LEGO Dimensions looks set to be one of the year's most notable releases, as it'll bring one of the world's most iconic brands into the toys-to-life market current occupied by Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Nintendo's amiibo range. The only surprise is that it's taken this long for the project to be confirmed.
Due in late September, it was revealed with an announcement video that predominantly featured a live-action sequence heavy on comedy, with brief snippets of gameplay at the end; an extended version has now been released that takes it past the five minute mark. The snippets of gameplay are as brief as before, but the conceptual - and rather good - real world segment is expanded.
We think it's a pretty entertaining watch - you can check it out below.

This looks great, hope they have the greendale Community College members as characters.
....No gameplay? Makes people think it's just a movie on the Wii U or something...
... I somehow have to find the strength and will to stay away from this.
Is it on the eShop? I was really surprised last night to see it being promoted right in the middle of the Wii U eShop. But I couldnt find any sign of Mario Maker. I did finally find MM, its the 8th video down if you click on the Coming Soon box. MM will probably be down to #9 if this had been added.
I'll watch it later on thr big screen when the boys and I figure out what to buy from the spring sale.
"One of the year's most notable releases"
On what do you base that statement?
@DarthNocturnal The Ecto-1 was released...
They could have done better with the trailer but like the idea. $99.99 is asking for too much though
Yep, even Lego is doing the toy-to-live stuff better than Nintendo. It just shows how stupid and pointless Amiibo really is!!! I'm actually looking forward to this !!!
That does look epic. Back to the Future in The Wizard of Oz? Count me in.
Seems just like Disney Infinity. Almost the same name. At least Nintendo went with something different.
@Shiryu I feel myself giving in. This bit with Joel Mchale from Community is great but so much is left out in detail of what the game is. Will we be buying expensive LEGO sets and then building them? Will a built set register as a level? Toys to life can be an expensive yet rewarding hobby.
@MightyKrypto "Stupid and pointless" Really? So apparently having cool figurines of beloved Nintendo characters to collect and play with just doesn't mean anything at all? This whole Lego Dimensions shindig is pretty much that with Legos, meaning this must be pointless to you too. No?
@rjejr It's also the top screen picture on the 3DS eShop when you hover over the 'about Wii U' section. Would be pretty cool if it has Chase McCain in it. Please make a sequel to Lego City Tt.
@TheSonicdude97 Oh please, all amiibo provides are some outfits for your characters and other small things like this (which easily could have been done with free/cheap DLC). You can't even 'bring the toys to life' in a (hub)game, unlike Skylanders; Infinity and now Dimensions.
Therefore, yeah.... VERY stupid and pointless!
@Nico07 Sadly I am suffering from burnout from the hundreds of Skylanders and already done Amiibos. I don't even know how I managed to stay away from "Disney Infinity" this long. We are heading into "Guitar Hero": A single great idea generating tons of spin-offs and filling everyone's house with more plastic than video games.
I love the fact that this is a great way to introduce smaller IP like The Wizard of Oz and Back To The Future. Now give us Dr. Who and Star Wars and I will die happy. Such a shame Disney will probably prevent Star Wars from joining Dimensions...even though its LEGOs best selling theme.
@MightyKrypto but at least there's not content locked behind the purchase of Amiibos. You don't need to buy any, yet they still are selling 10 times more they thought.
They do a lot of little things as well as being a cool Nintendo figure and at a much better price than any other series of Nintendo figures.
Many people are keeping them in boxes and not using them because they are collectable. Are you saying any toy that is still on its box is pointless and useless?
@MadAdam81
Uhm... There IS content locked! You need the amiibo's to unlock costumes, and gamemodes (like in Captain Toad); stuff you can't acces unless you buy these plastic toys.
Sure, they sell like crazy; mostly because the supply doesn't meet the demand. This promotes the ridiculous selling prices on ebay.
But whatever... i think the amiibo fad is a failed project, especially when compared to Skylanders, Infinity and Dimensions. But that's just my opinion.
my kids love their Amiibo's and I don't think they are stupid. I love Earthworm Jim, want him in Smash bros, and space is COLD!
@Shiryu I'm not completely sold on LEGO Dimensions myself. This trailer is great but they really need to show us what its all about. Those of us with huge collections of figures (We have all Infinity, Amiibo, and around 200 Skylanders). They need to show everyone how this is different, better, than the other series and why we should buy this in addition to or instead of the regular LEGO releases.
"You shall not pass!"level 1 without glitches of course.
@Nico07 And prices. I want hard numbers on how much the expansion packs will cost.I will not be making any hard decision until then.
@Shiryu Yeah with a base price of $99 ($25 more than Skylanders or Infinity) to get started, it doesn't look like its going to be cheap. LEGO is not known for cheap prices on their playsets.
R.i.p my moms wallet
Hopefully they release a 007 set for this game. That would be sweet
