Shovel Knight is easily one of the best Indie games to come to the eShop. Created as a love letter to fans of the 8-bit era of gaming, the action platformer has been met by nearly universal critical acclaim and it's sold almost a quarter of a million copies. Not ones to let their surprising success fade, the folks over at Yacht Club Games have decided to keep the ball rolling and to release a boxed copy of the game on all platforms Shovel Knight has released on thus far.
The physical release will be available for $19.99 and will release on 13th October in North America and 16th October in Europe for both Wii U and 3DS. The first expansion, called Plague of Shadows and starring the spooky Plague Knight, will also come included in the package. Existing owners of the digital copy need not worry though, Plague of Shadows will be releasing for free before the physical release launches. Fans can expect a firm release date on Plague of Shadows later this month, along with a "MEGATON announcement" for some exclusive content for the versions on Nintendo platforms.

Wii U is saved!
I really hope people aren't going to be back on here complaining about SK not being an exclusive anymore. Wii U had it first, take the win when you can get it.
Didn't we get this news already?
Still a great game though. Looking forward for the DLC!
I see a Legend of Zelda miniboss for us. Guess we'll wait and see.
uuuurrrgh... If given the choice, I only want physical versions of games, but I already got this game from the eShop. Now I have to get the disc. Buying it twice, I guess!
Mighty No 9 seems like it will have this same problem.
I'm so happy Bloodstained is confirmed physical from the beginning.
Soon...the dlc will be MINE.
I won't be buying it in a hurry, but it's nice to know when 3DS is 'retro', and the eShop is no more, (and god forbid something happens to my New 3DS) I can pick this up if need be.
YOU COULD HAVE SAID THIS BEFORE I BOUGHT THE GAME AND LEGITIMATELY ENJOYED IT TO BITS, YOU MONSTERS. I'll grab the physical 3DS game, along with Mighty No 9.
I have it on 3ds digitally so I'll grab the Physical copy on Wii U.
Left physical media years ago. But there's plenty of folks who keep shelf space for media
Awesome news. I hope they release this on Retro VGS also.
So the rumors were true all along..And they denied it all the way. In true Nintendo fashion..
And now there's zero excuse. BUY THIS GAME. ;P
I only buy physical copies of games so I'm happy to hear this. I'll probably have to pick it up.
Yes! I had heard rumors of a physical release. Glad they were true. $20 is a really nice price for a physical copy too. It's only $5 more.
Cool, I was waiting to rebuy after wiping my old account. This version will do nicely.
Ah, crap. I always prefer the physical version to an EShop copy, but I already bought this game a year ago.
Seeing as I just purchased a new 3DS I think this will be a nice extra present for myself.
Nice! I was interested, but I don't like buying digital, so now I have no excuse. Another game for me in October! Now I have to decide if I'll get it for 3DS or for Wii U. Those that already have the game, what do you recommend?
This might push me to finally get the game.
Yeah think I might jump on board with a physical version.
Thinking about all the physical versions of this and the other major Kickstarters, Yooka, Bloodstained and MN 9.
"Fans can expect a firm release date on Plague of Shadows later this month"
So, like... in a few hours? 'Cause there's only so much later this month can get before we hit the next one.
I'm taking their use of MEGATON in a couple of possible ways:
1. Google tells me Nintendo were known for their use of "megaton" announcements in the past. Which tbh seems the most likely reference here.
2. Volvagia was the boss of the Fire Temple, home of the Megaton Hammer. Dragons fit the Shovel Knight theme, and so would a potential "Hammer Knight". Scraping the barrel, but ideas are fun.
I actually pitched an idea recently to them and the guys were awesome enough to give a real, positive response to it. I wonder... >;D
In fairness it should be something like the God of War level on Sony and Battletoads on (ugh) Microsoft console versions. With that in mind, the more obscure, the better--crossing a third party character with Mario or Zelda is a boring cliche at this point.
This is going to seem weird, but I think I'll get this since it will be my first experience with Shovel Knight.
Nice to see the Wii U version will be getting a retail release as well.
I'll just take the dlc please and thank you.
Considering getting the Xbox version for Battletoads but I will wait and see what the Megaton Nintendo announcement is.
Maybe...

... mmm, Zelda/Darunia/Volvagia related sounds more likely.
Whats that about the Challenge mode ? Will it be part of the DLC pack or is it exclusive to the retail version ?
hmmmm.....HMMMMMMMMMHMMM.......MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
Dear publishers,
Is it that difficult to release these games day 1 as retail and digital formats?? Please let us decide for ourselves! I would've never DL shovel knowing a boxed version was coming!! First duck tales then Wolfenstein old Blood and others and now this!! Cmon people!! Don't be greedy!!
@Artwark best buy leaked 3ds physical copy, but then the Devs came out and said they had "no plans" for retail.
they also had box art for the retail copy.
@joey302 It actually is. Though Yacht Club Games is now a publisher, most Indie games release digitally because it's much cheaper. Manufacturing and printing off physical copies of a game that might or might not sell is a costly and risky move, so most developers just put it up on digital storefronts. Then, if the game does well enough, it gets a print run, like Shovel Knight.
So glad that I held off on buying this game digitally. Definitely looking forward to that boxed Wii U version with a flashy instruction booklet.
For $20, with a thick and (and hopefully!) glossy manual!!??!?!?!??!?? I must haz the 3DS one! (2nd time is the charm right?!?!??!?!)
Why would you ever make a retail version of a game like Shovel Knight? It's a waste of money, most people already bought Shovel Knight digitally because it was the only thing they could do. Now you're going to listen to people demand and make it about a year after Shovel Knight came out? This is going to flop horribly in retailers.
I'm SOLD!!!
No Vita version. 3Ds handheld exclusive retail Even though I bought it for both Wii U and 3DS I am tempted to buy it again. Love the Nintendo exclusive news announcement.
If there was a way to transfer digital save to retail then yes, I would. But it's Nintendo and their obnoxious save policies we're talking about...
okay, i wouldn't mind Phoenix wright dual destinies in retail at 39.99 at all.
But this game at 19.99 and this graphic???
I already got this on my Wii U for $10, so if I do get a physical copy it will have to be the 3DS one since I don't have it for 3DS yet.
I would be all over this if you could buy one copy physically and it included a code to download a copy for the other console.
I already have SK for Wii U, but for $20 I was hoping for a bit more incentive. I'll probably get it after the price drops used for 3DS since the memory space limitations (and concerns for servers in 10-20 years) are the main reason I refuse to buy digital exclusively.
For $20, HECK YEAH I'll buy a physical cart.
Looking forward to put my hands on 3DS version.
@Chaoz I would rather have two copies of the same game (one being physical) than trusting in the horrible account system Nintendo offers. A broken unit is enough to lose every single download, and saves will be gone forever.
Worst scenario: your cartridge is lost or stolen. You had a powersaves backup. Get another copy, inject the save back to the cartridge, done. Digital saves are impossible to repair on a different system even if you have backups. They have a stupid algorythm tied to console ID. If they don't match, you can't use the save.
Also, sharing a game with other family members and reselling it later are enough reasons to get retail over digital, specially in 3DS case, or both if you already had the digital one, just for safety purposes...
Future buyers should avoid the digital copy if there's a physical available, but I guess that's just me. This game is multi platform and actually most people already got their copy from Steam.
@Captain_Gonru - FYI for the avatar change, I think you requested notice.
I still haven't bought this yet. Hmmm, I'm pro-digital but I'll pick this up retail since I don't have enough of those anyway.
Nice. I've already got the digital one so I won't get this, but it great for anyone who doesn't have this yet.
@Chaoz Judging by comments around the internet, I would say many are willing to double or even triple dip for this game.
I myself have not yet bought this game and am considering buying it for the Wii U and 3DS. As long as the price for the UK isn't something ridiculous.
Give me a decent deal and i will buy it, no need for wrapping papers,...
All I can say is, if you don't have this game, BUY IT!! Doesn't make a lot of sence that they are going for a retail version, but it might make more people aware of the game (and it seems lots of people on here who already bought the game would like a retail version as well).
Seeing they did Battletoads for Xbone, maybe they'll do something like Ice Climbers for Nintendo :/
I haven't bought Shovel Knight yet.. That's a good thing, now I can get the physical version. Didn't expect this, but I usually hold off digital games in case a physical copy gets released.
I think it's a Wii U purchase for me. I already have it on 3DS, but I've always pefered physical to download.
@icebear80 I thought Nintendo weren't going to be getting any exclusive content? Maybe I am wrong but thats what I read somewhere but can't remember where.
Yes this is the moment I had been waiting for even though I got it digitally.
I don't understand what's so amazing about this game. I thought it was just 'okay'.
Definitely buying it, as a supporter of physical versions.
I already own this game on the Wii-U and loved every minute of it. The only reason I would buy it again on Wii-U in physical form is as a collectors item for myself hehe
Physical copies <3
Oh, actually, I may buy it tehn. I'm reluctant to spend anything more than 10 euro for an eShop game, even if it's really good (and Shovel Knight isn't such a total must have to me). But if I can pick up the physical copy for less than 20 euro, that's fine.
@Nintendo_Ninja Uh, what's weird about wanting to try out a new interesting game you don't already own?
I noticed the other day that Stick it to the man had a physical release on the PS4. Although I have no problems with Ninty's eshop (it's quite sturdy in fact), I wonder if Sony's slow PS online store is the reason so many kickstarters are getting physical releases? It may have been a false dawn about the move to all digital.
If I didn't already own this game I would certainly be picking this up seeing as Shovel Knight is simply one of the best E-Shop games on the system. Amazing soundtrack, retro visuals with a modern twist, and tight controls make this a game that can't be missed in my opinion.
I have this on the Wii U and have wanted to get the 3DS version as well, but never could bring myself to spend $15 on a game I already have when there are so many other games out there. The fact that I can get a physical copy for 3DS now, though...man...I'm gonna have to do it.
I'll get a copy now to decide if I want this on the portable or console
Well darn it all! Had I known about the physical release I would have waited And bought that instead. I will probably get the physical release if it comes out on 3DS. But Im a little miffed at having 2 copies of the game. Congrats on the huge sales! It is a great game. I'm glad to see that it did so well. I will pre-buy this baby for 3DS sometime this week.
Always really happy to see download titles make it to retail!
Best of luck to them in the endeavor!
@Captain_Gonru - Birthmonth. I'm old and senile, can't remember the day, think it starts w/ a 2.
Maybe I'll buy physical on 3DS, since I already have it on Wii U? Although I'm glad I played and beat it from its initial release, I kinda wish I'd have known that it would come out like this, since I always prefer a physical version.
MEGATON announcement??
Very cool! I was going to buy this for Vita but I'll hold on and get the WiiU retail version!
Yes I'll be getting it for sure!
There is 1% (max 10%) developers who really care.
I suggest piss on the rest.
If we dont do it......dont have any complains why video game industry looks like now.
To late. I already have the download.
