Runbow's crazy breed of colour-based running action has already enlisted the help of the likes of Shovel Knight, Scram Kitty, and CommanderVideo to help in the endless task of running from one place to another, and now that list of indie guests has just grown even larger.
In this exclusive trailer 13AM Games' frantic 9-player party game shows off nine brand new characters from all across the indie spectrum, namely Gunvolt from Azure Striker Gunvolt, Teslamancer from Teslagrad, Clone from Stealth Inc, ARID from The Fall, Xeodrifter from Xeodrifter, Princess from Chariot, Max from Mutant Mudds, Drifter from Hyper Light Drifter, and Unity Chan (Unity Japan's mascot character).
These new members complete the substantial roster to make Runbow feel like a virtual indie Super Smash Bros. in its scope of available characters. Have these new indie guests left you frothing at the mouth more than before? Let us know with a comment in the usual place!

Very interesting.
Pretty visuals. Also, yay for the Tesla dude
I think it's a cool concept but I'm sure it doesn't affect the gameplay so it's more of a visual appeal. I may get it but for the gameplay and I'm still on the fence about that.
It does help to make the characters a little more noticeable - Val and Hue (cue pun) look similar, so some other characters may help.
Still looking for a Day 1 purchase. Whenever this comes out.
@Spoony_Tech - It was pretty fun playing w/ my kids for 3 minutes before it froze my Wii U. I hate when that happens and haven't played since. I do think we'll pick up the complete game though.
@rjejr I wonder if the dev had to pay for any of those characters or they were all on loan as exposure for the other games that belong to?
I'm going nuts over this game.
Nice to see the list increasing. Loving the Chariot Princess.
This is one of my most hyped games of this year.
Cool to see the indie community getting together like this. The actual Runbow characters may as well be obsolete at this point.
So excited for this. I live in hope this, along with FAST, appear every week!
Oh and Steam World Heist!
@Spoony_Tech - I didn't see anybody in that trailer worth paying for so I hope they didn't. If you can get 8 or 9 characters for free and the 10th guy asks for money you could just say "no thanks".
off topic - you have any problem w/ Luna Blasters? That's the one weapon I can't counter. (Well if you count running away from that OP tidal wave roller and using seeker as a counter.) Buckets, gaitling guns, mops. aerosprays, I can work it out, luna blasters are 1 hit kills, high, low, side, everywhere, I'm defenseless and the .52 gal deca can't seem to reach them. I die before I can even kamikaze them, nothing works so far. Maybe I'm just hypnotized like one of those angler fish?
So no WayForward characters?
There is something thought provoking in the concept of 'Independent' studios IP being united when companies like Ubisoft, or Konami, or EA's franchises being so partitioned off from each other. Just like Smash Bros, it's a wonderful marketing tool to gain publicity for these characters.
I know I probably wouldn't of played Fire Emblem or Pikmin if it wasn't for Smash Bros, and I'm not even that much of a fan of Smash Bros.
@rjejr You know I never notice one particular weapon that seems to get me over and over. Its more the skilled user that will get me with whatever weapon that choose.
Game looks like a lot of fun. Reminds me kind of NSMB for Wii and WiiU with local multiplayer. I hope the game turns out to be as fun as it looks. And I like the original art style.
And as others have said, love how the Indy groups are working together. Gotta promote each others brands in the hopes that some of the people who own Nintendo systems buy some 3rd party games.
I'm rather looking forwards to this game, the guest characters are just delicious extras.
@Spoony_Tech Well I know how to beat those, exit lobby, re-enter lobby. But I know what you mean. Of course when everybody on the other team and my own has their name written in letters I don't understand sometimes thats hard to do. But w/ so many B and B- in ranked I can usually tell whos going to win by the weapons, the more balanced the better, so I've started paying attention to weapons more of late.
Game looks like fun. I wish I would have been around for the E3 demo deal......at this point I feel Nintendo should give them a little love......maybe the guy from pushmo and dillards rolling western just as a fun cameo.
Nice to see Arid from The Fall in there.
I'm just happy that Juan is in, haha. Guacameele is one of my favorite indies.
@Goginho yeah, really happy to see him, cant wait for the sequel to that game.
Just read that Runbow will have online as well, these 2 things have pushed me into buying.
Wow, Gunvolt!
@rjejr - I think a lot of it is play style. I don't have issues with any weapons......except chargers. At this point if the team I'm playing has 2 or more chargers I might as well quit. Either I get splatted 10 times or i hide so much I become a useless teammate.
@Discipledoctor Guacamelee! Is my favorite indie game as well, but I am just by next year with this, FAST, Typoman, Extreme Excorcism, etc. that's bound to change.
Awesome! Great character roster, stellar visuals. It was quite good in Nindies at home. The only thing I'm concerned about is whether I'll be able to get enough out of it, seeing as I don't play with other people a lot.
Wow, this practically is an indie Smash Bros. Pretty outstanding cast of characters. Too bad the game is really boring for me. I played the demo for that Nindies promo and it was really…slow and unrewarding. Maybe it's more fun with friends, but I don't have too many people to play with, and when I do, it would be hard to convince them to try this over Smash Bros or Mario Kart 8. Hope it does well for the developers though! A straight up fighting game sequel with this cast would be a dream come true.
@Retro_on_theGo
I too thought the game was pretty "meh" until I played it with someone else. We ended up having a blast! The game went from a definite pass to a chance at a Day 1 purchase, but definite buy if a sale comes up. If you can find at least one other competitive person to play with, it becomes a whole different game, where you're constantly running, jumping and beating the crap out of each other to try to get to the goal first. It was almost as fun and just as frantic as Smash, and that's a great feeling from an Indie game.
Also, does anyone else feel like that song in the video was obviously lifted from the Ren & Stimpy intro? You can't tell me it's not.
@Spoony_Tech
I recall the interview article with 13AM Games, and I think they said it was all voluntary (for the guest characters). They were talking about a sense of community amd comradery among the eShop indie devs (or Ninties as they're being referred to now).
I think it's great. This is a requisite purchase for me- the color shifting, time trial platforming is right up my alley.
I admit the cast is great, even super ultra awesome, but more than hype me it makes me wish such cast was in another game ^_^;
Nothing against Runbow itself, but having so many unique characters in a game where every character play the same is almost illegal! I don't pretend a indie smash bros, but I would love to see such cast in a game where every character can at least show off one of their unique abilities.
Anyway this is a start, hopefully we will keep seeing this indie-crossover approch going on and taking more risks
The trailer is a lot of fun to watch! I didn't expect the game to sell me purely because of the multiplayer, but as soon as I can convince a few friends, we'll get this together! Hopefully the netcode is good - nothing hurts more than a lag-assisted kill.
Also, hooray for Unity-chan!
They should ask if they can have Popo or Nana in the game as character. That game looks beautiful.
I AM interested to know when the other Nindies are gonna be released though! They all look like they're completed!
Interesting. It looks alright, but I'm not sold. Especially if this is only at its fun peak, w/ other ppl.
@Captain_Gonru I can't imagine any reason to buy this for the single player, there are probably a million free app or web browser games that do almost the same thing.
@Gerbwmu Killing the chargers becomes my main focus if I feel like my team is going to be at a disadvantage b/c we don't have 1. If we have a sniper then it's their job to neutralize the other sniper. Splatoon really dos have me thinking, as does the weird ranking. One match it's B-, C+, C+, C+ vs B,B,B,B+, the nest match it's B-,B,B,B+ vs B+,A+, B,B, so my play style changes from being the main guy to being support. I mostly play tower control, the rest pretty much bores me now.
@Kaze_Memaryu Back then I played the Nindies@home demo alone and it was lots of fun even in singleplayer!
But then just last week I realized the demo ist still playable, so I competed against to friends in local multiplayer. It was awesome! But killing isn't really important, it just slows you down when you try to hit someone. The best strategy is clearly being faster than everyone.
Nice, like Wii U's indie smash bros.
This is a must buy for multiplayer peeps.
@shani I got the demo as well, but I wasn't having fun playing alone at all. The demo stages were obviously meant for multiplayer, since they're comparably large, but uneventful overall, and I felt like something was missing while I was playing (the thought of looking to the left and right of the couch with that thought makes the situation kinda melancholic, but eh). Most of my friends who have a WiiU didn't dowload it at all, and they weren't even interested in trying it, but after showing them this trailer, they got curious.
@Kaze_Memaryu Absolutely, playing against with my friends was definitely more fun, but I was kind of surprised that it also wasn't boring playing alone (and get accustomed to the game's mechanics). Still, this clearly is a multiplayer game for sure.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see that the Runbow demo offers six levels! That's more than a demo usually would offer, one could have fun with that alone for a while.
But of course I can't wait for the full game, then I'll invite as many friends as possible to play it against each other in local multiplayer. I'm also eager to try out the other modes like colour master.
