In recent weeks Nintendo has seen the long-established dominance for the 3DS and its games strongly tested in Japan. There's been an influx of popular new releases on PS4, Vita and PS3, helping the first two systems in particular achieve improved hardware sales. No doubt it's a trend Nintendo hopes to reverse in the coming months.
This week's Media Create results bring little respite, ultimately. The top ten in the software results feature only one game on Nintendo hardware, with Theatrhythm Dragon Quest securing fourth place among a raft of new releases; it's a respectable showing for the rhythm game. The top 20 (with lifetime sales in brackets) is below.
- [PS4] Bloodborne (SCE, 03/26/15) – 152,567 (New)
- [PSV] Sword Art Online: Lost Song (Bandai Namco, 03/26/15) – 139,298 (New)
- [PS3] One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 (Bandai Namco, 03/26/15) – 97,362 (New)
- [3DS] Theatrhythm Dragon Quest (Square Enix, 03/26/15) – 76,858 (New)
- [PS3] Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2015 (Konami, 03/26/15) – 62,197 (New)
- [PS3] Sword Art Online: Lost Song (Bandai Namco, 03/26/15) – 55,090 (New)
- [PSV] One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 (Bandai Namco, 03/26/15) – 54,308 (New)
- [PS4] One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 (Bandai Namco, 03/26/15) – 46,693 (New)
- [PSV] Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2015 (Konami, 03/26/15) – 46,326 (New)
- [PSV] Senran Kagura: Estival Versus (Marvelous, 03/26/15) – 44,548 (New)
- [3DS] Kuroko's Basketball: Ties to the Future (Bandai Namco, 03/26/15) – 35,415 (New)
- [PS4] Senran Kagura: Estival Versus (Marvelous, 03/26/15) – 30,247 (New)
- [PS4] Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance (NIS, 03/26/15) – 22,725 (New)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SCE, 03/19/15) – 21,069 (57,220)
- [PS3] Resident Evil Revelations 2 (Capcom, 03/19/15) – 19,692 (93,065)
- [Wii U] Mario Party 10 (Nintendo, 03/12/15) – 17,433 (89,078)
- [PS3] Yakuza 0 (Sega, 03/12/15) – 13,813 (189,203)
- [PSV] Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (Bandai Namco, 03/12/15) – 13,365 (110,291)
- [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2: Shinuchi (Level-5, 12/14/14) – 12,149 (2,563,478)
- [PS4] Battlefield: Hardline (EA, 03/19/15) – 12,149 (80,971)
The hardware results do continue to reflect the current Sony dominance in software, with the PS4 and Vita taking the top two spots. There are small increases for the four 3DS iterations, however, while the 'family' combined is still outselling the Vita - the Wii U, unsurprisingly in light of limited recent releases, isn't doing particularly well. The results, with last week's sales in brackets, are below.
- PlayStation 4 – 45,446 (46,395)
- PlayStation Vita – 26,324 (20,923)
- New 3DS LL – 18,823 (17,652)
- New 3DS – 7,290 (6,566)
- Wii U – 6,698 (7,595)
- PlayStation 3 – 6,652 (6,352)
- 3DS – 2,883 (2,371)
- 3DS LL – 2,233 (2,115)
- PlayStation Vita TV – 708 (639)
- Xbox One – 250 (344)
It's worth remembering that the 3DS was dominant in Japan for a lengthy period, so the run had to end. This week - like the results of seven days ago - simply serve as a reminder that Nintendo can't rest on its laurels.

Couldnt a Digital Only Western release of Threatrhythem DQ be enough Square Enix?
Needless to say Nintendo is in a world of trouble if this continues in there own country. They need more releases and fast as the 3ds games seem to be slowing way down and now 3rd parties are realizing they can make some good money off the Vita!
Nintendo just doesn't really have anything out right now.. We're in a bit of a dry spell. This Direct tonight could help rekindle the flame, but we are going to be in a lull for a little bit.
PS3 and Wii U are neck and neck this week. XCX can't release soon enough, and hopefully a lot of people are putting off a Wii U purchase until that bundle, too bad it's still 4 weeks away.
3ds is still ahead of vita with only 2 new games in the top 20 so no big deal really
Impressive sales for Bloodborne, but wow those Disgaea 5 sales are bad. What were NIS thinking by releasing it in such a packed week?
Great and well-deserved for Bloodborne. Shame about Disgaea though. Honestly, most of what NIS makes is crap and I wouldn't be sorry to see any of their other games selling so poorly, but Disgaea is a great series. Kind of makes me worry for the future of it. Not really a vote of confidence when their flagship series and first PS4 exclusive sells 22k copies.
Bloodborne! Yeah, I think we all knew that was going to come out on top.
It's interesting to be a PS4 and Vita owner now. In previous generations, Nintendo was my go-to, but they've fallen so far behind in relevance and 3rd party support, I had to get another console much sooner.
Kinda weird. My primary game machine has not been the industry leader since the SNES. Well, actually, my "bought it three years in" X360 was the leader last generation in everything but raw sales to casual audiences. I suppose the X360 was the leader, though--in game development, releases, tech, user profiles, online offerings, etc.
I only have one problem with the PS4, and that is my almost-full-already harddrive. Who thought 500GB would fill up so fast?
@Quorthon if your PS4 HDD is almost full you should back up all your data on a external HDD and put a bigger HDD in your PS4
@FullbringIchigo
That's the plan. The internals max at 2TB right now, and the PS4 can't use external. In our own little "versus," my girlfriend sorta wins this round since her XBO can use external (but not internal), and she plugged in a 4TB last week. Granted, her system filled up faster than mine on account of it coming with two full Assassin's Creed games.
@Quorthon the latest PS4 update let's you back up all your data, profiles, saves, installed games etc etc to an external HDD so you can replace your current internal one with a new one
Is puzzles and dragons not huge over there? Maybe the mario edition will put the 3ds on top again.hopefully xcx and the buzz from whatever famitsu are gonna show next month can Boost the wii u.
I find it stupid that 3DS can't be considered as a whole. But, I guess there's a reason for everything. Just give Wii U a Animal Crossing and Dragon Quest, it'll do fine.
@Angelic_Lapras_King: No way! Physical release is a must.
@KnightRider666 They'd save a bit of dosh over physical, hence a more likely release of some kind.
@Peach64 Maybe it's my bias, but I think their decision to not put it on the portable as well will ultimately hurt them and the Disgaea series in general. At least over there.
Bloodborne is a damn fine game, very deserving of that top spot.
Nintendo please try to spend some time to a true RPG game instead relying only on Mario games. Fire Emblem is one of them, but we need more titles and a bit more mature game would do you good as well.
@Angelic_Lapras_King: I'd gladly pay the few extra "dosh" for a physical copy. My system is at the 300 app limit. As it is, I have to delete games just to download more. We should be given a choice, not just one or the other.
