The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is not only an all-time classic game, but the source of one of the most keenly fought speedrun world records. Speedrunning experts continue to set new standards, each seemingly defying the odds more than before.
Well, the record has been beaten again, once again utilising quirky skips that can be accessed through performing tricky moves early in the game. This time around the record holder is skater82297, who's cleared the game in 17 minutes and 47 seconds. The 17 year old plays the Japanese version as the subtitles scroll faster; that's the level of detail that these speedrunners follow.
You can see the run below. Please be warned that there's some bad language in the video.
With thanks to NintenBo for the heads up.

Cool!
Comments discrediting the run for using glitches incoming.
And adding to why he's using the Japanese VC, it's because the glitch that he uses to get the bottle relies on an emulation bug. The chinese iQue does have faster text and less lag, but that glitch crashes the game.
@Yiffy Why even poke the bee hive. Sigh.
Comment discrediting the run for using glitches.
I always find it amazing how much effort is put into these runs. It's always impressive, but I have to wonder why. But everybody has their own hobbies.
I think they should start to call these runs glitch runs instead of speed runs I mean it's interesting to see how and where they find the glitches but finishing a game like that is totally different then running a full game in a most effecient and quick manner as possible according to the rules of the developers of the game.
His pure joy in the last 12 minutes of that video is pretty sweet. I don't even remember the last time I was that happy! Good for him.
@khululy
I agree!
@khululy They have different categories for different means of beating the game. The two I know if for Ocarina of Time is any% (the one in this article) and MST, which requires that you play through every dungeon in the game without skipping any major story.
@khululy @NintenBo Indeed, nearly all games have an "any%" and a "100%" category, any% means get to the credits as fast as possible through any means possible, 100% usually means you need to collect everything in the game.
Is it possible to getting about same time on any PAL/NTSC versions?
It's pretty cool he was able to shave that much time off the record.
@Yiffy Thanks for clarifying that, I was about to ask myself
Impressive run; I did not think the record was going to improve unless TAS was involved.
Let me know when someone beats it in record time by playing it the way the developers intended people to play it instead of resorting to glitches and cheats.
@sgrams04 Amen.
I'm sorry but his reaction.... wow
Virtual Console does not count.
It is obvious going through the game with the Japanese version will be faster since all Eastern languages are really fast in speech unlike descriptive western languages. I mean that is an challenge for THE JAPANESE VERSION but is not equal to the west at all.
Glitches...but seriously glitches do not count at all. I mean yeah tilt the machine and avoid loading or use glitches to get by and bypass this and that is okay for the console version alone.
But we are talking about
No Glitch
No
He is seventeen and is using VConsole. I could take out his record if I wanted to. I just knows it. No Virtual Console I guarantee.
Of course me cheating and using glitches is another thing completely.
@RegalSin Then beat his record and get your own? I mean, it's pretty much the standard for these runs to use glitches and exploits. Or go for the WR legit, i'm sure they keep track of that too.
@RegalSin
OoT Glitchless WR is 3:44:24. The top 6 times are all on JP VC.
OoT Glitchless 100% WR is 5:57:38. None of the times submitted are on N64.
EDIT: Here is the site to go to if you want to start speedrunning OoT: https://www.zeldaspeedruns.com/oot/
@RegalSin
Please post a video of yourself successfully performing a warp from Gohma's room to Ganon's castle. If you can beat his record, I would love to see you back up your talk with some proof.
Absolutely no idea what I just saw.

Here you go. This is the Zelda speed leaderboards for the Glitchless category. The world record is three hours and 44 minutes, set last month.
@CaviarMeths I agree. His reaction is great. Pure emotion.
I seriously don't get what the heck is people's problem that people are speedrunning a game with glitches? Does it affect you literally at all? No. Are there glitchless and 100% speedruns still out there? Of course there are you dummies. Glitches can take a LOT of skill and super fast fingers to perform exactly right and when people win the world record on things like this there's a reason why it's often only by seconds- because frame-perfect maneuvers and super risky glitches and things are the only way to get above.
Do you understand why it's more popular to play games with glitches instead of fully? Because playing a game for hours takes AGES, and if you mess anything up, it will be for nothing. Would you seriously want to do that? Speedrunning a shorter game with glitches is a lot more rewarding to do, and if you screw up, you're not wasting hours on a fruitless run before resetting it all like glitchless- but you still have to play it over, and over, and over to get anywhere near a world record. And glitchless runs are boring as heck to watch and perform too without involving anything cool or unique. If they're having fun and if the categories are separate from glitchless I seriously don't get the issue. Is it because others are congratulating them and talking about them? You must be lovely people....
Okay well I have said my piece about these runs before but it's obviously a different category. It's impressive no doubt. The craziest thing I noticed was he wasn't even 100% focused on what he was doing. He was talking to people and looking at his monitor every chance he could.
That Link... He's such a nut head!
Oh no, not bad language! How will we ever survive?!
You know what's more offensive than bad language? All the bad comments about how it's not a speed run because glitches were used. People who know nothing about speed runs should keep their mouth shut.
@RegalSin Okay then, do it.
Go on, do it.
Show us your video of you beating his record.
Yeah exactly. You can't. You know it, I know it, we all know it.
See that little 1567 over the timer splits? that's how many tries he has made on that category. I believe this should be enough to show how much love this person has for nintendo and its videogames and shut all the haters up. Congrats, skater, you really deserved this one.
The ignorance of some people...executing just one of these glitches accurately and consistently takes more skill than anything you would have to do to beat the game the "right" way
@mjc0961
Just a little constructive criticism. The structure of the joke is okay but it would have been better had someone actually complained about the cursing.
I always feel just a tad sorry for these speed runner guys... But that was very impressivel
@ChuJelly Could not have said it any better.
Wow. What a bunch of children in the comment section today. I thought NintendoLife was above this bickering.
That poor widdle cat
Hopefully with those donations he can finally afford a haircut.
Masterfully done, and nice reactions.
Have not seen this type of run in OOT before. Got to see some new glitches.
Congrats on the WR.
When you look at his first time he posted just over 2 years ago. He was at 20:03.
Now two years later he has improved by 2 minutes and 16 seconds.
Such a small amount in such a long time. I would have never had the stamina to do this.
Hes so excited hes completely orgasmic after 12 mins, hilarious and great for him.
