Western players won't have too much longer to wait before they can get their hands on some red hot, orb-matching action, as the Puzzle & Dragons Z and Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros Edition bundle has been confirmed for a May 22nd release date in North America.
This handy double-pack features both titles on one 3DS game card, potentially allowing for dozens of hours of playtime as you master the addictive "drag and match" mechanics. A special Mario-themed edition will add a little Mushroom Kingdom flair, with familiar faces like Yoshi and Toad to recruit, as well as over 80 different enemies.
Though the series is an absolute smash in Japan, this marks the first Western release on Nintendo's handheld, and some may not be familiar with the unique mashup of RPG elements with puzzle gameplay. A playable demo - aiming to release on the eShop in early May - will help ease new players into the Super Mario edition, and get their bearings before puzzle fever really kicks in.
The double-pack will release at a recommended retail price of $29.99 USD. We'll keep you posted when details are confirmed for other regions.
Until then, let us know if this double offer is on your radar with a comment below!

This is a retail game? Didn't Nintendo say this was digital only?
Of course it has to release on the same month as Splatoon.
Want it gonna buy it!
This would actually make for a good to maybe great mobile game (the Mario edition that is). Quite surprised it's not making that jump or will it? Either way I'm happy it's coming out for the 3ds.
Has it been confirmed to actually use 3d?
@Sanya It was announced for May in the same Direct as Splatoon was.
Will they have Lucifer in the Puzzle & Dragons Z? Thats what kept me from playing the mobile version.
Yay!!!
@IceClimbers ...Yeah, but I wasn't interested in the game until now.
Well May 29 for Splatoon then?
So are these games finished products or are they updated like the app version? I played PaD for a solid month straight a couple of years back before handing it off to my kid. They're still reguraly updating the thing.
Hoho!!!!!!! I've been looking forward to this pack, glad to see it'll only be $30. I know some won't jump on it because its a "match 3" game, but 20 some years ago, no hell 10 years ago these games did in fact cost money. Of course they were easy to riddle with microtransactions so...here we are now. But hey from what I've heard, no annoying pop ups or free-to-play mechanics will be popping up in either of these games , so for $30??? I'm sold Ninty.
I'll get this game cause its Mario of course!
Oh, goody! Right exactly on my birthday! The perfect gift!
Unique blend of RPG and puzzle mechanics? Oh Puzzle Quest, how quickly you have been forgotten...
Also does the Bookworm Adventure series count as Puzzle RPGs?
Awesome to have the release date and price nailed down. Hopefully you can transfer something over from the demo, but if not, no biggie. It'll help making the wait shorter in any case lol
YAY FINALLY!! I've been waiting for this since P&D Z was released a while ago in Japan. Glad to be getting both.
Totally getting it. What is that adorable thing beside Mario ? A cat dragon ?!
I'm buying this game day one. After playing Pokémon Shuffle I can't wait to play a game of this kind without the F2P model
@Chaoz No. Plus, it's been available for preorder on Amazon.
I think a demo is great as I have been on the fence about this game. This demo should be the deciding factor.
Awesome! I'll definitely be buying this!
I am not sure if I'll buy it. It doesn't look bad, but its just another Mario title (and just another mobile match-three game for that matter). It may sound a bit naieve, but I think buying this game could give the wrong message: Namely that you are behind Nintendo's mobile-nonsense. So yeah, I am a bit in doubt.
Is Wario in it ?
This looks fun, but I'm not sure about for $30. Not sure what they are thinking with that kind of price. It's a shame because this does look pretty good.
I'll definitely pick this up!
have this on pre order, cant wait for it
Got this on my "maybe" list. I'd like to play the demo first.
@rjejr
No, May 22nd since Nintendo releases all their games the same day, specially if they are on different systems Probably the day before they will release the MK8 DLC.
And I will be getting this.
@MadAdam81 - If you do want a "unique" game like this may I suggest "Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes" on a wide range of systems. I've played almost of all the match 3 games like Puzzle Quest, PQ2, Need a Hero (app), Gyromancer, and many more but M&M was the best by far. Also very enjoyable 2 player, at least on the PS3.
@sinalefa - Well that's the other possibility, another all-for-one day. I just don't expect it as my kids have a 5 day weekend scheduled then for Memorial Day and Nitneod tends to release all their games right after my kids go back to school. Kind of like Captain Toad releasing in Europe on Jan 2nd.
I do think we need another Nintnedo Direct soon though to get some dates. Now that I have all 4 of my Hryule Warrior DLC packages I'm startign to wonder why I paid Nintnedo $12 for DLC last year that still doesn't have a release date yet, only "May 2015". (OK, I know why, it saved me $4, but I'd still like to get what I already paid for last year.)
@rjejr
Oh, but look at HW, all the packs had release windows only until they were very close to release. But I still want a Direct. Don't remember any big N release on April, so maybe we will get a Direct instead.
@sinalefa - "big N release on April"
Japan is getting XCX, that's pretty big But I know what you mean, an ND must be coming, there's too much we need to know. How many amiibo do you have now yet still no portal for the old 3DS?
HW came out several months after MK8 and it had 4 DLC packs that I paid for and all 4 have been released now. I'm still waiting until May for MK8. They shouldn't have told us about the 2nd set of tracks, they just should have released the first set for $8 and then in the next Direct say they have a new set for $8 but we can get it for $4 if we already purchased the first set or we can buy a bundle for $12. I'd be ok if they had mentioned it in the last Direct, I still would have only paid $8 for the first set when it released and I could look forward to only paying another $4 in May. It's not just the money, and it's not just the waiting, it's a combination of the 2.
Any news on an EU release??????
No amiibo support?
So it'll be 34.99 in Canada, probably.
I'll try the demo. Looks interesting!
@BinaryFragger That price is common nowadays but still ridiculous! I'll wait for an eshop discount or retail discount, whichever comes first and also depending on the deduction amount. I won't pay 44.99 + tax = $50 on a game I'm only intrigued by. It's not a day one buy for me.
