Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed to IGN that Nintendo is currently experimenting with the idea of a transformable Awring amiibo which could have some connectivity with the forthcoming Star Fox Zero.
The legendary designer was pushed for details by the site, and explained that although Nintendo has its hands full keeping up with the intense demand, it continues to tinker with various new concepts - including an Arwing which morphs into a walker:
I'm sure you're aware of the amiibo shortage situation, even with the back orders and repeat orders. We kind of have our hands full. Earlier, we talked about how the 3D model of the Arwing will actually transform [into a two-legged Walker] in the game. We have an actual model and we're thinking how much it would actually cost to make when it's transformable. Can we actually do that? We're thinking about a lot of different things right now.
We've already seen Skylanders Superchargers offering figures which can be switched between amiibo and Skylander modes - perhaps a transformable amiibo could be the next step?

Yes please so I can go to jail for punching out some kid and taking theirs...because these are going to be sooooo easy to find. /s sorta
Why don't you make some games first Nintendo then make Amiibo.
Looks like they are just interested in squeezing every penny they can out of the hardcore now while they sail along to the next console/s.
I feel burnt tbh.
Here's an idea, Nintendo: before you keep cranking out new Amiibo, how about you fill current Amiibo demands.
I'd buy it. Please do it.
Yeah, no kidding. They make amiibo out of literally everything.
It's like putting the cart before the horse.
Can we fix the current situation before we add more, PLEASE!?
Yet another Amiibo that will be virtually impossible to get... Damnit!
Whatever they cost to make, just sell them for more, eBay doesnt have a price ceiling.
There's no law that says you have to buy all of them...
But there's always importing from Australian websites.
As if Miyamoto personally oversees amiibo production & distribution. Wise up guys, he's busy with the next.big.thing - that's his job and his nature.
I think it's cool. It could be a more premium Amiibo, and definitely what Nintendo should do. They need to get around the shortage situation, but new Amiibo development should continue.
I think before Nintendo should make ANY more waves, they need to ensure that stock shortages in the current waves are taken care of and to ensure that they won't happen again. They keep tossing out more new amiibo which do nothing to fix current stock issues and only create more. If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing you do to get yourself out of it is stop digging, yet Nintendo hasn't even taken this step.
@MitchVogel good analogy. Upon realizing they were stuck in a hole, Nintendo decided to just start digging faster and faster, hoping at some point the hole would, like... Cease to be a hole? I don't understand Nintendo's logic right now, they literally are just exacerbating the problem.
@ShadJV Which is why I think this is all intentional. With each passing month of it being the same story, I refus to believe that this is a problem beyond Nintendo's control.
I know that these figures are difficult to make and all, but let's not forget they launched this whole initiative in NOVEMBER. At this point, over six months after launch, they definitely know where demand is and what it takes to manufacture these.
This just leaves us with the question: why are they bottlenecking supply like this?
Woah, slow down Nintendo. Let's sort out the current amiibo shortages and increase the number of ways to use each amiibo before flooding us with more.
Sounds rad to me.
And you guys still don't get that these are gonna be limited edition collectibles? Gimme a break; I'm well aware that I will have to sit outside a store hours before they open in order to ensure that I'll get this.
Hey, that's great. Not likely to see it on store shelves though.
And then it sells out (for preorder) in 5 minutes?
