Will we see a new Metroid game at this year's E3? Fans will certainly hope so, but in the meantime we can all get excited about a fan-made prequel which uses the original NES hardware for that extra degree of authenticity.
Metroid: Rogue Dawn takes the original title and hacks it apart, building an entirely new game from the ground up which features fresh visuals and takes inspiration from later entries in the franchise. It even uses the MMC3 mapper to offer some additional power.
You can check out the progress made by watching the videos below. The developer is aiming for a Summer release, although there's a danger that Nintendo could step in and blitz the project before then. Hopefully that won't be the case, as this is shaping up to be a very interesting - albeit unofficial - take on one of gaming's most beloved series.

Awesome, Will defo check this out
Nintendo will destroy it by the end of the day. When will you learn that THEY are watching?
Publishers should check out projects like these. If they prove to be impressive and good quality, they could partner up and release the game and give a kickback to the developer. Probably never happen, of course. But man, think of all the translations that could be released and I'm sure that there would be those willing to help convert over VC games that the original publishers do not want to bother with.
I hope Nintendo doesn't kill this. SOMEBODY needs to give us new Metroid games (I kinda like the series, in case you couldn't tell from my avatar)
Well, anyone can make a game for their own amusement, no matter the content. Nintendo can't stop that. However, promoting, sharing, and allowing people to download it, that's another story,
@cbkummer What is that thing in your Avatar? It reminds me of that weird enemy from Kid Icarus.
Given that Hyper Metriod just came out a few weeks ago, and hasn't had any trouble with Nintendo I'd be surprised if they killed this romhack. Still, you can never really know what Nintendo doesn't like people doing. Either way it's been good to see quiet a few good Metriod hacks pop up recently.
Pretty impressive hacking work, will keep taps on it's progress.
I would love Nintendo getting the rights to NES Guardian Legend. Do a graphic overhaul and expand it. Also turn the ship into the one Samus uses and have the Guardian Legend be actually Samus mother. Remember she turned into the ship. This should be Metroid prequel.
seems like the kind of thing nintendo would leave alone unless they try to make money from it. see also: mother 4, super smash land and probably a million others
Nintendo will probably not able to take this down, if anything it'll just be a fan made homebrew game just like Super Mario World: Return to Dinosaur Land and the Super Metroid homebrew game. Let's see how it'll do.
Argh, stupid GEMA won't let me see it!!
@RantingThespian That's a metroid
Stuoid developers ned to stop riding the suvcess train of other peoples work amd do their own dang thing.
Meh their has been tons of edits and hacks for the NES game and so forth. I think this is really an hack of "Aliens 3" ( if you haven't really noticed or think about it ) becuase of the size of the sprites and various actions ( which is presented in Alien 3 ).
Also the idea of having an story to follows the Re-written storyline is dumb. Samus was raised by the Chrozo people and the planet Zebbes was originally populated by dragons until the Space-Pirates killed them all off. Not that her parents were killed by Ridely BS. ( you find that in the original Metroid Manual or Comics ). That whole parent killed is garbage.
The whole entire Metriod has been dumbed down since Metriod Prime 3 or at least the Konami Metroid game. Samus is an rouge not an officer. I do not want to play or call Samus an officer ( it would be nice and all but we should leave that in the background ).
@Cauterize would you unblock me
Would it hurt to make it a bit more colourful?? the video just looks dark and ugly!
@RantingThespian there is an enemy in kid icarus called the komayto which REALLY looks like a metroid
looks bad
@MegaBeedrill Well, someone dint get the joke
@vitalemrecords Great comment ! Any other wise words from you sensei ?
Also, why do tehse fangames always have to have such clishe titles ? "Rogue Dawn" just sounds meh.
Could have gone with revenge of the reckonning origin begins
Lets just hope that Ninty doesnt crush this project emmediatly.
As much hate as i have for Capcom these days, their policy for fanmade content is top notch. Pretty much everything goes as long as you dont try to sell it.
And Fans took that liberty to create MegaMan games that overshadow even Capcoms originals
I drooled all over the place. I am beyond excited for this and I really hope something comes out of it. It's a real shame that Nintendo threatens the making of these. I get that a "prequel" can change the course of their IP but the fans want a damn metroid game — myself included.
WILL be watching this and crossing every body part I can that it sees the light of day.
@RantingThespian generally rom hacks like this are safe because they aren't distributed with the originally code and are distributed as a patch
A hack of Super Metroid that triples its size, a remake of Metroid 2 that adds loads of new features and uses Zero Mission's assets, and now THIS?
Guys, please, you'll kill me.
This guy's such a fan he doesn't know Samus has had her power suit since she was a teen.
Unless this is supposed to be pre-teen Samus.
Samus did not have her suit since whatever age group. The "Suit" is really the exoskeleton of the Chrozo-people.
Wow, nintendolife covering up some ROM Hacks?
Now thats a first
@Zach777 They wont. They are multiple rom hacks/mods that do something big as these and they all get released
Hopefully AM2R will be finished by the time Metroid Wii U/3DS rolls around
That looks fun! I need my dose of Metroid. Can't wait 'till that's done!
California Dreamin'? Really? That's the music they chose?
What's with the unfitting music in the videos?
Anyways, it looks interesting enough, and nearly anything Metroid-related gets me giddy. But could they of made the game look less... drab? The original Metroid was fairly colorful. Samus is just shades of blue here, while in the original she had separate hair, skin, and outfit colors.
But yeah, still not giving up hope for a Metroid announcement at E3!
@MegaBeedrill
@PurpleSquirrel64
I know it's a Metroid. It was a joke. I also know they are called Komaytos in Kid Icarus (with even a tounge-in-cheek reference in Uprising), it was part of the joke. I've been battling the damn things since I got a Game Boy and Metroid II for christmas when I was a kid
...sigh, I think I'll just go back to posting Doctor Who gifs
I know I'm spoiled but if if it doesn't feature a map, I'm not going to bother with it. I wish they would re-vamp Metroid II with a map system so I can finally comfortably play all of the official games.
I can imagine where this goes:
Fanboy/girl is pissed about Nintendo and Other M, because this is not HER Samus and the gameplay was waaaaay too easy for him/her. So (s)he makes her/his own game, to prove the world that (s)he can do better games than someone company, that lives from making games. Alright, let's check the check list:
1. No map, because only a noob uses the map. HARDCORE gamer can navigate by their instincts.
2. The story... pardon me? Stories only drag the game, so more shooting and killing, after all, Samus is a BADASS bounty hunter!
3. Huge bosses, that can kill you with one hit, that said, if you can manage it to get to them because the levels are so damn HARD since REAL GAMER can play those kaizo levels with a blindfold. Forget those easy games because we're HARDCORE.
Yeaaaah... I won't play this, that's for sure.
But hey, those are my two coins. Do whatever you like =)
I've never heard of Nintendo CADing a ROM hack before, I don't know why they'd start with this one.
Square, on the other hand...
Another ambitious Nintendo IP-based fan game project to look forward to this summer alongside Mother 4.
I have no idea why Nintendo does not use these fan projects as examples of demand for new entries for dormant IPs. The demand is obviously there but they would rather suppress it.
@FeedingTheWheel The day games like this gets canon, I will quit gaming. That is a promise!
@Zach777 Duh. This has the Metroid name to it. They will shut this down just for using the name. The creator should know this.
I'm the designer of Rogue Dawn and would first and foremost like to thank the author of this article for your kind words and much appreciated attention you've placed on our project. I have the honor of working with some tremendously talented individuals with this project.
I'd like to share a few things about this game hack:
We started with the original Metroid as a foundation and began expanding on it in all aspects. Graphics, level design, music, player abilities and items. We are constrained by the original hardware limitations but we have found the limitations to be a worthy challenge. The level design is based on exploration, ramped difficulty with an emphasis on fun factor. The game isn't a challenge hack, no impossible jumps or enemies that kill in one or two hits. The boss difficulty remains relatively the same. The final area was designed to be a greater challenge than the original metroid simply because the final area was rather lacking, it is reasonable though. My aim with the level design is to produce a fun, enjoyable experience.
(I ran out of space)
New features In this unofficial prequel:
-More areas than the original, a larger world to explore.
-Graphics that push the limits of the NES system.
-A new storyline (You play as a villain, Dawn Aran, raised by Ridley in his culture of hate)
Dawn Aran is Samus Arans sister, separated at a young age. Samus's obsession with
annihilating the Metroids is due to her own blood unleashing the greatest threat on
civilization. This takes place before Samus becomes a bounty hunter, pre-Metroid 1.
-New player abilities such as morph in air, spring ball, wall jump, wavy ice beam and more...
-A map system to help navigate the planet sr388.
-Save game feature for those who wish to play on original hardware or without save states.
-Slope detection!!! A recent breakthrough by Snarfblam, our coding team member.
-New music.
-New scrolling work around that eliminates bubble doors in some areas and expands exploration and level design capabilities.
-Health chargers near area start locations to help avoid grinding for health.
-Hurt blocks, allowing for stationary obstacles and enemies.
And more.....
Our goal is to create and enjoyable, memorable, and exciting player experience. Our current release goal is summer 2015. Rogue Dawn will be available for free as an .IPS patch.
If anyone would like to give feedback, ask questions, or share ideas please feel free to contact us at the Rom Hacking (dot) net forum and post on our thread in the "personal project" section. Thank you all for you interest, I hope you all thoroughly enjoy this game once it is released!
@Grimlock Its too bad Nintendo most likelt is gonna shut this down cause they are EXTREMELY overprotective of their IPs, should have gave it a non Metroid Title, you could have called it "Ridleys Revenge" or "Project Aran" and left out the full names of in game characters and areas. Hope it makes it tho.
