy the anticipation.
That may be a big part of it, too. It's forced, but it works. Nintendo has game few and far between for Wii U. As you've often pointed out with "Summer of Splatoon" for those on board the Splatoon train, Nintendo has managed to keep the anticipation and excitement for new things coming without releasing a new game for months. Mario Maker can extend that out for a week or two, itself. It minimizes the focus on the lack of releases... for some.
This is probably the best Nintendo has ever managed the cool down of a console. The Wii just tanked beyond help. As much as Nintendo screws up customer relations, some parts are working.
@Uberchu yeah all modes change every 4 hours. check out splatoon.ink (thats a url) for more, by the way
Thank you Nintendo! Love Splat👀...have not bothered to play anything else. Effectively have bought 3 Wii U's and 3 copies of the game...my boys and I love all the new content rollouts. Ink away!
This is going to be fantastic. I'm so hyped for this. Might even stay up to 3am to play it when it first appears.
Hopefully they'll change the rotation about, overwise there'll be 3 ranked modes now, and a 1/3 chance of being able to play a particular one at any time.
Oh I'm going to like this one. To be honest I'm wondering about rotation in modes as well, I mean, 3 modes over a four hour rotation makes the chances of getting one you feel like playing at that moment rather slim.
Next update I'm mostly curious about how they'll handle the rotation mechanism next. And if they want people to bed any good at this mode, it should definitely not crop up every twelve hour period - that makes everything appear at set times and would make playing splatoon a rather dull adventure in the long term.
@ultraraichu agreed, I was hoping the same thing. I suppose Private battles with Squidboard friends will have to do for now
Yesterday, I received Wii U Fit form Nintendo, but the balance board was dead. The Nintendo rep apologized profusely. Finally, I said, "Listen, you could send me 1,000 dead balance boards, just keep those Splatoon updates coming!" Obviously Big N listened. Kidding.
Too bad we cant choose which mode we want to play
@ikki5 lots of things cost different prices in different parts of the world. So does that mean if something is cheap here and more expensive in australia you'll wait for the price to go up to buy it?
I'll play it when they fix the horrendous connection.
Aww yeaaaah.
@rjejr Actually they will let us choose. The text for it was found in a datamine awhile back. :3
@ikki5 Thats the most first world problem I've ever seen. Have fun missing out and Stay Fresh!
Why does it have to be ranked? -.- I mean I'm excited it's being released and I think this is a great game mode, but I wish we could choose to play it whenever we wanted!
Don't care for ranked battles!
Splatoon is the Wii U's greatest game. Better than Smash, better than Mario Kart 8 (and that's saying a lot), better than any current game on any console. Any Wii U owner who hasn't bought Splatoon is missing out BIG time. Anyone who hasn't bought a Wii U yet, it's worth the purchase just for this game. Splatoon is Game of the Year.
@aaronsullivan "cool down of a console"
Wii sold 100 million consoles (thats not some hubris exaggeration either, that's a big number which just looks ridiculously large in light of the Wii Us 10 million) so yeah the cool down period was kind of lame outside of the 3 Operation Rainfall games. I'm not sure it's possible to refer to the poor selling Wii U as having a cool down period as it's been ice cold it's entire existence. Cool down would be an uplifting experience for it.
And I'm sorry, I just can't come around to - "Wow, you played a whopping whole 5 minutes, come back tomorrow and you can play some more." I know that's not how it works exactly, but that's how it appears to work, I'm all about the appearance. And for 9 days no less. My kids adn I watched that vid frame by frame - there are 5 rows of 3 sections each, 4 items per section, for a total of 60 items, you get we think 12 to start, then 7 for a few days, then 3 day 8 and 9. It's so arbitrary it makes it even more stupid, the days don't even match up to the sections. That just makes it worse. 5 days, 5 rows, boom done. Still stupid, but at least it would kind of make sense. Why 9?
I'm sorry, the days are bad enough, throw in the randomness of the amounts laid out on a 5x4x3 board, there's only so much my brain can take.
@sinalefa - I really like Spaltoon, I've put over 100 hours into it, level 26, rank B+ 49. I complain about the little nit picky things because the overall game is so good. I'm constantly in the forum thread and only about 80% of my comments there are negative. Maybe only 75% even.
I always check when I boot it up to see which of my friends are online, played w/ Jax once or twice, played w/ Spoony_tech a few times, we played once I think, maybe? Guys, and girls are always talking squad battles in the forum, passwords and everything, but I haven't joined up yet. I'm not opposed to it, just hasn't happened yet.
@Zombo - "The text for it was found in a datamine awhile back. "
Is that the same datamine that found the playable octoling, b/c that hasn't happened yet?
I do thin it will happen eventually. A tsom epoint they'll run out of free new stuff adn just let us pick. I just hope it's sooner rather than later, 3 ranked modes in rotation is alot. Oh well, only 22 more hours and I'll know.
Thanks though, good to know somebody found it, gives me a little bit more hope.
@rjejr It probably came from the original datamining, and basically everything from that has been completed and released, except maybe one or two weapons and Rainmaker. The new recent datamining of the August 6 update only showed some new weapons, pictures for a future stage, and changes to the Octoling's model (at least as far I'm aware).
The playable Octolings actually when first found were just a hack by players using the Octoling models from the Single Player. That's why they originally lacked eyes and facial expressions; since in the Single Player they only showed them with their masks.
Actually, I've been saying for ages that they should just let us choose (I find the rotations to be unnecessary).
@ikki5 so when something is cheaper here but more expensive than everywhere else in the world do u wait til the price goes up to match the world before purchasing? Because there are plenty of things that cost different amounts all around the world
This game just keeps on giving!
@Aromaiden you find the rotations to be unnecessary because you don't have to keep the servers running with happy player matches. Once there is a choice the imbalance is going to be tremendous.
@aaronsullivan Yeah, that's true. I don't know, i just never really got their reasoning behind it, and I thought they were a bit too restrictive (at least the way things currently are).
