During this week's Nintendo Direct we had the news that Nintendo 64 and DS games are coming to the Wii U Virtual Console in force. In the madness then and since we didn't notice a particular deal that's running in Europe as a result of the region having four games available right from the off.
As was helpfully tweeted below, if you buy three of the VC games on the same Wii U you can get the fourth for free.
They cost £8.99 / €9.99 each, so the deal is ultimately to get all four for a little under the price of a budget retail game. With the control scheme and digital manuals included, this is arguably a pretty decent deal, though it's only available until 16th April.
Are you tempted to go all the way and download all four?

Man! Hopefully we are getting Donkey Kong 64 here in the US next week?!
@rdrunner1178 Did you not see the direct? We're suppose to get it next week I believe.
When I was a kid, I made it a point to beat every game I owned (I'll come back for you someday, Battletoads), but Donkey Kong 64 was the first game that I owned that I ever quit because I couldn't stand collecting things anymore. Not even the idea of it being free makes me want to go back.
I'm only interested on the N64 games. But the promo and the curiosity wanting to try/compare MK DS makes me wanna buy them all. I've never been interested on Warioware games but who knows I may like it since it's highly rated.
Tip for those with Mario 64 on Wii, Buy that first, then the two DS games... Free Donkey Kong 64. £19.77 total I believe.
On the other hand, Shibata's broken English starting the DK rap was the highlight of the direct.
DK64 50hz version no thank you.
Aren't Rare games all the same speed even in US?
@booker_steve: Nope, see here: http://dk64.wikia.com/wiki/Version_Differences (under "PAL differences")
@Spoony_Tech - Have you not seen all the other release dates Nitneod has given us that they've missed? I wouldn't be so hard on the guy just for wishful thinking. And I suppose it's possible he missed it? Nah. (You probably didn't mean to be harsh, but it read that way.)
Good to see an offer of this type. I've been waiting for these since VC on the Wii 7 or 8 years ago. Maybe US will get the offer next week? Or in the fall.
@rjejr Yeah, I didn't mean for it to sound that way.
Nice deal
@GameCube Interesting, it's one of those issues you don't realise until you play a 60Hz version. Mario 64 plays much better, and don't get me started on Ocarina of Time 50Hz!
Just realised the price of N64 games has gone up for Wii U. They were £7.00 (apart from imports) on the Wii Shop. That's annoying when NES/SNES games were slightly cheaper (admittedly just a penny in the case of NES games).
its a cool deal but i have no interest in WarioWare DS
I hope NoA implements a similar deal, but a couple weeks later. I'd love to get DK64, Mario 64, and Paper Mario, and then get a free game, especially since the latter two would only cost me $2 each.
@XyVoX Ehh, i dont really care. I'm used to my N64 games being 50hz
As much as I love Mario 64 I prefer Mario 64 DS it expands on the existing game in so many ways and you got all those addictive mini games so I'm Gona hold out in the hope they release that version some day,I'm surprised by DK64 thought cuz it was done by rare there was legal issues does that mean we could get goldeneye at some point, as wii virtual console got the super Star Wars games would be awesome if on run up to episode 7 we got shadows of the empire battle for naboo or episode 1 racer
Has it been confirmed that the n64 games are 50hz ? If so, that is diabolical.
@alandd Mario 64 is 60Hz but DK64 is 50Hz. Like with NES/SNES games it appears they will mostly give us the 60Hz versions but occasionally chuck in a 50Hz release.
@whodatninja well unlucky you then to put it bluntly you have sorely missed out on a vastly different experience then, as i come from the UK and have ALWAYS going back to the SNES/Megadrive days when i was 20yrs old i was always educated and therefore only played 60hz systems its a totally different beast (the way the games ARE actually intended to be played) Watered down Graphics,Controls,Timing of gameplay mechanics no thank you. Night & Day, Totally different Beast, Vastly superior the way the game looks/plays are NO exaggeration.
@BarryDunne
I was wondering that as I'm really not bothered about MKDS. The wording seems pretty clear from the Tweet quoted in the story though.
@Other_Dave
"Just realised the price of N64 games has gone up for Wii U. They were £7.00 (apart from imports) on the Wii Shop."
I think it's the £2 upgrade fee baked in for first time buyers. That way everyone is paying the same price for the same piece of software.
@QBertFarnsworth Beating Battle toads, Megaman 1 and 2 and completing Super Metroid in less than an hour are my greatest, most satisfying gaming accomplishments of the good old days. Where did you get stuck in Battle toads? The unicycle level near the end of the game where you drive up the walls took me nearly half a year to beat. It's the hardest part of the entire game.
@Spoony_Tech It's two weeks from now, I believe. I hope I'm wrong and you're right, though.
@Other_Dave cheers mate.
@firstnesfan I could make it to the final tower - just couldn't get past it.
@XyVoX it's night and day. Since 1990, up until the cube, I would never touch anything with pal written in it.
So, Donkey Kong 64 FINALLY rears itself. So, I guess Nintendo got past that copyright with, what was it, Jetpac or something, that belonged to Rare or whatever. Meh, I would buy DK64 again JUST to get to the point where I could play the arcade original of Donkey Kong since Nintendo refuses to re-release the original arcade edition. I just need it to come out in NA now.
I do wonder, will the multiplayer function still be 'offline'? More then likely, I would guess.
@QBertFarnsworth agree 100% here.
Don't know what america is getting, but i dont want mario kart ds, espeically since it wont have online.
@BarryDunne It's just the four games released today that are in the deal, so any future releases won't be free if you buy 3 of them before the deadline
@Other_Dave the euro prices are the same though, they were always 10€
@MeloMan Now let's just keep them fingers crossed for Conker's Bad Fur Day and Goldeneye.
50Hz = No buy. Simple as that
America gets screwed again! Thanks NOA!! Not only do not get that sale cause the other 2 aren't available yet but on top of that
we should of had the same 4 vc games the Europe has yesterday but nooooooo!! That's too much for NOA to handle!!😡😡
In think ds digital releases would do way better on the 3ds.
Go to hell nintendo, guess you don't want my money. The world is connected, this isn't 1996, the Na conaumers know when you are giving us the shaft, and you chave been continuously giving Northa American fans the shaft when it comes to wii digital games which NA had only gotten 3 and now the n64/ds virtual console games.
I really don't know how the investors are letting nintendo run the company like this, they are still stuck in the 90's with their Buisness tactics, thus the reason where nintendo is today, nonexistant in the mainstream gaming market.
GG Nintendo.
@HylianSane never going to happen with conkers, that's a microsoft owned property now.
Same with goldeneye but microsoft can't release it without nintendo saying yes so it will never be re released.
Where the heck is Donkey Kong 64 for US aficionados? I actually thought the "collectathon" aspect was fun. There's way more than enough banana coins and what not in the game to complete it, unless you're hell bent on achieving 100%.
I'd also like to see what edits they made. I imagine the Rareware logo being replaced with a DK logo, and jetpak could be replaced with Radar Scope or something equally obscure. Google it.
@StarDust4Ever the rare logo is still in there, and jetpac probably is as well (but im not that far yet )
@mrGREEK360 the biggest problem with goldeneye is probably getting the 007 license again
The current 007 license is held by Activison.
Shame the games have headed back to 50hz and without online for games which had online (mario kart).
This is the most bizarre line up ever, I know yoshi yarn is coming but two yoshi ds titles WHY?
If they seem to be porting wii to wii u N64 games then we will be getting wave racer and 1080 and cruising USA.
@Lord The Yoshi DS games are likely to make up for the several month delay of Yoshi's Woolly World in NA (June 26th in Europe compared to Fall 2015 in NA)
@Bustacap I'm curious about the Jetpak game since Nintendo supposedly does not have the rights to it.
I don't even care about 60Hz/50Hz. All I want are the games. I suppose the upside to only having 20 odd N64 games on the Wii is that it won't take Nintendo long to re-release them, so we can get new titles, ala DK64.
Anyway, I think I'll pass on the deal. Upgraded SM64 and bought DK64 already, but MKDS is pointless without multiplayer and I'm not really interested in WarioWare. I like that N64 games have dropped in price in Australia though (used to be 1000 Nintendo Points or $15, now $13.)
@QBertFarnsworth I'd played that games everyday for months before beating it. The last boss is easier with a 2nd player though.
@crzysortagamer I don't understand why they aren't given that the 3DS has the hardware emulation for DS(i).
@NicolausCamp Why do you even have a PAL Wii U then?
@Bass_X0 Because now 60Hz is the standard here in Europe. DVD's are still in PAL format, but blu-ray's etc are 60Hz. Even the Wii U is a 60Hz console, and most of the VC releases are too, but a handful of them aren't, and I won't be supporting that practice. I'd much rather just put my money on what I think they're doing right. I would have bought this had it been the NTSC version, but since it isn't, I won't. I also won't be losing any sleep over it, I'm simply just stating my principles.
@GamerFromJump
Maybe it has something do with marketing or something, or mind control lol. You do have to admit though, it will focus more attention to the wii u. so for whatever that is worth
Without sounding like a whinge, its still too expensive here. I picked up the Metroid trilogy (on its e-shop launch sale) for around $10... yet they want about $13 for each of these. So even with the 4th free, its about $40... and that's assuming you want to play all 4 on the WiiU (which I don't).
I might pick up SM64, which is one of my favourite games ever - been a long time since I played THAT on the big screen.
Now we just need Goldeneye ... (do a deal with MS please!!).
