Videogame covers are found in abundance on YouTube. You have covers with acoustic guitar, covers with Mario Paint, and even covers with just a guy singing mostly "Baah!" with the tones of an angel. One piece of the cover scene that doesn't seem to get as much attention is the drums, but we thankfully have artists ready to rock out percussively, too.
Mat Ombler is a drummer for the metal band Demoraliser who also just happens to like creating drum covers of classic game tunes. His latest video takes on the "Underground" theme from Super Mario Bros., first matching the melody, then complementing it. The theme admittedly doesn't provide a ton to work with, but Ombler makes it happen.
So what do you think? If this hits the mark for you, you can find more covers at the VGDrumCovers channel.

Like if Smooth made a drumming video...
Ill probably never get the appeal of a drum solo...
Well, it wasnt bad at all, but ive heard better.
how did he make the beep noises???
oh wait HE DIDNT. is there a video of this without the original music in the background?
Doesn't match the video I recently saw of an eight-year-old boy playing Dream Theater's "6:00," but it was kinda cool.
Just wanted to commend you on that tagline under the title
The subtitle here is actually quite clever, haha good job there
That was pretty awesome. He's a good drummer.
Dang! That was impressive indeed.
I feel more stupid now after watching that.
It was nice, alright, but a bit... simple? Gotta try some Demoraliser music later, just to see if he's better than that.
His drumming is awesome.
But Andrea Vadrucci did pretty much the same many years ago.
You can search for "VaDrum" on YouTube.
I dunno. Reminds me a lot of Metallica's S&M: If you add something on top of an already completed song, there's a tendency to overdo it and compete for attention, as if to say "Hey, listen! Here's something new I added to the song, cool innit?" By itself, yeah, maybe, but the song itself already has it's points of focus, and dubbing over it with an overly-eager drum solo ain't gonna help.
S&M was the same way: only the songs specifically written with the orchestra in mind were any good, the rest sounded like two different bands blaring noise at one another.
@Salamihawk "Hey, listen! Here's something new I added to the song, cool innit?"
I think that is all this guy is actually trying to accomplish here. Not trying to reinvent the song, just showing what he can do on the drums. He's pretty darn good!
Holy hell! Demoraliser is awesome.
Will have to check out some more of this stuff!
Awesome!
