Where's your suit, Samus?

Will we see a new Metroid game at this year's E3? Fans will certainly hope so, but in the meantime we can all get excited about a fan-made prequel which uses the original NES hardware for that extra degree of authenticity.

Metroid: Rogue Dawn takes the original title and hacks it apart, building an entirely new game from the ground up which features fresh visuals and takes inspiration from later entries in the franchise. It even uses the MMC3 mapper to offer some additional power.

You can check out the progress made by watching the videos below. The developer is aiming for a Summer release, although there's a danger that Nintendo could step in and blitz the project before then. Hopefully that won't be the case, as this is shaping up to be a very interesting - albeit unofficial - take on one of gaming's most beloved series.
