While it probably wasn't an announcement to prompt huge buzz in the E3 audience, Nintendo scored a commercial coup with the arrival of big N-themed Skylanders SuperChargers Starter Packs, featuring exclusive Bowser and Donkey Kong figures that also function as amiibo.
Just yesterday we posted a gallery of the press assets for these amiibo, but below our colleague Andy Robertson of Family Gamer TV takes a closer behind-the-scenes look. He sees more of the figures and their vehicles in action, and it all looks rather charming.
Check it out below.

I'll forever remember this as the game that marked the beginning of the downward spiral into the epic disaster that was the Digital Event.
Wow, looks pretty awesome actually. Haven't really payed much attention to Skylanders before.
If you don't like that you don't like fun videogames. Flying Koopa and Diddy too.
And it's some of the best graphics on Wii U at E3.
This or ACaT should not be a tough choice for anyone.
Why the need for a dongle on Wii-U? Shouldn't Skylanders and DI simply use the Gamepad's NFC port?
@StarDust4Ever - I don't think that would even begin to be remotely possible. The portal knows when you put toys both on and off so you can swap characters in and out at any time, and 2 people can play at once. While I suppose it may be possible for the Gamepad to just read a new one when you tap it to take out the old 1 I'm not sure how it could handle 2 players at once. Plus you risk losing all your coins that way. My kids lost about 20 levels on their amiibo in SSB b/c they forgot to put the amiibo back on when they turned off the console to rush up for dinner 1 day.
The amiibo are pretty much read to simply be acknowledged by a game when you tap them on the portal, they are not very good at 2 way communication. Just ask the people who lost their SSB info when they played Mario Party 10. (Though there were probably very few of those, there were some.)
@Captain_Gonru - But AC is free. Still not DLing it are you.
You know, as much time as I've spent on this E3 I'm still not even sure I know why AC is free or if that's just a rumour. Free might have been a good thing to mention in the ND so people good shrug it off as "one of those Pokemon things". . And does it work w/ all the amiibo or just AC? If they've built a very simplistic board game that only works w/ 4 amiibo DK and Bowser must be very excited to go play in a real game w/ over 200 characters. When people go to switch them back into amiibo mode they'll be screaming out "No, not amiibo mode, NOOOOOOOOOOO!!"
@rjejr "kids lost 20 levels in SSB..." user error doesn't count. I've never had issues saving to Amiibo in Smash Bros, even while drunk.
If I place a Skylander or DI or even my credit card to the Game Pad, I get a response stating "the object you placed on the game pad is not an Amiibo..." The fact the Gamepad recognises the presence of a non-Amiibo NFC object tells me it is plausible the Gamepad could read data from other objects. The Japanese eShop even lets people use NFC credit card payment. Also as far as I've heard, no real data is saved to the Skylander or DI figures. So I assume the gamepad could technically read data from them with the proper low level drivers or software.
@Captain_Gonru - Everybody covered it being free except NL, but it seems like the news first broke on Twitter by some guy named Josh and his twitter feed the bit block and every other report is based on his say so.
My guess is free in the rest of the world and $60 in the US, cause, you know, Reggie.

It's also possible it's a paid game in the box w/ 1 or 2 amibo at a reasonable price and free to download. That way the people who buy all the amibo off of eBay can play it w/o having to buy the game disc. (FYI Disney Infinity 1.0 is free to DL on Wii U. I did, then I spent over $100 on a portal and figures to play it. Same thing here me thinks.)
Looks pretty decent. I may actually buy a Skylanders game for once. xD
@StarDust4Ever - "Also as far as I've heard, no real data is saved to the Skylander or DI figures"
ALL the data is saved to the Skylanders toys. It's nto Skyaldners w/o the data being saved. How could they possibly work not only across games but across consoles - PS, Xbox, Wii - if no data was saved to them? None of the previous Skylanders games even had an online component where you could say the data was saved in the cloud. That makes no sense.
And while my kids will admit they messed up so it is user error, they also know it's more complicated then it needs to be for the system to work as they've never lost any data w/ their SKylanders or Disney INfinity toys. Sometimes user error is caused by things bein gmore complicated then they need to be.
It's also user error for anybody who deleted their amiibo SSB data while playing Mario Party 10, but who can blame them, it's a stupid design.
@Captain_Gonru placeholder pricing TBH.
Amazon has 2 listings I think though, 1 for game and 1 for game with 2 amiibo and 3 cards.
I'd like to assume the 3 cards are chars that could be used in the game as if you had the figure of them.
@Captain_Gonru -You know, for a guy who doesn't want to buy this game you sure do know a lot about it. (Probably more than Reggie honeslty)
Completely agree - Nintendo has not done a very good job at presenting info on this game. If only there was some type of gaming convention where companies could good and show off their new games and tell people all about them.
Just wait till they make Pokemon Amiibo trading cards with all 900+ characters...
@StarDust4Ever Do you even pokemon? theres only 721 atm.
No. Pokemon came out when I was in high school. I got a Game Boy Color my Senior year and loathed the fact that the shelves at Walmart were half full of Pokemon titles...
@Captain_Gonru wasn't some box art released some where?
so even if there is a free DL version, there's also a retail paid for version.
