No game in The Legend of Zelda franchise is complete without minigames, some of which can be teeth-grinding in their trickiness; yet somehow we keep coming back. It's tempting to try again, and again, and again in the quest for a heart piece or rupee reward that we don't fundamentally need.
An example in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D is the Mental Training challenge found in the post office, in which you try to count to 10 - exactly 10 - for a reward. When you consider the fact that the counter works to hundredths of a second, you get an idea of the precision required to succeed.
On that topic Nintendo has released another video on its Japanese channel in its series featuring franchise producer Eiji Aonuma, in which he shows off different areas of the game. Aonuma-san - being so cool that he's known to do a random Cucco dance on occasion - is pretty entertaining as he takes this minigame on; he can't help but be amused by the craziness of the challenge.

The video is below, and it's well worth a watch to see more of Aonuma-san at his best.

Still better than my first attempt.
But then again, I don't ever remember seeing the timer....
I remember getting up to 10 seconds without the bunny hood
Although the timer displays figures to hundredths of a second, because of the limits of frames per second, the smallest increment on the N64 original was something like 7 hundredths, this might vary by region too?
Since the 3DS remake will have increased the original 20FPS to 30FPS, that increment will actually have gotten smaller, and as a result your input has to be even more frame perfect!
@ikki5 you only see the timer if you wear the bunny hood.
This is the epitome of why I love Nintendo games, the people that make them seem to legitimately love games and have a deep passion for them that shines through in the final product.
I actually don't remember this in the original game, and I'm obsessed over Majora's Mask! Must have done it though because I completed the Bomber's Notebook.
@ShadJV so much time wasted......if only I had know when i did this. lol
I did it in 3 tries on one file. If I remember correctly, I remember one attempt being 9.99 seconds or similar
Aonuma is adorable.
I remember I only did this because I was aiming for 100% completion. If not I would have never bothered.
Did not know that about the timer. That's nuts!
Anyway, the best way to do it is without. Much more fun.
I remember doing this as a kid. I think I actually got it after a few tries.... it wasn't until I was much older and tried it again that I realized how hard it can be.
@ShadJV
Wow, I never knew that! I'm amazed how I'm still learning new things about some of my favorite classic games!
I had no idea other then just guess the time back then. It was only after I found out you could use the bunny hood. Fixed it anyway =D
For years I had a pretty good internal timer, because of this mini-game.
The prequel to Devilish Brain Training
Speaking of which, I wonder if Nintendo will release that game in Europe soon.
Ha, I remember that. Probably because I only played the game for the first time 1-2 years ago...don't even want to consider doing it without the Bunny Hood...
Nah, definitely not my favourite out of the minigames. It was frustrating as hell back then since we did't know about the bunny hood and you kept getting 9.88, 9.93, 10.25 etc. At least the archery minigames are fun!
